Alaa el-Habashu was shopping for food when he came across a dilapidated(破旧的)17th-century house being used as a butcher’s shop in the historic Cairo neighbourhood of al-Darb al-Ahmai
“I was surprised by the beauty”, the U. S.-trained architect said of the house. Built of brick and stone, it has a large courtyard and a number of rooms with beautifully painted wooden ceilings. And be struck up, a friendship with the butcher. who owned the building, and received a call from him several years later saying a developer wanted to buy it and pull it down.
Determined to save the building, el-Habashi bought it in 2009.Then he spent ten years restoring the house which he named Bayt Yakan and tried to turn it into a community space.
Today, its beautifully restored courtyard, with lovely flowers growing under the wooden latticed(装有格栅的)windows, hosts many locally led community activities promoting heritage preservation.
Such courtyards played “a key social and economic role” as community centers, el-Habashi said, a role he worked hard to revive.
E-Habashi said there were once around 600 historic houses with similar courtyards — all built facing northwest to catch the cool wind— but just 24 are protected as heritage sites. “As for the rest of them, those that are still standing, who knows what state they are in ” he said. “Every day, another one gets pulled down. The loss of such heritage would be irreparable.”
Public space is becoming less common in crowded Old Cairo, often covered in dangerous air pollution from traffic-packed streets, and affected by increasingly hot summers due to global warming.
“There are very few places where people can come together, away from small apartments and crowded streets,” said el-Habashi. “I hope the old houses can help solve modern problems. They can bring some peace to the neighbourhood. I would love for these houses to become your local parks, where women can bring their kids and sit in the garden.”

Lying in the Mexican state of Daxaca, the fishing village Huatulco is home to nine bays, 36 beaches and thousands of baby turtles that apparently needed me. I had three open days and a desire to save some turtles. And so, away I went to Huatulco with Wildcoas, a group of champions-for-change who were protecting coastal and marine ecosystem in the U. S. and Mex co.
I was taken to La Escobilla to experience Wildooa st in action. This protected beach, one hour north of Huatulco, is where mass turtle nesting happens, lasting just four days during rainy season, hundreds of thousands of female sea turtles swinging their way ashore to lay their eggs.
Between threats of dogs, crabs, development and oil spills, the little creatures have the whole world against them. As recently as 2002, turtles hunting was not only a common practice, but an important part of the culture and diet in the Oaxaca communities. Luckily, Wildcoast rescues turtle eggs and recreates habitats by monitoring temperatures and humidity. Thanks to their efforts, the sea turtles have made a major comeback, with now over 72 million turtles being born on the beaches that Wildcoast protects.
I got to hold 50 of the tiny creatures in a bowl. Despite an average laying of 100 eggs, just one in 1,000 baby turtles will make it to adulthood. It was time to liberate(解放)those little creatures. Out spilled the creatures. some moving full steam ahead while others barely moved in place. Literally, hundreds of them began to spread out across the beach.
With each set of waves, we witnessed the survival of the fittest, some pushing past the whitewash while others crashed back to shore. Their fight for life made my eyes wet. A flock of birds were ready to dive into the sea for their moving targets. “One in 1,000.” Nature was cruel. After 30 long minutes, the last creature made his way to the sea.

Every time your fingers touch your cell phone, they leave behind. traces of chemicals: And each chemical offers clues to you and your activities. By analyzing them, scientists might be able to piece together a story about your recent life, a new study finds.
A molecule(分子)is a group of atoms. It represents the smallest amount of some chemical. Your skin is covered in molecules picked up by everything you’ve touched. With each new thing your skin contacts, you leave behind some small share of what it’d touched earlier.
Researchers at the University of California, San Diego(UCSD)recently analyzed such chemical leftovers on the phones of 39 volunteers. The study was led by biochemist Amin a Bouslimani. To explore those remains, the UCSD team wiped the surface of each volunteer’s phone with a cotton swab(药棉签). The scientists also swabbed(擦拭)each person’s right hand.
Then the researchers compared the chemicals found on each cell phone. The scientists discovered as many of the molecules as they could. They then compared these to a database of chemicals. Pieter Dorrestein, a UCSD pharmaceutical chemist, had helped set up that database a few years earher, which contains various substances, including spices, caffeine and medicines.
Traces of anywhere from hundreds to thousands of different molecules turned up on each phone. The molecules reflected what had been in the body, and what each person had handled before touching the phone. From all these molecules, Bouslimani reveals, “We could tell if a person is likely female, uses high-end cosmetics, dyes her hair, drinks coffee, prefers beer over wine or likes spicy food.”
Police already use molecular analyses to look for traces of explosives or illegal drugs. To date, Dorrestein says, he’s never heard of police using phone remains to narrow down behavioral clues to search for a suspect But detectives might one day use such data to track down someone who left a phone behind at a crime scene.
32.What can we conclude about the user by analyzing the leftovers on the phone
A.Lifestyle. B.Intelligence. C.Appearance. D.Personality.
33.What was the first thing needed to be done before the study
A.Comparing different Chemicals B.Building a database containing chemicals.
C.Hiring volunteers with cell phones. D.Collecting the chemicals from phones.
34.What’s the author’s attitude towards the application of the research finding
A . Indifferent. B.Critical C.Doubtful. D.Positive.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.Fingers Leave Clues About You on Your Phone.
B.Your Phone May Be Home to Various Chemicals. .
C.Molecules Are Used to Search for Illegal Drugs.
D.Cell Phones Will Be Used in More Fields.

Counting the votes took about five minutes, but it seemed like hours. At last, after three long years, the “PCHS” letters on my uniform would soon be edged with gold cording(金线), identifying me as the important Captain of Polk County High School cheerleaders(啦啦队员), which was quite an accomplishment before I ended my school days in a blaze of glory.
“Girls,” she began, “it is my pleasure to announce that ferry Shaw has been elected Captain of Polk County High School cheerleading team.” A resounding cheer was heard throughout the gym. How could this be I hadn’t missed a practice or a game in three years. Terry couldn’t claim this flawless record.
Everyone gathered around Terry with congratulations, but I was glued to my seat that only moments before was the springboard to my throne(宝座). She had stolen my thunder and swept my dream right out from under me. Finally, I walked over to Terry on shaky legs and managed a “Good luck, Terry,” in a whisper that barely masked my urge to cry. Terry hugged me close and said, “I wasn’t expecting this, Annie. What a shock.” I didn’t reply her with mean words but deep inside I wanted to do just that.
All the way home, I cried. There was no way I was going to stay on a team so blind that they couldn’t see the one most deserving of being named captain. I slammed(猛关)the front door, stomped(跺脚)up the steps and threw myself onto my bed in a dramatic display of tears and sighs that eventually gave way to sleep.
The next morning I marched over to my closet and took out my uniform. Once it was in my hands and I held it close to me, I knew I couldn’t quit. Heartbroken as I was, my true love was cheering with my teammates.
How hard it was to go to that first practice after Terry had been named captain. The moment I arrived. Coach Maguire asked me to take three of the new girls and work with them on our basic practice. Terry was assigned three as well.
