分析故事情节一般从故事六要素着手,即 who, when, where, what, why, how。
I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. l touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn’t heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. “We made it,” he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: “Out of order. Sorry. ”

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. I explained to him the urgency of catching the bus, emphasizing that otherwise I would be forced to stay overnight and buy a new ticket the next morning. Ultimately, I suggested, “I will return to Vienna in four days. If it’s OK with you, I can pay you then, with an additional 10 euros as a gesture of my gratitude. ” Following an uncomfortable pause, he simply nodded, saying, “I agree to this arrangement and trust you. ” I thanked him with the biggest smile you can imagine, and we exchanged contact information before I got on the bus.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Upon our arrival, we hugged each other like long lost friends. When I gave him the extra ?10 I had promised, he didn’t accept. “Buy me a beer next time you are in Vienna,” he said with a warm smile. Then we parted ways with a firm handshake and a promise to keep in touch. Gunter’s kindness had turned a potentially disastrous evening into a memorable story I would cherish for years to come.

As the warm summer sun shone down on us, my dad and I stood in front of our house. “Would you like to go see Rhys and take him for ice cream ” my dad asked. I froze on the spot. I love my younger brother dearly, but it had been well over a year and a half since I had been in public with Rhys. The thought made me feel anxious.
Rhys is 14 and severely cognitively impaired He was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation (突变) at birth. When I was young, I accompanied my mom or dad to pick him up from his new long-term care home at the end of our busy weekends to spend some time with him, normally at our home.
After picking Rhys up and taking the short car trip, we arrived at the ice cream store. I held onto Rhys in his chair while Dad placed our order. Rhys loves to grab things. He grabbed a woman walking by. I apologized immediately, full of embarrassment.
After getting our ice cream, we sat outside. At this point, I was upset and just wanted to go home. Dad could tell that I was upset. He silently understood and let me be. But then I saw a father and a daughter walking along the road toward the ice cream store. The girl’s movements seemed strangely familiar. I noticed she was excited, behaving similarly to Rhys.
Watching those two changed my thinking completely. I realized I wasn’t the only one in this situation: out in public with a family member with special needs. I smiled as I watched the father and the daughter just enjoying their day and not focusing on what others’ thought. They acted just like every other “typical” family. It occurred to me that I shouldn’t let what others think about Rhys ruin our time together. My days of being embarrassed by his actions had to come to an end.

I grabbed some ice cream with a spoon and playfully held it in front of Rhys. His eyes lit up with excitement as he laughed cheerfully and reached out his little hand to grab it. I moved the spoon skillfully, making it a little harder for him to catch, but seeing his eagerness and joy, I couldn’t help but laugh along. The smile on his face was like the warm sunshine on that day, making me feel a deep sense of joy and connection. For the first time in a long time, I didn’t feel embarrassed or anxious anymore.
Seeing Rhys’s smiling face, I decided to take Rhys out more often. From then on, I would actively seek out various opportunities to spend quality time with him outside. Whether it was a visit to the park to enjoy the beautiful scenery, a trip to the zoo to see the lovely animals, or simply taking a leisurely walk around the neighborhood, I wanted to create countless wonderful memories with him. I knew that there might still be numerous challenges ahead, but I was firmly determined to face them with a positive and optimistic attitude. I believed that as long as I had the courage to take the first step, I could bring more happiness and companionship to Rhys’s life.

I’d like to share with you a funny incident that occurred almost 4 years ago.
I was an 8th grader at high school. One day, the teacher gave us a group assignment and we went to some libraries after class to collect data. In the evening, I found that my group members were complaining that they were hungry and needed to have some food.
Together we entered a restaurant nearby. When the waiter approached our table, one of my classmates made an order directly without even looking at the menu. And after we were done with our food, a classmate asked the group leader to pay the bill. The group leader was surprised as he had not offered the meal and said that he did not have the money to pay the bill. I asked the waiter to bring the bill and we were shocked to see the amount. It was much more than we had expected. Though we were a bit worried, we started laughing and enjoying the whole thing. At this moment, a group member suggested we collect all of our money to pay the bill. We searched our wallets, pockets and bags for money. There were so many coins there that we had to count 2-3 times. But unfortunately, the total amount was still not enough to pay the bill.
As the scene unfolded, the atmosphere shifted from casual laughter to a shared sense of responsibility. Realizing the gravity of the situation, I stepped up and decided to explain our situation to the manager, hoping for some understanding or perhaps a way to work out a payment plan. To our relief, the manager kindly listened to our story. Seeing our genuine efforts to resolve the issue, he agreed to let us pay what we had collected and arrange for the rest to be settled later.

