The“sunshine of a clean mind”has come one step closer, say researchers working on methods to erase memories of fear.
Published in the journal Neuron by Cho and his team, the research shows how the team used mice to study the pathways between the area of the brain that processes a specific sound and the area responsible for emotional memories. In the first part of the experiment the team played high-pitched(高音的)and low-pitched sounds to mice, both with a small electric shock to their feet. They noticed when the high-pitched sound was later played on its own,the mice became still with fear;no such behavior was seen when the low-pitched sound was played. The team found that when mice were repeatedly given high-pitched sounds without the shocks they lost their fear —a process known as fear extinction.
“Fear extinction is a therapy(疗法)used in treating post-traumatic stress disorder,”said Cho.But he said,“after therapy, for example two weeks, the fear returns.Fear extinction is not an eraser of fear memory. It just hides the fear memory for a short time.”
But the team later discovered that using a method called optogenetics, they could truly erase the fear memories. They introduced specific genes(基因)into the brain cells(细胞)of the mice. These genes made the cells react to light, allowing researchers to control them. When the mice, who had developed the fear of the high-pitched sound, were in the low-frequency light,it weakened the connections in their brain related to that sound. As a result, the mice no longer appeared fearful when they heard the high-pitched sound, and the fear didn't return.
Peter Giese,a professor of mental health science, said it was too soon to think of using this research to help those with mental disorders, saying it would raise ethical(伦理的) concerns to use such methods on people.“Exactly how this can be applied to humans is a little bit unclear to me,"he said.Nevertheless,Giese said the study was a big advance. "This is a true erasure of the memory,"he said.
32.What did the first part of the experiment focus on
A.The process of how memories are formed.
B.The cause of the mice's emotional change.
C.The role of electric shock in shaping mice's behavior.
D.The connections between sounds and emotional memory.
33.What can be concluded about fear extinction
A.It can help remove fear memory. B.It is not an effective long-term treatment.
C:It may improve other emotional memories. D.It might be replaced by a genetic method soon.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A.The discovery of a new gene that controls fear.
B.The use of optogenetics to remove fear memories.
C.The introduction of light in the newly-found genetic method.
D.The value of the findings on sound processing and fear erasure.
35.What is Peter Giese's attitude toward the application of optogenetics to humans
A.Cautious. B.Uninterested. C.Appreciative. D.Disapproving.

A Day in the Animal Shelter
Recently,I spent a day volunteering at a local animal shelter with my classmates, and it was a day filled with unexpected joy.
Upon arrival,a shelter worker provided us with a brief introduction of the animals there and some instructions on how to care for them. Then we set to work, feeding the animals, cleaning the cages and playing with them. One particular moment that stood out was when a shy puppy gradually opened up to me,wagging its tail and nuzzling my hand for affection.
This experience has deepened my appreciation for the act of giving. It was heartwarming to see how a little love and care could brighten others' world, and in turn, enrich ours and make us grow.
