Lucy and her friend Jack loved being at school every day because they both really enjoyed music lessons. Lucy began playing two instruments, the piano and the violin, but she enjoyed singing more. She dreamed of being a pop star like Alex Pepper one day. Jack had a guitar and played pop and rock music very well. He wanted to be the coolest guitar player in the world.
One day, their music teacher, Mr. Brown, said to the class, “We’re going to have a music competition here at school next Friday. If you want to enter, you must sing or play a song on the school stage. Alex Pepper will be here that day for his concert at City Stadium, so I wrote to his manager and asked him to come and give you some guidance. He’ s going to decide the best performer and invite him or her to his concert.”
Lucy and Jack determined to take part in the competition as a team. They chose a song called I’ll help you! They practiced on the playground in their spare time. Lucy made such great progress that Jack was deeply absorbed in her singing and often said admirably, “How sweet your voice is!” While they pracitced, the branches of the trees around the playground were swaying(摇摆) in the wind as if they were enjoying their performance.
On the afternoon of the competition, all the students were waiting in the school hall for Alex Pepper to arrive. When he walked in with Mr. Brown, everyone clapped. Alex smiled and waved and then he and Mr. Brown sat down on special seats in front of the school stage.
Then the competition started. Lots of other students sang before Jack and Lucy. An older girl named Mary sang very well. Some students shouted “More! More!” when she finished. “She’s going to win,” thought Lucy. Soon Mr. Brown pointed to Jack and Lucy and called out that it was their turn.

The minute we got into the taxi, I had a bad feeling. The driver asked me to fasten the kid’s safety belt after I already had. His half-violent attitude made me uncomfortable.
Lev was almost 4 then. Unlike me, he cared less about the driver and focused mainly on the scenery along the way. He sang quietly to himself with his short legs waving in the air. At one point, his right sandal (凉鞋) hit the taxi’s plastic ashtray, knocking it over onto the floor. It was empty; nothing spilled. I had already bent to pick it up when the driver stopped the car suddenly, turned around to us and, with his face really close to my son’s face, began screaming. “You stupid kid. You broke my car!”
“Hey, are you crazy or something ” I shouted at the driver. “Yelling (大喊) at a 3-year-old because of a piece of plastic Turn around and start driving, or I swear, next week you will not be driving any public vehicle, you hearme ” When I saw that he was about to say something, I added,“Shut yourmouth now and drive!”
The driver gave me a hateful look. I could sense he was weighing the choice between hitting me in the face and losing hisjob. After a long moment’s silence, he took a deep breath, turned around, and drove on.
On the taxi’s radio, somebody was singing “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” but I felt very far from happy. I looked at Lev and tried to find another ray of light in that unpleasant ride, but I couldn’t. I smiled at Lev and held his hand. He looked at me hard, but didn’t smile back. “Daddy,” he asked, “what did the man say ”
“The man said,” I answered quickly, as if it were nothing, “that when you’re riding in a car, you have to watch how you move your legs so you don’t break anything.” Lev nodded, looked out the window and a second later asked, “And what did you say to the man ”
“Me ” I said to Lev, trying to gain a little time. “I told the man that he was right, but that he should say quietly and politely, and not yell.”

The weather had been unusually hot. My wife Pat and I were having a cup of coffee on our deck. There was rarely any breeze, and it was extremely wet. The sky turned dark. Lightning danced across the sky, accompanied by low, rumbling (隆隆的) thunder. The heavy air seemed to press down on us, adding to our discomfort and unease.
Suddenly, the phone rang. It was our son, David, an Army helicopter pilot. Three months earlier, he had begun a one-year assignment in a demilitarized zone (非武装区) in South Korea. David made an effort to sound cheerful, but as a man who had spent time during World War II on a small South Pacific island, I recognized the strong sense of homesickness.
A booming clap of thunder shook again.
“What was that ” David asked. “It sounded like an explosion.” “Just thunder,” Pat said.
There were several seconds of silence. “David,” I asked, “Are you still there ”
“I was thinking about what Mother said — ‘just thunder’. Other than the two of you, do you know what I miss most of all — what many of the men say they miss Thunder. We have rain, wind, snow, and some violent storms, but never thunder.” “Remember, Dad, when I was a boy, how the two of us would stretch out on the floor and listen to the thunder I wish I were there now to listen with you,” he said softly.
As soon as I hung up the phone, I got my tape recorder, my large umbrella and a wooden chair. “I’m going to record our son some thunder,” I told Pat. With lightning flashing across the sky like a display of fireworks, I sat in the driving rain beneath my umbrella and recorded half an hour of the finest Mississippi thunder a lonely man could ever want to hear. The next day I mailed the tape to David with a single line: “A special gift.”

