Shortly after stepping away from her professional cycling career, Chris Birch was selected from more than 12,000 applicants to join NASA’s astronaut class of 2021.It was an unusual experience, though Birch had an extensive background in science with degrees in mathematics, biochemistry and molecular biophysics, and a doctorate in biological engineering.
The further Birch progressed with her application to join NASA, the more convinced she became that she had a future in spaceflight. Interviews with groups of current and former astronauts, she thought, were not frightening but fun and inspiring, so were the selection exercises with other applicants.
It’s now been close to two and a half years since Birch joined NASA, and in that time, she has practiced for space walks, learned to fly T-38 training jets and developed skills needed to operate the robotic arm on the International Space Station. Her training also involved understanding how to operate the complex systems on the space station, and even becoming well-qualified in Russian, the language neded to fly the Soyuz spacecraft.
When the 37-year-old Birch graduated from Houston’s Johnson Space Center in March, her appetite for spaceflight was keener than ever before. “I absolutely would love to explore off this planet,” says Birch. “It would be an absolute career highlight to be able to go back to the moon as part of one of the Artemis missions and do science on the moon.”
Joining NASA has meant that Birch’s days of flying around a velodrome(自行车赛车场)at lightning-bolt speeds are over, but her desire to test her physical limits remains. She has turned her focus towards endurance challenges, completing the iconic Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race last year, as well as racing the Houston Marathon in January this year.
Birch has now been firmly focused on her first projects since graduating. Recently, that’s involved supporting Artemis Ⅱ recovery training in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast from California. The Artemis Ⅱ mission, now scheduled for September 2025 after a delay of several months, aims to send four astronauts on a journey to fly by the moon.
24.How did Birch feel about the selection exercises
A.Frightened. B.Excited. C.Tired. D.Bored.
25.What does the author want to show by mentioning Russian
A.Russia’s exploration of space.
B.Birch’s support for her friends in Russia.
C.The training Birch received after joining NASA.
D.The challenges Birch met in learning languages
26.What did Birch do this January
A.She ran a marathon. B.She completed a bike race.
C.She applied to NASA. D.She graduated from college.
27.What is the text mainly about
A.A young cyclist. B.A retired astronaut
C.A hardworking student. D.A self-motivated woman

Watering and fertilizing(施肥)crops to provide enough food for a changing world is a major challenge in agriculture. Now, scientists at the University of Texas at Austin have developed a “smart soil” that can keep plants containing enough water and provide them with controlled nutrients. In tests, it greatly improved crop growth while using far less water.
It’s been estimated that around 70%of the world’s freshwater usage goes towards agriculture. That of course means that in areas where water is scarce, it can be hard to grow crops and feed populations, so scientists are investigating ways to boost efficiency.
Building on earlier work, the new study marks a good step in that direction. The soil gets “smart” thanks to the addition of a special substance called hydrogel, which works to take in more water from the air overnight, and then let it come to the plants’ roots during the day. Adding CaCl2 into the hydrogel also provides a slow release of this vital nutrient.
The team tested the new “smart soil” in lab experiments, growing plants in 10 grams of soil, with some including0.1g of hydrogel. A day/night cycle was created, with 12 hours of darkness at 25℃ and either 60%or 90%relative humidity(湿度),followed by 12 hours of sunlight at 35℃ and 30%humidity.
Sure enough, plants growing in the hydrogel soil showed a 138%boost to their stem(茎)length,
1compared to the control group. Importantly, the hydrogel-grown plants achieved this even while requiring 40%less direct watering.
“The global water shortage coupled with a growing population has an immediate impact on food security,” said Guihua Yu, author of the study. “This new class of hydrogels offers a promising solution to meet the pressing needs of water scarcity and efficient nutrient uptake in modern sustainable agriculture.”
In future work, the team plans to try adding other types of fertilizers, and conducting longer field experiments.
28.What is the “smart soil” able to do
A.Take in enough nutrients from dead plants. B.Prevent itself from being watered too much.
C.Promote the growth of crops with less water. D.Adjust air humidity in line with the needs of plants.
29.What does the underlined word “scarce” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Clean. B.Salty. C.Dirty. D.Short.
30.How does the team make the soil “smart”
A.By providing enough CO2. B.By adding hydrogel and CaCl2.
C.By improving its humidity. D.By putting it in the darkness.
31.What is paragraph 5mainly about
A.The plan of the research team. B.The process of the experiment.
C.The impact of water pollution. D.The findings of the experiment.

