A study has clai ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )med that 3D films exercise the brain and improve short-term functioning in a similar way to brain-training tests.
The research was led b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y neuroscientist Professor Patrick Fagan from Goldsmiths University in London. More than 100 people took part in the experiment, where participants watched Disney film Big Hero 6 in either standard format or RealD 3D. They also carried out a brain-training-style test before and after seeing a part from the film. The test covered memory, reaction time and cognitive(认知的)function, and the results were subsequently compared. According to the research, participants experienced a 23 percent increase in cognitive skills, as well as an 11 percent increase in reaction time.
Professor Fagan said ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) that the results showed enough of an improvement in brain function to suggest that 3D could play a part in improving brain power in the future. “It is a fact that people are living longer and there is a noticeable decline in cognitive brain function in old age which can impair future quality of life. There has never been a better time to look at ways to improve brain function. The initial results of this study indicate that 3D films may potentially play a role in slowing this decline, ”he said.
A second part ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of the experiment involved those watching the film with headsets that scanned brain activity and this too showed heightened activity when watching 3D. Professor Brendan Walker from Thrill Laboratory agreed with it. “Watching in 3D gives the viewer such an enriched and quality experience, as these results show, ”he said. “In evolutionary terms, the results of both parts of the test certainly make sense, ”Professor Fagan added.
As Professor Brendan W ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )alker’s test concluded, 3D films are more immersive, and heighten the senses—this, in turn, makes the brain run at quicker speeds.

Module 2 Period 3
Ⅰ. 阅读理解
It is quite rea ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter altogether.
Road politeness ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is not only good manners, but a good sense, too. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )politeness can also be dangerous. A typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienc ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in the traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

Some people ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they have just visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later.
I am one of those unf ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ortunate people who have a very poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still manage to get lost on my way there.
When I was you ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng I was so shy that I never dared to ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hoped that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for.
I am no longer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) too shy to ask people for directions, but I often receive replies that puzzle me. Often people do not like to admit that they do not know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you cannot possibly hope to remember; and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going.
If anyone ever a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sks me the way somewhere, I always tell him/her that I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving him/her wrong directions, but even this can have embarrassing results.
Once I was on my wa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building.
However, at this poi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nt, I decided it was too late to turn back and search him out of the crowd behind me, as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.
Imagine my emba ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions to my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.

BEIJING—China has ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) won the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in its capital of Beijing, making it the first city to host both the summer and winter games. The decision comes despite concerns from international rights groups and activists who say awarding Beijing is the wrong decision.
The vote to de ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cide which of the two remaining cities bidding for the games would win—Kazakhstan’s Almaty(阿拉木图)and China’s Beijing—was a close one with 44 voting in favor of Beijing to 40 for Almaty.
A slight technical pro ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )blem appeared during the process, when International Olympic Committee members had to switch from electronic tablets to submit paper ballots.
IOC President Thomas ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Bach announced the decision. “The International Olympic Committee has the honor to announce the host city of the Olympic Winter Games 2022—Beijing, ”he said.
Chinese officials and ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )members of the bidding team who were at the IOC vote in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia leapt up from the seats and hugged one another after hearing the decision. Some burst into tears. In a rare display of emotion, an announcer on the state-run CCTV news channel had to pause when starting off his report about the decision to control his excitement.
In Beijing, out ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )side the Bird’s Nest, which was a main venue(场馆)for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, elderly women were dancing and singing—in what appeared to be more of an organized gathering than a natural celebration. Others waved the Chinese flag and stood on the Great Wall.
In the city of Zhangji ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )akou, nearly 200 kilometers outside of Beijing where some of the events will be held, local residents were excited. In other parts of Beijing, however, there were few celebrations, while most were pleased with the decision. Well-known Chinese athletes such as Yao Ming—a member of the bidding team for the games—see the awarding of the bid to Beijing as an opportunity to inspire interest in winter sports here. Officials claim that China could see some 300 million take up winter sports.
Without doubt ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), the decision will be a major boost for winter sports in China such as skiing, ice hockey and figure skating, but rights activists in and outside of the country are concerned.

