Not all great writers are great spellers. If you want to be published, it’s vital to submit a perfect, professionally presented manuscript (原稿). 36 No editor is likely to tolerate a writer who does not take the trouble to spell words correctly.
I keep two reference books close-by on my desk: dictionary and thesaurus I don’t trust my laptop’s spellchecker. 37 Of course, these days there are plenty of online dictionaries and thesauruses, but I’m old-fashioned enough to prefer a hard cover and pages I can leaf through with my fingers. I use the Concise Oxford Dictionary and the Collins Thesaurus.
38 It should give you a precise definition of each word, thus differentiating it from other words whose meanings are similar, but not identical. It will also usually show how the word is pronounced.
In addition, I have an old two-volume copy of the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, picked up a few years ago in a bookshop sale for just 99 pence. Of course, with its 2,672 pages, it’s not exactly short. It contains around 163,000 words, plus word combinations and idiomatic phrases. 39 However, if I need to check the origin of a word or to look up examples of its usage, there’s nothing better.
For well over a hundred years the most influential English dictionary was Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language published in 1755. “To make dictionaries is dull (乏味) work,” wrote Johnson, illustrating one definition of “dull”. 40 A few minutes spent casting your eye over a page or two can be a rewarding experience.
A. I don’t often use this dictionary.
B. It takes no account of the context.
C. But I still don’t want to replace them.
D. But a dictionary can be a pleasure to read.
E. Of course, a dictionary is not only for spelling.
F. That means good grammar and no spelling mistakes.
G. Dictionaries don’t always give you enough information.

How to prepare for a museum visit
●Decide which museum to go to.
If you’re visiting a small city, then it’s pretty simple. Your choices will necessarily be limited. If you’re going to a big city like London, Paris or Rome, then you’re faced with a large number of choices. 1 You may prefer small less crowded museums to large museums.
●Identify the museum’s masterpieces.
Once you’ve chosen a museum to visit, visit the museum’s website. 2 Then, read up on its collection and highlights. This kind of pre-trip studying will make the art and artifacts (文物) more fun and accessible.
●Decide how long you want to visit a museum.
Another good tip for visiting a museum is to decide in advance how long you want to stay. This may depend on the size of the museum. Or, it may depend on how long you can stare at art without getting “museum tiredness” and starting to glaze (变呆滞) over the artworks. 3
●Get a museum or audio guide.
Another way to have an enjoyable and relaxing museum visit is to book a private tour, especially for a very large museum or popular tourist attraction. The tour guide knows the museum very well. 4 Besides, Museums typically have either free or docent (讲解员) museum tours available as well. They are super informative and usually last roughly two hours. And you’ll also have a chance to ask any questions.
● 5
If you’re visiting a big museum, you’ll want to be efficient with your time. In the case, the best museum tip is to look at the layout of the building in advance. Some museums are shockingly disorganized, sometimes because they’re housed in ancient buildings.
A. Learn the museum layout.
B. So you’ll get a deep look at the museum highlights.
C. Check out the hours and what day the museum is open.
D. It’s a good idea to figure out your parking options in advance.
E. As the length of a museum visit increases, your attention decreases.
F. Most museums have virtual tours or online collections that you can explore.
G. If that’s the case, do your research and pick a museum that matches your interest.

(2024·河北邯郸·三模)Camping isn’t the same without a fire and in fact, many campsites even allow the use of one as long as you remain responsible and eco-friendly. As daylight disappears, there’s nothing quite like a campfire to see you through the evening and into the night.
Remember, campfires can be fun as long as you put some common sense into your practice. 6 If you’re a first-timer to the whole campfire scene, or simply want to know how to get your fire blazing in no time at all, we’ve got some great tips to help you.
Choose the right location. With any campfire it’s important to select a location that’s safe. Preferably you’d keep away from areas with overhanging branches and dry undergrowth. 7
Use dry wood. If your wood logs are wet or damp, you’ll really struggle to get any fire going. Therefore, store the wood in a dry place and keep your matches tucked away in a Ziploc bag.
Build up from small beginnings. 8 You’ll need to start small and get the blaze going with firelighters, kindling or newspapers. Only then can you start to apply larger wood logs.
9 Don’t add the larger logs on too quickly, as this can stifle (抑制) the fire and see your efforts wasted at the first hurdle.
Remember to put the fire out. After you sat around the campfire, enjoying great conversation and some light-hearted games, you’ll need to put the fire out. 10 Instead, let the fire die down and pour water or shovel earth on as required.
A. Avoid rushing the process.
B. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
C. A great campfire takes time and patience.
D. Never go to bed believing a smoking fire safe.
E. You might come across a variety of problems.
F. Also make sure not to build your fire too near any tents.
G. Camping is a fantastic experience for people of all ages.

Reading the room gives you an edge — no matter who you’re talking to
What’s the difference between a successful presentation and a not-so-successful one Skilled public speakers aren’t just good at putting words together. 11 That skill doesn’t just make people good at public speaking. It’s helpful in all kinds of situations-whether in a one-on-one meeting or a networking event. Here are several techniques you can practice to get better at reading the room.
Ask for feedback. You don’t have to wait until the conversation is over to find out how it went. 12 For example, after covering a complex topic, pause and ask your listeners if it’s okay to continue. If you’re losing their attention, let them take a quick break.
Don’t forget about basic needs. Even the most impressive speaker won’t keep an audience engaged if they’re hungry or tired. If your listeners are disengaged, offer them a break-or end the session early. 13
Learn to read unspoken implication. What are people doing while you’re speaking Are they sighing, rolling their eyes or smiling 14 Sometimes, these gestures might include objects, like cellphones or tapping pencils. If you see any of these, don’t step over it. Say something like, “Uh-oh-I see everyone’s checking their phones. Did I lose you, or is it lunchtime ”
15 No skill can be got easily. Skills of reading the room also require some training to acquire. You can work with a friend or coach to build your self-awareness. This skill can make you a more confident and effective speaker.
When you learn to successfully read the room, you and your audience get more out of your conversation. Reading the room helps you adjust in real time to make sure communication is clear.
A. They know how to read the room.
B. Learning to read the room takes practice.
C. Ask someone else to remind you of the situation.
D. These can indicate how they’re receiving information.
E. Instead, you can get the feedback from the listeners’ expression.
F. There’s no point in sticking it out if your audience have lost their focus.
G. You can check in periodically to make sure you haven’t lost your audience.

