C&D 1
(24-25高三上·湖南长沙·阶段练习)Selling a British institution to a foreign billionaire is a big deal. In the case of Royal Mail, that deal is not yet done, but the company’s board has agreed to the move in principle. The 508-year-old postal service, Royal Mail, has been valued at 5 billion by its potential Czech buyer, Daniel Kretinsky, and shareholders of Royal Mail’s parent company are due to vote on the deal in September 2024.
The government has since made a promise to “firmly scrutinize” the takeover and give workers a “stronger voice”, leading some investors to doubt whether the deal will now go through.
But there are good reasons for viewing this kind of foreign direct investment as valuable to the struggling UK economy. There is research which shows that foreign-owned firms are typically more productive, more innovative and pay higher wages than their domestically- owned competitors.
There are other possible advantages too. Research also suggests that attracting foreign investment can help regional development in the UK, making a significant contribution to what has become known as “levelling up”.
But it doesn’t always work out that way. One major concern is that when business strategy decisions are made remotely, they tend to emphasise short-term gains over long-term sustainability. And apart from the issue over whether the UK’s national post carrier should be in private hands at all, there remain questions about what specific benefits foreign property would bring to Royal Mail.
A takeover of this type often leads to “restructuring”. Daniel Kretinsky has promised no changes to working conditions for two years, and to keep the Royal Mail’s tax residency (纳税身份) in UK for five years.
A successful takeover also depends on the ability of the company to generate productivity growth, usually through things like investment of capital or new technology. But it is not clear that either of them is likely in this case.
1.What does the underlined word “scrutinize” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Examine. B.Detect. C.Overlook. D.Display.
2.Why is external direct investment precious to the UK’s hard economy
A.Foreign-owned firms are more efficient and creative.
B.Foreign-owned firms can boost global competitiveness.
C.Foreign-owned firms provide more regional jobs than the local firms.
D.Foreign-owned firms bring advanced technologies and practices to the UK.
3.Which one is the current concern about Royal Mail
A.Job cuts and wage changes. B.Ownership of the national post office.
C.Unpredictable international expansion. D.A decrease in service quality for customers.
4.What can be inferred from paragraph 6
A.Royal Mall will not pay taxes within five years.
B.Royal Mall will relocate its headquarters abroad.
C.Royal Mall’s tax status could be reassessed in five years.
D.There will be no foreign influence on Royal Mall’s operations.

(24-25高三上·甘肃·阶段练习)Hawkins, born on Feb.10, 1916, in Wisconsin, is a lifelong athlete. Hawkins showed interest in cycling for much of her life before losing interest due to a lack of competition. “There wasn’t anyone left my age to compete with,” she told the NSGA in 2021.
Hawkins became a darling of the track and field world when she took up running at 100 years old. According to media reports, she started running at the urging of her children. It wasn’t long before she established her dominance in the sport, setting the 100-meter record in the 100-104 age category in 2017 with a swift finish of 39.62 seconds.
She set several other records in her age level and charmed crowds with her frankness. The great-grandmother got the name “Hurricane” on the track for her extraordinary racing capacity, but her other nickname, “The Flower Lady”, came from her love of gardening. During her races, she could be seen with her signature flower put behind her ear as she breezed across the track.
In 2021, at the age of 105, Hawkins became the first female track and field athlete in the 105+ age level to clock a time in the 100-meter dash. With a finishing time of 1’02"95, she expressed disappointment that she hadn’t performed as well as she had hoped. “It was wonderful to see so many family members and friends. But I wanted to do it in less than a minute,” she said after the race. When someone in the crowd asked whether it made her feel any better to realize that her time was still less than her age, she said, “No.”

(24-25高三上·安徽蚌埠·阶段练习)Many teenagers like to battle it out in the world of video games, but 15-year-old Ming Letian buries himself in the world of numbers: sudoku (数独). From November 6 to 7, the 13th World Sudoku Cham- pionship (WSC), attracting 248 contestants from 33 countries and regions, was held in Prague, capital of the Czech Republic. The Chinese under-18 sudoku team swept the individual medals and won the team silver. As a member of the national team, Ming, the Senior 1 student from Dalian No 24 High School, Liaoning province, took the top position.
Like most people, Ming fell in love with sudoku after he first encounter the simple yet challenging game in a newspaper when he was just 6 years old. With pencil in hand, he quickly filled in a grid (方格) of 9×9 boxes so that every row, column and square contained the numbers 1 through 9 without repetition. From 2015 he learned strategies and visualization techniques from teachers; then he took to the field.
“The joy of the game is discovering new ways to solve a problem,” said Ming. “When I filled in the last squares, after an hour of thinking, I had a sense of achievement.” Solving a puzzle on a couch, however, is very different from filling in grids at the World Championship. In competition, players need to complete a variety of sudoku puzzles of different sizes, shapes and skill levels — easy, medium and hard. Every puzzle is timed, which means that players have to finish them quickly and correctly.
Although we’re not all geniuses, millions of people are still addicted to this game. “Sudoku relies on logic, not knowledge. You don’t have to know anything, basically, to do it. So why not sharpen your reasoning and give it a shot ” wrote Will Shortz, crossword editor for a newspaper.
9.What was Ming Letian’s achievement at the WSC
A.He won the team gold. B.He came in second place.
C.He won the bronze medal. D.He ranked first individually.
10.How did Ming Letian become interested in sudoku
A.He was inspired by many other role models. B.He saw the game via media at a young age.
C.He was satisfied with solving the puzzles. D.He learned about it from his math teacher.
11.What might be one of the challenges faced by players at the WSC
A.Speed and accuracy are needed for each puzzle. B.Every puzzle examines higher-order thinking.
C.Pencils are not allowed to fill in the squares. D.They have to stand up long to finish the game.
12.What can be inferred from Will Shortz’s words
A.Sudoku is mainly genius-focused. B.Sudoku is just knowledge-based.
C.Sudoku is beneficial to logical reasoning. D.Sudoku is the basis of mental growth.

