In July 2020, over two nights and three days, with my wife, three kids and another family of camping friends, we enjoyed views of St. Vincent Gulf and a time made even more memorable by a ring.
My father had died four months earlier and I had been wearing a gold ring of his that was gifted to me. On the second day of our hike, as the rest of our group set off after lunch, I was walking at the back with my wife when I looked down at my hand where my dad’s ring usually was. It was gone.
I spent the next few minutes and hours being comforted by my friends and family and regretting how I could lose something so precious on a hiking trip. My friend encouraged me to search for my ring in my pack, which I did when we stopped for a drink. There was no ring.
We set up camp and settled in at Kingfisher Flat, the most beautiful campsite, sitting beside a flowing creek. That night I went to sleep and eventually reconciled that my ring was gone for good.
Finishing the hike the following day, back at Mambray Creek, my mate said we should have one last look for the ring at the campsite before setting off. I went along with the idea, especially given there were toilets nearby and it was a four-hour drive back to our home on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
As we approached our campsite our friends started searching around the grounds for the ring. I inspected our fuel gauge completely, while my eldest daughter walked to the fire ring where we’d been chatting and laughing. Seconds later I heard my daughter say “I’ve found it!”
I seriously could not believe what she’d said until she presented me with my dad’s ring. I accepted the ring, hugged my daughter and to this day find it hard to believe my dad’s ring was found. This precious chapter made the two nights hiking something I will never forget.
24. What happened after the author losing his father’s ring during the hike
A. The author decided to buy a new ring.
B. The group decided to end the trip early.
C. The author received comfort from friends and family.
D. The author immediately found the ring in his sleeping bag.
25. What does the underlined word “reconciled” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Felt angry and frustrated. B. Argued about the situation.
C. Made peace with the situation. D. Found a solution to the problem.
26. Why did the author agree to have one last look for the ring at the campsite
A. Because his friends insisted on searching again.
B. Because he was still hopeful of finding the ring.
C. Because he wanted to spend more time with his family.
D. Because there were toilets nearby, making it a convenient stop.
27. What’s the purpose of the story
A. to describe the natural beauty of St. Vincent Gulf and its surroundings.
B. to promote the benefits of family camping trips and outdoor activities.
C. to provide a detailed account of hiking techniques and outdoor survival tips.
D. to share the emotional journey of losing and finding a cherished family treasure.

It’s the start of a new era of AI at Google, says CEO Sundar Pichai: the Gemini era. Gemini is Google’s latest large language model, which Pichai first mentioned at the I/O developer conference in June and is now releasing to the public. This significant advance in AI will ultimately impact almost all of Google’s products.
Gemini is more than a single AI model. There’s a lighter version called Gemini Nano meant for offline Android devices, a more powerful version called Gemini Pro that will power many Google AI services, and an even more capable model called Gemini Ultra — the most powerful LLM (大语言模型) Google has yet created. It seems to be mostly designed for data centers and enterprise applications.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT in 2022. Now Google is ready to fight back. “We’ve done a very thorough analysis of the systems side by side,” says CEO Sundar Pichai. Google ran 32 well-established criteria comparing the two models, from overall tests to the Python code generation. “I think we’re substantially (大量地) ahead on 30 out of 32 of those criteria.” he adds.
Gemini’s clearest advantage comes from its ability to understand and interact with video and audio. This was by design: multi-modality has been part of the plan from the beginning. Google built one multi-sensory model from the beginning, unlike OpenAI’s separate models for images and voice.
Right now, Gemini’s most basic models are text-based , but more advanced models like Gemini Ultra can work with images, video, and audio. “Over time,” Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says, “Gemini will gain more senses, become more aware, accurate, and grounded. These models just sort of understand better about the world around them.” These models still have other problems, but Hassabis says they will improve as they learn more.