Loch Ness, the la ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rgest freshwater lake in the British Isles, is twenty four miles long and, at one point, one mile wide. It has an average depth of four hundred and fifty feet and at times drops close to a thousand. It is cold and murky(混沌的), with dangerous currents. In short, it is the perfect place to hide a monster from even the sharpest eyes of science.
The Loch Ness Monster, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) also called Nessie, is supposedly living in this area. The earliest recorded sighting of the Loch Ness Monster was in the biography of Life of St. Columba by Adamnan in the year AD 565. The monster apparently attacked a man who was swimming in the River Ness.
The monster didn’ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t make headlines again until August 27, 1930, when 3 fishermen reported seeing a creature with 20 feet long approaching their boat, throwing water in the air. In 1933, after a new road was built along the edge of the Loch, the number of reports rose suddenly. Early in 1934, Author Grant, a young student, was out on his motorcycle one evening when he almost ran into the monster as it crossed the road. Grant’s description of the thing—small head, long thin neck and tail with a big body, seemed to match the appearance of the plesiosaur(蛇颈龙), an aquatic(水生的)type of dinosaur that has been extinct for 65 million years.
The Loch Ness Inve ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )stigation Bureau was formed in 1962 to act as a research organization for information about the creature. Even now, efforts have continued to find the monster. A great deal of information was discovered about the Loch, but there isn’t any yet to produce any specific evidence of a monster.
Skeptics(怀疑论者) ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )argue that the water in the Loch is too cold for a plesiosaur to live in. They also argue that an air-breathing animal, like a whale or seal, would spend much more time on the surface than the creature seems to, and would be spotted more often.
Some scienti ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )sts have wondered if the sightings might be caused by an underwater wave which is known to sometimes occur in deep, long, and cold lakes, like Loch Ness. Such a wave might push debris(废弃物)to the surface that might look like a strange animal.
However, none of these is identified.

Albert Einstein ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )(1879-1955)was one of the greatest scientific thinkers of all time. Born of Jewish parents at Ulm in Germany, he completed his education in Switzerland and got his Ph. D. at the University of Zurich. He went to live in the United States in 1933 because of the rise of Nazism in Germany and Hitler’s persecution(迫害)of the Jews.
In 1905, while stil ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )l at Zurich, he published his Special Theory of Relativity, which was based on things everyone may have noticed. Of two trains are standing alongside each other and one train starts to move, a person sitting in the train may wonder whether his own train is moving or the other is moving, and before he finds out what is happening, he can see that one train is moving relatively to the other.
From this and als ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o from other more complicated facts, Einstein came to the conclusion that all motion is relative and that there is really no such things as absolute motion. Some of the other conclusions he drew are that nothing can go faster than light, and that if something such as a ruler was moving faster and faster it would seem to get shorter and shorter as its speed was near the speed of light.
By 1915, Einst ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ein had made known for his General Theory of Relativity. He also improved on Newton’s theory of gravity. Most of his theories have been tested and found to be true though some may sound strange. For his important work he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics.

“Have a ni ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ce day!”may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says“Have a nice day!”with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.
“Have a nice day. Next ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )!”This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out of the door. The words come out in the same tone(腔调)with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else’s is the management’s attempt to increase business.
The expression is one ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don’t know what to say, “Oh, you just had a tooth out I’m terribly sorry, but have a nice day. ”
The expression can be ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) pleasant. If a stranger says“Have a nice day!”to you, you may find it heart-warming because someone you don’t know has tried to be nice to you.
Although the us ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. It is wide ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ly known that any English conversation begins with the weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson’s famous comment that“When two English meet, their first talk is about weather. ”Though Johnson’s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.
Bill Bryson, for exa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mple, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that“To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it. ”Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, howeve ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. “Bryson is wrong, ”he says, “because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. ”“The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty. ”According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman st ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )and for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.