I am a mother of three and have recently completed my college degree.
The last class had to take was Sociology (社会学). The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called “Smile”. The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and record their reactions. I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyway, so. I thought this would be a piece of cake. Soon after we were given the project, my husband, my youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s one cold March morning. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our son. We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. It did not move a bit. A strong feeling of fear welled up inside of me as turned to see why they had moved. As I turned around I smelled a terrible “dirty body” smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men. As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was “smiling”. His beautiful sky blue eyes were full of hope as he searched for acceptance.
He said “Good day” as he counted the few coins he had been holding. The second man was obviously mentally disabled. I held my tears as l stood there with them. The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said “Coffee is all. Miss” because that was all they could afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm.)
Then I really felt the desire was so great that I almost reached out and hugged the little man with the blue eyes.

“Nothing will ever be the same again,” Ally said to herself.
Ally’s father died last summer. It wasn’t fair, Ally thought. Dad was young and had never been sick. Why had his heart suddenly slopped Ally sank slowly into her father’s favorite chair and looked at his picture on the bookcase. Ally smiled. “I miss you, Dad,” she said softly.
Ally reached for the photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover was a photo of wood warbler, a tiny yellow bird with blue-gray wings and black eyes. Dad cut it from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on Dad’s face when he showed her the pretty bird. “I can’t believe someone spotted this little guy way up here in New Jersey,” he said. “Wood warblers are usually found in the south, not this far north. I bet if we search really hard, Ally, we’ll see this little guy together someday.”
Ally closed her eyes. She loved thinking about the times she and Dad had spent searching the woods for the little bird. They’d never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. He was her best friend, and when they were together, Ally felt comfortable.
“If only I could get that good feeling back.” she thought, sighing.
She felt a hand smoothing her hair and looked up. “Why don’t you come outside, Ally ” her mother asked. “The birds are nesting in the woods. By this time last year you’d already taken dozens of pictures.”
But her mother must know birdwatching wouldn’t be the same this year. How could it be Ally wondered. Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods for the special wood warbler. “I’ll be out in a while, I promise,” she answered.

This summer my swim team had to run the Snack Stand to raise money for swim meets and equipment. But Coach Edward called us all together and said, “I just got word that the Snack Stand will be canceled through August.” No Snack Stand meant no money for swim meets! Coach Edward continued, “I’m just not sure what’s going to happen. For now, let’s jump into that pool and get swimming!”
The next morning, practice felt really weird. None of us were swimming our best, and even though Coach Edward was smiling as usual, we could tell he was worried. When we got out of the pool for a break, Daniel, captain of our swimming team, said, “I’ ve been wondering if we can’t run the Snack Stand, maybe we can think of other ways to raise money.”“Good idea,” we all agreed.
At first, Coach Edward wasn’t sure about doing a big fundraiser. But once he saw how much we all wanted to help, he said, “OK! Let’s go for it!” That’s when we started brainstorming ideas for the Big Stand. “We could have a Fun in the Sun Lemonade Stand,” I suggested. “I could bring my karaoke machine from home, and the songs could be about swimming and water, “said one team member. So many kids offered to make fish cookies. We spent so much time getting everything ready and were positive that it would be a grand success.
I was squeezing lemons for lemonade the day before our big event when I saw a very dark cloud outside the kitchen window. “Uh-oh! That’s not a rain cloud, is it ” I asked my mom. “Rain would be a disaster! It could ruin everything.” “You know what they say,” she answered. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. ”“Hmm,” I said. The next day, as soon as arriving at the pool grounds, Daniel and I set up our Fun in the Sun Lemonade Stand. We had stacks of cups, and a fancy drink filled with lemonade. The weather started out just fine. Even more people than we’d expected sang songs, and gobbled cookies.

