Passage 3
Coffee is an important part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago, I have drunk a lot of it!
Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK but coffee culture in Italy is a completely different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a café or bar (酒吧), you are served with a tiny, bitter espresso. This is “normal (正常的) coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the huge coffees that we drink in the UK. If you want more than one sip (小口) of coffee in Italy, lungo is a good choice. It is espresso with a little more water added, but still served in a small cup. In addition, while takeaway coffee is quite popular among Brits, it is not very common at all in Italy, especially in non-touristy areas. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day.
Usually, breakfast in a bar in Italy includes a coffee and a pastry I have been spoiled for choice with lovely cafés in the Italian town I’m living in. These cafés sell different kinds of mouth-watering pastries — either plain (无馅料的) or filled with cream, chocolate, etc — as well as delicious coffee. Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a creamy cappuccino and a pastry with chocolate is the perfect way to start the day.
Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK. Normally, an espresso or a macchiato (an espresso with a drop of milk) costs around a euro and a cappuccino about ?1.50! They are small, of course, but this means that in Italy it is possible to go out for coffee every day without breaking the bank.
1. How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed
A.By time. B.By space.
C.By example. D.By comparison.
2. Which coffee will you get in Italy if you order one without special instructions
A.Espresso. B.Lungo.
C.Cappuccino. D.Macchiato.
3. What can we learn about the coffee culture in Italy
A.Takeaway coffee is very popular among Italians.
B.Italians are very often seen drinking huge coffees.
C.Italians like to take short breaks from work for coffee.
D.Coffees are often served along with pastries during breakfasts.
Passage 4
(23-24高一下·安徽·阶段练习)Known as kung fu in the West, Chinese martial arts come in many forms. From aunties in the park to Shaolin monks (和尚), everyone is, in fact, practicing kung fu.
Tai chi
Tai chi, or Taijiquan as it is more commonly known, is perhaps more connected with aunties in the park than with powerful martial artists. But tai chi is practiced for both its health benefits and as defense training. Tai chi features its slow movements. Meeting brute force (蛮劲) with brute force is sure to leave both sides injured. Meeting brute force with softness, however, allows the incoming force to exhaust itself so it can more easily be redirected.
Wing Chun
Like tai chi, Wing Chun is based on a philosophy of overcoming hardness by softness. Relaxation and calmness are central to Wing Chun’s fighting style. Wing Chun’s two most famous practitioners were Yip Man and his pupil, Bruce Lee.
Bajiquan
Bajiquan, meaning eight extreme fists, is much more forceful in style than tai chi or Wing Chun. It features explosive, short-range motions and is famous for its elbow and shoulder strikes. The first practitioner clearly identified in history was a man named Wu Zhong.
Sanda
Sanda, also known as Sanshou, is a mixture of traditional kung fu and modern combat practices. Sanda is believed to have originated from ancient Chinese Lei Tai fights. As part of the development of martial arts sports by the Chinese government, a standard curriculum (课程) for Sanda has been developed.

(23-24高一下·安徽马鞍山·期末)Phan Thi Kim Chi’s connection with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) began at an early age. Growing up in a small village in Vietnam, it was inconvenient for Phan to travel to hospitals in neighboring cities. Whenever she caught a cold or experienced a headache as a child, her family would seek the help of a local TCM practitioner. This led her to major in TCM at a traditional medical school in China. According to Phan, even though TCM has long been commonly practiced and accepted in Vietnam, finding a good school to learn TCM in Vietnam is not easy.

It requires years of learning and practice to truly understand the concepts of yin and yang, harmony between human and nature, and the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Sometimes she even translates the TCM vocabulary and scripts into Vietnamese so she can remember and understand them better.
Overseas students of TCM, like Phan, are not rare. According to a report, the total number of international students studying TCM in China was 8, 187 last year, with the largest population of 6,441 coming from Asian countries, followed by 832 from Africa and 432 from Europe. Passage 10
(23-24高一下·广东广州·期末)Raised in Bengaluru, Meera Iyer has spent over a decade of her life discovering and restoring the city’s unexplored heritage buildings. The key moment came when she paid a visit to Devanahalli Fort. “It was shocking that many residents of the city were unaware of the presence of heritage buildings,” Meera says. “That realization became the catalyst for me to join INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage).”
Speaking on the topic of what truly makes up history in the eyes of people, Meera comments, “There are thousands of monuments (历史遗迹) in the country protected by ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). However, there are small temples, buildings, schools, and homes that also hold historical significance. The challenge lies in protecting them. I understand that it’s not practical to protect every fragment (碎片) of the past, but there must be a way to document and raise awareness about these sites, so that more of our history can be maintained.”
To deal with the challenge, INTACH hosts heritage walks. The walks mainly focus on the local community and are targeted at the citizens of the city. “While we do welcome tourists and travellers, our emphasis is on engaging the local population,” says Meera. The group has organized hundreds of heritage walks in the local language to reach the goal. The organization also works on the protection of historical buildings. In the past years, it has restored several buildings in and around Bengaluru.
Talking about the future, Meera says, “We face a number of issues, with funding being the major problem. However, my end goal is to find myself without a job. In such a desirable state, heritage is fully protected, and the community as a whole is deeply involved in its protection. While the realization of this goal may be uncertain and not immediate, it remains a significant career.”