A funny thing hap ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )pened on the way to the communications revolution: we stopped talking to one another.
I was walking in the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )park with a friend recently, and his cell phone rang, interrupting our conversation. There we were, walking and talking on a beautiful sunny day and. . . I became invisible, absent from the conversation.
The telephone used to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) connect you to the absent. Now it makes people sitting next to you feel absent. Why is it that the more connected we get, the more disconnected I feel Every advance in communications technology is a tragedy to the closeness of human interaction. With e-mail and instant messaging over the Internet, we can now communicate without seeing or talking to one another. With voice mail, you can conduct entire conversations without ever reaching anyone. If my mom has a question, I just leave the answer on her machine.
As almost eve ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ry contact we can imagine between human beings gets automated, the alienation(疏远)index goes up. You can’t even call a person to get the phone number of another person anymore. Directory assistance is almost always fully automated.
I am not against mo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )dern technology. I own a cell phone, an ATM card, a voice mail system, and an e-mail account. Giving them up isn’t wise; they’re a great help to us. It’s some of their possible consequences that make me feel uneasy.
More and more, I ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )find myself hiding behind e-mail to do a job meant for conversation, or being relieved that voice mail picked up because I didn’t really have time to talk. The industry devoted to helping me keep in touch is making me lonelier, or at least facilitating my antisocial instincts.
So I’ve put mysel ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )f on technology restriction: no instant messaging with people who live near me, no cell phoning in the presence of friends, no letting the voice mail pick up when I’m at home.

The majority ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )of astronauts from America have been men. At the start of the space programme, there was strong resistance from some people against having women in space. However, some women were very keen to become astronauts and in the end they were successful. In 1978, NASA began the first training programme for women astronauts.
Judy Resnick and ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Christa McAuliffe were both astronauts and they were both women, but in many other ways they were very different. Both of them were on Flight STS—51—L.
Judy Resnick was born ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) in 1949 and studied engineering at university and went on to obtain a PhD in 1977. She was a member of the first group of women selected for astronaut training in 1978, and in 1984, she became the second woman in space. During that flight, she helped to launch three new satellites and she carried out a programme of research. She was, in many ways, a professional astronaut whose whole life was devoted to space travel.
Christa McAu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )liffe was born in 1948 and she was an astronaut almost by accident. In 1984, NASA decided to find a teacher who could accompany astronauts into space. They hoped that she would be able to communicate with students from space and encourage every one of them to be interested in space travel. Christa was a secondary teacher in history and social studies. She was a gifted teacher and she was selected from over 11, 000 applicants to go on flight STS—51—L. She was also a very good communicator and she immediately established a very good relationship with the news media(radio, television and newspapers). It was partly because of this that there was a great deal of interest and excitement about the flight. Thousands of students in schools and universities all around the country were looking forward to communicating with Christa in space. Millions of people were watching her flight with great interest. It is partly because of the excitement over McAuliffe’s place in the flight that the disaster in 1986 had such an effect on people.

Millions of years a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )go there were many types of dinosaurs on Earth. Most dinosaurs were plant-eaters. The Apatosaurus, for example, had a long thin neck so that it could eat leaves from trees. Other dinosaurs were meat-eaters. The Tyrannosaurus Rex killed smaller dinosaurs for food.
Dinosaurs were real ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )animals that once lived on the Earth, but they died out about 65 million years ago.
The disappearan ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ce of the dinosaurs is in some way a great mystery. Some scientists think that the climate changed suddenly. Fossils(化石)of trees tell us that the temperature dropped a lot and that the level of the sea dropped as well. This means that it got suddenly much colder. Perhaps the dinosaurs were too slow to change with the climate.
A new idea is tha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t a meteor(流星)crashed into the Earth. Scientists discovered a place in Mexico where they think the meteor crashed. They think that there was a lot of dust from the meteor. The dust landed on the plants. Also the dust blocked(阻挡)the sun’s light for as long as five years. Many animals, including dinosaurs, were plant-eaters, and perhaps the dust killed them. This means there was nothing left for meat-eating dinosaurs to eat, and so they died out. But, as many animals from that time didn’t die, we are not 100% sure what really happened.

