If women are mer ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )cilessly exploited year after year, they have only themselves to blame.Because they tremble at the thought of being seen in public in clothes that are out of fashion, they are always taken advantage of by the designers and the big stores.Clothes which have been worn only a few times have to be put aside because of the change of fashion. When you come to think of it,only a woman is capable of standing in front of a wardrobe packed full of clothes and announcing sadly that she has nothing to wear.
Changing fash ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ions are nothing more than the intentional creation of waste. Many women spend vast sums of money each year to replace clothes that have hardly been worn.Women who can not afford to throw away clothing in this way waste hours of their time altering (改变) the dresses they have.Skirts are lengthened or shortened;necklines are lowered or raised, and so on.
No one can clai ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )m that the fashion industry contributes anything really important to society.Fashion designers are rarely concerned with vital things like warmth, comfort and durability. They are only interested in outward appearance and they take advantage of the fact that women will put up with any amount of discomfort,as long as they look right. There can hardly be a man who hasn’t at some time in his life smiled at the sight of a woman shaking in a thin dress on a winter day,or delicately picking her way through deep snow in high heeled shoes.
When comparing men ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) and women in the matter of fashion, the conclusions to be drawn are obvious.Do the constantly changing fashions of women’s clothes, one wonder, reflect basic qualities of inconstancy and instability?Men are too clever to let themselves be cheated by fashion designers.Do their unchanging styles of dress reflect basic qualities of stability and reliability? That is for you to decide.

Two long hours later, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )the boy was spotted by a low flying helicopter lost and alone on the beach crying—a lucky break.“If 5 percent of beachgoers had an app to receive a message and send in sightings of a lost boy,the happy ending might have come much sooner,” Mr Russo said.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
(2015·湖北高三八校二模)
Dyslexia is a lear ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ning disorder. It interferes with the ability to recognize words, and for some readers to understand what they have read. Experts say dyslexia affects about five to ten percent of the population of the United States. Researchers have long known that people with dyslexia write or read words and letters backwards in the wrong order.
But a new stud ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )y shows that people with dyslexia may have trouble redirecting their attention between senses, from seeing something to hearing something. The study suggests something that might help dyslexic people learn more quickly—play video games.
Vanessa Harrar of Brit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ain's University of Oxford led the study. She reported the findings in the journal Current Biology. The study suggests that dyslexic people may have trouble moving quickly from what they read to what they hear.
In the study, Doctor ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Harrar tested 17 people with dyslexia, and 19 others without reading problems. The volunteers were asked to push a button as quickly as possible when they heard a sound, saw a light or experienced both together. Doctor Harrar compared the speed of their reactions. She found that people with dyslexia were just as fast as the others when they saw only a picture or heard only a sound. But the Dyslexics had a slower reaction time when they heard a sound and saw a picture at the same time, this may have an effect on how dyslexic children are taught how to read.
Doctor Harrar fe ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )els like playing video games could help dyslexic people shift from seeing to hearing more quickly. She adds that images in video games force the eyes to move and focus quickly. “Video game types of things pop out of here and there, they move your eyes around the screen quite quickly in response to things quite quickly, and the more you play a video game the faster you get that kind of thing. So, the video game is really training the attention system to move quickly,” said Harrar. When children learn the alphabet, they usually see the letter first and then hear the sound, or they see and hear the letter at the same time. The study shows that Dyslexics might learn more quickly if they hear the sound of a letter or word first before seeing it.

There are probably n ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o people on Earth who like to gossip (说闲话) as much as the British. If prying into other’s lives were an Olympic sport, then Team GB would surely take the gold medal.
And when the Bri ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )tish can’t watch the lives of real people with glee, they have another source of entertainment to fall back on—the soap opera.British soap operas are very different to US TV dramas. For one, they are normally longer running. The two most popular,Coronation Street and Eastenders, have been running for 48 and 24 years respectively. Both are broadcast several times a week,so remarkably there have been more than 7,000 episodes of Coronation Street.
The most obvio ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )us difference is that, unlike US dramas, the British soap operas focus on the real world. There is little glamour, the stars are rarely rich, and they normally have boring jobs.Perhaps the appeal is that the lives of the characters often mirror the lives of the audience—but with some drama added. This means the viewer can relate to the characters and feel the pain and happiness they go through on the show.
Because these soa ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )p operas last for decades, the cast is ever changing. The shows rarely focus on one or two main characters.Like the real world, people come and go all the time. However, there are exceptions.Coronation Street’s William Roach,76,has played the role of Ken Barlow since the very first episode of the show in 1960,and he is still a regular.
The choice of which s ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )oap opera you follow is often cultural:People from the north of British tend to watch Coronation Street as it is set in Manchester.People from the south generally prefer East enders, which is set in the east of London. The show is generally considered grittier and is aimed at a younger audience.
1.What does this passage mainly talk about
A.British people like to know things about other people.

