There are competitions held all over the world that attract millions of viewers every year. Here are four of the craziest competitions in the world.
Worm(幼虫) Charming Championship
This competition involves contestants using a small area of grass and a number of different methods to try and attract as many worms as possible from the ground in a set amount of time. Participants use everything to make noise in the ground to try and drive the worms out. The current world record is held by 10-year-old Sophie Smith from England, who in 2009 collected 567 worms in 30 minutes.
Toe Wrestling Competition
The wonderful sport of toe wrestling was first thought up in a pub in Wetton, England, in 1974. Four friends were angry at the fact that the UK never produced any world champions and so created a sport that they could succeed in. The competition has gained in popularity and there is a regular world championship held in Ashbourne, England, every year. It’s very similar to arm wrestling and sees competitors lock toes and wrestle until one of them “pins” the other’s foot for 3 seconds.
Beard and Moustache Championship
The competition has been running since petitors come from all over the world to see who can grow and style the best bear d and moustache. The competition actually has 17 different categories, including Best Freestyle Moustache, Best Natural Goatee and the all-time classic: Best Natural Full Bear d and Styled Moustache.
Sauna(桑拿浴) Championship
The World Sauna Championships were held in Heinola, Finland and ran from 1999 to 2010. The crazy competition saw contestants sit in a sauna for as long as possible, with the winner being the last person standing(or rather sitting and sweating). The starting temperature was 110 degrees and water would be poured onto the stove every 30 seconds. The competition came to an end in 2010, though, when tragedy struck and one of the contestants died during the event and another was severely injured.
21. What does the text say about Worm Charming Championship
A. It has no time limit. B. It has no requirement for tools.
C. Its records are broken frequently. D. Its participants are mainly teenagers.
22. Why was Toe Wrestling Competition created
A. To raise people’s interest in sports.
B. To demonstrate the creativity of Englishmen.
C. To facilitate the UK’s winning champions.
D. To compete against arm wrestling.
23. Which competition is no longer held
A. Worm Charming Championship.
B. Toe Wrestling Competition.
C. Beard and Moustache Championship.

Xi Zhinong was born in a small town in Yunnan Province. When he was young, he moved to Kunming with his mother. Feeling like a caged bird in a big city, he was bored with the busy and noisy city life and looked forward to nature.
His chance soon came. In 1983, he helped shoot(拍摄) a documentary about birds. That experience led him to learn photography and take photos of flying birds.
In the 1980s, the Internet was not that popular in China and cameras were expensive. He managed to borrow a camera and threw himself into studying how to use it. During that time, the library became his favorite place where he first read some magazines about nature. It opened a door for him to connect with nature.
In 1992, a research program was organized to protect a type of unusual monkeys living only in China. Usually, the home of these monkeys has half-a-year-long winters. It created great challenges for Xi Zhinong’s work, but he never drew back. “I didn’t see the monkeys in the wild until I went into the mountains the third time,” said Xi Zhinong. He went into the snow mountains six times just to get valuable photographs of the monkeys.
Several years later, his works won international prizes. People around the world began to pay attention to the protection of wild animals in China. And he is the first Chinese winner of the world-famous Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
In order to call on tons of people to protect wildlife with cameras, he started “China Wildlife Photography Training Camp”. He hopes that more young people will join in for the nature protection.

Obesity(肥胖) is often considered a key factor in the likelihood of early death, but a new review reveals that cardiorespiratory(心肺) fitness actually has more of an influence on mortality(死亡) risk and long-term health. In other words, being fit matters more than being thin when it comes to living longer and staying healthy for longer. The findings could be a reason to change public health strategies and treatments.
“As a society, we tend to link body weight or fatness with health status,” says kinesiologist Nathan Weeldryer, from the University of Virginia. “Our study, with the largest and most globally representative sample to date, aims to shift views on the relationship between fitness and body fat.”
Researchers from the US and UK analyzed 20 studies from 1980—2023, with 398,716 participants. The data covered BMI, cardiorespiratory fitness, and mortality risk. The team found that the risk of an early death for individuals with obesity who were fit was similar to that of people classed as fit and of normal weight. What’s more, having obesity and being fit meant a longer life on average than having a normal weight and being unfit. While the data didn’t show fitness as being the only factor involved, it highlighted just how important it is in our overall health.
