I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I'd met in a Face-book group. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to tackle 11, 240-foot Mount Hood. My parents were happy I'd finally found a hobby.
It's safer to start winter climbs at night when there's less risk of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 a. m, following the paths alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about14 degrees. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and the four of us continued on together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil's Kitchen, a plateau at about 10, 000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind was violent. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We had ice axes, helmets, and crampons (冰爪). We were prepared for the climb.
The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. Suddenly, I heard a crack, and a whole block of ice broke off the ice step, right under my foot.
In an instant, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling my name as I rolled down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything. My clothes were torn into pieces, my helmet was broken, and my face was bloodied from cuts and scratches. Then I took a survey of my body to see where I was hurt, starting with my head, then my neck and arms. For the most part, I was fine, except that I was suffering from a sharp pain in my left leg.
As Mel made her way down, I shouted for help, and other climbers came to assist me. A couple of them were trained EMTs. They fixed my leg and called Portland Mountain Rescue. Mel stayed by my side while I tried not to cry from the pain.

I live in a city where jobs are difficult to get and if you want to find a well-paid job, it will be even harder. Therefore, it is not surprising for you to see many people in our city walk a long way because they can’t even afford an old used car.
It was a cold windy day. I saw one of these people who often have to walk from and to work every day, when I was driving after work. A middle-aged man wearing only a thin overcoat was walking down the road and trying to ask for a ride from the passing cars. Unluckily, there was no driver willing to stop their cars. When I saw two cars in front of me pass him by, I wanted to do the same. But the sight of that poor man remained in my mind for quite a moment. I felt as if a big hand was dragging me and forcing me not to leave. Finally I drew back and gave him a ride.
As I drove along, we had a conversation, during which he told me something about himself and his family. I learnt that the man was doing everything he could to support his family using the limited salary from several part-time jobs. As you could imagine, every coin he earned was going to be used to pay for the house and food.
It was a long drive before we got to his home. All the way, I could feel his hardship and tiredness. But as we came close to the house where he was living, I saw his tired eyes grow bright and the whole body was lit up. His lovely girl was playing in the front yard. Seeing her father was out of the car, she ran to him as quickly as possible, reaching out her two small hands. He held the girl with his two strong hands, laughing and kissing her cheeks. I was lost in that happy moment. I smiled, said goodbye to them, wished them the future happiness and then drove off.

I’d been lying on the ice shaking and aching for four hours by the time the rescuers reached me. They gave me first aid quickly and pulled me down the mountain. I screamed with each move, but still I had a pretty high pain tolerance. Step by step, with my teeth clenched ,we finally arrived at the bottom of Mount Hood where I was loaded into an ambulance and taken to a hospital. I stayed therefor four days. The doctors told me it would be a year before I could climb again, but I was determined to go back climbing as soon as I could.
The fall on a mountain can change everything. But the experience also made me grow as a person. There was a lot of media attention following the accident. Some said I should go back to India. I think handling all that at such a young age helped me grow up. Since the accident, I’ve climbed another 60 mountains. I’m not going to let one fall and its aftereffect keep me from doing my favorite thing in the world. I loved the challenge of conquering something bigger than myself. (168w)

On my way home, something came into my mind. I thought of my lovely daughter and my happy family. Usually, as a manager of a small firm, I was so busy that I had broken many promises to have dinner with my family. Even I had never seen my honey girl for ten days. Because every night when I got home, she had fallen asleep and the next morning when I left, she was still in her dream. I felt quite sorry for everything I had done before.
Half an hour later, I got home. My daughter was shocked to see me go home so early. But quickly a big smile spread on her face. She put down her toy, flew to me and hugged me tightly. “Dad, am I dreaming ” she asked. “Of course not. ” I told her what had happened today and promised to spend more time with her and her mom as they are the most valuable treasures in the world to me.

But the reality was not something that I had ever imagined. Due to lack of training, I failed to get the key point of my speech, for which I wasn’t well prepared. I was very embarrassed and shed big big sweat.

Suddenly, a comforting hand from behind held mine. It came from one of my teammates. He whispered to me, “Don’t be nervous and don’t be afraid. All of us are here to support you and cheer you up. I’m here to help you. ” At this time, I realized the mistakes I had made before. I shouldn’t be too confident in myself. I should have humbly trained more with my teammates.