We left the restaurant with empty wallets but light hearts. We had learned an important lesson about teamwork and responsibility. We realized that we should have taken the time to discuss our options before making any decisions. However, although we had made a mistake by not planning our expenses, we had shown resilience and unity in the face of adversity. This experience had strengthened our bonds as a team and taught us to be more careful and responsible in the future.
This incident served as a reminder for better teamwork in the future. It not only brought us closer as a group but also taught us valuable lessons about responsibility and teamwork. We understood that clear communication and shared responsibilities were crucial for success. From that day on, we made a conscious effort to be more organized and considerate when working on group projects. Not only did we strengthen our bond as friends but also laid the foundation for our future academic and professional endeavors. We learned that even in the face of adversity, a positive attitude and a willingness to work together can lead to unexpected outcomes.

I called my husband, Larry, saying that we were going to the opera again.
The joke was, the last time I made him go, he fell asleep. Even I had to admit it was a boring production. But when someone gave us tickets to the all-time favourite Carmen, I really thought he might enjoy it. When he nodded off again, I let him sleep. I only woke him when his snoring became louder than the performance.
Larry and I have always had our basic values in common, but our interests are as far apart as, well, opera and hockey (冰球). I love the arts, and he’s a huge sports fan. His big passion is NHL hockey. He’s shared season tickets with his friends for years. But if he wanted me to go with him, we went.
We attended the games with other couples. The rest of our group were enthusiastic about the games, even the women. They knew all the players and how to pronounce their four-syllable names.
I enjoyed participating in the national anthem; but that was the only thing I enjoyed about our hockey nights. Instead of appreciating the good seats we had, I’d complain, “It’s cold in here!” My husband would offer me his jacket, but I wouldn’t take it. When the game started, my phone would be on my lap. Most of the time, I’d be texting or daydreaming. Sometimes, my texting would be interrupted when the home team scored. I knew they scored because everyone jumped up and exchanged high-fives and fist bumps.
What was so exciting about a group of grown men on ice hitting something with a stick It was beyond me. I started to wonder. Why was I the only one not enjoying myself Would I actually like this sport if I gave it a chance What if I tried to change my attitude As I looked around at thousands of people cheering and getting increasingly excited, I decided to at least give it a try — for my husband’s sake, if not for my own.

Soon I got to know the team, the rules and the excitement of scoring. I learnt who the goalkeeper was and who our latest player was. When the other team scored, I would feel disappointed. But when our team won, I jumped up and down and I cheered with the rest of them. I soon learnt all the terms and seeing me getting involved, I was surprised myself! I went to almost every game with him afterwards, expertly discussing all the game’s particulars with my husband. My husband was surprised and pleased.
On my birthday, he suddenly announced, “I’m taking you to the opera. ” That was really a surprise to me. I didn’t go to see the hockey to make him go to the opera. He said that he just wanted to reward me for being a fan of the game. I readily agreed and hugged him warmly. The opera was enjoyable and this time, Larry even stayed awake. I realize that if you know his hobbies, you’ll know his heart. It’s so much more fun having the same things in common with my husband.

Be What’s Missing
Where was that cashier Angry, I glanced at my watch. I barely had enough time to eat my hamburgers and then dash back to the hospital where I worked.
I looked around the nearly empty fast-food restaurant but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman whom I guessed to be about my age stood wiping the far end of the counter with a towel. When she thought I wasn’t looking, she looked at me with sad, dark eyes.
I waited, drumming my fingers on the counter. The woman pushed the gray hair from her lined forehead and continued wiping the counter.
I glanced again at my watch. I planned to write a letter about the lack of service in this place. But just as I mentally made up my letter, I had a memory of Rosie, a former coworker of mine. I could hear her sweet voice recommend me, “Be what’s missing. ”
“What do you mean, ‘Be what’s missing’ ” I had asked the first time I heard her use that phrase. “Whenever you find yourself in an unpleasant situation,” she explained, “just think about what is missing. ” Rosie smiled at my blank stare. “It’s really simple when you think about it. If someone is mean, then kindness is missing. If someone is inconsiderate, then thoughtfulness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what’s missing, then we’ll provide whatever the situation needs. ”
And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How was I supposed to “be what’s missing” What was missing was service. But then the woman who had wiped the counter walked slowly toward the cash register. With deliberately paced words, she asked, “May I help you ”
I was not satisfied with her service, and I was so angry that I almost lost my temper. But again I heard Rosie’s voice, “Be what’s missing. ”
I took a deep breath. It was clear that I was in a hurry to be waited on — by someone who was, no doubt, overworked, underappreciated, and underpaid. With Rosie’s words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order… and smiled. “How are you today ”