A Friendship Renewed
It was meant to be the biggest moment of their high school lives — the yearly drama competition where Judith and her closest friend Melanie were set to shine. They had worked hard on rehearsals (排练), refining every line and movement to perfection. But on the day of the grand show, their dreams fell apart.
As Melanie stumbled over (说错) her lines and the tension on stage became obvious, Judith could hear the murmurs of dissatisfaction from the audience. When the curtain finally closed, Judith turned to see Melanie’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m so sorry, Judith,” Melanie whispered. “I ruined everything.”
Judith wanted to say some words of comfort, but the pain of their failure was too fresh. Instead, she just shook her head silently and walked away.
In the days that followed, Judith and Melanie’ s once-close friendship began to fall apart. Melanie, feeling guilty, stayed away from the drama club, avoiding Judith and any chance to perform. Judith, on the other hand, poured her sorrow into her academics.
A few weeks later, their school organized an outdoor team-building trip, so the two friends had to face the problems between them. Paired together for a series of challenging activities, they didn’t work well with each other. Then their friendly instructor Freya discovered their tension.
“I can see there’ s something holding you two back,” Freya said, her eyes studying the girls. “Want to share what’s going on ”
“It’s just...” Melanie began. “We used to be so close, but then I messed up that big show, and I...” She stopped hesitantly.
“I see,” Freya said thoughtfully. “Well, I’ve seen my fair share of setbacks. But you know what I’ve also seen The power of friendship to overcome them.”
As Freya shared stories of her own struggles and the lessons she had learned, Judith and Melanie found themselves nodding in understanding.
“The truth is,” Freya said, “we all make mistakes. But the real test of a friendship is how you support each other through the hard times.”

Eric, my friend, always wore a smile on his face. Unfortunately, he suffered from a rare brain disease. One day I noticed that he didn’t come to school.
Two days later, my teacher — Mrs. Carina said Eric was in hospital again. He needed to have an operation. Feeling sad, I spent the rest of the day thinking about how frightened, helpless and hopeless Eric must feel, facing such a big challenge. How sad Eric’s parents would be! I was so sorry for Eric, and I wanted to do something for him.
Another friend told me that Eric loved pandas. I remembered that my brother had recently taught me how to make a toy panda. Right then, I decided to make Eric a toy panda for luck and hope. I also made a card for Eric. I told him that he always had a place in my heart and that I hoped that he would recover quickly. The next day after school, I gave the toy panda and the card to my teacher, for she was going to visit Eric at the hospital. She was surprised and thanked me on behalf of Eric’s family.
One day, as I passed our meeting room, I saw many people sitting inside. I took a closer look and was amazed. There were almost all of my teachers, and a woman I had never seen before. Then one of the teachers came out and invited me to go in. He told me that the woman was Eric’s mom and that she was asking about me.

In a quiet home, a young girl named Emily sat at her piano, her fingers dancing across the keys with love that often left her in a world of her own. Her mother, a strict woman with high expectations, always required her to focus on her studies. Music was a luxury they couldn’t afford, she’d say.
“Emily, you need to stop this daydreaming and concentrate on your math,” her mother would demand, with a serious look on her face. Emily’s heart would sink at her mother’s words.
One day, Emily gathered the courage to play a piece she had created for her mother. Her fingers shook as she began, pouring her soul into every note.
“Mom, I want you to hear this,” Emily said in a low voice.
Her mother, buried in her work, hardly looked up. “Can it wait, dear I’m quite busy.”
Emily’s fingers froze on the keys, her heart aching with her mother’s words. She wanted to shout, to make her mother understand the importance of music in her life, but the words caught in her throat. Instead, she quietly closed the piano lid and returned to her room, her unappreciated song echoing (回响) in her mind.
That night, as Emily lay in bed, the silence was deafening, and her tears rolled down. She felt alone, with her dreams being a secret in her heart. The next morning, she awoke to the sound of her mother’s soft knock on the door.

