Decades ago, my friend Caetlin received a peculiar assignment from the poet Robert L. Hass,
who was then her undergraduate literature professor. He instructed each student to memorize three
poems from The Norton Anthology of American Literature not for any urgent academic reason but
to prepare them for their unavoidable future solitude, claiming that you’re going to be alone, and
poetry is going to be all you have.
The act of memorizing a poem seemed curiously old-fashioned in an era when few of us
encounter poetry at all. I mostly devoted myself to prose(散文). It was only in my 40s that I began
to change my ways. It happened in a flight to Seattle. For hours, I read nothing else but a poem,
sometimes going through, sometimes repeating over and over. At the end of my flight, I had all 40
lines in my head. Memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime. The boredom of repetition
reduces the great charm it has. But as you keep trying, the lines finally come together again, and the
scattered text transforms back into a treasure, often a more valuable one than it was before.
In other words, poetry perpetuates itself by becoming a part of those who read it. It can do so
only because it is so specific, so entirely different, that taking it in expands our own sense of what
we are.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are already fading, and that’s fine. I know if I spend a little
time with them, they’ll sing in me again. Others keep thumping(重击) in me like a new pulse. I
won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more—
more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become.

Payne, who rose to fame at just 16 as a band member in Britain in 2010, faced huge pressure
from a young age, which impacted his mental health. In an attempt to handle the stresses of his
early stardom, he turned to alcohol and drugs, and finally ended his own life. The tragedy of

should be banned from becoming pop stars. He pointed out many young stars were pushed into
intense schedules, often performing up to 200 dates yearly in different places. “They’re always busy.

Chambers said.
Research has shown that young artists came easily down with mental issues. A 2021 study

While interacting with others, we convey content with our words, primarily, and intent(意图)
with our body language. And we humans care about intent even more than content because intent
can either reinforce or destroy content.
One of the most debated areas of intent is finding whether or not someone is lying. An
enormous amount of human effort has gone into increasing our ability to detect liars. The FBI and
the CIA have studied the problem extensively. The great American psychologist Paul Ekman
devoted much of his research to it, and any number of training programs to increase our accuracy in
detecting lies. What has been the outcome Lying studies determined that humans, after all the

effort, are only about 54 percent accurate in detecting liars. That’s only slightly better than random
guessing or coin-flipping.
The researchers tested experiment participants who watched videos where some speakers were
lying and some were telling the truth. The participant caught the liars only 43 percent of the time
and picked the truth-tellers only 48 percent of the time. That’s worse than flipping a coin! Then, the
researchers tested the unconscious readings(潜意识反应) of the volunteers by measuring their
response. They did much better.
Here’s a quick way to improve your lie detection right away. First of all, don’t look for specific
“tells”. Look at the whole face and body, going soft focus, and ask yourself: sincere or insincere

M: Good evening, everyone. In tonight’s program-People in History, I’d like to tell you something
about Stephanie Louise Kwolek. As a young girl, Stephanie was different from her classmates. She
was an excellent reader with an extremely good memory. She was also very good at math.
Stephanie’s love of learning came from her father. Every night when he came home from work, he
sat and read a book or newspaper. He was a scientist who studies nature. Together, the father and
the daughter would walk into the woods, collecting leaves, flowers, and seeds. Stephanie stuck her
finds in a scrapbook. Her father helped her label and write descriptions of them. He died when she
was 10, but their early explorations together inspired Stephanie to pursue a career in science. As
Stephanie grew older, she decided to use science to help people and become a doctor. She studied
chemistry in college, but when she graduated, she couldn’t afford to go to medical school. Instead,
she worked and saved money. She got a job as a chemist at the DuPont Company. The job was
supposed to be temporary, but Stephanie fell in love with it and never looked back. Her work at
DuPont combined her childhood love of science and fabric with her interest in helping people and
solving problems, and her creations would change the world.