She eyed me for a second before answering. “Not too good. ” “I’m sorry. ” I said. “I hope it gets better starting right now. ” She almost smiled as she looked at me “Thanks. After dinner, I placed everything in my tray and wiped the table more thoroughly than usual. The woman was watching me, a big smile on her face. She walked over and took away the things from the table, saying “Thanks. You are so kind. You make my day. ” I said, “If this can make you happy, what I have done is worthwhile. ” I walked out of the restaurant and felt cheerful. “Be what’s missing. ” It worked. Christmas was drawing near, and came along with it our favorite moment — the Treasure Hunt.
In the past, my brother Brandon and I had opened all of the packages under the tree. All that was left was an envelope. We knew that envelopes usually contained cards, and if we were lucky, they also contained gift cards or cash.
However, this Christmas my dad looked almost like he’d forgotten about the envelope as he casually handed it to me. I opened it and discovered inside a 3x5 index card (索引卡) with a border of shining surrounding a poem. Of course, I don’t remember the poem by heart, but its rhyming message instructed us to go downstairs. We were excited. Maybe we were getting a pet we had wanted.
What we found downstairs was another envelope, containing another index card with a border of shining surrounding a poem. This poem told us to go to Dad’s car. Was the pet already in the car, ready to go
No! There was just another envelope containing another shining index card. This one told us to go to Mom’s office downtown. Neither of us was old enough to drive. This meant we had to beg our parents to hurry up and get dressed and finish drinking their coffee and get going.
Eventually, we made it to Mom’s office where we found — you guessed it — a poem telling us to go somewhere else. This time it was to the TV station where Dad worked. By now, our curiosity was stretched to the limits of our imaginations.
We soon found out, however, that such a desk at the studio is a lovely place to keep a 3x5 index card with a poem, which confused us more than any other. It told us to go to an unfamiliar address.
The car stopped in front of the unknown house. It felt like the end of the hunt.

My dad handed us the final envelope, and the final poem told us to knock on the door. I could hardly contain my excitement as we stood in front of the unfamiliar house, wondering what awaited us inside. Brandon knocked on the door, and we waited in anticipation for someone to answer. After what seemed like ages, the door slowly opened. A stranger, later known as the keeper, revealed a small cute ten - week - old cat staring up at us with big blue eyes. We both held the breath in surprise and looked up at our dad, who was smiling playfully.
Dad was standing behind us by then, and "Merry Christmas," he said," The cat's yours. " We couldn't believe it. We had been begging our parents for a pet for years, but they had always said no. Now, we had our very own cat, thanks to the Treasure Hunt. We lifted the cat up and hugged him close, feeling grateful and overjoyed. That Treasure Hunt was the best one yet, and it had given us the greatest gift of all. That was the day that cat became part of our family. It was a gift far beyond anything I could have imagined.

For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old cat, is a homebody- and for good reason. But on November 6th, Bushong, his owner, spotted Hank resting on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree.
Bushong believed Hank got frightened by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed. “Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan D’Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA).
Bushong then asked the HRA to help, but it was no easy task. HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help because of safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding(脚手架) but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance. Next she reached out to a local tree company, Casey Trees. But the crew said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree. Bushong became very sad.
Then neighbors came to help. Ed Baptiste, whose tree Hank had climbed, let Bushong sit in his backyard and called to Hank. Another neighbor donated a can of fish, hoping it might attract the cat to come down. Nearby dog owners took their pets on walks instead of letting them out in their yards to avoid further frightening Hank. Another neighbor suggested Bushong call a local business, which had a tall ladder. Unfortunately, their 42-foot ladder proved too short.
By day five, nothing had worked. That’s when another neighbor suggested creating a pulley(滑轮) system by throwing a sandbag attached to the rope to a branch higher than Hank. It will form a pulley system as the sandbag hangs down by gravity. Then raise a basket with some of the owners’ personal items. The cat may be attracted by the familiar scents and climb into the basket.