Flora liked nothing better than to spend time with her grandfather. You see, he was always making something and she enjoyed watching, learning, and sometimes even helping him finish whatever he was doing. Now, the two decided to go on a hike in the woods tomorrow.
The next morning, Flora did not need an alarm to wake her. She was up, dressed, and ready to go as the sun rose and the day began. After a great breakfast and a long drive, Flora and her grandfather arrived at the base of a mountain and the beginning of the trail. “This is beautiful, ” Flora said. “Just where are we hiking ” “To the very top of the mountain where we will have lunch, rest, maybe take a swim, and then hike back down, ” he replied. “Swim! ” Flora said excitedly. “Is there a lake on the top of the mountain ” “Yes, ” her grandfather replied. “There is a lake surrounded by big flat rocks and it is filled with clear, cold water. ” “Wow! ” was all Flora could say.
As they hiked up the mountain, Flora asked many, many questions. “What kind of tree is that ” “How high are we ” “Are there bears around here ” “Are there any other people up here ” “What do we do if we get lost ” And of course: “Are we there yet ” Her grandfather answered all her questions the best he could and explained that they were in a very natural area. Not many people, all sorts of wildlife, even bears. He helped her understand and respect the natural beauty around them, particularly the animals. He taught her how to use a compass, and things to help them be safer while they hiked. Like whistle a song or make some noise to let the bigger animals know you are in their area. In a soft voice, her grandfather said, “The Earth is our mother. All life is sacred; treat all life with respect. Take from the Earth what is needed and nothing more. Alexis and Zoe were sitting at the kitchen table doing their homework. They had a hard time focusing on their homework because the radio station was playing music from their favourite band, the Shape Shifters.
“I can’t believe the Shifters are going to be playing here and we can’t go!”Alexis said.
“I know,”Zoe replied. “Tickets are sold out in five minutes and even if we can get some, they are so expensive! ”
“It's totally unfair,”said Alexis.“They should give the tickets to their biggest fans first!”
“You mean us, right ”Zoe said.
“Obviously,” said Alexis. “Everyone knows we're their number one fans.”
Zoe turned the radio up a bit louder. Their favourite song was on, and the girls had an impromptu (即兴的) dance party right there in the kitchen. As it ended, they sat on their chairs again. The radio host started talking about the concert.
“I have exciting news to share with all of you. We will give away two tickets to Saturday’s sold-out show and will look for the third caller who can correctly answer this question: who is the oldest member of the Shape Shifters ” the host said.
Alexis and Zoe looked at each other. They couldn’t believe how easy the question was.
“It’s Georgie!” said Alexis.
“No, it’s Natasha,”answered Zoe.
“Everyone knows Georgie is 29. He’s much older than the rest of the band, ” said Alexis.
“I know he’s the oldest person, but the question is who’s the oldest member of the band. Natasha started the band when she was just 15. The others joined the group after her,” Zoe explained.
Alexis thought for a while and later agreed with Zoe. And they decided to call the radio station to answer that question. They stood together and held their breath.
“Hello, girls, you are lucky caller Number 3!” The girls screamed excitedly. “Nobody seems to know the answer to our question. Do you ”the host continued. Zoe said,“We know the answer! ”“I hope so. If you get it right, you’ll have a chance to Saturday’s sold-out show! ”

My Life Camping Experience
Last year in October, my family and I took our first trip to the Lake Houston Wilderness Park and slept underneath the stars. As we walked through the beautiful park, the colors of the sun shined brightly on the pile of leaves. The gentle wind of the forest welcomed us with the sound of crackling (噼啪) of dried leaves. My family was altogether, which was the most important part of the trip for me.
My brothers and sisters are adults with different lives, which makes it difficult for us to plan an activity, like this one, where we can be altogether at the same time and place.
We had finished setting up the tent when it suddenly started raining. Luckily, we had positioned the tent on a high flat surface where water could not come into our tent. Even with the rain, I had never been happier. The quiet forest and big trees surrounded the tent.
While we all enjoyed the sound of the rain dripping on our tent, mom prepared some snacks and drinks for us while we played games and chatted about our daily life stories. We made wet-weather camping fun. I noticed how unique it was camping under the sound of the rain; we were gathered around in the middle of nature and it was a nice feeling, though it was a little bit cool.