“Fitness is far more important than fatness for mortality risk,” says exercise physiologist Siddhartha Angadi, from the University of Virginia. “Exercise is more than just a way to expend calories. It can largely reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death.” The researchers aren’t dismissing the health burden of obesity: around 1 in 8 are obese globally and the numbers are rising. It raises the risk of high blood pressure, cancers, and other diseases.
However, the relationship between obesity and the risk of an early death isn’t clear-cut. The research team advocates more emphasis on exercise and less on weight loss. “Repetitive cycles of losing and gaining weight — yo-yo dieting — are associated with numerous health risks,” says exercise physiologist Glenn Gaesser, from Arizona State University. “Improving cardiorespiratory fitness may help avoid bad health effects.”
28. Why did researchers conduct the research
A. To deny obesity’s link to early death.
B. To discover the best weight-loss ways.
C. To update views on the weight-fitness connection.
D. To stress large samples’ importance in research.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Supporting evidence for the research results.
B. Potential application of the research findings.
C. A further explanation of the research methods.
D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.
30. What does exercise physiologist Siddhartha Angadi suggest
A. Making use of the findings.
B. Interviewing the study participants.
C. Conducting further research.
D. Clarifying the purpose of the study.
31. What will the follow-up study focus on
A. Obesity and disease. B. Weight-loss impact.
C. Yo-yo dieting risks. D. Fitness benefits.

Across the flat plateau of AlUla in Saudi Arabia, shades of gray-brown soil are dotted with areas of dark rock — and a clearly defined circle of stones. Unmistakably constructed by humans, this structure, called “standing stone circles” by archaeologists, was built around 7, 500 years ago by a people we barely know for a purpose we have long misunderstood.
In 2019, archaeologists from the University of Western Australia began excavating (发掘) these standing stone circles. Their initial idea was that these were structures built by Neolithic nomads(新石器时代的游牧民) for some long-forgotten religious practices. However, excavating at multiple sites, they found what turned out to be archaeological pay dirt — domestic rubbish. The remains of discarded animal bones, household tools, and even jewelry, have reclassified the standing stone circles as Neolithic homes.
Standing stone circles seem to have sprung up around 5,800 to 5,500 B.C. This coincided with a warmer climate in the region that brought more regular rainfall and a landscape of rich grasses and trees, good conditions for raising cattle and goats. But these were also good conditions for building permanent structures. More abundant vegetation meant less pressure to keep moving the animals to fresh grasslands, which made building homes more worthwhile. This, and the plateau’s abundance of stones, may have encouraged the nomads to stay a while and build.
Excavations of these settlements are revealing something of this people’s way of life. They kept cattle and goats for meat, but continued to hunt and gather to expand their diet with hare, fruits and nuts. The many grinding(磨碎) stones found on the sites suggest inhabitants were regularly grinding grains, but these were likely to be gathered rather than farmed. The plateau sites have also revealed tools made with materials from the sandstone valleys and jewelry shaped from shells from the Red Sea — these Neolithic people had a complex culture involving travel and probably exchange.
The revelation overturns many of our assumptions about Neolithic AlUla. Here was a people more settled and more civilized than history has given them credit for. Their story is just beginning to be revealed, but already a very different picture of early AIUla is emerging.
32. What did the 2019 excavation finally identify the “standing stone circles” as
A. Religious sites. B. Rubbish stations.
C. Domestic buildings. D. Natural wonders.
33. What was a contributing factor in the building of the standing stone circles
A. The worsening climate. B. The richness of plants.
C. The desire to raise more animals. D. The need to store goods.
34. What is most likely TRUE about Neolithic people’s way of life in AlUla
A. They planted crops and kept cattle and goats.
B. They relied entirely on hunting and gathering for food.
C. They had interactions with other groups.
D. They made tools and jewelry purely from local materials.
35. What is the purpose of the text
A. To provide some new insights. B. To introduce an ancient population.
C. To promote a historical site. D. To argue for some long-held beliefs.
One of the primary goals of cognitive behavioral therapy(疗法) is finding effective ways to channel your anxiety into productive action. The best possible one is under the care of an experienced mental health care provider. Still, if you are hoping to stop being paralyzed(麻痹) by anxiety and use this energy to fuel and improve your life, you can. 36
Set a goal. Goal-setting is one way to use your anxiety as fuel. Take notice of your anxious thoughts and worries. What are you most concerned about 37 Instead of shaking in your boots, get down to developing a plan that allows you to overcome these fears.
