“I can't connect with your characters.”
I kept hearing the same feedback and was unable to understand why and not sure what to do. I was a character-driven writer. How could I mess up the one thing I was supposed to be good at I was determined to tell my agent that these characters were real. After all, I knew they were real. My main character Lotus had lived inside me for years. I just needed to describe her on the page.
I wrote and edited for a year, trying to respond to this agent's feedback. But Lotus'personality began to disappear. I tried to have her make “better” decisions, wearsmarter fashion, and have more friends, as my agent said she acted“childish” and was“lonely”. And when this agent finally parted ways with me, I felt like I had failed. Now with time and distance, I realize I tried to fit Lotus into a normal style to please my agent. And as a result, Lotus lost her personality.
When that agent discouraged me from writing Lotus as autistic(自闭的), he said that would make Lotus seem more“vulnerable(脆弱的)”. I didn't want Lotus to seem vulnerable. Lotus’ autism is what makes her powerful, I tried to explain. But from a normal perspective, Lotus' autism could only be seen as a weakness.
Unsure of how to tell my agent of the strength and power autistic women hold, Ibegan to write Lotus as“normal”. And I failed. After all, what do I know about being normal My whole life, autism was my nature. Not being diagnosed until 2020, Ithought the way I saw the world was“normal”.
My current agent encourages me to write from my neurodivergent(神经多样性的)experience, With this invitation, I revisited Lotus and saw her the way I first wrote her.And when I did, the characters and the story began to make more sense.
Knowing my characters as neurodivergent not only gives me joy as a writer, but it has produced my strongest writing. For so long, I've fought against the advice to“write what I know”, partly because I didn't know what I actually knew. I didn't know I was neurodivergent. But as I explored my life experience, my writing is stronger.
There is a power to our life experience. It's not a limitation on our craft, but a swinging open of the gates.
24. How did the author feel when receiving the repeated response from the first agent
A. Indifferent. B. Dismissive. C. Confused. D. Desperate.
25. Why did Lotus's personality lose
A. Because Lotus no longer lived inside the author.
B. Because the author attempted to make the first agent satisfied.
C. Because the first agent failed to sympathize with Lotus.
D. Because Lotus was considered childish and lonely.
26. What do we know about the author
A. She regretted parting with the first agent.
B. She owed her success in life to autism.
C. She knew about her autism in the early years.
D. She was inspired by her autistic experience.
27. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph

“Wherever there's salmon there's going to be chaos.” Karthik put it as he camped out near the shore of the Eagle Preserve in Alaska, waiting for action.
It was the final day of his week-long photography trip and just a few hours before his ship departed, but the software engineer-turned-hobbyist photographer stayed, watching as bald eagles flew in and out of the fishing grounds. Haines, Alaska, asouthern tip of land being between two inlets, hosts the largest gatherings of bald eagles in the world every fall, when around 3,000 arrive in time for the salmon run.
Karthik noticed there was a branch where a few lingered. This choice put the eagles closer to the shore, where their peers would sometimes arrive to ruin a successful hunt: a freshly caught salmon. When a fish appeared, the bystanders would fly down for their share.
As Karthik trained his lens on a branch, there was chaos: an incoming eagle flooded in, terrifying its current resident, and claiming the best spot. He titled the resulting image“Dance of the Eagles” and submitted it to the National Geographic Pictures of theYear contest.
For years, Karthik has been photographing landscapes and his travels, but, in 2020,locked by the pandemic in his home, he started experimenting with wildlife photography. He targeted the local natural reserves— driving an hour to NationalSeashore and walking the city's parks— in search of birds and other creatures. Hearing that two bald eagles were nesting on top of an elementary school two hours from home,Karthik began going there on the weekends, camping out for as long as it took to capture them flying out to hunt.
The patience he learned in that trial period paid off. On Friday, his photograph of the eagles in Alaska was announced as top-prize winner. What Karthik appreciates most about the photo is the tension of the moment. “It opens up the question: what happened next ” he says. The reality is less mysterious: the winning eagle got bored when no salmon appeared and soon abandoned the spot to the next hungry observer.
28. What is the purpose of quoting Karthik's motto in the first paragraph

D. Because it is full of uncertainty and expectation.
31. Which of the following words can best describe Karthik
A. Intelligent and skillful.
B. Diligent and cautious.
C. Patient and observant.
D. Adventurous and romantic.