(24-25高三上·山西·阶段练习)Many children are natural born artists. It is hard to spot the youngest artist on Earth; however, Guinness World Records has found him. Ghanian kid Ace-Liam Ankrah, who was 2 years old in July, has been named “World’ s Youngest Male Artist” after fulfilling specific requirements needed to qualify.
Ace-Liam created his first painting at just 6 months old, titled The Crawl. His mother, artist Kuukua Eghan, needed to keep him entertained while she worked on her own projects. “I spread out a canvas (画布) on the floor and added paint to it, and then in the process of crawling he ended up spreading all the colors on the canvas,” she said. After that, motivated by his mother, he continued to paint.
The boy has created his lively, expressive works using acrylic (丙烯酸的) paint. After selecting the canvas size and paint colors, his mother lets his imagination run wild. “His abstract paintings are inspired by the world around him: colors, shapes and his mood,” says Eghan. “Every painting is an expression of his curiosity and joy in discovering new things.”
Eghan decided to apply for the record last June. In November 2023, Guinness World Records told her that to break a previous record, her son needed to exhibit his work and sell paintings. She then arranged for Ace-Liam’s first exhibition at the Museum of Science and Technology in Accra in January 2024, where nine out of 10 of his pieces listed were sold. Ghana’s first lady, Rebecca Akufo- Addo, attended the exhibition and even asked him to create a piece for her.
So far, Ace-Liam has sold 15 paintings during his brief career. There are plans to hold an auction (拍卖) soon for his new paintings, in addition to looking for new opportunities for her son, such as applying for scholarships. Overall, she hopes to inspire other parents to discover their children’s talents — and she’s happy to see how far her kid can go. “He is painting and growing and playing in the whole process,” she says.
13.What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A.How valuable Ace-Liam’s first painting is.
B.What materials were used in Ace-Liam’s painting.
C.How Eghan discovered her son’s talent for painting.
D.Why Ace-Liam became the World’s Youngest Male Artist.
14.What inspires Ace-Liam’s paintings according to Eghan
A.The works of other artists. B.Stories told by his family.
C.Familiar colors and shapes. D.His curiosity to the surroundings.
15.Why did Eghan organize an exhibition in Accra
A.To encourage her son to paint more pieces.
B.To draw the first lady’s attention to her son.
C.To assist her son to qualify for the Guinness Records.

16.What does Eghan want to convey in the last paragraph
A.It’s never too late to start exploring talents.
B.Parents should support kids to express their talent.
C.Parents should believe all children are natural born artists.
D.It’s essential to create a relaxed environment for children.

(24-25高三上·云南普洱·阶段练习)Visitors to Paris can send a flavor of France home with their picture postcards and letters. The scent is sweet and comes from a special stamp, which shows the country’s famous bread called baguette.
One story explains the history of the bread. It goes that Napoleon Bonaparte’s bakers created the bread in a long shape to make it easier for his troops to carry. Though eating baguettes is not as popular as it once was, France still makes around 16 million per day or nearly 6 billion a year because it is typical of French food.
The stamp was released in May for the Summer Olympic Games. The unusual stamp was designed to make visitors think of the Summer Olympic Games and France. A worker in the post office, Clarisse Briend, said many visitors would pick up the stamps along with other official Paris 2024 postcards and stamps. Clarisse Briend said, “You can smell the bread, the baguette.” However, a bread shop manager Jeanne Barrere compared the scent to vanilla (香草). Baker Yasin Robin expressed his opinion that it smelt like a pie, a dessert but not the baguette itself.
The stamp sold for more than $2 at post offices and achieved what France had expected. Visitors, who picked up some unusual stamps, showed their appreciation. Pia Schndienst is a German visitor coming from the Netherlands with her family. “You just have to rub the stamp here like this with your nails. The sweet smell is impressive and comfortable,” she said.
In the opinion of Frenchmen, over the period of Olympic Games, the stamps boosted the influence of France. They were proud that the stamps contributed to a great period, a great party for everyone.
17.Why were the unusual stamps created
A.To show bakers’ skills. B.To promote baguettes.
C.To advertise French food. D.To remind people of France.
18.What can we learn from what Pia Schndienst said
A.The stamps marked French food. B.The stamps gained her appreciation.
C.She was sensitive to the sweet stamps. D.She was content with the Olympic Games.

A.Speed and accuracy are needed for each puzzle. B.Every puzzle examines higher-order thinking.
C.Pencils are not allowed to fill in the squares. D.They have to stand up long to finish the game.
12.What can be inferred from Will Shortz’s words

There are plans to hold an auction (拍卖) soon for his new paintings, in addition to looking for new opportunities for her son, such as applying for scholarships.