Sophie trotted (慢跑) down the track, the crisp autumn breeze blew through her hair as she rode her favourite pony, Sprite, along the familiar paths. She had been sharing Sprite for nearly a year, ever since she and Hollie, his owner, had started a friendship. Hollie was a bit older than Sophie, but the two of them got on so well it never seemed to matter. Sophi e loved going to shows to help Hollie out when she was competing, holding Sprite’s reins (缰绳) while Hollie adjusted her helmet, and cheering from the sidelines. But Sophie’s favourite part of the week was her share days when she could ride, brush, and play with Sprite as if he were her own.
As Sophie got closer to the yard, she spotted a familiar figure by the gate. Hollie was there, waving. It was unusual to see Hollie at the yard on a weekday like this, and Sophie felt a small flutter of nerves. But she brushed it off. Maybe Hollie just wanted to chat or tell her about an upcoming show.
Once Sophie had cooled Sprite down and returned him to his stable (马厩), she found Hollie waiting in the tack room. The smile on Hollie’s face wasn’t as bright as usual.
“Hey, Soph, can we talk for a minute ” Hollie asked.
Sophie nodded, her heart beating a little faster. Hollie sat down on a blanket box, and Sophie followed, still holding her riding gloves in her hand. “Sophie, I’ve got some news.” Hollie began, her voice gentle. “You know I’m finishing school this year, right Well, I’ve decided to go to university. And with me being away, I won’t be able to take care of Sprite anymore.”
Sophie’s stomach dropped. “Oh,” she whispered. Hollie took a deep breath. “I’ve talked it over with my parents, and we’ve decided that the best thing to do is to sell him. I hate to do it, but it’s the right choice. I want to tell you first because I know how much you love him.”

When I was a kid, my parents brought me a four-month-old puppy (小狗). My family named the puppy Dusty. Although I wanted to lay only claim to her affections, in a family of seven kids, no one lays permanent claim to the family pet.
Dusty was our dog, not “my” dog. We soon realized that she had patience. My baby sister often transformed Dusty’s warm fur into a naptime pillow — falling asleep on the carpet. Like a protective mother, Dusty waited — without moving — until my sister woke.
Dusty doubled as a school crossing guard, too. Monday through Friday she’d walk us kids two blocks to St. Patrick’s Parochial, looking both ways to check for the traffic before allowing us to cross the street. We’d wave good-bye as we entered the door, knowing Dusty would be waiting at the school door to claim us at the close of the school day.
Of all the contributions Dusty made to our family, one incident stands out far above all others.
Late one night, Dusty rushed to my parents’ bedroom. She barked and barked. When she got no response, Dusty raced upstairs to my bedroom and my brothers’ bedroom and barked again and again. When she failed to fully wake us, she flew back down the steps and returned to my parents’ room. Finally, she got Mom’s attention.
“What are you doing, Dusty ” Mom said, still halfway in dreamland. Dusty persisted (坚持). Finally my mother gave in. “Okay, what is it ”
Dusty rushed out of Mom's room. Thinking the dog needed to be let out to relieve herself, my mother followed Dusty to the front door.

When I was six years old, an interesting thing happened. My father happened to hear about some skating classes in our local community and he seemed to strongly believe that I was going to be good at skating. So he filled out the form and got me signed up for it.
I was extremely excited because it sounded like a lot of fun to learn how to skate. But at the same time, I was also a little frightened. After all, it was something completely new to me. Fortunately, my family were always there to support me. They kept telling me that I could do it.
The first skating class was set to start at 7:00 am. I was really looking forward to it. My father and I were able to make it to the class on time. When we arrived at the skating rink (冰场), I was shocked: Even though it was the very first class, some of the students were already skating like real experts! They were gliding (滑行) around the rink so smoothly. When it was time to get the skating shoes, all the ones that fit me were already taken. The instructor had to give me a pair that didn’t fit well at all. They were too big and felt really uncomfortable on my feet.
My father and the instructor could see that I was a bit down. They kept telling me not to worry and that everyone starts from the beginning. With their encouragement, I decided to give it a try. But it was really hard. Every time I tried to skate, I would fall down. It was so embarrassing. However, the instructor was really nice. He would hold my hand and walk with me around the rink, teaching me the basic steps and how to balance.
After that first class, when I returned home, I couldn’t stop thinking about skating. I kept wondering how I could improve and become an expert like those other students.