The concepts of delayed satisfaction, self-control, and self-regulation are often used interchangeably and inconsistently. The ability to delay an impulse(冲动) for an immediate reward to receive a more favorable reward at a later time is the standard definition of delayed satisfaction.
Studies show that delayed satisfaction is one of the most effective personal characteristics of successful people. People who learn how to manage their need to be satisfied in the moment develop more in their careers, relationships, health, and finances than people who give in to it.
Being able to delay satisfaction isn't the easiest skill to acquire. It involves feeling dissatisfied, which is why it seems impossible for people who haven't learned to control their impulses. Choosing to have something now might feel good, but making the effort to have discipline and manage your impulses can result in bigger or better rewards in the future. Over time, delayed satisfaction will improve your self-control and ultimately help you achieve your long-term goals faster.
The Seinfeld Strategy is one of several helpful self-satisfaction techniques you can use to put off satisfaction for longer periods of time. Every day that you delay satisfaction and avoid temptation(诱惑), you cross it off your calendar. After a few days, this creates a chain. This strategy works well for people who enjoy gamification(游戏化). If you find it satisfying to keep the chain going, you' re less likely to give in to temptation.
Do you find yourself going back to your temptations without thinking about it If this is the case, you can practice mindfulness to become more . aware of what you do.When you notice yourself doing something out of habit, stop for a moment. Ask yourself why you' re doing what you' re doing. Take some time to analyze how you' re feeling. Pay attention to the details. Take a moment of mindfulness to interrupt your autopilot every time this happens. The more you practice this, the more you'll break the habit of going for instant satisfaction.
32. Which of the following best shows delayed satisfaction
A. Receiving an instant reward after winning.
B. Giving up a hard-gained opportunity.
C. Playing computer games within limited time.
D. Postponing bonuses for better outcomes.
33. Why is delayed satisfaction hard to attain
A. It can lead to missed opportunities.
B. It's bad for achieving long-term goals.
C. It's impossible to resist the inner needs.
D. It's a comfort to possess something at once.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The complexity of the Seinfeld Strategy.
B. An example of self-discipline techniques.
C. A method of practicing delayed satisfaction.
D. The effectiveness of keeping the chain going.
35. What does the author suggest people do for returning to temptations
A. Ignore useless details.
B. Get rid of old bad habits.
C. Concentrate on true inner wants.
D. Cancel temptations from the calendar.

People looking to lose weight might try all kinds of ways to eat fewer calories. Now, a study sheds some light onto which of those strategies actually work. 36 Be specific, they are eating slowly, cutting out after-dinner snacks and not eating within two hours of going to bed.
In the study, people were asked about their eating and sleeping habits, including brow fast they typically ate and whether they regularly skipped breakfast, snacked after dinner or ate before bed. 37
At the start of the study, more than half of the people said they ate at a normal speed, while about a third said they tended to eat fast. Only about 7% of people called themselves slow eaters.
Compared to those who wolfed down their food quickly, those who ate at a normal speed were 29% less likely to be obese. 38 People who said they didn't snack after dinner at least three times a week, and those who didn't eat within two hours of bedtime, were also less likely to gain weight over the course of the study than those who did those behaviors. Surprisingly, eating breakfast did not appear to make much of a difference for weight gain、Whether people regularly ate or skipped breakfast did not seem to have an effect on change in body mass index(BMI)(身体质量指数).
39 Eating quickly has previously been linked to impaired glucose tolerance(耐糖量受损), which can affect metabolism and fat-burning. Fast eaters may also continue to consume food even after they've had adequate calories, the study authors write in the paper, whereas slow eaters might feel full on less food overall. 40 But even after controlling for other potentially influencing factors, the researchers found that eating speed appeared to be an independent factor in weight and BMI measures.
A. They were also asked about their alcohol and tobacco use.
B. The findings make sense, say the researchers.
C. Based on the data, three behaviors are linked to lower obesity rates.
D. Other research has shown that a slower eating pace improves satisfaction.
E. People who ate slowly were 42% less likely to be obese.
F. Slow eaters also tended to have healthier habits than their faster-eating peers.
G. The study looked specifically at people in Japan with health problems.

Father's Day was in two weeks. I didn't know what to get Dad. Last year I made him a photo album. This year I wanted to do something different. At dinner, Dad accidentally dropped his favorite blue tie into his soup bowl. The tie was ruined. Isuddenly knew what to get Dad for Father's Day!
“How much does a tie cost ” I asked Mom the next morning. “Depends,” she said.“Some can cost twenty dollars. Do you have enough money, Jenny ”“No,” I said sadly. When I got to my room to change into my school clothes I noticed a hole in my shirt.
“Mom, I need you to sew my shirt,” I said loudly, rushing out the door to the school bus. At school I picked at the hole in my shirt. I thought about how I could come up with enough money to buy a tie. I took a deep sigh, and played with the hole some more. As the hole grew in size, an idea sprung into my mind.
After coming home from school, I dug through my closet trying to find other worn clothes.
“Mom!” I yelled down the hall heading towards her. “Can I cut these clothes up to make Dad a patchwork(拼缝) tie for Father's Day ” I pointed out the holes to Mom.“I guess,” she said.
“And,” I added, “Can you show me how to sew and make tiny stitches(针脚) ”“Yes, Jenny. Let's start now before Dad gets home,” Mom said, heading for her sewing supplies.
I followed Mom`s instructions and started making a patchwork tie. I gently pressed my foot on the foot pedal(缝纫机脚踏板). Suddenly, the needle stopped and the machine made a horrible sound. “No!” I said. “Try again, Jenny,” Mom instructed. Itook a deep breath and gently applied the pedal again. Unluckily, I failed again.