“One City One Book” i ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s a generic name (通称) for a community reading program that attempts to get everyone in a city to read and discuss the same book.Popular book picks have been Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird,Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson Before Dying, and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.
“One City One Bo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ok” programs take the idea of a localized book discussion club and expand it to cover a whole city. The first such program was “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” in 1998,started by Nancy Pearl at Seattle Public Library’s Washington Center for the Book. The book chosen for the program was The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks, written in 1991.Other cities copied the idea, and the Library of Congress listed 404 programs occurring in 2007.
Each city’s program ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) has its own goals;these typically include building a sense of community and promoting literacy.Nancy Pearl warns against expecting too much from a program:“Keep in mind that this is a library program,it’s not an exercise in civics, and that it’s not intended to have literature cure the racial divide. This is about a work of literature.”
Programs typical ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ly involve more than having everyone read the same book. Some other activities that have been included are:book discussion sessions, scholarly lectures on the book or related topics,a visit by the author, exhibits, related arts programming (especially showing a movie of the book if there is one),and integration into school curricula. In Boston the “One City One Story” program used shorter stories and distributed tens of thousands of free copies of the story over the course of a month.
American Library ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )Association puts out a detailed step by step guide on how to organize a local program, including the critical step of picking the one book. The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress tracks all known programs and the books they have used.
4.“One City One Book” programs________.

(2016·聊城一中阶段测试)
Something in chocolate ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers.
Their study ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present.
The Imperial College ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful, it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes.
Ten healthy vo ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )lunteers were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin(辣椒素), which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicines are stopping coughs.
The team found ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin need to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levers of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo.
The research ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a verve activity(神经活动), which caused coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness.
1.According to Professor Barnes, theobromine ________.
A.cannot be as effective as codeine
B.can be harmful to people's health
C.cannot be separated from chocolate
D.can be a more effective cure for coughs
答案:D 推理判断题。从第二段的“Thei ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present.”可看出theobromine比codeine更有效,判断A项错误。既然它用来止咳,改善人们的生活质量,所以B项错误。在第一段提到了heobromine是从chocolate里提炼出来的,所以C项错误。故正确答案是D项。
2.What was used in the experiment to cause coughing
A.Theobromine. B.Codeine.
C.Capsaicin. D.Placebo.
答案:C 细节理解题。A、 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )B、D三项中的物品是用来做实验的物品。在文章第四段最后一句“The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicine are stopping coughs.”可知Capsaicin(辣椒素)用来引起咳嗽和作为这些药物如何止咳的依据。
3.We learn from the text that volunteers in the experiment ________.
A.were patients with bad coughs
B.were divided into the three groups
C.received standard treatments
D.suffered little side effects
答案:B 推理判断题。从第四 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )段首句“Ten healthy volunteers were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment.”可知实验中每组人吃一种所给的物品才能看出止咳的效果,故需要三组志愿者。
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A.Codeine: A New Medicine
B.Chocolate May Cure Coughs
C.Cough Treatment: A Hard Case
D.Theobromine Can Cause Coughs
答案:B 归纳主旨题。本文主要介绍chocolate中含有的一种成分Theobromine能有很好的止咳效果,所以该题的正确答案为B。

