Man in the Future
What will man be like ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in the future—in 5, 000 or even 50, 000 years from now We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may believe that man will continue to grow taller.
Again, in the moder ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity(容量; 能力). As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones. This is likely to bring about a physical change too. The head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )re in constant(持续的)use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive(敏感的)because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair It ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) will probably disappear from the body altogether in the course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald(秃头的; 秃顶的).
Perhaps all this g ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at. This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes; future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

Text 10
There are seven million people in my city. Everyone lives within 15 kilometers off the center. WowAll cities of this size suffer from the modern problem of air pollution, which is the biggest problem at present. You must disagree that overcrowding affects every part of our lives in the city. Here’s an example. We often face difficulties with both public and private transport. Buses can be slow and uncomfortablebecause all the people are using them. And using cars is almost impossible in some cities. You’ve guessed the result—traffic jam! Parking in the rush hour Forget it! Another area of our lives that is affected is the actual space we’re living in. Space That’s a joke! In cities people often have to share narrow stairs with strangers and move around small roomsAnd 99% of homes have no gardens. This can cause problems with neighbors and stress within families.
There are two main things that could be done. My first suggestion is that there should be more planning. Let’suse all the existing free space in the cities. My second advice sounds a little difficult—the government should encourage areas outside big cities to become less dependent on city centers.

To pick up schedules or talk to an RTD employee in person you can go to the Civic Centre station or the Market Street station. The Civic Centre station is located at the south end of the 16th Street Mall(take the free bus to the south end of the line). The Market Street station is located at the 16th Street Market(take the free bus to the north end of the line). You’ll be able to find all schedules for buses in the RTD system. You’ll also be able to buy any pass, etc. . All monthly passes and 10 ticket coupon(优惠券)books(pay for 10 bus rides at a time)can be bought at any King Sooners store in the Denver subway area. All buses have bike holders on the front of the bus. These can be used at no extra charge, but it is your responsibility to load and unload your bike. The driver is not allowed to assist you. You can bring a bicycle on the light rail trains during off peak hours(非高峰时间)—it doesn’t cost extra. They just ask that you board at the back of the train. All buses are wheelchair accessible.
The trains go from ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )30th & Downing streets to Santa Fe & Mineral every 15 minutes or so—depending on the time of day. Fares $1. 25 for all stops between downtown and Hampden Ave and $2. 50 for any trip further south than that. On Tuesday, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) official Chinese media said that 9, 500 kilometers of railway lines will cross the region of 100 million people—awkwardly called Jing-Jin-Ji—by 2020. Under the plan, residents of the two-city, one-province urban jungle will be able to travel between major centers by rail in just 60 minutes.
That should be good ne ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ws to Beijing’s commuters(通勤者), many of whom use private cars to get to work giving rise to some of the worst traffic congestion in the world.
Every workday in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )2013, traffic jams in the city lasted one hour and 50 minutes on average, up 25 minutes from the year-earlier period.
During vacation per ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )iods, traffic jams can sometimes be even worse as many people take to the roads to escape the capital. In the recent May Day holiday, a traffic jam of 55 kilometers in length formed on one of the highways leaving Beijing, according to the website of state-controlled China Radio International.
For now there appears ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )to be no sign of a let-up in Chinese desire to own a car. Last year almost 18 million passenger cars were sold in the country, making it the world’s largest market. Consultancy IHS Automotive forecasts that figure to grow by just over 10% this year.
Experts say poor ur ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ban planning is also at fault and say cities like Beijing put too much stress on building infrastructure(基础设施)and not enough on integrating(整合)different transport modes such as rail and road or building up public transportation systems.
Still, Beijing ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )city planners’ increased attention to suburban rail offers some hope that life in what combined would be the world’s largest city might be about to get a little easier.

Harvard researc ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hers have created a tough, low-cost, biodegradable(可生物降解的)material inspired by insects’ hard outer shells. The material’s inventors said it has a number of possible uses and someday could provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. The material, made from shrimp(虾)shells and proteins produced from silk, is called“shrilk”. It is thin, clear, flexible and strong.
A major benefit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) of the material is its biodegradability. Plastic’s toughness and flexibility represented a revolution in materials science during the 1950s and 1960s. Decades later, however, plastic’s very durability(耐用性)is raising questions about how appropriate it is for one-time products such as plastic bags, or short-lived consumer goods, used in the home for a few years and then cast into a landfill where they will degrade for centuries. Last night I w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )as driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg, distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I became increasingly impatient.
At one point along a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n open road, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I drove near the light, it turned red and I made a stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of car lamps, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wonderi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being caught, because there was clearly no policeman around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that n ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ight, the question of why I’d stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it’s part of a contract(契约)we all have with each other. It’s not only the law, but it’s an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don’t go through red lights.
Trust is our first inc ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lination(倾向). Doubting others does not seem to be natural to us. The whole construction of our society depends on mutual(相互)trust, not distrust. We do what we say we’ll do; we show up when we say we’ll show up; and we pay when we say we’ll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and we’re angry or disappointed with the person or organization that breaks the trust we have in them.
I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.

