New Space Missions in 2024
ESA’s Hera mission
The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to launch its Hera spacecraft in October on a mission to return to an asteroid (小行星) system visited by NASA’s DART spacecraft in 2022. Hera is designed to collect data on the targeted system, called Didymos. The spacecraft is expected to closely examine the physical properties of Didymos and measure detailed effects of DART’s crash.
Boeing’s Starliner test flight
NASA and Boeing have said they plan to launch the first crewed test flight of the company’s Starliner spacecraft. NASA says it is targeting May 2024 to have Starliner ready for flight. The launch date is to be set later.
The spacecraft completed its first unscrewed flight test to the International Space Station (ISS) last May. But Boeing has experienced several technical difficulties with Starliner during the mission and has worked with NASA to fix the problems as it prepares for the planned crewed flight.
SpaceX Starship test
SpaceX, another NASA’s partner, has been successfully using its rockets and spacecraft to transport astronauts and materials to the ISS since 2020. But the company will be seeking a successful test flight in 2024 for its super-heavy Starship spacecraft.
SpaceX experienced two failed Starship tests in 2023 — one in April and the other in November—which resulted in explosions. The April explosion caused major damage to the launch structure in the state of Texas. SpaceX has said it has been examining the issues related to the explosions and plans to carry out another test of Starship as soon as possible. But it will have to wait until the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) completes its investigation of the launchsite damage and approves a new test.

A. To explore a new asteroid system.
B. To collect data on the Didymos system.
C. To return to the moon for further research.
D. To measure the effects of a previous spacecraft crash.
22. What can we learn about Boeing’s Starliner test flight
A. It will be launched in October 2024.

In rural South Africa, 16 teams of women, all of us over 50 years old, participated in this opening event — the Grannies International Football Tournament. It was 13 years in the making, built on dreams and a friendship that crosses continents.
The organizer, Beka Ntsanwisi—a well-known community activist and cancer survivor—founded the original team of soccer-playing grandmothers aged 40 to 80, some 15 years ago, to improve their health. At first the locals laughed at them and told them they belonged at home caring for their grandchildren. But a team doctor recorded results from their regular exercise: improved mobility, lowered blood pressure and better digestion.
In 2010, the international spotlight landed the team an invitation to travel and play in a tournament in Massachusetts. Like the Grannies, I found soccer later in life and my Lexington, Massachusetts teammates are among my best friends. Beka replied to my invitation without hesitation: “We will come, my sister.” In July 2010, 15 Grannies streamed through the Boston airport. They wowed us with their dancing on the sidelines of the field and their enthusiasm for life. And during that visit, Beka announced, “Before I die, I want to host a Grannies World Cup.”
In March, 2023, Beka’s 13-year wish to host a Grannies international tournament was finally and joyfully met. The tournament, held in the town of Nkowankowa, was intense as France, Zambia, three South African teams, and all three U. S. teams entered the quarterfinals on the fourth and final day. My team would settle for second place, but the U. S. Breakers, also from Massachusetts, held the 3-foot-tall trophy (奖杯)in the air. The goalkeeper presented the trophy to Beka and the host Grannies team, without whom this event would never have taken place. We know Beka is the true champion.
For me, the Grannies tournament was an extraordinary gift, an experience I will not forget. For all of us, we hold on to our memories of bonding with our soccer sisters.
24. What can we learn about the original team founded by Beka
A. It was 13 years in the making.
B. It received support from the locals.
C. It promoted the wellbeing of its members.
D. It consisted of middle-aged women players.
25. Why did the 15 Grannies fly to Boston in July 2010
A. To take part in a football competition.
B. To make the football teams cheer for their performance.
C. To share their football playing stories.
D. To learn to play football professionally.
26. What did the goalkeeper intend to do by gifting Beka the trophy
A. Honor Beka’s football skill. B. Share the joy of their success.
C. Acknowledge Beka’s initiative. D. Declare victory for the host team.
27. What is the best title for the text
A. My Soccer Life with Grannies.
B. My Granny’s Enthusiasm for Soccer
C. Inspired by Soccer: An International Tour
D. Celebrating Grannies: A Global Soccer Event
C
“Dinner’s ready!” Do you recognize that familiar call for everyone to gather round the table and tuck in Whether it’s a takeaway with friends or a family get-together during holiday seasons, humans have been eating together for thousands of years. But why
The discovery of fire may have kick started communal eating for our hunter-gatherer ancestors, according to primatologist(灵长类动物学家) Richard Wrangham. Cooking a meal all those years ago required a social group — you needed someone to hunt the food, someone to protect the food from thieves or predators, and of course, someone to cook. And once enjoying the feast, evolutionary psychologist Robin Dunbar guesses that the fire’s bright light may have given the humans longer nights and provided great opportunities for bonding over food.
But modern humans don’t face the same threats as we used to — we can cook and eat a meal by ourselves. So why should we still make group meals a routine In Dunbar’s 2017 study Breaking Bread: the Functions of Social Eating’, they found communal eating increased feelings of wellbeing and connectedness with the community. Despite this, the study found a third of weekday evening meals in the UK are eaten in isolation — the main cause being busy work schedules.
Today’s reality is that having meals together can be difficult. Time management, fussy eaters, and family tensions are all things that can get in the way. But, in an article about overthinking family meals, Susannah Ayre and colleagues write ‘Five tips to ease the pressure’, including dropping the need for perfection. “There is no shame in reheating a frozen meal” or “eating on a picnic rug in the living room”.
Sharing meals may look different today than it did for our ancestors, but the essence stays the same: food is more than just fuel. It can be a way to connect, share stories and strengthen bonds.
28. What does the underlined phrase “tuck in” mean
A. Start eating B. Beg for food
C. Discuss what to eat D. Sit still
29. According to Richard Wrangham, what might have initiated communal eating among our hunter-gatherer ancestors
A. The invention of cooking utensils B. The discovery of fire
C. The need for protection from wild animals D. The desire for social interaction
30. How does the author support the idea that communal eating is important in modern society
A. By presenting personal anecdotes
B. By comparing and contrasting different cultures
C. By analyzing scientific studies
D. By giving examples of famous people who value communal eating
31. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To provide tips on how to make family meals less stressful
B. To promote the idea that food is only meant for fuel
C. To criticize the busy lifestyles that prevent people from eating together
D. To discuss the evolution of communal eating and its importance in modern society
D
The ocean feels boundless. If you were to start swimming from shore, it’s easy to believe —fitness and oxygen aside — you could continue forever. That’s a far different experience to overland travel, where mountains, rivers, and highways jammed with traffic prevents easy passage. It’s equally easy to believe that fish and other highly mobile sea creatures could smoothly experience the ocean. These animals, adapted over thousands of years to navigate the ocean, must easily bypass(绕过) any barrier around which they can theoretically swim. That assumption, though, is wrong.
It’s common for many oceanic species to stick to specific habitats and only seldom swim beyond them. That is especially true for many immature animals, which are small and easy to fall victim to predators. This, however, can cause unexpectedly big problems for oceanic species, especially when infrastructure(基础设施) gets in the way.
Take, for example, the green sawfish living near the mouth of the Ashburton River in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. In 2017, engineers working on a local oil and gas processing plant built a new loading facility consisting of a large piling jetty (码头) and solid rock wall, which stretched 500 meters offshore. Later, scientists realized that the green sawfish were unable, or unwilling, to pass around the barrier. But that could prevent the animals from reaching valuable feeding grounds and other habitats.
This discovery leads to a surprising new idea: that sea animals, much like land species, need a helping hand getting around human infrastructure. In the case of the green sawfish, engineers could have created underpasses in the jetty through which the fish could swim.
As the climate continues to change, many sea species are moving farther north and they need suitable habitats to move through. Whether creating pass-throughs in artificial structures or plotting routes away from warming oceans, thoughtfully designing our infrastructure could go a long way toward protecting animals as we continue to engineer the ocean.
32. What is the misunderstanding mentioned in the first paragraph
A. Sea creatures adapt to the ocean slowly.
B. The ocean presents no barriers to sea life.
C. Humans are naturally skilled at sea navigation.
D. Sea travel guarantees easier passage than land travel.
33. Why are the green sawfish mentioned in the passage
A. To illustrate a point. B. To present a new research.
C. To put forward a new argument. D. To add some background information.
34. What does the author suggest about engineering the ocean
A. Maximizing economic benefits.
B. Prioritizing human infrastructures.
C. Creating underpasses for surfers.
D. Accommodating oceanic species’ needs.
35. Where could this passage come from
A. A geography textbook. B. An entertainment forum.
C. A scientific magazine. D. A travel blog.

