第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题,每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Mathematics for Computer Science
This subject offers an introduction to discrete mathematics(离散数学)oriented toward computer science and engineering.
Course Meeting Times
Lectures:3 sessions/week, 1. 5 hour/session
Problem Sets (psets)
Problem sets account for 20% of the final grade. Making a reasonable effort on the problem sets is, for most students, crucial for mastering the course material. Problem sets are designed to be completed in at most 3 hours; the time is monitored through student reports.
Online Feedback Problems
Online problems to be completed before most class meetings are posted on the class website. These consist of straightforward questions that provide useful feedback about the assigned material. Some students prefer to try the online problems before reading the text or watching videos as an advance guide to going over the material; that’s fine. Watching designated videos, or at least looking at the lecture-slide handouts, is generally helpful but optional.
Like team problem-solving in class, online problems are graded only on participation: Students receive full credit as long as they try the problem, even if their answer is wrong. Online feedback problems account for 10% of the final grade.
Midterm Exams
Three 80-minute midterm exams will be given. The midterm exams each account for 15% of the final grade.
Midterm questions will typically be variations of prior problems from class and psets, and the best way to prepare is to review on the published solutions to these problems. The first exam covers all previous weeks’ material; subsequent exams focus on the material after the previous exam.
Final Exam
There will be a three-hour final exam. This exam is worth 25% of the final class grade. The final exam will cover the entire subject with somewhat greater emphasis on material from after Midterm 3. Most exam questions will be variants of problems assigned during the term(psets, class, midterm, and online). It may include a few questions which combine topics that were originally covered separately.
What determines students’ grade in Online Feedback Problems
A.Active involvement. B.Submission time.
C.Accuracy of answers. D.Completion of assignments
What is the main focus of the final exam
A.Variants of problem sets. B.Combined topics in class.
C.The content after midterm exams. D.The whole-term course materials.
Which of the following weighs the most in the final grade
A.Final Exam. B.Midterm Exams.
C.Problem Sets. D.Online Feedback Problems
B
It is October again. It has been a year since my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer; a year since she started her good, brave fight. It has been a year marked with so many milestones, so many shared smiles and secret fears.
Usually, children, with eyes that see all and minds that are still free to wonder, are extraordinarily accepting the changes in routine, the shift in seasons. This week, however, when I took my two younger boys with me for a visit to Mom’s without telling her in advance, Sean ran into her bedroom to greet her, then quickly returned to the living room to talk to me. “Mom,” my four-year-old whispered, careful not to be overheard or offending, “Grandma has no hair.”
Mom came through her surgery that removed the tumor (肿瘤) in her lung with faith and grace. She also came through thin and tired. And the side effect was total hair loss. It should grow back eventually, but my mother decided to have a wig (假发) to cover her head. She wears it mostly for the comfort of others. When she is alone, she usually leaves her head uncovered, finding the wig uncomfortable when unnecessary.
“Grandma has no hair,” Sean said, because we had caught her by surprise.
“I know, Sean. Isn’t it funny ” I asked him as my mom joined us in the living room. We explained to him that Grandma had to take medicine that made her hair go away, but it would come back.
“Would you like to touch my head, Sean ” my mother asked as my son stared at her, his blue eyes filled with questions and curiosity. It is surprising to see your mother—or anyone you love—without hair, but surprisingly it’s something that you can get used to quickly. We are, after all, not really these bodies—these are just the shells that transport who we are, and no matter what the physical changes, those connected by love seem to be able to recognize their own.
What has happened to Grandma over the year
A.She has refused others’ visits. B.She has pulled through the cancer.
C.She has lost her fight with the tumor. D.She has recovered without side effects.
Why was Sean surprised when visiting Grandma
A.Because he found Grandma tired and thin.
B.Because just overheard Grandma’s cancer.
C.Because he couldn’t accept Grandma’s appearance.
D.Because he had never seen Grandma hairless before.