How to Solve the Problem of Heavy Traffic
With the develo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )pment of economy, more and more vehicles are going on the streets. As a result, most cities, especially the big ones, suffer from the traffic congestion. Heavy traffic has become one of the major concerns of the society.
To solve the pro ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )blem, people have put forward many solutions, of which the following two are typical. One is to build more roads. It’ll make the streets less crowded and quicken the flow of traffic. The other is to open up more bus routes. In this case, more people will take buses rather than ride bikes or drive cars. Then the number of cars and bikes racing on the streets will decline.
However, eit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )her of the two solutions will bring about problems at the same time. The former may occupy too much land, which can be otherwise more effectively used. For the latter, it’ll cause inconvenience to those living far away from the bus stops.
In my opinion, the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) best solution is to combine the two: building more roads where land is less profitable and opening up more bus routes downtown at once.模块质量评估(四)

Text 10
When young people get their first real jobs, they may face a lot of new, confusing situations. They may find that everything is different from the way things were at school. It is also possible that they will feel uncomfortable in both professional and social situations. Eventually, they realize that university classes can’t be the only preparation for all of thedifferent situations that arise in the working world.
Perhaps the best way to learn how to behave in the working world isto identify a worker you admire and observe his behavior. In doing so, you will be able to see what it is that you admire in this person. For example, you will observe how he acts in a crisis. Perhaps even more importantly, you will be able to seewhat his approach to everyday situations is.
While you are observing your colleague, you should be asking yourself whether his behavior is like yours and how you can learn from his responses to a variety of situations. By watching and learning from a model, you will probably beginto identify and adopt good working habits.

The most e ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )xciting kind of education is also the most personal. Nothing can exceed the joy of discovering for yourself something that is important to you!It may be an idea or a bit of information you come across by accident or a sudden understanding, fitting together pieces of information or working through a problem. Such personal encounters are the“payoff”in education. A teacher may direct you to learning and even encourage you in it, but no teacher can make the excitement or the joy happen. That’s up to you.
A research paper, ass ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )igned in a course and perhaps checked at various stages by an instructor, leads you beyond classrooms, beyond the texts for classes and into a process where the joy of discovery and learning can come to you many times. Preparing the research paper is an active and individual process, and an ideal learning process. It provides a structure within which you can make exciting discoveries, of knowledge and of self, which are basic to education. The research paper also gives you a chance to individualize a school assignment, to suit a piece of work to your own interests and abilities and to show others what you can do. Writing a research paper is more than a classroom exercise. It is an experience in searching out, understanding and synthesizing, which forms the basis of many skills applicable to both academic and nonacademic tasks. It is, in the fullest sense, a discovery, an education. So, to produce a good research paper is both a useful and a thoroughly satisfying experience!
To some, the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )thought of having to write an assigned number of pages, often more than ever produced before, is disconcerting. To others, the very idea of having to work independently is threatening. But there is no need to approach paper assignment with anxiety, and nobody should view the research paper as an obstacle to overcome. Instead, consider it a goal to accomplish, a goal within reach if you use the help this passage can give you.

Every year there ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e hundreds of earthquakes in different parts of the world. One of the most serious earthquakes was in China’s Shaanxi province in 1556. It killed almost one million people.
We measure an earthqu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ake’s strength on the Richter scale. The Richter scale was introduced in 1935 in Southern California in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten. Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious.
The Earth’s cru ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )st(地壳)is made up of rock called plates. As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. Earthquakes can ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) also break up gas and oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself. Another effect of earthquakes is tsunamis. These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to coastal towns and cities. China, Japan, Russia and the USA have the highest occurrence(发生)of earthquakes in the world.

On a sunny ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )day last August, Tim heard some shouting. Looking out to the sea carefully, he saw a couple of kids in a rowboat were being pulled out to sea.