A GIFT FOR GRANDPA
Summer vacation was coming. Jack and his brother Berlin were filled with excitement as they thought of visiting their grandparents again.
The big day came at last. After the happy family got ready, they set out for the grandparents’ eagerly. On the way, the brothers were excitedly talking about the fun they had with grandparents.
A little blue house with a tall white chimney finally appeared. Behind the property was the forest carrying their good memories with Grandpa. They arrived at the driveway, at the end of which Grandma was waiting for them joyfully.
Jack and Berlin each gave Grandma a big hug and then swept to the living room, shouting excitedly “Grandpa, we are back!”
Seeing his grandsons, Grandpa was wild with joy and tried to get up with all his strength from the chair but in vain. A helpless expression flashed on his face. Grandma explained that his health was declining rapidly and maybe couldn’t stand up on his own forever. But Grandpa declared stubbornly (倔强地), “I can!” Certainly, he was stuck in his boyish way. Mum and grandparents were happy to meet again after a long time. They sat together and chatted about what happened recently.
The brothers were soon bored with adult conversation, went out and wandered into the forest. Tall trees stretched up to the heavens with large branches crossing each other, while young ones rose straight like soldiers. Grandpa was once a great explorer full of wisdom. He could tell where the birds came from only by their calls and songs. The trees, birds, lizards, lots of bugs… How many merry moments they spent with Grandpa in the kingdom!
But now Grandpa couldn’t get up. This made them worried. “We’d think out a way to cheer him up.” Jack said. “Grandpa is a bird lover, and we can catch him a bird.” Berlin suggested. “But he hates birds being caged!” Jack shook his head.

【参考答案】
Then a bright idea came to Jack’s mind. “Why not make a cane (拐杖) out of a young tree!” Berlin thought it was a good idea. When the two brothers reached an agreement, they quickly ran back to their grandfather’s house, got the tools they needed to make the cane, and ran back to the woods. In the woods, they worked hard to find a straight tree and set to work. After cutting the tree down, they took the bark (树皮) off with a knife. After an hour, a hand-made cane was finally made, which was smooth and was just of the right size. The two brothers were sure that their grandpa would love it!
Jack and Berlin handed the cane to Grandpa. The moment grandpa took the cane with shaking hands, he cried with joy, “This is made by my grandsons themselves. How precious it is!” Jack shouted, “Grandpa, we hope this cane will help you stand up and come with us to explore the woods!” Grandpa smiled at the boys and seized the cane in his right hand, trying to stand up. To their amazement, he did it! Everyone was excited to see grandpa stand up. At that moment, Jack noticed grandfather’s eyes were wet. What a wonderful gift he had ever got!