The train station was bustling (喧闹的) as I sat on a cold metal bench, watching the chaos (混乱) unfold around me. Travelers rushed by, each with their own destinations, their own stories. Yet I sat there, still and purposeless. My suitcase rested beside me, but unlike everyone else, I had no destination. I had left my hometown, tired of the never-ending routine, but the escape I had longed for brought no relief. Instead, it left me alone, separated from a world I once believed I understood. The noise, the people, the announcements - all of it seemed distant, as though I were watching life happen from behind a glass wall.
As I stared aimlessly, a wrinkled old man walked past me, pushing an overloaded cart of junk. He paused a few feet away, scanning the area, before sitting down cross-legged on the floor near me. His clothes were muddy, and his hands looked roughened by years of hard work. I watched as he reached into his cart and pulled out a harmonica (口琴), pressing it to his lips. The first note was shaky, but soon a simple, beautiful melody (旋律) filled the air. Strangely, the chaotic station grew quieter, as though his music had worked magic.
At first, I felt confused - why here, and why now But as I watched him play, I noticed something remarkable. His face lit up, not with joy exactly, but with a deep contentment that seemed out of place in his circumstances. People started slowing down to listen. A young girl tugged at her mother's coat, wanting to stay. A businessman, hurriedly checking his phone, paused to drop a coin in the old man’s hat. It struck me how a man with so little could share so much.

“I don’t know what to be for Halloween tonight,” said Marcus to his family sitting around the table. It was lunchtime already, and Marcus had spent days trying to pick a costume. He didn’t want to be the same things his friends had chosen. So he was left empty-handed with only hours to go.
“What about a robot ” asked his sister.
“That would be hard to do now,” said Marcus. “All the best costumes are already taken.”
“What about the zombie costume from last year ” asked Dad. “It might still fit you.”
“No, they aren’t cool anymore,” answered Marcus.
“I don’t know what the problem is,” said his mother. “When I was a kid, we would just make a costume out of stuff we had around the house. You know, throw a sheet over our heads and go out as a ghost, or put on a witch’s hat and grab the broom.”
Marcus sighed. He just could not make his mind up. He reached his hand out to take a sip of juice. By accident, Marcus knocked his glass of grape juice all over the table.
“Oh, what a mess! I don’t know if this stain (污渍) will come out.” Mom cleared some of the glasses and plates away to gather up the white tablecloth. It was now marked with purple spots. She threw it into the washing machine in the laundry room (洗衣间).
“I’m sorry, Mom,” said Marcus. He knew it was a clumsy mistake.
“It’s okay, honey. Accidents happen. Finish your lunch now. It’s time to carve the pumpkin.” Marcus and his sister took the last bites of their sandwiches. Then they began the messy job of scooping out the pumpkin seeds so Dad could carve it into a Jack-o’-lantern. Marcus still had no ideas for a costume. Maybe he should just give up on trick-or-treating this year.
When the laundry was finished, Mom pulled out the tablecloth and saw the purple spots were still there. “I guess I’ll throw it away,” she said. “I wonder if I can use it for anything else.”

Benjy and I were working in the yard together one afternoon. It was during a summer between college terms, a time of uncertainty for my son. Benjy wanted to follow in my footsteps as a musician, but he was impatient for success. Talented as he was, often he took up one thing and his passion faded. I ached for him and wished I could say something.
Taking a break, Benjy looked around our 15 acres with its stream, its trees, and its rolling grass. “This place is beautiful,” he said. “How did you get it ”
I had long expected Benjy to ask about this, so I told him the story of the land.
Gloria and I were teaching in a town where I had grown up. We wanted land so we could build a house to welcome our first baby. I noticed a parcel south of town where cattle grazed (吃草). It belonged to a 92-year-old retired banker named Mr. Yule, who owned a lot of land inthe area, but was selling none of it. He gave the same speech to everyone who inquired. “I promised the farmers they could use it for their cattle.”
Nevertheless, despite being turned down so many times, Gloria and I persisted in visiting him at the bank, where he still spent his days. Then one day, after we claimed our names and intention, Mr. Yule looked up from his paper, pursed his lips and stared. “Gaither. Bill Gaither. Are you any relation to Grover Gaither ”
“Yes, sir. He was my granddad.”
Mr. Yule put down his paper and removed his glasses. Then he pointed to a couple of chairs, and we sat down.
“Grover Gaither was the best worker I ever had on my farm, patient and persistent in everything,” he said. “Showed up early, stayed late, did whatever needed doing and never had to be told.” Mr. Yule squinted, his eyes distant with the memory. “What’d you say you wanted, Gaither ”
I told him again.
“Let me do some thinking on it, then come back and see me.”