Passage 11
(23-24高一下·湖南郴州·期末)The Holding Fist (抱拳礼) is a traditional Chinese custom, often seen in martial arts practices. To perform this custom, one must stand tall and straight, clench (握紧) their right fist, and extend their left palm with the four fingers aligned. The left hand then wraps around the right fist, and both hands are held in front of the chest, elbows down.
This gesture has two main meanings. First, the left palm’s four fingers represent the four nurturing elements of Virtue, Wisdom, Health, and Art, which embody the spirit of martial arts. The slightly bent left thumb signifies humility, reminding us to avoid arrogance. The clenched right fist symbolizes diligent training and the potential for attack. The left hand, representing virtue and discipline, acts as a check on this aggression, meaning self-discipline and restraint.
Secondly, the right fist is said to represent the five great lakes of China, while the left hand symbolizes the four seas that surround the nation. The unity of both hands reflects the brotherhood among martial artists, as stated in the saying, “The people of the five lakes and four seas are all brothers.”
The Holding Fist salute is used in various contexts to convey greetings, congratulations, and fine wishes. It is a common practice during major events and festivals like the Spring Festival to show respect when meeting relatives, friends, or colleagues. (23-24高一下·河南南阳·期末)“Well, I made it,” says Chris Green with a smile.
Recently there have been news reports and television shows reporting on the quality of school lunches. According to federal (联邦的) guidelines, French fries count as a serving of vegetables. Many parents and others are upset that a salty, deep-fried food is replacing healthier options like carrot sticks. As a result, the potato — what French fries are made of — has been getting a bad rap.
“The problem is not the potato,” insists Chris. “Potatoes are very healthy. But any food, even carrots or lettuce (生菜), will be less healthy if it’s cooked in grease (油脂).”
Two months ago, Chris decided to eat nothing but potatoes for 60 days. As a high school science teacher and son of a potato farmer, he wanted to do something to draw attention to potatoes as a healthy food and a good choice as part of anyone’s regular meals.
“It’s been an interesting experience,” Chris said. “For a while, I wasn’t sure I would make it. I was pretty tired of eating potatoes after a few weeks.”
But for Chris there were some benefits that he hadn’t expected. He’s lost 15 pounds and he feels better than he has in years. “I have so much more energy,” he says. “I’ve been running and playing on a local basketball team, and I feel like I’m playing as well as I did when I was in high school.”
And Chris has gotten a lot of attention, much more than he expected. “It’s been fantastic. Thousands of people have read my blog. I’ve been sharing recipes and talking about the experience. Every day I get to tell people what a great idea it is to eat potatoes.”

Passage 13
(23-24高一下·吉林白山·期末)Tea has delighted and fascinated the world for thousands of years. China first started exporting tea during the Ming Dynasty(1368—1644), and the drink has since come to lead humanity’s drinking habits far beyond Asia. It is the most widely consumed drink on Earth today, aside from water and coffee. China’s traditional tea-making was added to the intangible cultural heritage list of UNESCO in 2022.
The traditional tea processing techniques and associated social practices in China consist of knowledge, skills and practices concerning the management of tea plantations, picking tea leaves, manual processing, drinking and sharing of tea. Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea. Tea producers have developed six categories of tea: green, yellow, dark, white, oolong and black teas. Together with reprocessed teas, there are over 2,000 tea products in China.
Tea-related customs are not only found across the country, but also influence the rest of the world through the ancient Silk Road and trade routes. Tea is everywhere—in families, workplaces, tea houses and restaurants. The practice of greeting guests and building relationships within families and among neighbours through tea-related activities is common to multiple ethnic groups, providing a sense of shared identity and continuity for the communities.
In China, 44 registered national-level intangible cultural heritage entries are related to tea. There are over 40 vocational colleges and 80 universities that have set up majors in tea science or tea culture, resulting in over 3,000 graduates specialising in tea production and art every year.