28. What is Gemini according to the text
A. A new language model in development.
B. A light AI model designed for offline use.
C. A new language model developed by Google.
D. A light AI model created for specific enterprise applications.
29. What does Gemini Nano specialize in
A. Generating Python code. B. Running on offline Android devices.
C. Powering Google AI services. D. Training separate models for images and voice.
30. What is a key advantage of Gemini over OpenAI’s ChatGPT
A. The ability to write Pyth on code.
B. The ability to work with video and audio.
C. The understanding and interaction with textual data.
D. The ability to create separate models for images and voice.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Google will bring the most advanced models.
B. Gemini models outperform OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
C. Google will still work on the perfection of Gemini models.
D. Gemini models are launched without even a slight imperfection.
C 29. B 30. B 31. C
根据第二段“There’s a lighter version called Gemini Nano meant for offline Android devices,”(有一款名为Gemini Nano的轻量级版本,适用于离线安卓设备)可知,Gemini Nano 专门用于离线安卓设备,故答案是 B。
根据第四段“Gemini’s clearest advantage comes from its ability to understand and interact with video and audio”(Gemini最明显的优势来自于他们理解视频和音频的能力。)
最后一段提到“but Hassabis says they will improve as they learn more”(但哈萨比斯表示,随着他们学到更多,他们会进步的)可知,Google 还将继续完善 Gemini 模型,故答案是 C。

Oranges, reds, yellows…a kaleidoscope of colour. “It was like walking in the Alps in autumn. Truly amazing!” Israeli geologist BoazLangford is describing one of the vast caverns in Dark Star --- a huge cave system tucked inside the Baisun-Tau mountain range in an isolated region of Uzbekistan. Langford was part of the international team of scientists and cavers who explored the system in 2014.
“In another branch there are frozen lakes; elsewhere, huge waterfalls. The variety of sights is incredible. Every area is different. Dark Star is like no other. Totally unusual. I’m a scientist, and not very religious, but there is something spiritual about that place.” Political instability and its remote location have kept the depths of Dark Star (named after a 1974 sci-fi comedy film) hidden from human eyes. But in 1990, a British team managed to reach one of the entrances and so exploration of this dark underworld began. Around 17km of passages, along with additional entrances, have since been discovered, but all of the openings sit halfway up a 200m-high limestone cliff. And just getting to the base camp at its foot is a long and treacherous journey.
Why are scientists bothering to traipse for days across inhospitable terrain (地貌) to reach a remote comer of Uzbekistan What could possibly be lying in the depths of the cave to make all this hardship worthwhile
Information about Earth’s past and future climate is captured in cave mineral deposits. These are made from flowing or dripping water laden with minerals --- calcite, aragonite and gypsum. Over time, the minerals build up to create rock formations called stalagmites and stalactites.
“By analysing such cave mineral deposits, I can go into the past and learn more about how the local climate evolves, and how that reflects regional or global changes,” says Dr Sebastian Breitenbach, a palaeoclimatologist at Northumbria University, who’s currently working on samples from Dark Star.
The usual ‘radiocarbon clock’ only works back to about 40-50,000 years and then it's over because there’s no radioactive carbon left to count. Beyond 40,000 years, we have very little information about past climate in terms of chronology. But the great advantage of using cave deposits is that we can use other radioisotopes (放射性同位素), such as uranium, which have a longer decay chain. This basically means that we can track the time accurately to about half a million years.
“Both uranium and lead can be present in stalagmites. And we can leap even further back if we use uranium-lead, because lead is stable --- theoretically, we could date back to the Big Bang. And once you have the dating, you have a chronology, and can use climate proxies to look into how the climate --- and environment --- evolved.”
In short, stalagmites are great climate archives or historical climate records in other words, because they grow in caves all over the world, relatively undisturbed for millions of years, isolated from external factors, such as extreme weather and human or animal interference. But getting a good sample from such remote settings back to the lab can be challenging --- if the stalagmite breaks, it’s a long, long journey back to get another one.
