When Suzanne Heywood was seven, she was pulled out of school to go on a three-year voyage around the world. The family of three from the UK set out on their search to recreate Captain Cook's voyage around the globe, which ended up taking a decade instead of the promised three years. While her parents described the opportunity as a “privilege"(特权), Suzanne compared it to being locked up in prison.
Now 55 years old, Suzanne has shared her tale of survival on TikTok, and recalled her 10 years at sea in her tell-all memoir(回忆录) Wavewalker. She shared details of a perilous journey from South Africa to Australia where the boat hit an enormous storm. “The waves became bigger and finally one crashed over the boat," she recalled. "I was thrown against the ceiling of the cabin, cracking my skull and breaking my nose. Three days later, we found a little island where I had multiple head operations consciously."
In order to get through her "very strange" childhood, Suzanne was determined to get an education, which was her only hope to lead a normal life. While remote education wasn't an option in 1969, Suzanne signed up for an Australian correspondence school when she was 13 and studied in the cabin of the boat. When she was 16, her parents sent her to a school in New Zealand while they continued sailing. Despite the gaps in her education, Suzanne eventually landed a spot at Oxford University and after saving up money she'd earned working on a farm, Suzanne bought a one-way plane ticket back to the UK.
Suzanne's book instantly became a bestseller and her tale touched the hearts of millions. " Wavewalker is one of the best books I've read. I'm so sorry you went through all that," one person replied, while another said, " Your story has a great impact on me and I realize I can change my life no matter when and how. "

C. Life is a journey, not a destination. D. Where there's a will, there's a way.

Community and environmental groups near the petrochemical(石化产品) plants have long argued that it is unfair that places such as the Houston shipping channel, the upper Ohio Valley and the area near the church in southern Louisiana known as " Cancer Alley" have high concentrations of polluting petrochemical facilities in neighborhoods that are economically and politically ignored.
“They are low-income, minority communities that often are sitting right in the same spot where we've seen historic prejudice by facilities for years on years, " Beyond Petrochemicals Campaign Executive Heather Toney said.
"When you see industry continually identifying your community as a sacrifice so that the rest of the world can have their plastic fork with their takeout, it begs the question, are we really focusing on the health and well- being of all of our citizens " Toney asked.
She joined representatives from fence-line communities to the latest United Nations negotiations on a global plastics treaty(条约) in Busan, South Korea, late last month. Those talks ended without an agreement for a treaty, yet another round of talks is scheduled for 2025. The treaty negotiators are considering a range of policy actions to limit the environmental and human health damage from plastic waste, including improvements to waste collection, the removal of the most harmful plastics and ways to boost the unacceptable low rates of plastic recycling. But for the people living near petrochemical plants, one policy approach is far more important. " We have to get to a place where we're turning off the tap or at least turning down the production to deal with the plastic waste we have and stop creating as much,“ Toney said. “Honestly, this is not a situation we can recycle our way out of. "
A proposed cap on plastic production proved to be the most difficult sticking point in the negotiations, as the petrochemical industry and oil-producing nations such as Saudi Arabia objected to it. But Toney and her colleagues from fence-line communities remarked, "The talks have given us a sense that a strong and effective treaty could potentially ease the pollution burden we face due to plastics. "
28. What is the main concern of people near the petrochemical plants
A. The historic prejudice. B. The high cost of living.
C. The lack of job opportunities. D. The severe neighborhood pollution.
29. Why are petrochemical plants located in certain communities according to Toney
A. To earn local governments' support. B. To take advantage of forgotten areas.
C. To enhance the convenience of takeout. D. To stimulate the growth of plastic industry.
30. What does Toney think is the most important policy
A. Raising recycling rates. B. Banning harmful plastics.
C. Improving waste collection. D. Limiting new plastic production.
31. How do the fence-line communities feel about the prospect of the negotiations
A. Hopeful. B. Doubtful. C. Pessimistic. D. Overjoyed.
D
The hero's journey-this timeless narrative(叙述) structure, first described by the American writer Joseph Campbell in 1949, is found in historical stories, such as the Odyssey, and modem favorites, including the Harry Potter. Many hero's journey stories have become cultural touchstones that influence how people think about their world and themselves.
To explore the connection between people's life stories and the hero's journey, we had our first study. We collected life stories from 1, 200 people in Chicago. We used sets of questions to measure the storytelling participants' sense of meaning in life, amount of life satisfaction and level of depression. We then examined these stories for the seven elements of the hero's journey ; a lead role, a shift of circumstances, a long search, a challenge, an association, a personal transformation and a resulting legacy(遗产).
In our first study, we found that people who had more hero's journey elements in their life stories reported more meaning in life, more happiness and less depression. We also found that hero's journey narratives provided more benefits, often including a “redemptive” narrative, where a person's life story goes from defeat to victory.
We then wondered whether adjusting one's life story to be more "heroic" would increase feelings of meaning in life. We developed a "restorying" intervention in which we urged people to retell their stories as a hero's journey. Participants first identified each of the seven elements in their life, and then we encouraged them to put these pieces together and form a logical narrative.
In another study with more than 1,700 participants, we confirmed that this restorying intervention worked; it helped people see their life as a hero's journey, which in tum made that life feel more meaningful. Intervention recipients(接受者) also reported greater life satisfaction and became more adaptable in the face of personal challenges. Besides, these intervention recipients saw difficulties more positively and dealt with them more creatively in their later life.
So, though you may never save the world on a massive scale, you could save yourself and become a hero in the context of your own life.
32. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about
A. What the study showed. B. Why the study was conducted.
C. How the study was carried out. D. Whether the study was a success.
33. What can be inferred from the first study
A. Hero's journey elements promote well-being.
B. Hero's journey narratives offer no advantages.
C. A hero's life story must go from defeat to success.
D. A personal transformation may make life meaningless.
34. How did the participants benefit from the restorying intervention
A. They created a better public image.
B. They became more responsible individuals.
C. They developed a deeper sense of purpose in life.
D. They shaped a more optimistic approach to hardship.
35. What is the most suitable title for the text
A. An Exciting Life Story Leads to a Hero's Journey
B. A Meaningful Life Comes From a Hero's Journey
C. To Lead a Meaningful Life, Become Your Own Hero
D. To Become Your Own Hero, Read more Hero Stories