The earth is dyi ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng before us yet we sit and watch. If the TV or the game system breaks, we run off to the stores to get it fixed immediately no matter what the cost. Why aren't we willing to fix our earth Are our televisions and game systems more important to us than where we live Where shall we continue to live, until the end of time
The earth is ou ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )r home and cannot be replaced. We must take care of it. We have come up with so much technology that limits us instead of helping us. Take that game system we run to repair. What does it do It occupies kids' time! The earth has already given kids plenty of entertainment in the forms of fields and hills, forests and plains, water and land. However, instead of using what the earth has given us, and helping kids by giving them exercise as they run around, we decide to ruin kids' minds with game systems that glue them to the screen for hours, and make them ignore their homework and chores. We have polluted this earth by making these things which do not even help in any way!
We have already messed ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) up this world; we have ruined the air, water, and animals that it has so willingly provided for us. We need to stop this destruction of life and bring back the world we had before. It will not be easy, but everybody can help! What about something as simple as turning the lights off when you leave a room Recycling what can be recycled Picking up litter Donating money to an environmental organization None of these things are very hard. We can't just always say, “Oh, the earth is a mess. Ah, well, those big companies that are polluting so much can stop and fix it.” Instead, we need to help out. It's not only those big companies; it's everyday things that we do too that are ruining the earth. So stop and think about what you can do to make a difference to our world!

While scientists have ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) speculated(推测) since 1970s about the presence of an ocean on Ganymede—the largest moon in our solar system—until now the only observational evidence came from a brief flyby by the Galileo spacecraft, which didn't observe the moon long enough to confirm a liquid ocean.
This discovery marks a ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n important milestone, highlighting what only Hubble can accomplish. In its 25 years in orbit, Hubble has made many scientific discoveries in our own solar system. A deep ocean under the icy surface of Ganymede opens up further exciting possibilities for life beyond Earth.
Scientists_have ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )_already_confirmed_the_existence_of_an_ocean_on_Europe,_another moon orbiting Jupiter, and NASA has announced plans to send an unmanned mission there searching for the life that might come with liquid water.
Hubble is a telescope ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )that orbits Earth, but because of its impressive gravitational analyses it can be used to study the inside of far distant planets. Using these same principles, scientists could theoretically detect oceans on distant planets as well.

The Most Direct Solution to Any Problem
When trying to ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) solve various problems in life,an approach I find very useful is to first identify what I’d consider the most direct solution, regardless of how I feel about actually implementing (实施) it.What is the clearest, most direct path to my goal or the most efficient way to get around an obstacle
Many problems ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) will have multiple direct solutions, but often these solutions will be unpleasant at first glance because they’ll require courage, self discipline, creativity,or persistence to implement.__ 1__
For example, suppose y ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ou want to lose weight. And suppose we can say that one of direct solutions is to eat the same as you’re eating now and increase your exercise output by 500 calories a day.__2__It may require discipline and persistence, but most people would agree that it will work if you follow through.
Another example:__3__However,you don’t know how that person feels about you.One direct solution would be to simply walk up,explain your thoughts and feelings, and ask if she or he is interested in discussing the possibility of a closer relationship. This will take less than a minute to say,and whatever the outcome is,at least you know where you stand.__4__Anyhow it’s very simple and straightforward.
__5__What’s the simple ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )st and quickest way to reach your goal, assuming that you had limitless courage and discipline
A.Of course th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )is solution may require a lot of courage to overcome the possibility of rejection.
B.But if we can ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )get ourselves to follow through,we know the solutions will actually work.

D.So the best way t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )o overcome the difficulty is to ask your friends for advice.

Wisdom teeth are nor ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )mally the last teeth to appear. This usually happens when people are in their late teen years or early twenties,in other words, when they are older and wiser.
Wisdom teeth can gro ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )w into place normally and never cause a problem. But often there is not enough room for them in the mouth;they might crowd other teeth.Sometimes they even push sideways through the gums (齿龈).
An impacted wisd ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )om tooth is one that fails to completely rise through the gums.Wisdom teeth that only partly break through can leave space for bacteria to enter around the teeth.Infection (感染) is a risk in these cases.
Wisdom teeth ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )that are not well lined and become impacted are often removed. The American Dental Association says removal is generally advised when wisdom teeth only partly break through the gums.Removal is also advised if there is a chance that wisdom teeth ate poorly lined. The best time to remove is before the teeth cause any problems or pain.Young adults are the best candidates for wisdom teeth removal.
But why do we hav ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e wisdom teeth if we often need to get them removed? One theory has to do with our diets.Scientists say the diet of ancient humans probably required more chewing teeth.Life was probably a little rougher on the teeth back then, too. So it was good to have extras.