Challenge yourself regularly to build resilience. Think of your resilience to anxiety as a muscle. 38 Rather than avoiding those situations that cause anxiety, gradually expose yourself to them more often. When you do this, you will find that, over time, they lose their power. For instance, if you hate public speaking, you might benefit from signing up for a local Toastmasters club. Doing so will allow you to practice speaking in front of a group more often, which will reduce your anxiety.
39 Anxiety can feel like a live wire in your body. You can’t sit still or focus. Exercise is a great activity to make use of this spare energy. Exercise offers a host of benefits like fighting off illness and helping you manage weight. One of the benefits most helpful to you, however, is its ability to neutralize anxiety and improve your mood.
Perform reality testing. You don’t have to become a slave to your anxious thoughts, giving them permission to get you all worked up. 40 Reality testing involves assessing a situation for errors in thinking. To assess the reality of this situation, you want to ask what evidence is there that says this is true. Did your friends actually call you lame Are they avoiding you
A. What are your biggest fears
B. Put them to the test instead.
C. Burn off nervous energy with physical activity.
D. How can you deal with getting fired if it does happen
E. The more you use the muscle, the stronger it becomes.
F. Just transform anxiety into action by using positive strategies.
G. When you find yourself becoming anxious, check your thought patterns.

I met Sam on a rainy, windy and chaotic morning in August. I had planned to take a train to Boston and then catch a coach to Harvard University for an important academic conference. Due to a track accident, my train was delayed by two hours. I arrived at the train station in Boston just 25 minutes before the departure of the last coach that could take me to the university on time. The moment I got off the train, I rushed like mad through the station building and jumped into the first car in the taxi queue(队列) without hesitation.
That was when I met Sam. I told him where I was going, but he said he wasn’t familiar with the nearest coach station to Harvard. I thought my explanation was not clear enough, so I provided more detailed information, including the names of nearby landmarks, but he still looked puzzled. When I was about to lose hope, Sam took out his smartphone and searched online. After a long and intense search that seemed like forever, Sam finally found the right route and started the car.
Finally, with just three minutes to spare we pulled into the coach station. Thankfully, there was a long line still waiting to board the coach. Sam parked the car nearby, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. “We made it,” he said.
Just then I realized that my wallet was left at home. I gave him an embarrassed and panicked look as I searched through my bag in vain. I had no cash and the mobile payment app on my phone was malfunctioning. A sense of hopelessness overwhelmed me as I saw the coach queue moving forward quickly.
At this moment, Sam pointed to a small convenience store beside the station, suggesting I could ask for help there. I rushed in, only to be told that they couldn’t offer any cash or bank card-related assistance.

根据文中对Worm(幼虫)Charming Championship 的介绍中的“Participants use everything to make noise in the ground to try and drive the worms out.”
根据文中对 Toe Wrestling Competition的介绍中的“Four friends were angry at the fact that the UK never produced any world champions and so created a sport that they could succeed in.”
根据文中对 Sauna(桑拿浴)Championship 的介绍中的“The World Sauna Championships were held in Heinola, Finland and ran from 1999 to 2010.”和“The competition came to an end in 2010, though, when tragedy struck and one of the contestants died during the event and another was severely injured.”