Passage 14
(23-24高一下·江苏盐城·期末)Comfort food makes a person feel good. Food high in sugar or fat tends to improve mood by stimulating the brain’s reward system. So it makes sense that many of us may turn to food for comfort in times of stress. There’s some fascinating research that examines food as a source of comfort. However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.
Traci Mann, a professor of psychology, and colleagues conducted a series of studies with college students. The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve mood. They provided students with one of the three foods that they had indicated were their top, personal comfort foods. After producing a negative mood by having them watch movie clips designed to increase their sadness, anger and anxiety, the researchers offered the students their comfort food.
They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked, but they wouldn’t call a comfort food. The researchers found that comfort food did improve students’ moods — but only by a little bit and not more than the other food they liked.
In another study, comfort food was compared to no food at all, and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything — most likely just due to the passage of time.
The take-home message from the studies While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge (纵情) in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances to be the exception rather than the rule.
1. Which aspect of comfort food do Traci Mann’s studies focus on
A.The means by which it affects mood.
B.Its role in reducing negativity.
C.The extent to which it lifts mood.
D.Its impact on physical health.
2. How were the studies carried out
A.By comparison. B.By observation.
C.By analysis. D.By collecting data.
3. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph
A.To explain a rule. B.To introduce a concept.
C.To present a fact. D.To make a suggestion.

Passage 15
In the worsening economic environment, restaurants are turning to sharing menus to stop hard up customers from cutting back on starters and desserts.
Expenses in restaurants have fallen by 14 percent, from 25. 38 to 21. 80 per head, in part because customers are having main courses only and skipping starters and desserts, the research firm Lumina Intelligence has found. This is also hitting receipts from drinks, with the number of meals including alcohol falling from 38. 5 percent to 33. 9 percent. “To increase profit, restaurants are introducing sharing dishes across courses, including starter and dessert dishes, to encourage customers to spend more,” according to Lumina Intelligence.
Linden Stores, a restaurant that is owned by Laura Christie and her husband and was relocated to the village of Audlem from London in 2020, started a whole new menu of modern British food, with two people sharing seven dishes recently. And, for Christie, it was really a bolt out of the blue. “I wasn’t expecting it be such a hit,” said Christie. “It was quite a new idea for people. We’re in a small village but it turned out we were breaking more boundaries than we’d thought with this sharing concept.”
Linden Stores is not alone in rethinking its menu to make sharing food more commonplace. A large number of restaurants are following this, among which is EI Pastor, a group of Mexican restaurants in London. Actually, stealing your partner’s dessert is a time-honored restaurant tradition, but restaurant owners are increasingly offering two spoons as a matter of course as sharing food becomes the latest way for the hospitality industry to fight the recession.
Sharing works because restaurants have become less formal, Christie believes. “It makes people feel like they’re getting more of an experience. Sharing food offers a delicious and exciting way to put together history, culture, and love. It helps save diners spending per head. It also helps with the efficiency of restaurants, because you know what you’re having to prepare and you need fewer people to deliver it because you know, ahead of time, what you’re doing. ”
1. What is the writing purpose of Paragraph 2
A.To list restaurants’ efforts to make a profit. B.To describe people’s new food preference.
C.To introduce a new topic for discussion. D.To give some background information.
2. What does the underlined part “a bolt out of the blue” mean in Paragraph 3
A.It was quite disturbing. B.It was completely surprising.
C.It was very disappointing. D.It was rather obvious.
3. Why does the writer mention EI Pastor in Paragraph 4
A.To prove the success of Linden Stores’ reform. B.To explain the tradition of sharing food.
C.To show the popularity of sharing menus. D.To express the hospitality of restaurants.
4. What message is conveyed in Christine’s words in the last paragraph
A.Delicious food is vital in the successful running of a restaurant.
B.Good preparation makes a big difference.
C.Sharing menus is a win-win thing.
D.Sharing food helps people bond together.

Passage 8
As a foreign student, Phan finds the TCM basic theory course to be the most challenging one in the courses. Being widespread and far-reaching, TCM is deeply connected with Chinese philosophy.
Also, many Chinese medical universities had projects that sent professors overseas to teach TCM.
The fast- developing situation of TCM is not limited to schools and clinics. It has also become a lifestyle choice for many young people.

Passage 9
(23-24高一下·贵州黔东南·期末)Different ethnic groups in China have different traditional designs that they use in their clothes, handicrafts, decorations and architecture. These designs have developed over the years because of each particular group’s understanding of the world around them.
Many people, when they see these designs, are struck by their beauty, but they may not think designs are fashionable.
In the past years, it has restored several buildings in and around Bengaluru.
Talking about the future, Meera says, “We face a number of issues, with funding being the major problem. However, my end goal is to find myself without a job.
At joyous events such as weddings or birthday parties, guests may perform the Holding Fist to celebrate with the hosts. Passage 12
Well, I made it,” says Chris Green with a smile.
Chris is glad to be back to a normal diet, but he still eats potatoes at least 5 or 6 times a week. “Everyone should!” he says with a smile. “Potatoes are healthy and taste great!”

