(24-25高三上·河南·期中)There are competitions held all over the world that attract millions of viewers every year. Here are four of the craziest competitions in the world. Worm (幼虫) Charming Championship
This competition involves contestants using a small area of grass and a number of different methods to try and attract as many worms as possible from the ground in a set amount of time. Participants use everything to make noise in the ground to try and drive the worms out. The current world record is held by 10-year-old Sophie Smith from England, who in 2009 collected 567 worms in 30 minutes. Toe (脚趾头) Wrestling Competition
The wonderful sport of toe wrestling was first thought up in a pub in Wetton, England, in 1974. Four friends were angry at the fact that the UK never produced any world champions and so created a sport that they could succeed in. The competition has gained in popularity and there is a regular world championship held in Ashbourne, England, every year. It’s very similar to arm wrestling and sees competitors lock toes and wrestle until one of them “pins” the other’s foot for 3 seconds. World Beard and Moustache Championship
The competition has been running since petitors come from all over the world to see who can grow and style the best beard and moustache. The competition actually has 17 different categories, including Best Freestyle Moustache, Best Natural Goatee and the all-time classic: Best Natural Full Beard and Styled Moustache. Sauna (桑拿浴) Championship
The World Sauna Championships were held in Heinola, Finland and ran from 1999 to 2010. The crazy competition saw contestants sit in a sauna for as long as possible, with the winner being the last person standing (or rather sitting and sweating). The starting temperature was 110 degrees and water would be poured onto the stove every 30 seconds. The competition came to an end in 2010, though, when tragedy struck and one of the contestants died during the event and another was severely injured.

根据Worm (幼虫) Charming Championship部分“The wonderful sport of toe wrestling was first thought up in a pub in Wetton, England, in 1974. (这项比赛要求参赛者使用一小块草地和许多不同的方法,试图在规定的时间内从地面吸引尽可能多的蠕虫。参与者用各种方法在地上制造噪音,试图把蠕虫赶出去。目前的世界纪录是由来自英国的10岁的索菲·史密斯保持的,她在2009年30分钟内收集了567只蠕虫。)”可知,Worm Charming Championship对使用的工具没有要求。故选C。
2. 细节理解题。根据Toe (脚趾头) Wrestling Competition部分中“The wonderful sport of toe wrestling was first thought up in a pub in Wetton, England, in 1974. Four friends were angry at the fact that the UK never produced any world champions and so created a sport that they could succeed in. (1974年,在英国威顿的一家酒吧里,人们第一次想到了足尖摔跤这项精彩的运动。四个朋友对英国从未产生过世界冠军感到愤怒,因此创造了一项他们可以成功的运动。)”可知,创建脚趾摔跤比赛的初衷是给英国人一个成为世界冠军的机会。故选D。
3. 细节理解题。根据Sauna (桑拿浴) Championship部分中“The competition came to an end in 2010, though, when tragedy struck and one of the contestants died during the event and another was severely injured. (然而,比赛在2010年结束,当时悲剧发生,一名选手在比赛中死亡,另一名选手严重受伤。)”可知,Sauna Championship因为发生悲剧而不再举办。故选A。
B
(24-25高三上·山东·期中)The fear of rejection is one of my biggest fears, right after long-legged and fast moving insects. I had so many experiences of crawling into my head in a crowded space with constant self-conscious thoughts about not fitting in, constantly feeling like someone was only looking at me because I had something on my face, which made me stressed. So keeping myself in a safe zone and doing things that I knew I cloud perform well on was my favorite pastime. But I had to step out sooner or later, with the first important out-of-my-comfort-zone experience applying to college.
I applied to many colleges. When I received my first college rejection, I remember my face was surely red and my heart was pounding out of my chest while I waited for the school internet to connect faster. I opened the portal (入口) and when the letter started with “Thank you for your application to our university. After a careful review…” I felt my face growing hotter.
This fear was applicable anywhere else: fear of getting rejected from a job offer, fear of having the project or ideas rejected, or even the fear of being rejected from a friend group, among so many other situations. Because of this fear, I missed out on so many opportunities to grow.
This fear hung over me until I conversed quite by accident with my teacher, Mr Smith, who was a very understanding person, and told him my inner thoughts. He told me everything we did had rejection attached to it in some way. Receiving rejections did not mean we’re not good enough, but meant that we tried our best for the time being. Being rejected was terrible while but for experiencing the scariness, we would not grow or even succeed. When we succeeded in whatever we did, the reward tasted sweeter than something that was easily obtained.
I decided to be comfortable with this fear. Now, the result does get easier; I am annoyed at the rejection less, being able to bounce back and submit another application quicker. Along the journey of rejections, I realized that I wasn’t incapable but could gain a lot during the process. And that was enough.
4. What strategy did the author initially adopt to avoid the fear of rejection
A. Performing the things easily done. B. Facing the fear of rejection actively.
C. Stepping out of the comfortable zone. D. Taking on stressful tasks continuously.
5. How did the author feel when checking the first college reply
A. Pleased but anxious. B. Concerned and nervous.
C. Excited but uneasy. D. Relieved and calm.
6. What changed the author’s attitude to the fear of rejection
A. A heated debate. B. An insightful class.
C. An unexpected talk. D. A painful experience.
7. What can we learn from the author’s experiences with rejections
A. Practice makes perfect. B. No rainbow without rain.
C. Strike while the iron is hot. D. Opportunity knocks but once.
A 5. B 6. C 7. B

根据倒数第二段“This fear hung over me until I conversed quite by accident with my teacher, Mr Smith, who was a very understanding person, and told him my inner thoughts.(这种恐惧一直笼罩着我,直到一次偶然的机会,我和我的老师史密斯先生交谈,他是一个非常通情达理的人,我把我内心的想法告诉了他。)”
通读全文,尤其是最后一段“I decided to be comfortable with this fear. Now, the result does get easier; I am annoyed at the rejection less, being able to bounce back and submit another application quicker. Along the journey of rejections, I realized that I wasn’t incapable but could gain a lot during the process.(我决定坦然面对这种恐惧。

故填have collected。