Bushong decided to have a try. She filled a small basket with some of Hank’s favourite things. She called it Hank’s party pack. With the help of volunteers from Casey Trees, they used a special equipment and shot a sandbag attached to a rope high into the tree. They got lucky on the first try. The rope caught a branch directly above Hank. Pulling on the other end of the rope, they positioned Hank’s party pack just beneath him. To their great delight, he jumped in.
Carefully, they lowered Hank down. Once Hank reached the ground, Bushong took Hank into her arms, hugging him hard. Afterward, they went inside and ate, and Hank rested in his favourite chair. Hank’s adventure taught Bushong a lesson about neighbors helping neighbors. “I can’t believe so many people went out of their way to help me with this cat,” she said. “It made me feel good that I live in a neighborhood where people would do whatever they could to get him down. It gave me hope. ”

Last December, Jamie McCall was on a cross-country drive as she prepared to move from Florida to Michigan before Christmas. She stopped at a hotel for the night in Cleveland, Tennessee, and while she was getting herself a bite to eat, her beloved eat Tucker escaped from her room. “My cat’s an escape artist,” explained McCall. “He sits beside the door and waits for someone to open it, then he runs out. ”
It somehow happened during McCall’s quick mission, and she was shocked to return and find Tucker missing. “I could not find him. I looked everywhere, for hours. ”
When Tucker still hadn’t turned up, McCall had no choice but to continue her journey to Michigan, though it broke her heart to drive on without Tucker. A friend told her to post Tucker online, which she did.
Two days later, Holly Lillard was at work at a drugstore near McCall’s hotel. She went outside to sweep and saw a cat jump out from underneath someone’s car. She called the cat over, and he came, which made Lillard realize that he belonged to someone who was missing him.
Lillard asked around and when no one claimed him, she posted a photo of Tucker to her area’s “Lost and Found Pets” online group, where she was a regular there, not just because she’s an animal lover whose own dogs are also escape artists, but because her aunt and cousin are the page administrators.
Before the day was even over, McCall had found Lillard and her post. “She sent pictures and I knew immediately it was Tucker,” said McCall. There was just one problem: By the time they connected, McCall was already in Michigan.
“I was trying to make arrangements to get him back to me, but I just couldn’t afford it,” said McCall. “I was not financially able to have him shipped back to me or anything like that. ”

With the late afternoon sun setting on his farm, Steve finished feeding his horses and decided to go home. His two sons, Danny, 6, and Claus, 3, followed behind.
As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate. Danny paused at an old well. Unknown to him, the board covering the well had grown easily broken over time. When Danny stepped on it, it caved in. Steve had just finished locking the gate when he turned around and saw only his younger son.
“Where’s Danny ” he shouted. “He fell in the hole!” Claus said. Steve quickly realized what had happened. Danny could barely swim! He ran to the well and heard Danny screaming quite way below. Desperately, he jumped in .
Steve hit the freezing water at the bottom of the well. He lifted his head out of the water and grabbed Danny, who was panicked, trying to stay afloat in water that was too deep for either of them to stand.
Knowing they could float in the ice-cold water for only a short time, Steve pulled his son up onto his chest and tried all means to stand upright with two legs against the narrow well walls for support. His body was still partly submerged (淹没). “Dad, you can pull us out now,” Danny said.
If only it were that easy. There was no way he could climb out. Looking up to see Claus looking down at them from the top of the well, Steve shouted, “Claus, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. You have to go out to the road and get someone to help. Hearing the accident from Claus, they picked him up and sped to Steve’s house. Upon arrival, Edmon quickly jumped off the truck and grabbed a long thick rope. Then he and Sam rushed to the well. “Steve,” Edmon shouted, “We’re going to send a rope down to you. ” “OK, I’ll send Danny up first. ” Steve shouted back, freezing down there. With the rope tied around, the boy was pulled out first.
Forty-some minutes after he’d jumped into the well to save his son, Steve came out, cold and wet. Just as his neighbors reached out to grab him, he collapsed to the ground. Struggling to his feet, Steve hugged his neighbors tightly, whispering “You save our lives! Thank you!” For him, words couldn’t express his gratitude for their timely rescue and they were his good neighbors forever. “Daddy!” Danny and Claus cried, rushing to Steve. Steve held them tightly in arms, cherishing them like never before, and tears welled up in the eyes of this tough guy.

Sorry. ”

OK ” “OK, Daddy. ” Claus yelled and ran to the road.