根据第一段中的“Feeling like a caged bird in a big city, he was bored with the busy and noisy city life and looked forward to nature.(他觉得自己就像大城市里的一只笼中鸟,厌倦了繁忙嘈杂的城市生活,向往着大自然。)”
25. A。 根据第二段中的“In 1983, he helped shoot(拍摄) a documentary about birds. (1983年,他帮助拍摄了一部关于鸟类的纪录片。)”、第四段中的“In 1992, a research program was organized to protect a type of unusual monkeys living only in China.(1992年,组织了一项研究计划来保护一种只生活在中国的特殊猴子。)”和“He went into the snow mountains six times just to get valuable photographs of the monkeys.(他去雪山六次,只是为了拍到猴子的珍贵照片。)”、第五段中的“Several years later, his works won international prizes.(几年后,他的作品获得了国际奖项。)”以及最后一段中的“In order to call up tons of people to protect wildlife with cameras, he started ‘China Wildlife Photography Training Camp’.(为了号召成千上万的人用相机保护野生动物,他创办了’中国野生动物摄影训练营’。)”
根据“It created great challenges for XiZhinong’s work”可知,这项工作非常有挑战性。再根据下一句中的“I didn’t see the monkeys in the wild until I went into the mountains the third time(直到第三次进山,我才在野外看到猴子)”可推知,这项具有挑战性的工作没有让他退缩,他坚持进山找猴子。
通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“He hopes that more young people will join in for the nature protection.(他希望有更多的年轻人加入自然保护的行列中。)”
运动学家内森·韦尔德赖尔(Nathan Weeldryer)说“Our study… aims to shift views on the relationship between fitness and body fat.”,意思是“我们的研究旨在改变人们对健康和体脂之间关系的看法”。“shift views”等同于“update views”,也就是更新人们对健身和体脂关系的看法。选项A错误,因为原文第一段表明研究并没有否认肥胖与过早死亡的联系,只是指出心肺功能对死亡风险的影响更大;选项B错误,研究重点并非寻找最佳减肥方法,而是探讨健身、体脂和死亡风险之间的关系;选项D错误,虽然研究采用了大样本,但这不是研究的目的。
30. A。运动生理学家悉达多·安加迪(Siddhartha Angadi)在第四段中提到“Fitness is far more important than fatness for mortality risk(就死亡风险而言,健康远比肥胖重要)”以及“Exercise is more than just a way to expend calories. It can largely reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause death.(运动不仅仅是消耗卡路里的一种方式。
32. C。从第二段中的“The remains of discarded animal bones, household tools, and even jewelry, have reclassified the standing stone circles as Neolithic homes.”
33. B。从第三段中的“More abundant vegetation meant less pressure to keep moving the animals to fresh grasslands, which made building homes more worthwhile.”
34. C。从第四段“… these Neolithic people had a complex culture involving travel and probably exchange.”
36. F。根据第一段第一句话“One of the primary goals of cognitive behavioral therapy(疗法) is finding effective ways to channel your anxiety into productive action.(认知行为疗法治疗焦虑的主要目标之一是找到有效的方法将焦虑转化为有成效的行动。)”
37. A。根据上文“Take notice of your anxious thoughts and worries. What are you most concerned about ”可推测,本空应是对 worries的提问。
38. E。根据上文“Think of your resilience to anxiety as a muscle.”
根据下文中的“Exercise is a great activity to make use of this spare energy. Exercise offers a host of benefits like … is its ability to neutralize anxiety and improve your mood.”
根据上文“You don’t have to become a slave to your anxious thoughts…”及下文“Reality testing involves assessing a situation for error s in thinking.”
