Social-Media Influencers Aren't Getting Rich—They're Barely Getting By
By Sarah E. Needleman and Ann-Marie Alcántara
Many people dream of becoming social-media stars. But for most who pursue careers as content creators, just making ends meet is a lofty goal.
Clint Brantley has been a full-time creator for three years, posting videos on TikTok, YouTube and Twitch. Despite having more than 400,000 followers, and posts that average 100,000 views, his income last year was less than the median annual pay for full-time U.S. workers in 2023.
Earning a decent, reliable income as a social-media creator is a slog—and it’s getting harder. Platforms are doling out less money for popular posts and brands are being pickier about what they want out of sponsorship deals.
A small number of creators shot to fame, propelling the occupation to the top of career wish lists for many teens (and adults). But behind the scenes, creators say the job is grueling. They need to constantly produce compelling posts or risk losing momentum. They spend their days planning, filming and editing posts while also working to make inroads with advertisers and interacting with fans.
Like other self-employed professionals, creators don’t get paid time off, healthcare benefits, retirement contributions and other perks that companies typically provide for their workers. Creators, meanwhile, are having a tougher time attracting viewers, thanks to algorithm changes and other factors beyond their control.

If you’re a freshman who is hoping to begin your college career on solid footing, the following tips can help.
Always go to class. Mark Beal, a college professor, says skipping class is one of the easiest things to do. 11 “Never skip class,” he says. “And be an active participant - listen, take notes and ask or answer questions.” You have the chance to learn more this way. 12 “The students I have taught who have taken this strategic approach are the same students who I am eager to recommend for future jobs,” says Beal.
13 Tammy Huang, an interviewer for Harvard Admissions, says college freshmen should go out of their way to meet people that can help make their college experience a success. Huang recommends forming a positive support group by joining meaningful clubs and making friends with people within your dorm or other organizations that match your interests and goals. Take care of your mental health.
A little anxiety is normal as you transition into (过渡) college life, says Cory Trevena, Senior Director of Education at Caron Treatment Centers. “But if you’re feeling hopeless for days on end, it’s time to reach out.” 14 Trevena points out that campus counseling (心理咨询) centers offer services that can reduce students’ psychological stress.
Be mindful about money.
Brian Gawor from RNL, a platform company that helps colleges and universities increase student enrollment, says freshmen should learn to use what is already available and paid for at school. 15 Also learn about the tutoring (辅导), help with writing, and technology assistance that are available at your school. “You’ll find a lot of value in these things you’re probably already paying for with your tuition,” notes Gawor.
A.Focus on networking.
B.Join an interesting club.
C.Where can you go for help
D.How can you figure out if you are desperate
E.However, this is one big mistake you should avoid.
F.Also, you never know who is paying attention to you and your actions.
G.For example, don’t spend a ton on dining out while also paying for a meal plan.
