Touchscreens are going hands-free with a new device that allows users to control smartphones using only their tongues.

The MouthPad is clear around the teeth, and its center features a golden touchpad, which serves as the contact point for the tongue. Inside, there is a force sensor that detects left and right clicks, or it can be mapped to other hotkey functions. On the side, a small bump houses the Bluetooth and wireless charging battery, which sticks out and rests against the cheek. However, Augmental doesn’t recommend leaving it in while eating, although it is safe to drink with it in. Halliwill mentioned that he wears it in the office while drinking water or his morning coffee.
The company aims to expand the technology in the near future, offering new possibilities for users. Potential additions include voice control and wheelchair integration. The current battery lasts about five hours, but Augmental hopes to extend it to eight hours in the next version.

For humans, traveling to nearby stars like Proxima Centauri — 4.24 light-years away — could take decades, even at speeds near the speed of light. This makes hibernation a potential solution for long-duration space missions. Recently, a team of German researchers, led by Gerald Kerth at the University of Greifswald, focused their attention on bats to gain a deeper understanding of hibernation and, to some extent, shed light on potential applications for space travel.
Kerth and his colleagues studied the role of red blood cells during hibernation. They conducted an analysis of red blood cells taken from both hibernating and non-hibernating bats, as well as human blood samples. Understanding how these blood cells function during hibernation is important because hibernating animals still need to transport oxygen to their tissues, even when their body temperature drops significantly.
The team discovered that red blood cells change shape in response to changes in pressure and blood vessel (血管) size. This prompted them to investigate whether extreme conditions during hibernation could stimulate changes in red blood cells. They found that when the internal temperature of the hibernating species decreased from 37.2℃ to about 22.8℃, the structure of red blood cells in all the species examined underwent significant changes. These cells became less flexible and more rigid, indicating physiological (生理的) adaptations designed to conserve energy in cold conditions.
The study also revealed a key difference: when the temperature was lowered further to 10℃, the bat cells continued to undergo changes, while human blood cells stalled out, hardly making any further progress. This suggests that bat blood cells are more adaptable to extreme cold — a feature that could inform future medical practices.
While applying hibernation to space travel is still a long-term goal, the research findings could lead to significant advancements in medicine. Scientists believe that understanding how to control the mechanical properties (特性) of red blood cells could enhance the circulation of medications and improve treatments.

The two exchanged a silent and respectful nod. The crowd’s cheers continued to echo, and Jack knew this victory was a demonstration of perseverance and unyielding determination.