42. A。 其他选项:“roof(车顶)”、“door(车门)”和“engine(引擎)”都不符合存放磁带的位置这一逻辑。
43. C。 其他选项:“broken(坏了)”和“repaired(修好了)”与被偷无关;“found(找到了)”与语境完全相反。
44. B。 其他选项:“ashamed(羞愧)”和“embarrassed(尴尬)”不符合语境;“amused(觉得好笑)”与孩子们的反应不符,且与下文作者独自觉得好笑形成对比。
45. A。 其他选项:“gave up(放弃)”、“ended up(最终)”和“carried on(继续)”不符合语境。
46. B。作者“imagined(想象)”小偷打开盒子的情景,而不是“remembered(记得)”或“noticed(注意到)”。
47. C。空后提到“recorded songs the kids and I liked from the radio”,说明那些磁带是自制的,因此“homemade(自制的)”是正确选项。其他选项:“odd(奇怪的)”、“borrowed(借来的)”和“rented(租来的)”都不符合语境。
48. B。“Picturing(想象)”与上文46空“imagined”呼应, 表示作者在脑海中描绘小偷失望的表情。其他选项:“Keeping (保持)”和“Ignoring(忽视)”不符合语境;“Forgetting(忘记)”与语境完全相反。
49. B。 其他选项:“exchanged(交换)”和“discussed(讨论)”虽然也有交流的意思,但不如“shared”准确;“hid(隐藏)”与语境完全相反。
50. C。 其他选项:“belongings(财物)”和“items(物品)”过于普通;“gifts(礼物)”不符合语境。
51. B。 其他选项:“contain(包含)”、“increase (增加)”和“channel(引导)”都不符合语境。
52. B。 其他选项:“love(爱)”、“joy(快乐)”和“worry(担忧)”都不符合语境。
53. A。作者通过宽容放下了对丢失磁带的“attachment(依恋)”。其他选项:“access(通道,进入,使用权)”、“addition (增加,添加)”和“alternative(可供选择的事物)”都不符合对磁带情感的描述,所以A选项正确。
54. B。“Forgiving the thief was a small act(原谅小偷是一个小小的举动)”符合语境。其他选项:“duty(责任)”、“promise(承诺)”和“trick(诡计)”都不符合语境。
55. C。“faith calls on us to engage in something big”表示信念要求我们投身于大的事情中,即使在做小事的时候。“compete in”是“参加竞争或者竞赛”;“specialize in”是“专门从事,专攻”;“engage in”是“从事,参加”;“succeed in”表示“成功做某事”。
56. gently。
57. original。
58. featuring。
59. an。 故填an。
60. fell。
61. played。
62. and。 took along her guzheng 和 began her street performances 为并列关系,需用连词and连接。故填and。
63. to spread。 故填to spread。
64. which。 故填which。
65. to。 故填to。

I ran back to Sam and told him the bad news. “I left my wallet at home and I have no way to pay you right now,” I stammered, my voice shaking. Sam looked at me in disbelief for a second, but then his expression softened. Without hesitation, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a few bills, and handed them to me. “Here, this should cover your coach fare. Don’t worry about it. You can pay me later,” he said kindly. He then took out a piece of paper and wrote down his phone number. “Call me when you get the chance,” he added. Overwhelmed with gratitude, I thanked him from the bottom of my heart. “I will definitely pay you back. You saved my day and this conference means a lot to me,” I said, and then rushed towards the coach entrance, just managing to get in before the coach departed.
One day later, when I was back in Boston, I called Sam as promised. He answered the phone cheerfully and later he picked me up at the coach station where he had dropped me off the day before. We chatted happily on the way to the train station in Boston. I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the train station, I paid him for the “double car ride”, including the money for the coach fare he lent me, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had picked up during the conference, which he accepted with delight. Our brief encounter had blossomed into a lasting friendship, and we vowed to stay in touch. I felt truly fortunate to have such a warm-hearted friend like Sam.

Text 1
M: Lucy, there’s a concert tonight. Do you want to go
W: I’m not sure. I’m a bit tired. I might just stay at home.
M: Oh, come on. It’ll be fun.
W: Well, I might not take that into account.
Text 2
W: Good morning. How can I help you
M: I’d like to rent an electric car for a day. What’s the price
W: It’s 80 dollars per day for our regular electric cars. But if you want a larger one, it’ll be 100 dollars.
M: I think the regular one will be fine.
Text 3
M: Have you heard about the new recycling policy
W: Yeah, I have. I think it’s a great idea. It’s really going to make a difference in reducing waste and protecting the environment.
M: I agree. It seems quite functional.
Text 4
W: Did you attend the online meeting about climate change yesterday
M: I missed it. I had an emergency at work and couldn’t get away.
W: That’s too bad. It was really informative.
Text 5
M: I read an article about a new type of solar panel. It’s much more efficient than the old ones.