4. What is a suitable title for the text
A.Feeling Negative Try Comfort Food B.Comfort Food May Not Do Wonders
C.The Science behind Comfort Food D.Comfort Food Tends to Be Unhealthy
C 2. A 3. D 4. B
根据第二段“The researchers examined how much comfort foods actually improve mood.”(研究人员调查了安慰食物实际上能改善多少情绪。)
根据第三段“They had to assess (评估) how they felt before and after they were supposedly comforted by ice cream, pizza or whatever they had indicated they typically ate to feel better. All of the students completed the study on two separate occasions: once when they were able to eat their comfort food and once when they were able to eat another food they liked, but they wouldn’t call a comfort food.”(他们必须评估他们在吃冰淇淋、披萨或任何他们认为能让他们感觉更好的东西之前和之后的感觉。 和第四段“In another study, comfort food was compared to no food at all, and students’ moods seemed to improve even when they didn’t eat anything—most likely just due to the passage of time.”(在另一项研究中,将安慰食物与不吃食物进行比较,学生们的情绪似乎有所改善,即使他们不吃任何东西——很可能只是由于时间的推移。) 故选A。
根据最后一段“While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems. Of course, everyone can indulge (纵情) in a comfort food from time to time, but overall, aim for these instances to be the exception rather than the rule.”(虽然安慰食物可能会让人暂时感觉好一些,但它对解决情绪问题几乎没有作用。
根据第一段“However, the most interesting thing about this research may be that foods are far less comforting than we tend to believe they are.”(然而,这项研究最有趣的地方可能是,食物远没有我们想象的那样能安慰人。)和最后一段“While the comfort food may make the person feel better for the time being, it does little to address emotional problems.”(虽然安慰食物可能会让人暂时感觉好一些,但它对解决情绪问题几乎没有作用。) B选项“Comfort Food May not Work Wonders”(安慰食物可能不会产生奇迹)能够概括文章主旨,为最佳标题。故选B。

第二段“Expenses in restaurants have fallen by 14 percent, from 25. 38 to 21. 80 per head, in part because customers are having main courses only and skipping starters and desserts, the research firm Lumina Intelligence has found. This is also hitting receipts from drinks, with the number of meals including alcohol falling from 38. 5 percent to 33. 9 percent. “To increase profit, restaurants are introducing sharing dishes across courses, including starter and dessert dishes, to encourage customers to spend more,” according to Lumina Intelligence.(研究公司Lumina Intelligence发现,顾客在餐馆的花费下降了14%,从每人25.38英镑降至21.80英镑,部分原因是顾客只吃主菜,不吃开胃菜和甜点。
根据第三段““I wasn’t expecting it to be such a hit,” said Christie. “It was quite a new idea for people. We’re in a small village but it turned out we were breaking more boundaries than we’d thought with this sharing concept.”(‘我没想到它会如此受欢迎’。Christie说:‘这对人们来说是一个全新的想法。我们住在一个小村庄,但事实证明,我们打破了比我们想象的更多的共享概念。’)”可知,她没想到共享菜单会如此受欢迎。这对人们来说是一个相当新的想法。由此可推知,“And, for Christie, it was really a bolt out of the blue.(对克里斯蒂来说,这真的是a bolt out of the blue。)” 划线词“a bolt out of the blue”意为“出人意料,令人大吃一惊”,与B选项“It was completely surprising.(这完全出乎意料。)”
根据第四段“Linden Stores is not alone in rethinking its menu to make sharing food more commonplace. A large number of restaurants are following this, among which is E1 Pastor, a group of Mexican restaurants in London.(林登百货并不是唯一一家重新考虑菜单以使共享食物变得更加普遍的公司。许多餐馆都在效仿这一做法,其中包括伦敦的墨西哥餐馆El Pastor。)”可知,此处以林等百货为例指出其并不是唯一一家重新考虑菜单以使共享食物变得更加普遍的公司,即还有其他的公司采用了同样的做法;由此可知,作者提及EI Pastor是为了说明共享菜单很受餐馆的欢迎。故选C项。
4. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“It makes people feel like they’re getting more of an experience. Sharing food offers a delicious and exciting way to put together history, culture, and love. It helps save diners spending per head. It also helps with the efficiency of restaurants, because you know what you’re having to prepare and you need fewer people to deliver it because you know, ahead of time, what you’re doing.(这让人们觉得他们得到了更多的体验。