People who like t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ravelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.
Travelling, in my opi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens(使扩大)our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations(文明), cultures, customs and ideas.
Through history, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )most people travelled because of necessity(必要性)—not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the ways to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity(好奇心). They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon(地平线). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.
So, travelli ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.

When you are in anot ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )her country, it is important to know the language, but it is equally important to know how to communicate nonverbally(非语言地)before saying anything by making gestures. According to a pioneer in nonverbal communication, only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people don’t know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.
In the United ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )States, for example, nodding your head up and down means“yes”. In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean“no”. In Southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying“I’ve heard you”.
In ancient R ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone’s life, he would put his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means“Everything is all right”. However, in Sardinia and Greece, the gesture is insulting and should not be used there.
In the United States ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ), raising your clasped(紧握)hands above your head means“I’m the champion”or“I’m the winner”. It is the sign prizefighters make when they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman(政治家)made this gesture after a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner. In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship.
In the United State ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s, holding your hand up with the thumb and index finger in a circle and the other three fingers spread out means“Everything is OK”and is frequently used by astronauts and politicians. In France and Belgium, it can mean“You’re worth nothing”.
There are other non ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )verbal signals that people should be aware of when they go to another country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans usually feel comfortable when speaking with someone if the distance between them is about eighteen inches to arm’s length. Anything closer makes them feel uncomfortable. When talking to Americans, it is also important to make eye contact. If you look down when talking to an American, he/she may feel that you are embarrassed, afraid, or trying to hide something.
In addition to k ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nowing how to communicate nonverbally in a country, it is important to know what you and he cannot discuss. In the United States, there are certain topics to avoid when you first meet someone, for example, don’t ask people their age, weight, religion, marital status(婚姻状况), how much money they earn, or how much something costs. You can talk about work, the weather, traffic problems, sports, food, news of the day, where one lives, consumer subjects(computers, car repairs, and so forth), and travel or vacation plans.
These example ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s illustrate that your actions can speak louder than your words. In a particular cultural contest, what you say and what you don’t say are equally important.

Comera is the only ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) place in the world which has a whistle(口哨)language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of valley cannot easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard from four miles away, and the record is seven miles. The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.
We can underst ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )and why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone. If the sick person is a long way from the town, boys and men pass the news from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help each other in the same way when a car breaks or a cow is lost.
The whistle language ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in the different parts of a country. But on Comera island, you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Louis Pasteur, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the famous French chemist and bacteriologist(微生物学家), invented“pasteurization”. In 1854 Pasteur was made head of the department of science at the University of Lille, and it was there that he made one of his most famous discoveries. Lille was a major center for wine and beer-making, and some of the local wine-makers asked Pasteur if he could help solve the problem of keeping wine fresh. At that time, it was believed that food and drinks go“bad”due to a purely chemical process. But during a series of experiments, Pasteur proved that tiny living organisms(微生物)caused food and drinks to go bad. In the case of wine and beer, the organisms are already present in the form of the various yeasts(酵母菌)that caused the fermentation(发酵)process. Pasteur discovered that heating the wine gently for a few minutes after it had fermented would kill off the yeasts that were left in the wine, with the result that the wine would remain fresh for much longer. He also proved that food and drinks could be turned bad by other organisms that were present in the air, and that they too would keep fresh much longer if they were kept in airtight containers.
The heating ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )process was so successful that it made Pasteur famous. It was named“pasteurization”in his honour, and by about 1900 it had been widely used for processing and bottling cows’ milk. The result was a huge drop in the number of bottle-fed babies dying from infant diarrhea(婴儿腹泻)and from that time on it has been a standard treatment for milk and many other food products. This simple process has saved thousands, possibly millions of lives worldwide.