Lily and her family just moved in the countryside and were spending their first winter over at their new house. One morning, Lily sat on her wheelchair in the yard because her legs had been a bit uncomfortable recently. It was time for her to breathe some fresh air out with her mom, who pushed her wheelchair and they felt the joy of enjoying snow. As the snow gradually stopped, a shout erupted followed by a soft bark (犬吠声). Standing there was a little lady with gray hair, following a dog. She had beautiful blue eyes and got wrinkles all over her face. She was a kind neighbor nearby. Mom said, “Welcome, Mrs. Willow!”
“Thank you very much, dear,” Mrs. Willow said, shaking the snow on her shoulders off and adding she was coming here to borrow a pen.
Mom said, “OK, wait for a moment and I will find it for you. Mrs. Willow, do you want a cup of tea ”
Mrs. Willow replied with a yes. They both walked to the drawing room, leaving Lily outside by herself. Mom forgot that a big old English Shepherd dog was standing there, wandering around. Maybe it belonged to Mrs. Willow but at that time Lily was so frightened that she wanted to scream and tried to stand up.
Back in the days, when Lily was 5, she loved dogs. Her family at that time owned a German Shepherd. She called it “Bailey” and she loved him. Bailey loved her too. But one day, when she was digging some worms up happily in the garden, her brother Peter drove Bailey so mad that it chased (追赶) Peter all around. While Peter was climbing up a tree, Bailey’s teeth accidentally caught Lily’s leg. Lily cried out in pain, and from then on her legs had occasionally ached and she feared dogs more and more.
As the old English Shepherd approached with curiosity, Lily’s fear overwhelmed her, causing her to scream and accidentally knock over her wheelchair. The chair leaned and then fell, trapping Lily in the snow. The dog, sensing her distress (险情), barked for help and attempted to pull her up, but Lily was too heavy.

Sunlight flooded across the sports field, illuminating every corner with its warm and vibrant rays, and the noise was deafening. As I walked towards the track, I glanced around me at the sea of faces in the stands, but my mind was focused. The gold medal for girl’s 1km race was just minutes away, hanging in the distance.
My classmates were cheering so loudly that it seemed as if they were the only fans there. I could hear my name being called. I could hear the shouts of encouragement and the cries of hope. I had working hard towards this race for two years after recovering from an operation. For the long and hard days of training, my classmates offered support, encouragement and assistance to me, which all had led up to this championship. My coach helped me make a good plan for this race. I knew I would have to push myself beyond my known limits to ensure that I would win the gold medal.
The starting gun was fired, and the race began. My rivals (竞争对手) had set the pace from the start. It was important that I didn’t let anyone get too far in front. The first lap was good, I managed to keep up with the group, but I was feeling much more tired than I usually did and much more than I’ d anticipated. My ankle was bandaged against an injury I had incurred in the long jump just a couple of days earlier. Mental and physical tiredness were starting to crush me, but I had to fight back and tried to shut out all thoughts of pain.
Two girls ran past me. I knew I couldn’t let them get too far. At least I had to stay with them. I reminded myself, “Just get to that finish line. Keep running, head held high.” Out of nowhere, the pain from the ankle injury was starting to spread all over my body. My heart was beating loudly and my mouth was dry.