32. What does Dark Star feature
A. Unique mountains with vegetation of diverse colors.
B. A remote location free from political instability.
C. Popular places of interest ideal for a spiritual journey.
D. Limestone caves with varied terrains.
33. What’s the purpose of venturing into Dark Star
A. To explore cave mineral deposits by means of stalagmites.
B. To harvest stalagmite samples for climate research.
C. To study rock formation of stalagmites and stalactites.
D. To prove the effectiveness of uranium as a radioisotope.
34. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of stalagmites in climatic chronology research
A. Both uranium and lead can be present in stalagmites.
B. They are less affected by factors because they are sheltered in the cave.
C. They are readily available despite their being fragile.
D. Their diverse mineral deposits carry archives of Earth.
35. Which can be the best title for this passage
A. Unlock Earth’s Mystery Underground B. Venture into Dark Star
C. Climate Chronology, a Mystery To Solve D. Stalagmites, Earth’s Climate Archives
D 33. B 34. C 35. A
根据文章第一段中“Israeli geologist Boaz Langford is describing one of the vast caverns in Dark Star - a huge cave system tucked inside the Baisun -Tau mountain range in an isolated region of Uzbekistan. (以色列地质学家博阿兹 兰福德正在描述暗星(Dark Star)中的一个巨大洞穴 —— 一个隐藏在乌兹别克斯坦偏远地区拜孙 - 陶山脉内的巨大洞穴系统。)”以及第二段中“Around 17km of passages, along with additional entrances, have since been discovered, but all of the openings sit halfway up a 200m-high limestone cliff. (此后,人们发现了大约 17 公里长的通道以及其他入口,但所有入口都位于 200 米高的石灰岩悬崖的半山腰。)”可知,Dark Star有着多样地形的石灰岩洞穴。故选D项。
33. 细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Information about Earth's past and future climate is captured in cave mineral deposits. (有关地球过去和未来气候的信息都保存在洞穴矿物沉积物中。)” 以及第五段““By analysing such cave mineral deposits, I can go into the past and learn more about how the local climate evolves, and how that reflects regional or global changes,” says Dr Sebastian Breitenbach, a palaeoclimatologist at Northumbria University, who’s currently working on samples from Dark Star. (诺森比亚大学的古气候学家塞巴斯蒂安 布赖滕巴赫博士说:“通过分析这类洞穴矿物沉积物,我可以追溯过去,更多地了解当地气候是如何演变的,以及这如何反映区域或全球变化。”他目前正在研究来自暗星的样本。)”可知,冒险进入Dark Star的目的是采集石笋样本用于气候研究。故选B项。
34. 细节理解题。根据文章第七段“Both uranium and lead can be present in stalagmites. (铀和铅都可以存在于石笋中。)”,可知这是其在气候年代学研究方面的优势,A项“Both uranium and lead can be present in stalagmites (石笋中可能存在铀和铅)”是优势;根据文章最后一段“because they grow in caves all over the world, relatively undisturbed for millions of years, isolated from external factors, such as extreme weather and human or animal interference. (因为它们生长在世界各地的洞穴中,数百万年来相对不受干扰,与极端天气、人类或动物干扰等外部因素隔绝。)”说明其受外界因素影响小,B项“They are less affected by factors because they are sheltered in the cave. (因为它们被庇护在洞穴中,所以受到的影响较小。)”是优势;根据文章最后一段“But getting a good sample from such remote settings back to the lab can be challenging - if the stalagmite breaks, it's a long, long journey back to get another one. (但是,从如此偏远的地方把一个好的样本带回实验室可能很有挑战性 —— 如果石笋断裂了,要再去取一个就得走很长很长的路。)”可知石笋并不容易获取,所以C项“They are readily available despite their being fragile. (尽管它们很脆弱,但仍然很容易获得。)”不是优势;根据第四段“Information about Earth's past and future climate is captured in cave mineral deposits. (有关地球过去和未来气候的信息都保存在洞穴矿物沉积物中。)”说明其蕴含地球气候档案,D项“Their diverse mineral deposits carry archives of Earth. (它们多样的矿物沉积物携带着地球的档案。)”是优势。故选C项。