Eastern hellbenders, a type of freshwater salamander(火蜥蜴)found only in North America, are active at night. Hellbenders hide beneath the cracks of large, smooth rocks in the riverbeds of the Appalachian Mountains, making it not easy to find them. “If you didn’t see the two little eyes, you could easily pass it up as a rock,” says Robert Adams, who studies hellbenders at Appalachian State University.
In late June, Adams and a team of scientists spotted some hellbenders in the Watauga River in North Carolina(NC).They caught, labelled and relocated these hellbenders to a different part of the Watauga River while US Fish and Wildlife biologists and engineers carefully deconstructed Shul’s Mill Dam, an abandoned dam. The project, led by non-profits American Rivers and MountainTrue, is a common effort to improve the river’s water quality while creating a better habitat for eastern hellbenders, whose populations have decreased by an estimated 70 percent since the 1980s.
The rivers across southern Appalachia naturally flow fast, but as humans developed the area in the 1800s,dams were put in place to create reservoirs and power industries. In turn, water flow decreased, urban pollution increased, and sand, stones and mud blocked the cracks where hellbenders live and feed. Hellbenders are highly sensitive to pollution because they breathe through the folds of their skin, which means pollutants more easily enter their bodies.
Ward’s Mill Dam was the first removed dam on the Watauga River in 2021.Eastern hellbenders hadn’t been documented near that dam in over 100 years, but they returned once it was removed. Although removing the dams is a messy process, the project leaders say the long-term benefits far outweigh the temporary disturbance.
Dam removals aren’t just happening on the Watauga River. An estimated 540,000 dams exist across the country, according to the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership, with about 28,000 in NC alone. The $700,000-project in NC was partly funded through a larger $800 million-allocation(拨款)for dam removals nationwide from the federal 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
32.What can be learned about hellbenders
A.They are hard to spot. B.They are inactive at night.
C.They like to lie on the rocks. D.They are seen around the world.
33.What is the final purpose of putting hellbenders to a different part of the Watauga River
A.To improve their living condition. B.To avoid their being caught by humans.
C.To build more dams for power industries. D.To create a better environment for humans.
34.What can we say about dams
A.They cut down on urban pollution. B.It is inexpensive to build them.
C.They do harm to hellbenders. D.It is unwise to removethem.
35.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A.It is a pity to have Ward’s Mill Dam removed.
B.The hellbender population will probably grow in NC.
C.The government will support the building of dams.
D.Hellbenders appeared near Ward’s Mill Dam in 2020.

After her tears stopped, Clevey asked the driver if she was OK. When the woman responded that she was fine, Clevey could hardly believe it. “I ran into your driver’s side. How could you be OK ” Clevey asked. The woman said that she had a prosthetic(假体的)arm made of metal.

M: Good morning, everyone. Have you ever been to Spain and heard about La Tomatina La Tomatina is a festival that is held in the Valencian town Bunol, in the east of Spain. Participants throw tomatoes and get involved in a tomato fight purely for joy. Usually, the fight lasts for about one hour, after which the town square is covered with tomatoes. Fire trucks then wash the streets with plastic pipes and participants often use those pipes to remove the tomatoes from their bodies. And some participants go to the pool to wash.
The city follows a short list of instructions for the safety of the participants and rules at the festival, including: Do not throw anything but tomatoes; Do not tear clothes; Break tomatoes into pieces before throwing them to avoid hurting others; Keep a safe distance from the trucks; Do not throw tomatoes directly at buildings, etc.
Since its beginning in 1945, it has been held on the last Wednesday of August every year. From 2013, participation in the event has been restricted to the holders of paid tickets. In 2015, it was estimated that almost 145,000 kg of tomatoes were thrown.

The $700,000-project in NC was partly funded through a larger $800 million-allocation(拨款)for dam removals nationwide from the federal 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.”可推断,北卡罗来纳州的火蜥蜴数量将有可能增加。