Protecting the Ecological Environment
As we all know, the ecological environment is crucial for the survival and development of all life on Earth. It provides us with essential resources such as clean air, fresh water, and rich soil. 36
Industrialization has led to increased emissions(排放) of pollutants into the air and water. Factories release large amounts of waste gases and liquids, which not only damage the quality of the air we breathe but also pollute rivers and lakes. 37 Vast areas of trees are being cleared for agriculture, logging, and urban expansion. This destroys the habitats of countless species and contributes to soil loss.
38 Governments around the world have been passing stricter environmental laws and regulations. These laws are effective in controlling industrial pollution. For example, they set limits on the amount of pollutants that factories can release and require heavy fines as punishment.
Renewable energy sources are also being increasingly used. Solar and wind energy, in particular, are catching on. 39 Renewable energy sources can reduce our dependence on fossil(化石) fuels and lower carbon emissions.
In addition, individuals can also play a vital role in protecting the ecological environment. We can start with simple things in our daily lives, such as saving water and electricity. 40 We can also choose to use public transportation or bicycles instead of private cars.
Moreover, raising public awareness of environmental protection is essential. Only when everyone realizes the importance of protecting the ecological environment as well as takes action can we hope to have a sustainable future.
A. Deforestation is another major issue.
B. This helps to conserve energy and reduce waste.
C. Cutting carbon emissions is essential for our welfare.
D. After all, their cost may add too much burden to our lives.
E. They are clean and sustainable alternatives to traditional energy.
F. To address the threats, human beings are urged to take some measures.
G. However, human activities have been posing a serious threat to it recently.

Ally and I first met at a local riding club, where we were both eager beginners, learning the basics bf horseback riding. Our friendship quickly developed as we discovered our shared passion for horses and the excitement of riding a horse across open fields. We spent countless hours together, talking about everything under the sun as we watched the horses playing happily and lively.
Ally was very passionate about riding, and it was a joy to share that enthusiasm with her. However, being someone who set high standards for myself and those I cared about, I sometimes found myself pushing her to improve her skills, even if it meant being a bit demanding.
One sunny afternoon, during a particularly challenging riding exercise, I suggested a technique that involved a tight turn and a quick jump over a low fence.
“That's too risky, " Ally protested, biting her lips in concern. “I'm not ready for that yet.”
"Come on, Ally," I urged, tapping my foot impatiently. "You've got to push yourself if you want to get better."
Our voices rose, and soon we were locked in a heated discussion, and even our horses sensed the tension and became restless. Finally, we both accepted that we had different points of view and decided to leave it at that. But the leftover tension caused a slight but noticeable gap between us.
One evening after that argument, as I was helping my parents close up the store, my phone rang. It was Ally. I picked up the phone, my heart still heavy from our earlier disagreement.
“Hey," she began, her voice full of hope. “I was thinking we could try that technique again. I feel like I'm ready now. "
I shook my head even though she couldn't see me. "I don't think that's a good idea,' I replied, my tone firm.
She paused, and I could almost hear her disappointment. “Okay," she said softly. “I'll see you then."