The Mayan(玛雅)Ind ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ians lived in Mexico for thousands of years before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. The Maya were an intelligent, culturally rich people whose achievements were many. They had farms, beautiful palaces, and cities with many buildings. 36 This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time, because they could use it to make their lives more comfortable and rewarding.
In ancient Mexi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )co there were many small clearings in the forest. In each clearing was a village with fields of corn, beans, and other crops around it. To clear the land for farms, the Maya cut down trees with stone axes. They planted seeds by digging holes in the ground with pointed sticks. 37 But not every Maya had to be a farmer. Some were cloth makers, builders, or priests.
The Maya built large ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) temples to honor the Mayan gods. Skillful workers built cities around these temples. Today, many of these ancient Mayan cities and temples are still standing.
Although the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) cities that the Maya built were beautiful, and the people worked hard to build them, very few of the people lived in them. Usually, only the priests lived in the cities. The other people lived in small villages in the forests. They lived in small huts with no windows. The walls were made of poles covered with dried mud, and the roof was made of grass or leaves. 38 .
Measuring time was ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )important to the Maya. 39 A system was developed for measuring time accurately. Mayan priests made the system to keep track of time. Text 10
Todaythere is another problem that is troubling British societyIt seems that young people in Britain today are losing the ability to communicate clearly and accurately in Standard English, and the British government is so concerned that it has set up a committee to“promote the better use of English”. However, do British young people really have a problem in expressing themselves A study published last October suggests that there is a real cause for concern: it showed that among the UK’s 15-year-olds, only 22 percent of boys and28 percent of girls feel comfortable using Standard English in formal situations, such as at school and in interviews. Some people think that British pupils leaving school are not as good at using languages as pupils from other countries, partlybecause they spend little time talking in class. There is some reason for being concerned about the levels of fluency and willingness to speak in public, even if“public”just means in front of the rest of the class. The government committee is made up of people from the world of business, education, sports, the arts and the media. It will be chaired by the news announcer, Trevor McDonald. He is a widely respected and popular figure.

If you want t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o help children develop language and speech skills, UCLA researchers say, listening to what they have to say is just as important as talking to them.
The effect of a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) conversation between a child and an adult is about six times as great as the effect of adult speech input alone, the researchers found. “Adults speaking to children helps language develop, but what matters much more is the interaction(互动交流), ”said the study’s lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didn’t have much of an effect—positively or negatively—as long as it wasn’t displacing(替换)conversations between an adult and a child.
The UCLA stu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )dy included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes and education. The researchers found that, in an average day, children heard about 13, 000 spoken words from adults and participated in about 400 adult-child conversations a day.
Assessed(评估)separ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ately, factors positively associated(有关系)with language development including each additional 100 conversations a day and each 1, 000 words increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When looked at alone, TV was negatively associated with language development. But, when the three factors were analyzed together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children.
“The more a child s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )peaks and interacts with an adult, the better idea a parent has about where the child is, ”Zimmerman said. “Although it’s mostly done unconsciously, parents will provide feedback and correct mistakes. They’ll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what they’re doing, such as, ‘I’m putting on your pajamas now’. But give your child the opportunity to talk, hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment, ”she added. “If parents can carve out some conversation time—maybe at bath time or at dinner time—that’s a wonderful thing. ”

The“Thumbs-Up”
While western cu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lture has become used to the thumbs-up as a positive signal, probably coming from World War Ⅱ pilots using the signal to communicate that they were“good to go”with ground crew(地勤人员), there are cultures where a thumbs-up may land you in trouble. In West Africa as well as Greece, Italy and Middle East, the thumbs-up is pretty much the biggest insult(侮辱). Rather more charming is a thumbs-up in Germany and in parts of Japan—they just see it as the hand signal for the number one.
The“A-OK”
This sign is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mainly used by divers(潜水员)to mean“OK”(to prevent being confused with the thumbs-up sign, which means“rise”). Basically the meaning comes out as“great”, or“completely fine”. However, in a few countries in Europe, people may think you’re telling them that you think they’re a“zero”.
The“V Sign”
The sign comes in ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )two formats(形式): one with the palm faced outwards, and one with the palm inwards. In America they mean the same thing—“victory”. However, if the outside of your hand is facing your target, you’re giving somebody a long established insult in Great Britain and many English-speaking countries such as Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. Winston Churchill(丘吉尔)famously used the“incorrect”version of the V sign during the early years of the war, turning the outside inside later. The V sign is also considered rude in Italy.
The“Corna”
The corna hand ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) gesture has most recently been accepted by fans of rock and heavy metal music. Nowadays many Americans use the gesture simply to mean“rock on”or in support of the University of Texas in Austin(known as the“Hook’em Horns”). Today it is still popular in Spain, Brazil and Slovakia(斯洛伐克). Historically, however, the symbol possibly dates back to Ancient Greece.

The summer holiday is ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )coming. Our class has had a discussion about what to do during the holiday. But different people have different ideas.
Some are in favor of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) staying at home. After a tiring term, they believe it a convenient and comfortable way to relax. Besides, it’s traditional for them to get together with friends and relatives during the Spring Festival. But they will lose the chance of getting experience of the outside world.
However, others ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )prefer to go out for travelling. They think meeting different people will increase their knowledge and broaden their horizons. However, it will surely take a lot of money and the trips may cause some inconvenience as well.
In my opinion, it ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )would be better to stay at home, for I can do whatever I like and help my parents with the housework.