《2025届高三下学期英语二轮提升专练:书面表达》参考答案
1.Paragraph 1:
Lucy began to tremble unknowingly when she stood in the middle of the stage. She was rooted on the stage and found it hard to sing with her mind blank when Jack played the guitar smoothly. Noticing Lucy’s abnormal silence, Jack gave her an encouraging smile but it didn’t work. Jack replayed the music, hoping to help Lucy calm down and get started. To Jack’s relief, Lucy followed him this time though her singing was not as good as usual. They finished their performance regretfully, waiting for the result anxiously.
Paragraph 2:
The big moment came. Mr. Brown declared that the winner was Mary. The school hall erupted in cheer and applause. Lucy whispered to Jack guiltily, “I’m really sorry.” Jack responded with a smile, “ Never mind! I know you did your best.” Tears welling up in her eyes, Lucy felt a gentle pat on the head. Looking up, she was surprised to see Alex Pepper. “Nothing can beat a strong heart,” he noted. Hearing these words, Lucy expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Alex and renewed her determination and hope.
2.Paragraph 1: “But you yelled at him,” Lev said, confused. I was at a loss for words, realizing my son was correct. Taking a deep breath, I said, “You’re right, Lev. I did exactly what I told him not to do. I should not have raised my voice, no matter how upset I was.” Lev looked at me thoughtfully and asked, “So why didn’t you talk quietly and politely like you told him to ” I hesitated for a moment and replied softly, “Because sometimes adults don’t handle anger well, and I will try to do better next time.”Lev gave a small nod, still unsure, but he seemed to accept my explanation.
Paragraph 2: The driver stopped the car and turned around. He glanced at me briefly and then turned his head to Lev, clearly still annoyed. “I overreacted earlier,” he muttered. “Sorry, kid.” Lev looked at him, his face serious, and said, “It’s okay, but next time, talk nicely. My dad says that’s better.” The driver blinked in surprise and then nodded, starting the car again without another word. I felt a sense of relief mixed with pride. Lev had reminded both the driver and me of a gentler approach to handling conflict.

David called again three weeks later. This time he was his old self. “Dad,” he said, “you won’t believe it! I invited some friends over and we listened to the tape together — instant silence, and then a few minutes of sadness. But once we realized we were listening to the sounds of home, we felt better and connected with the people we missed, like we’d been relieved of a heavy burden. I can’t tell you how much that tape meant to me,” he continued, “Thanks, Dad! It was really a special gift.”
From then on, thunder had different meanings for Pat and me. For the next eight months, while David was in Korea, we found ourselves expecting thunderstorms. Rather than feeling depressed on gloomy days, we regarded the storms as a special gift, which seemed to tie us closer to a son so far from home. It was no longer just a sound to us but a bond, a reminder of love that stretched across the miles and brought us lose, no matter how far apart we were.

That was when noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the waitress to give me two more breakfast on a separate tray. I put the tray on the table and the blue-eyed gentleman looked up at me tearfully. I started to cry as I walked away. When I sat down, my husband smiled at me. We held hands firmly. I returned to college on the last evening of class, with this story in hand.
I turned in “my project” and the instructor read it. Then she said, “Can I share this ” I nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that was when I knew that we, as humans, should share this need to help people and to be helped. In my own way, I had touched the people at McDonald’s husband’s, my son, the instructor, and every soul that shared the classroom on the last night I spent as a college student. I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: “UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE.”
5.Ally headed out for the woods where she and Dad used to go. Overhead the sky was filled with birds busily diving to gather dried grass to place in their nests. She was searching in the woods when a ringing birdsong floated down to her. A flash of orange dashed down and rested on a nearby branch. For a moment Ally couldn’t believe her eyes, but it was true. The tiny wood warbler just sat there, looking around as if it were waiting for something. Ally blinked back tears, “Thanks, Dad,” she whispered slowly lifting her camera and taking careful aim.
Ally carefully placed the new photo she had taken into her photo album. It was a picture of the very same wood warbler that they had been searching for all these years. Her heart swelled with a mix of sadness and happiness. It was a beautiful creature, just as her father had described. She smiled, feeling a sense of peace wash over her. She knew her father would be proud of her. As she closed the album, she whispered, “Thank you, Dad, for teaching me to see the beauty in the world.”

The girls exchanged uncertain looks. Over the next few days, they worked together, choosing a piece that held deep meaning for both of them. As they practiced, old memories resurfaced, and they began to open their hearts, laughing and supporting each other just as they used to.

One morning about twenty days later, entering the classroom, I found Eric looking at me with a big smile on his seat. My heart skipped a beat with joy and relief. Eric was back, and it seemed that a part of our class was finally complete. He was thinner, but his smile was as bright as ever. We exchanged a long, tight hug, and he showed me the well-loved toy panda he had brought back with him. The class gathered around, and there was a palpable sense of happiness and unity.