第一节:应用文写作(满分15分)
Dear Kevin,
I’m Li Hua from Class 2. I am writing to seek your expert advice on my one-week trip to the UK this summer, given your decade-long experience as a tour guide.
Firstly, I would like to know about some must-visit attractions in the UK. I'm particularly interested in historical landmarks, cultural sites, and stunning natural scenery. It would be wonderful if you could suggest some places that are less crowded but still offer a unique experience.
Secondly, I would appreciate any tips or advice you have for traveling in the UK. This could include information on transportation options, local customs, places to try traditional cuisines, and any safety precautions to keep in mind while exploring.
I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
The next afternoon, I received a call from Ally’s mother. Her voice was trembling as she told me that Ally had been in an accident while riding. “She tried that technique you mentioned,” she said quietly. “She fell and broke her leg.” On hearing this, I felt a wave of guilt washing over me. “I’m so sorry to hear that,” I stammered, my voice cracking. “I never meant for her to get hurt.” I realized I should have been more supportive and patient, understanding that everyone has their own pace in learning. This realization weighed heavily on me, and I knew I needed to make up for it.
I rushed to the hospital and found Ally with a cast on her leg. As I sat beside her, I apologized sincerely for my behavior. “I’m so sorry, Ally,” I said, tears welling up in my eyes. “I should never have pushed you so hard. Your safety is more important than any riding achievement.” Ally smiled weakly, forgiving me with a reassuring look. We chatted joyfully, talking about the importance of listening to each other and respecting our limits. From that moment, I promised to be a better friend, one who supports and encourages her without being overly demanding. Our friendship, though tested, became stronger through mutual understanding and forgiveness.

听力部分录音稿
(Text 1)
W:What kind of sport do you like, Mike?
M: I once learned tennis, but I was not good at it. Then I preferred basketball, but now I think nothing can compare with football and it is my favourite now.
(Text 2)
W: How did you like the film No Country for Old Men last night?
M: It’s far from interesting. I'd rather I had stayed at home and had a good sleep.
(Text 3)
M: Shirley, the concert will begin at seven tonight. Shall we meet at ten to six and head for the stadium together?
W: Well, David, I might be babysitting my brother then. Could we make it twenty minutes later than that?
M: No problem.
(Text 4)
M:Well, put yourself in my shoes, what would you do then?
W: If Judy were my daughter, I would not worry about her. Her math teacher has already given her special help after school. She is less likely to fail the course.
(Text 5)
M:What are you doing, Sara?
W: My younger brother Simon likes planes, so I want to make a paper one as his toy. I've tried three times, but none of those planes flew well!
M: You need to fold the wings in half.
W: OK, I'll try.
(Text 6)
W: Honey, how are we going to Sydney for Martin's wedding Today is Wednesday. There are only three days to go.
M: Should we fly It can save us a great deal of time. We need to arrive one day earlier, on Friday.
W: But it's too costly. What about renting a car?
M: You are not skilled in driving. I'll get too tired if I drive all the time. Let's take the train. We could set off early.
W: OK. Then we won't miss the beautiful scenery on the way.
M: And we can also rest well.
(Text 7)
W: Mr. Morant, we're considering writing a report. Could you help us with it?
M:What is it about, Julia?
W: It's about young people's music preference. Music is important and it may change us gradually. We want to know how music affects us.
M: Sounds interesting. What can I do for you? Do you need me to check your report?
W: Actually I wonder if you could help us with these surveys. We did some research in several middle schools among students between the ages of 13 and 15. And we need to know more about other age groups.
M:You mean I help you hand out these surveys and then take them back? That's easy. When do I need to give them back to you?
W: By next Sunday.
M: Sure, no problem.
(Text 8)
W: Welcome to our show, Jim. Today our topic is "career". What is your ideal job?
M: Thank you, Lucy. Well, I have always dreamed of being a great English teacher. And luckily, that's my current job.
W: Is that a demanding job?
M: Yes, I think so, although people suppose that being a teacher is easy and boring.
W:What problem do you think you have when doing that job?
M: I have some problems keeping my students organized orderly and focused on tasks. Now I'm trying my best to improve that skill.
W:Is it hard to make your dream come true?
M: Every job needs time and effort, and a teacher does as well. Apart from the academic knowledge I was taught at university, I had to learn many other soft skills.
W: Why do you choose that job?
M: really admire my high school English teacher, and want to be like him- patient, thoughtful and sympathetic. My parents both approve of my decision.
W: Does the job have anything to do with your major at university?
M: Sure. I studied English Language and Literature, which does support me a lot in my career path.
W: What does the society think about your job?
M: I'm not quite sure, but I'm proud to be a teacher, an honorable job and I also believe in what I'm doing right now.
(Text 9)
W: Hey, Eric. You look so great!
M: Hey, Linda. I go to the gym every day. The proper training really pays off. Now I'm in good shape and I know more about how to keep fit.
W: I haven't worked out too long. I'm too busy with my work. I led travelers to Liverpool, London and Manchester last week and I only spent one night at home.
M: I saw from the news that almost all places of interest were crowded. Many students with their parents go traveling in July and August. You can get much exercise when you work.
W: That's true. Tell me more about how you keep fit.