Which of the following can best describe Grandma
A.Loving and optimistic. B.Loyal and honest.
C.Humble and committed. D.Generous and humorous.
What message does the author convey in the text
A.Every cloud has a silver lining. B.Never judge a book by its cover.
C.Love goes beyond physical changes. D.What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
C
Almost all new parents struggle to get enough sleep while caring for their newborns. For some penguin parents, though, periods of sleep are especially short.
Researchers recently found that Chinstrap penguins only sleep for about four seconds at a time in order to protect their eggs and newborn chicks. They do this thousands of times throughout the day.
The short “microsleeps” total around 11 hours each day. The microsleeps appear to be enough to keep the parents going for many weeks.
Niels Rattenborg is a sleep researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence in Germany. He helped write the new study. He said these penguins blink “their eyes open and shut, and they do it 24/7 for several weeks at a time. What’s surprising is that they’re able to function okay and successfully raise their young”.
Chinstrap penguins usually lay their eggs in November in nests made up of small rocks. As with many other kinds of penguins, mated pairs share parenting responsibilities. One parent usually watches the eggs and chicks alone while the other goes off fishing for family meals.
Adult penguins do not face many natural enemies in the mating season. But large birds called brown skuas eat the penguin eggs and small chicks. Other adult penguins may also try to steal the small rocks from nests. So, penguin parents must always be on guard.
For the first time, scientists followed the sleeping behavior of Chinstrap penguins in an Antarctic mating colony. They did this by attaching devices that measure brain waves. They collected data on 14 adults over 11 days on King George Island off the coast of Antarctica.
Won Young Lee is a biologist at the Korean Polar Research Institute. He thought of the idea for the study when he saw mating penguins often blinking their eyes and possibly sleeping during his long days of field observations. But the team needed to record brain waves to confirm the animals were sleeping.
“For these penguins, microsleeps have some restorative functions,” he said. He added that they would not survive without it.
The researchers did not collect sleep data outside the mating season. But they suspect that the penguins may sleep for longer periods at other times of the year.
What’s the main idea of the passage
A.Penguins keep awake for weeks when having chicks.
B.Penguins must have at least 11 hours’ sleep every day.
C.Penguins don’t have enough sleep because of antarctic climate.
D.Penguins can only sleep very short for the sake of their chicks’ safety.
What Niels did not expect about the Chinstrap penguins
A.They keep their eyes open when they are sleeping.
B.The short but repetitive sleep habit of theirs works well.
C.It does no harm to them when they keep awake for weeks.
D.They can function well even if they don’t have enough sleep.
How did these researchers get their findings
A.They paired, compared and collected.
B.They followed, observed and recorded.
C.They attached device, filmed and analyzed.
D.They read, researched and concluded.
What’s the limit of their study
A.They didn’t follow them all the year round.
B.Their study didn’t include other species of penguins.
C.The number of the penguins they studied was not big enough.
D.Their equipment was not advanced and their data was not accurate.

At first, Jason M. Allen was almost too nervous to enter his first art competition. Now, his award-winning picture is getting more and more people thinking whether art can be produced by a computer, and what, exactly, it means to be an artist.
In August 2022, Allen, a game designer, won first place in the “new artists” division’s “digital arts” category at the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition. His winning picture, titled “Thé tre D’opéra Spatial” (French for “Space Opera Theater”), was made with Midjourney—an artificial intelligence system that can generate detailed images (图像) when fed with some written keywords.
The definition for the category in which Allen competed states that digital art refers to works that use “digital technology as part of the creative or presentation process.” Allen said that Midjourney was used to create his image when he entered the contest.
Midjourney is just one of a growing number of such AI image generators. The newness of these tools and how they’re used to produce images have led to debates about whether they can truly make art or assist humans in making art.
“Is there someone to tell Allen why we don’t let robots participate in the Olympics ” one
Twitter user commented.