35. 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Oranges, reds, yellows…a kaleidoscope of colour. “It was like walking in the Alps in autumn. Truly amazing!” Israeli geologist BoazLangford is describing one of the vast caverns in Dark Star - a huge cave system tucked inside the Baisun-Tau mountain range in an isolated region of Uzbekistan. ( 橙色、红色、黄色……五彩斑斓。“这就像是在秋天的阿尔卑斯山中行走。真是太神奇了!”以色列地质学家Boaz Langford正在描述Dark Star中的一个巨大洞穴——这是一个隐藏在乌兹别克斯坦偏远地区Baisun-Tau山脉内的巨大洞穴系统。Langford是2014年探索这个系统的国际科学家和洞穴探险者团队的一部分。)”第五段“By analysing such cave mineral deposits, I can go into the past and learn more about how the local climate evolves, and how that reflects regional or global changes (通过分析这样的洞穴矿物沉积,我可以追溯过去,更多地了解当地气候是如何演变的,以及这如何反映出区域或全球的变化)”以及最后一段“In short, stalagmites are great climate archives or historical climate records in other words, because they grow in caves all over the world, relatively undisturbed for millions of years, isolated from external factors, such as extreme weather and human or animal interference. But getting a good sample from such remote settings back to the lab can be challenging—if the stalagmite breaks, it's a long, long journey back to get another one. 故选A项。
Medicine is a degree that consists of an endless number of exams, and recently I received my first year results. Waiting for those results was one of the most anxiety-generating experiences.
36 Failing brings judgement from others, a topic of discussion for people, and the right for others to say you are not capable. The stress associated with failing is created by others around you, rather than by the event itself.
I have recently been reading The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel, which clarifies that failure has a strong presence among those who have achieved success. People will always focus on Warren Buffett’s success as an investor. 37
The process of achieving success has often involved setbacks and “failures” along the way. I received a “pass” grade on an important research paper during my master’s, which put my final grade in a dangerous situation. I was rejected from medical schools which I’d spent time and effort applying to and preparing for. 38 I also began studying Medicine last year.
39 But you should know that with each failure you are closer to success, building further layers to the foundations you started. Behind every successful person are more obstacles and setbacks, but these are not as interesting to focus on or as enviable.
The noise around you, whether it be from co-workers, friends or parents, should not shake your belief in your abilities. 40 Learn what you need and correct your approach until you reach your success.