(2023·河北邯郸·一模)There’s no need to be ashamed about dozing off in class. It is actually a natural phenomenon. Studies have shown that people can only stay completely focused on something for a maximum of 10 minutes. 16 Dozing off during an important activity or event on a regular basis can develop into a habit that you might carry into other areas of your life.
Scientists have found that avoiding overeating before class is one of the most effective ways to beat class sleepiness. Most people have experienced “food coma (昏迷)” after eating a large meal. Eating too much results in a feeling of heaviness that uses up your energy. This happens because the body releases chemicals that signal drowsiness after eating. 17
Carbohydrates (碳水化合物) release more serotonin (血清素) from the brain, which makes you feel good. 18 Basically, not all foods have the same impact on your body. While some foods can increase your energy, others can make you sleepy. Also, tasking your body with digesting a large meal is exhausting. Eating large portions — especially of unhealthy foods — will leave your body with little energy to use elsewhere.
19 This gives your body the opportunity to digest smaller amounts of food at a time, leaving you feeling energized instead of tired after your meals.
Also, avoid heavy foods and choose healthy, balanced meals instead. 20 An example of a well-rounded breakfast to have before class would be a glass of milk, an egg and a salad containing at least three vegetables.
A. Finally, it helps deliver oxygen to your vital organs.
B. However, too much serotonin can lead to drowsiness.
C. Unfortunately, most classes last longer than 10 minutes.
D. Falling asleep in class can cause poor academic performance.
E. A healthy meal should include fruit, vegetables and healthy fats.
F. This is particularly true if you eat a meal that is high in carbohydrates.
G. It is recommended that you keep a stable level of energy by eating smaller meals.

(2023·河北邯郸·三模)In this day and age, it is difficult to imagine our lives without e-mails. But how often do we consider the environmental impact of these messages 21 It’s easy to ignore the invisible energy involved in running the network — particularly when it comes to sending and storing data.
Every single email is stored on a server (服务器). 22 These computers consume massive amounts of energy, 24 hours a day, and require countless water or air conditioning systems, for cooling. The more messages we send, receive and store, the more servers are needed. 23
According to carbon footprint specialist, every spam email (垃圾邮件) releases an estimated 0.3 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere. A standard email, one without an attachment has a carbon footprint of 4 grams of CO2. 24 These carbon emissions come from the energy used to operate the computers and access the internet.
Recent calculations indicate if every email user sent one less unnecessary email each day, it would reduce CO2 emissions by 16,433 tonnes each year. That is the same as 81,152 flights between London and Madrid!
25 Avoid sending unnecessary mails, reduce the amount of spam you receive and regularly clean out your inbox.
A. The real impact may actually be even higher.
B. The server is designed to store huge amounts of data.
C. That means more energy consumed, and more carbon emissions.
D. An email with a lot text and attachment can be responsible for up to 50 grams.
E. It’s definitely worthwhile taking a few minutes to do an eco-friendly digital clean-up.
F. We assume that using email requires only the electricity used to power our computers.
G. Quantities of emails require huge server farms — millions of computers storing information.

16. C 17. D 18. F 19. G 20. E
16. 空格前的句子“Studies have shown that people can only stay completely focused on something for a maximum of 10 minutes.(研究表明,人们完全专注于某件事的时间最多只能是10分钟)”是说人们完全专注于某件事的时间最多只能是10分钟。而C项“Unfortunately, most classes last longer than 10 minutes.(不幸的是,大多数课程持续时间超过10分钟)”提到“大多数课程持续时间超过10分钟”。
17. 空格前的句子“Eating too much results in a feeling of heaviness that uses up your energy. This happens because the body releases chemicals that signal drowsiness after eating.(吃得太多会让你感到沉重,耗尽你的能量。
18. 空格前的句子“Carbohydrates (碳水化合物) release more serotonin (血清素) from the brain, which makes you feel good.(碳水化合物从大脑中释放更多的血清素,这让你感觉良好)”提到碳水化合物的作用,它从大脑中释放更多的血清素让你感觉良好;F项“This is particularly true if you eat a meal that is high in carbohydrates.(如果你吃了一顿碳水化合物含量高的饭,情况尤其如此)”中的“情况尤其如此”指的是上一句中的“让你感觉良好”,所以F项和上一句是顺接关系。故选F项。
19. 由空格后的句子“This gives your body the opportunity to digest smaller amounts of food at a time, leaving you feeling energized instead of tired after your meals.(这让你的身体有机会一次消化少量的食物,让你在饭后感到精力充沛而不是疲惫)”可知,空格处的句子应该提到“少量食物”,所以G项“It is recommended that you keep a stable level of energy by eating smaller meals.(建议你通过少吃多餐来保持稳定的能量水平)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选G项。
所以E项“A healthy meal should include fruit, vegetables and healthy fats.(健康的一餐应该包括水果、蔬菜和健康的脂肪)”填入空格处,符合题意。故选E项。
