Shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is a form of theatre. It is played by puppets (人偶) made from leather or paper along with music and singing. It started during the Western Han Dynasty . Since it was simple and cheap, people in the countryside used to enjoy it. It tells us about folk stories and historical stories, passing on local customs and culture.
Born in the birthplace of shadow puppetry—Shanxi, Wang Haiyan was crazy about the folk art at a young age. Since then, she has paid all her attention to shadow puppetry, from making puppets to giving a performance .
There are 24 steps to make the puppets, including washing the leather, carving (雕刻), and painting. Carving is the hardest part. Each shadow puppet needs about 3,000 carves, according to Wang. “We have a special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said. It took her three years to master (掌握) the skill.
In 2016, she made shadow puppets based on a cartoon and gave an online show. She used rare colours (purple, blue) and skills to make the online show interesting.
