In a small coastal community in Ecuador known as La Isla, I was handing out clothes and toys to children standing in a long line in their schoolyard. They had gathered there that morning, likely wearing the only clothes they owned. They were quiet and polite, eyes bright with excitement. Watching this, my mind flashed back to a day I would never forget.
I was five years old that Christmas Eve in 1988, growing up in Ecuador, with my parents and elder sister. My father came into my bedroom and gave me a plastic cowboy. I’d never owned a real toy of any kind. My family didn’t have much. My mom stayed home, caring for my sister and me. My dad drove a food delivery truck and was on the road for days at a time.
“I hope you like your toy,” my father said, kneeling down and holding me close. I felt the warmth of his body, as if in giving me this toy he was also giving me a part of himself. Even at age five, I knew that had been a gift.
By sixth grade our family moved to the US, and life got easier. I excelled in high school. Every good grade was a thank-you to my parents for all they’d done for me. I went on to college, and after graduation, with my degree in hand, I became a pharmacist (药剂师). I was finally able to buy nice gifts for my family, but I could never give in equal measure the love I’d felt from that unexpected gift I’d received as a little boy. I wished every child could know that feeling.
Two years into my career, I made my first trip to La Isla. Two years later, I returned with my nonprofit organization called Toys for Ecuador. My parents, sister and I traveled to towns across rural Ecuador with Christmas presents for children and gift baskets for seniors.
It was a journey that not only fulfilled a childhood wish to share that special feeling of love and generosity, but also reaffirmed (重申) my commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.
24. What reminded the author of his childhood story
A. The children’s happy school life. B. The Christmas celebration.

27. What can be the best title for the text
A. Toys for Ecuador Gave Children Christmas Gifts
B. Father’s Gift Pushed a Boy to Succeed Academically

Trying to imagine fat, white sheep jumping one by one over a fence, is a well-known treatment for sleeplessness. I’ve often wondered just who came up with such a silly suggestion. If the idea is to bore you to sleep, why not count backward And who decided on sheep Why not rabbits, horses, frogs or kangaroos And does it really help you fall asleep Search online, and you’ll soon find stories about a study on battling insomnia that put the concept to the test.
“In reality, that wasn’t the point of the research,” said senior author Allison Harvey, who conducted the research. Their study wasn’t about counting sheep; it was just about using imagery to fight sleeplessness. In her research 50 people were divided into three groups. The first had no instructions on how to fall asleep, while members of the second were told to distract (分心) themselves from thoughts, worries and concerns in any way they wanted. The third group was instructed to perform an interesting and engaging imagery task, such as creating or remembering a waterfall, a holiday or a summer afternoon in the sun.
Those who used imagery reported falling asleep much faster than either of the other two groups, and they rated their thoughts, worries and concerns to be less uncomfortable and painful than people in the distraction or no instruction group.
As it happened, two of the study participants in the distraction group did count sheep as a way to fall asleep “and somehow people accepted that, I guess because they thought it was fun,” Harvey said.
While she didn’t actually study counting sheep as a way of overcoming sleeplessness and isn’t aware of any other studies to do so, Harvey does have an opinion based on her years as a sleep specialist.
“Something as ordinary as counting sheep usually does not do the trick,” she said. “As everyone is different and not one option is going to help every single time, we have worked out a menu of options with people.”

The IKEA effect, named after Swedish furniture giant, describes how people tend to value an object more if they make or assemble (组装) it themselves. More broadly, the IKEA effect tells how we tend to like things more if we’ve spent effort to create them.
It goes without saying that we like to feel like we know what we’re doing; that we are capable of handling the tasks that are given to us and of dealing with barriers as they come up. In fact, our perceived self-efficacy (功效) — that is, our beliefs about our own abilities to perform well and take control of our lives — is an important component of our overall mental health.
Research has provided good evidence that this self-efficacy can boost a role in the IKEA effect. In one experiment, researchers started out by giving participants four math problems to solve. One group got very easy problems (e.g. “How likely is it that a fair coin that is thrown once will come up heads ”), while the other received very difficult ones (e.g. “You have four coins. Three of the coins are normal, but one of them has heads on both sides. You pick a coin at random without looking. The coin you pick has heads on one side. What are the odds that if you turn the coin over, the other side will be tails ”). The goal of this part of the experiment was to control people’s sense of competence: the group that got the hard problems was likely to feel stressed out and incapable, while the easy problem group didn’t have their confidence shaken at all.
After the math problems, participants were shown a picture of a bookcase from IKEA and asked whether they would prefer to buy it pre-assembled or to build it themselves. The results showed that people who had had their sense of competence challenged were more likely to say they’d prefer to assemble the bookcase on their own. In other words, feeling like we’re incapable of something increases our desire to prove ourselves and appear competent, leading us to overstate the value of things we have made.
32. What does the IKEA effect focus on
A. How to assemble furniture from IKEA. B. How people like things they create.
C. How Swedish furniture is made. D. How to increase self-efficacy.
33. Why did the researchers give participants different math problems
A. To interpret their reactions. B. To check their intelligence.
C. To affect their sense of confidence. D. To make the experiment funnier.
34. What does the text suggest about the IKEA effect
A. It only works for the assembly of furniture.
B. It makes people undervalue everything they create.
C. It has no influence on people’s purchasing decisions.
D. It shows people’s psychological needs to feel competent.
35. How does the author support the topic of the text
A. By presenting an experiment. B. By giving some definitions.
C. By listing different opinions. D. By sharing personal experiences.

A Journey of Courage
Tom had always dreamed of climbing mountains. As a child, he would spend hours reading adventure books about explorers who scaled the tallest peaks in the world. He admired their bravery and determination, and he promised himself that one day, he would stand on top of a mountain and look out at the world below.
When Tom turned 18, he decided that it was time to make his dream a reality. He spent months training, hiking through forests and climbing smaller hills to build up his strength and stamina (耐力). He read books on mountaineering, learned how to use climbing gear (装备), and practiced tying knots. His goal was to climb Mount Peakstone, a challenging mountain known for its difficult terrain (地形) and unpredictable weather.
On the day of the climb, Tom felt both excited and nervous. He packed his gear carefully—warm clothes, food, water, and his climbing equipment. As he stood at the base of the mountain, he looked up at the towering peak. It seemed much taller in person than it did in the pictures he had seen. For a moment, doubt crept into his mind. Could he really do this
But Tom pushed the doubt aside. He had come too far to turn back now. With a deep breath, he began his ascent (攀登). The first part of the climb was relatively easy. The weather was clear, and the path was well-marked. As he climbed higher, the air grew colder, and the wind picked up, but Tom pressed on, determined to reach the top.
About halfway up the mountain, the weather took a sudden turn for the worse. Dark clouds gathered overhead, and snow began to fall heavily. The wind howled, making it difficult to see and even harder to keep his balance. Tom’s heart pounded in his chest. He knew he had to make a decision—should he continue climbing, or should he turn back