A. Failure is your platform to success.
B. You are guaranteed a lifetime of success.
C. I was turned down by countless graduate schemes.
D. You may not be successful the first, second or however many times.
E. Upon reflection I believe that this is partly as a result of the failure itself.
F. Despite all of this, I ended up getting a distinction in my master’s degree.
G. However, rarely will they see how many times his investments have failed.
E 37. G 38. F 39. D 40. A
36. 根据上文“Waiting for those results was one of the most anxiety-generating experiences.”(等待这些结果是最容易产生焦虑的经历之一)和下文“Failing brings judgement from others, a topic of discussion for people, and the right for others to say you are not capable.”(失败会带来别人的评判,成为人们讨论的话题,也会让别人有权说你没有能力)可知,上文提到等待结果的过程是很让人焦虑的,原因应该是害怕会有失败的结果,下文分析了失败会带来什么样的结果。
37. 根据上文“People will always focus on Warren Buffett’s success as an investor.”(人们将永远关注沃伦·巴菲特作为投资者的成功)推知,接下来要提出巴菲特也有投资失败的时候。
38. 根据上文“I was rejected from medical schools which I’d spent time and effort applying to and preparing for.”(我被医学院拒绝了,我花了很多的时间和精力去申请和准备这些医学院)和下文“I also began studying Medicine last year.”(我去年还开始学习医学了)可知,上文提到作者曾经的失败经历,下文提到他成功开始学习医学,所以中间应该提到过渡:虽然以前失败,但是后来还是成功了。
39. 根据下文“But you should know that with each failure you are closer to success, building further layers to the foundations you started.”(但你应该知道,随着每次失败,你离成功更近了,在你开始的基础上再进一步)中的but可知空格处要和这句话构成转折。
40. 根据下文“Learn what you need and correct your approach until you reach your success.”(了解你需要什么,纠正你的方法,直到你取得成功)可知,这是在说明学会从失败中吸取教训就会成功。 故选A。

56. recognition menting 58. was denied 59. before 60. rejected 61. that 62. from 63. academically 64. generations 65. a
故填was denied。
此处为固定句型“it be+时间段+before…” 故填before。
故填that。
故填from。
故填a。

A Sweet Song
“Nothing will ever be the same again,” Ally whispered. She sank slowly into her father’s favorite chair and stared at the small American flag on his desk. It was the flag which Chief Russell had given to her after the funeral last summer, when he hugged her and told her how proud the Police Department was of her dad’s work for them. His tears had warmed Ally’s cheeks; her own tears were still frozen inside her heart.
Ally looked at her father’s picture on the bookcase. Dad was sitting in the middle of a stream, wet through but grinning proudly. “I miss you, Dad,” she said softly. By this time last year she had already taken dozens of pictures. Ever since she could remember, she and Dad had been a team, searching the woods behind the house each weekend for a glimpse of the special wood warbler (林中莺).
Ally reached for the first photo album she and Dad had put together. On the cover a tiny orange bird with blue-gray wings and sharp black eyes peered out of the photo her father had clipped from a local newspaper. Ally smiled, remembering the excited look on his face when he first showed her the pretty bird. “Ally, I bet if we search real hard, we’ll see this little guy together some day.”
They’d never spotted the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. Staying with Dad, Ally felt comfortable. “If only I could get that good feeling back,” she thought, sighing.
Staring at the bird, suddenly, she knew exactly what she had to do. Grabbing the-little flag, she placed her camera around her neck and hurried outside. Ally stuck the flag among the flowers in the garden. “Please let me see the warbler,” she murmured to herself. She gave her worried Mom a kiss and then set off into the woods.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
Familiar smells of the earth rose up to greet her. ________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Determined to start out the next morning, she was about to head home when a ringing birdsong floated down to her. _______________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Familiar smells of the earth rose up to greet her. Some things never change, Ally thought. Quickening her pace, she hurried to the rock by the stream where she and her father used to sit and eat lunch. She sat on it, with her face toward the sun. Overhead the sky was filled with birds busily diving to gather dried grass to place in their nests. Their sweet songs echoed throughout the woods. Ally felt content for the first time in a long while. She could almost hear her father’s laughter in the gentle breeze as she listened for the sweet song of the special bird. All too soon, the sun disappeared behind thick gray clouds.
Paragraph 2:
Determined to start out again the next morning, she was about to head home when a ringing birdsong floated down to her. It was prettier than any she had heard before. An excited feeling bubbled up inside Ally as she searched the sky. A flash of orange dashed down and rested on a nearby branch. For a moment Ally couldn’t believe her eyes, but it was true. The tiny wood warbler just sat there, looking around, as if it were waiting for something. Ally blinked back tears. “Thanks, Dad,” she whispered slowly lifting her camera and taking careful aim. “Things will be different without you. I’ll always miss our time together, but I feel better now.”
行为类:①做决定:determined to do/ make a decision/ make up one’s mind to do sth.
②回家:go back home/return home ③四处看:look around/ look about
情绪类:①满足:feel content for / be satisfied with ②激动:excited / fevered