W: Oh, really That sounds great. Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, are sustainable and help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, making them a crucial solution for tackling climate change.
M: I agree. There’s a project on wind power going on near my house.
Text 6
M: Have you heard about the new AI technology that can translate languages in real time
W: Yeah, I saw it on the Internet. It’s amazing how far AI has come.
M: I know. It’s going to change the way we communicate.
W: But some people are worried that it will cause job losses for translators.
M: I don’t think so. I believe it will create new opportunities. People will need to learn how to use and manage this technology.
W: That’s a good point.
Text 7
M: What do you like to do in your free time
W: I’m really into photography. I love capturing the beauty of nature and landscapes. It’s not just about taking pictures; it’s about telling a story through images.
M: That sounds fascinating. Do you have any favorite spots for photography
W: Definitely. I usually go to the park near my house. The scenery there is breathtaking, and there are always new angles and subjects to explore. I go there every weekend to take pictures. Plus, the light is perfect during the golden hour.
M: The golden hour, huh I’ve heard about that. It must make your photos look amazing.
W: Absolutely. And I also enjoy the challenge of capturing the perfect moment. It’s not easy, but it’s so rewarding when you get that one perfect shot.
M: That’s great. I should try that sometime. Maybe I’ll finally understand what all the excitement is about with photography.
Text 8
M: We’re talking to businesswoman Lily, who’s made some changes to the way she lives her life. Lily, the first thing you did was to change the way you worked. Why
W: My job was interesting, so I never got stressed or needed time off like some of my colleagues, who became ill. I travelled all over the world. Then, suddenly I realized I was living in hotels and I thought “You know what I’d like to spend more time in my own house!”
M: Do you do more exercise now
W: I spend about the same amount of time exercising as I did before. However, instead of doing it between work and dinner, I get up at 5 am and exercise then.
M: Do you spend more time with family now
W: Yes, particularly my sisters. We used to go to the cinema every week. That isn’t always possible now, so we have film nights at my house instead. There’s an outdoor pool in town and you can swim and watch films there — we’re going to try that soon.
M: Do you have any time-saving advice
W: There are things people do like checking emails or messages on the bus to work or school and making a list of things to do the next day. But the thing that works well for me is having lots of clothes which are the same, so you don’t have to think about what to put on in the morning!
Text 9
W: Hey, James, walking your dog again, right
M: Yes, my dog and I like to hang out in this park. It has a big area of grass and a beautiful pond.
W: I can’t agree more. What type is your dog He is so handsome.
M: He is a Samoyed. He is three years old and weighs about 35 pounds.
W: Wow, his coat is impressive. Such a big, beautiful boy. What’s his name
M: Zack. He is a lovely dog and a highly energetic type. He needs a lot of exercise, so I have to walk him twice a day.
W: He is so big. Is he dangerous
M: Not at all. In fact, he is cute, but he can be headstrong sometimes.
W: That’s nice. I’ve always wanted to raise a Chihuahua. They are said to be small and smart.
M: But I heard that they could be dangerous, so they may not be the best choice for families with small kids.
W: Really I didn’t know Chihuahuas could cause such problems. Maybe I should try a golden retriever.
M: Yeah, that might be better. Feel free to ask me if you need any help.
Text 10
M: Recently, Disney has provided a series of videos for children. The videos show children how artists, designers and engineers work together to create Disneyland, letting them discover how the favorite attractions are made and how Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Elsa and Anna from Frozen and Snow White are created. The videos are made by the Walt Disney Imagineering, whose job is making attractions by using creative methods. “When I was a child, I would visit Disneyland with my family and ask, ‘How do they do that ’” Tom Wilson, one of leaders at Imagineering said. “I watched its behind-the-scenes TV series and realized that kind of job was really cool. I studied design in college, which finally led to my present job.” The program has some topics. The first is creating worlds. It shows how the park is made from creating the scenery to the sounds and smells throughout. The next is about designing attractions. You have to consider everything during the process. The last is bringing characters that live in Disneyland to life. Each member of Disneyland needs to be carefully chosen.