While Allen didn’t even use a paintbrush to create his winning piece, there was plenty of complicated work involved, he said. “It’s not like you’re just smashing words together and winning competitions.” To get the final work of art he entered in the competition, he said, took more than 80 hours. “Rather than hating the technology or the people behind it, we need to recognize that it’s a powerful tool and use it for good so we can all move forward.”
Cal Duran, an artist who was one of the judges for the competition, said that he didn’t realize that it was generated by AI when judging it. Still, he sticks to his decision to award it first place in its category, calling it a “beautiful piece”.
Allen won’t yet say what the text prompt (提示词)was behind his winning image—he’s planning to keep it a secret until he publishes a larger related work that he hopes will be finished later this year.
What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To emphasize the importance of applying technology to art.
B.To show the social influence of AI-generated art winning a prize.
C.To describe the threat from AI image generators to human artists.
D.To suggest a way to increase creativity for artists in modern times.
What should a user provide for Midjourney to create an image
A.Text instructions. B.Creative thoughts.
C.Images for reference. D.Knowledge about art.
What is the Twitter user’s attitude towards Allen’s work produced by AI
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Objective. D.Ambiguous.
Which of the following is true about “Thé tre D’opéra Spatial”
A.It took Allen less than 3 days to finally get the image.
B.It has made the application of AI in art widely accepted.
C.Cal Duran once doubted whether it was produced by AI.
D.More of its information may be revealed in the near future.

When it comes to the question how to encourage students to achieve success, teachers may offer different answers based on their own teaching experience. Here are some suggestions.
Post your expectations around the room.
If a student does not understand what teachers expect from him, he will have a much greater chance of failure. From the first day of class your expectations should be clear. Many teachers post their class rules for all to see. 36 You can select posters with encouraging words that explain your expectations.
37
Make sure that you do not show any bias (偏见) towards student’ learning. If you believe that the students in your class can’t learn a subject well, they probably won’t. 38 Be careful about the words you use and make sure that you don’t make students feel that you doubt their abilities. You must believe strongly and sincerely that your students can and will learn what you are teaching them.
Allow students the space to learn on their own.
39 While you can provide guidance,as the year goes on,you should pull back and give them more responsibility for their own learning. You should avoid jumping right in and helping students by simply providing them with the answers to their questions. 40
A.Pay special attention to slower students.
B.Have a right attitude to students’ abilities.
C.It is also a great idea to put up your expectations.
D.A healthy teacher-parent relationship is necessary.
E.The way a teacher treats students is very important.
F.Students need to learn to become self-directed learners.
G.Instead, lead students to find the answers by themselves.

第四部分 写作
第一节
Dear teachers and friends,
I feel greatly honored to give a speech here on behalf of all the exchange students.
Living and studying here makes us very fulfilled.During our stay, we have a better understanding of the British life, culture, society and so on, which have not only enriched our knowledge but also broadened our horizon. Apart from that, our abilities including listening, speaking and writing English have also got greatly improved. And it is all the English teachers and classmates here that we should owe many thanks to. Without their help, we couldn't have achieved so much.
True friendship never ends, so I hope we can keep in touch with each other even after we go back home. And I also sincerely hope that some day you can come to China for a visit.
That's all! Thank you!
第二节
The race was started and the boy was the only finisher. The other two challengers left standing at the starting line. The little boy was ecstatic, so he raised his arms in delight. The crowd, however, was silent showing no sentiment toward the little boy. "What has happened Why don't the people join in my success " he asked the wise old man.
"Race again," replied the wise man, "this time finish together with all three of you." The little boy thought a little, stood in the middle of the blind and the weak, and then took the two challengers. The little boy walked slowly to the finishing line and crossed it. The crowd were crazy and cheered and waved at the boy. The wise man smiled, nodding his head. The little boy felt proud and important. Lost in deep thought for a while, the boy thanked the wise old man for making him realize the real meaning of success. From then on, he could be regarded as a truly successful athletic.
