During evenings spent with her crafting(手工艺)group,Kate Smith has produced a host of lovely pieces:hand-made bags, summer dresses, and even jewellery. But the thing she's most proud of creating is a group of close friends that value each other's company.
The four members of the group,Smith,Ratnett,Jenny and Clark, whose children were of the similar ages, first met at the school gate in the village of Marshfield.Later Smith ran a shop called Makery, selling craft materials and running in-store workshops. When the four got chatting,it turned out that they all showed interest in crafting and had all popped into the shop at one time or another. From then on,they have been meeting regularly to get crafty, taking it in turns to host at home.
During their craft nights, the group will either work on their own projects or deal with a craft task together.Everyone will bring something delicious to eat, always Clark's famous homemade bread, sometimes chocolates or a bottle of prosecco. But although all four women love to get their craft on,the real highlight of the evening is the chance to catch up.

The number of pandas, which once were an endangered species, has grown continuously in recent years, partly thanks to the introduction of the special pandas born in captivity(圈养)but trained from birth to return to nature.
The first stage of the training begins in the first year of life in an area of around 2,000 square meters. This allows experts to monitor them more easily and minimize the damage they may suffer.During this period, the baby pandas learn to find water sources, something necessary for their survival. In the second stage, once they turn one year old, their diet changes and in addition to mother's milk they need bamboo. They will learn to find bamboo, how to stay away from their natural enemies and how to seek shelter to avoid danger. In this second stage, the area in which they move enlarges to over 20 thousand square meters,a surface similar to that of the habitat in which they find themselves when they live in the wild.
After those training and final physical examinations, captive pandas are well-prepared to explore the wild world. When they go back to the wild, they wear collars(颈圈)to provide a helpful tracking sign to inform the wildlife protection experts.Mu Shijie is one of these experts who is backed by a giant panda monitoring“dream team”,whose daily duty is to monitor the wild giant pandas in the nature reserve as well as the captive giant pandas after being set free.
The World Wide Fund for Nature said in a statement that there was a "promising trend"in the wild population of pandas and that rewilding could help deal with the risk of inbreeding(近 亲繁殖) “After decades of work,it is clear that the future of pandas and their forest home depends on more effective measures, especially with the increasing effect of climate change."a spokesperson said.

According to the Gallup World Poll for the World Happiness Report 2024,America has fallen out of the top 20 happiest countries for the first time. This is not surprising considering the rising costs of living and a number of daily disturbing news reports. But the key factor is that social media has replaced in-person interaction and often creates a feeling of missing out.One way that companies can help deal with these challenges is holding community-building activities and providing employees(雇员)with social purpose.
A recent study by Ares Management Corporation looked into the effects of workplace volunteer programs, conducting interviews with more than 5,100 employees across five countries. The goal of this study was to understand how acts of selflessness change the givers. The results stress the fact that volunteering enriches the lives of both receivers and volunteers. According to the study, employees who participate in workplace volunteer programs are more likely than nonparticipants to be content with their jobs and chances for professional growth.
Many companies make efforts to offer more time away from the office to make it easy for their employees to volunteer. One of the best examples is IBM,a leader in this space, recognizing the benefits of investing in community service for its employees. The company sponsors its employees on multi-week service projects in developing countries.Enabling volunteers to take much time away from office to travel abroad to make an effect creates a life-changing experience for both the workers and the communities they are supporting.
Especially in times like today, when we face so many worries and stresses that are out of our control, volunteering offers mental improvement by bringing people together and giving them a way to make a positive difference. And there are no more meaningful ways to improve employee wellness and satisfaction.
32.What's the major cause in the reduction of happiness in America
A.Increasing living expenses.
B.Various social media apps.
C.Less face-to-face communication.
D.Countless troublesome information.
33.According to paragraph 2,the study mainly focuses on
A.how workplace volunteer programs affect employees
B.what workplace volunteer programs bring to the community
C.whether workplace volunteer programs should be carried out
D.why workplace volunteer programs are popular across countries
34.Why does the author mention the example of IBM
A.To praise the employees in IBM.
B.To advocate volunteering abroad.
C.To comment on a new voluntary model.
D.To show companies' support for volunteering.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Volunteering:Bring People Together

M:I just love dogs.I think I want to get one.
W:That's a pretty big decision. Why do you want a dog
M:I've always loved dogs. When I was a child, our dog Scooby went everywhere with me.
W:Dogs make great pets because they're so faithful to their owners.
M:Exactly. Now I live by myself, and sometimes I feel lonely.A dog would be good company.
W:Some dogs are good at defending their owners, too.Since you live alone,it might be helpful to have a dog that can bark at night and scare away thieves.
M:True.Plus,I could take the dog out for walks. It would get me out of the house.
W:That's good exercise for both of you.
M:Yes.And I definitely need more exercise.Caring for a dog would help me with that.

When I was eight,I moved from my family's farm to live in the city.We moved because my mother got a new job,and it made sense to move to the city.I think it was good for my parents. They wanted to live in the city and our town was very poor, but I didn't want to move. At first,I hated it so much. There were too many people and it was always so noisy.Worst of all, I had to leave all of my friends! For almost two years,I was mad about having to live there. Three years later I started to like the city.I realized that I should just enjoy what I had and stop thinking about what I didn't have. What really changed my mind about the city were all the new things to try.I was able to do some new activities in the city.I met so many amazing people along the way!