(Text 10)
About 10 years ago, some friends and I went to a small restaurant for dinner in China. We finished the delicious food, asked for the check and left some money on the table. It came to 180 yuan. We left two 100-yuan notes, thanked the waiter and left. As we were an entire block away, we heard someone shouting behind us, waving a piece of paper. We quickly realized it was the waiter from the restaurant. He didn't speak English; we didn't speak Chinese. But he ran an entire block just to give us the 20 yuan, which was really surprising but moving. Since we were struggling to find the entrance to the subway then, we decided to turn to him for help. He nodded and indicated we could follow him. We walked about 3 blocks. Then he pointed to the entrance, and walked away. I couldn't believe that he should take so much trouble to help some strangers. Similar experiences repeated themselves across China. The friendliness of the people, and their eagerness to help are wonderful. I don't know if that is classified as "culture shock" but it has made me think about my own country where I rarely see such kind actions. It also inspires me to act that way no matter where I am.

【解析】The Silver Chain讲述了十六岁的Azadeh在适应新学校、处理友谊问题以及面对家庭问题等过程中的故事,展现其自我发展与自我发现的历程;The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants展现了四个好朋友的夏日冒险,体现了成长以及友谊的真谛,所以二者共同聚焦的是成长与友谊,所以选 B。
【解析】从第一段最后一句“While her parents described the opportunity as a ‘privilege’(特权),Suzanne compared it to being locked up in prison.”可以得知 Suzanne Heywood 把这次航海比作被关在监狱里,而且后文描述航海过程中遭遇巨大风暴、自己受伤等艰难危险情况,可见她认为这是一段糟糕的旅程,所以选 B。
25.【答案】C
【解析】从文中第二自然段“The waves became bigger and finally one crashed over the boat,”she recalled. “I was thrown against the ceiling of the cabin, cracking my skull and breaking my nose. 中描述了“船遭遇了巨大的风暴”“她被抛起受伤”等情节可看出这段旅程是危险的,“perilous”意思就是“危险的”,和“Dangerous”同义,所以选C。
26.【答案】B

29.【答案】B
【解析】根据第三段“When you see industry continually identifying your community as a sacrifice so that the rest of the world can have their plastic fork with their takeout, it begs the question, are we really focusing on the health and well-being of all of our citizens?”得知,Toney表示“当你看到工业不断将你的社区视为牺牲品,以便让世界其他地方的人可以用外卖塑料叉时,这不禁让人问:我们是否真的在关注所有公民的健康和福祉?”结合文章第一段的“in neighborhoods that are economically and politically ignored.”,可以推断出石化厂利用了这些被遗忘的区域来建厂,所以选 B。
30.【答案】D
【解析】根据第四段“We have to get to a place where we're turning off the tap or at least turning down the production to deal with the plastic waste we have and stop creating as much,” Toney said.
31.【答案】A
【解析】根据第五段“But Toney and her colleagues from fence-line communities remarked, The talks have given us a sense that a strong and effective agreement could potentially ease the pollution burden we face due to plastics.” 得知Toney和来自 fence-line 社区的同事表示谈判让他们感觉一份强有力的协议可能有助于减轻他们承受的塑料污染负担,结合文章第四段“Those talks ended without an agreement for a treaty, yet another round of talks is scheduled for 2025”可知,fence-line社区居民对谈判的前景是抱有希望的,用“Hopeful”来描述更合适,(“Fence-line communities”是指那些位于工业设施、工厂、矿区或其他污染源附近的社区。这些社区通常暴露在环境污染和健康风险中,因为它们与污染源的边界(“fence-line”)相邻。)所以选A。
