Escaping the city and getting back to nature is a great way to relax and recharge — there is nothing quite like sleeping in a treehouse. These new treehouses range from cosy to luxurious. Besides the well-known Bower Treehouse, we’ve found a few others in the UK.
Gwdy Hw, Wales
In the heart of the Welsh mountains, Gwdy Hw has six treehouses designed with the surrounding woodland in mind, so much so that they melt smoothly into the valley’s treeline. Each cosy treehouse features a wood-burning stove, a double bed, and a toilet. The only thing missing is electricity, so you can avoid using your digital devices and exchange electric lights for twinkling lanterns while reading comfortably under blankets.
Netherby Estate, Cumbria
Set in the grounds of the Netherby Estate, with views of the Scottish border, this cabin-like outpost (前哨基地) has been built among ancient oak trees. That makes it feel a little more well- built than other treehouses, but it’s a cosy nest, just the same, and is filled with home comforts. Kids will love the mezzanine level (夹层), accessed by a ladder, while adults will enjoy the outdoor hot bath.
Treetops at the Fox & Hounds Country Hotel, Devon
If you only saw the inside of this luxury space, you’d have trouble believing it was actually supported on stilts (桩子) and built around a tree. There’s a free-standing bathtub, for starters, as well as a living room with a sofa, a king-size bedroom and amazing wooden inner parts throughout. A private terrace (露台) overlooks the fishing lake, providing a true escape into nature.
21. If you want to take a break from social media, which treehouse should you consider
A. Bower Treehouse.
B. Gwdy Hw, Wales.
C. Netherby Estate, Cumbria.
D. Treetops at the Fox & Hounds Country Hotel, Devon.
22. Netherby Estate, Cumbria is a great place for you to ________.
A. lie in bed counting stars B. cook food for your family
C. have fun fishing with your friends D. enjoy the sight of ancient oak trees
23. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A research paper. B. A travel brochure. C. A novel. D. A fashion magazine.

The story of an 11-year-old piano prodigy (奇才) Jude Kofie, warmed hearts on Twitter after a complete stranger gifted the boy a 15,000 piano.
“He’s beyond special. He’s at the Mozart level,” piano tuner (调音师) Bill Magnusson said of young Kofie’s musical talent. Magnusson, using the money he received from his father, gifted a 15,000 piano to Kofie after he saw the piano prodigy on local news.
Kofie cheered in excitement as the piano was wheeled into his Colorado home for the first time in a video that was shared on CBS News Sunday Morning. CBS News Sunday Morning later summed up Kofie’s story in a tweet that went viral (走红) with over 10,000 likes-Eleven-year-old Jude Kofie, of Aurora, Colorado, demonstrated a remarkable talent when he discovered an old keyboard and, without any lessons, began playing.
Twitter users responded to the emotional story, with one reporter calling Jude Kofie and his family “amazing people”. Magnusson decided to help Kofie after he saw the boy playing the piano in a local news story. However, Magnusson was concerned that Kofie was not able to afford the piano lessons from professional teachers that he needed to grow as an excellent piano player. “What resources are left over to help this special little soul ” Magnusson asked. Magnusson also promised Kofie’s family that he would tune the piano once a month for the rest of his life. “We’re family now,” he said.
Jude Kofie’s father, Isaiah Kofie, was shocked at Magnusson’s generosity. “All for free!” he said. “Who does that ” he asked, becoming visibly emotional. He also said that he was extremely grateful for Magnusson’s kindness to his son.

If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again.
It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science& Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society.
In the study, researchers estimated that shopping at physical stores for frequently bought items such as toilet paper, shampoo and toothpaste, often results in less greenhouse gas emissions (排放) than ordering the products from a company that only sells through the Internet.
The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase. “When they shop in a store, they aggregate these items in a single large purchase,” noted Sadegh Shahmohammadi, one of six researchers who worked on the year-and-a-half long study.
“Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi.
The team modeled their research on the movement of goods from the factory all the way through to the end consumer. They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.
The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks& clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.
28. What’s the author’s purpose in mentioning the new report
A. To recommend a strange shopping habit. B. To introduce a respected scientific journal.
C. To analyze online shopping. D. To prove the advantage of offline shopping.
29. What does the underlined word “aggregate” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Combine. B. Produce. C. Divide. D. Check.
30. What can we learn about “the last mile” delivery
A. It is designed by the research team. B. It is managed by the factories.
C. It causes high greenhouse gas emissions. D. It influences the total greenhouse gas footprints.
31. According to the analysis, which is probably the most eco-friendly way to shop
A. Buying at physical stores. B. Buying from bricks & clicks.
C. Buying from pure players. D. Buying a few items per time.
D
In the old days — say, the 1980s — if you bought a piece of technology, a paperback user guide came with it. It was the manufacturer’s one big chance to explain its engineers’ thinking to you, to communicate what the designers and marketers had in mind.
Supplying documentation seemed, at the time, like a good idea all around. Mastery made customers happy, and happy customers meant repeat sales. But there were other forces at play. Printing and binding took time and money — and customers didn’t seem to be reading user manuals.
Over time, therefore, physical manuals began disappearing from our hardware and software boxes. Maybe you’d get a Quick Start leaflet, but the rest was online.
Online, you can search for certain terms, find topics faster and post questions for other people. Online communities and answer sites sprang up. Mini tutorials on the Internet began showing you how to perform a task. And it’s all free.
Meanwhile the kind of technologies we use has changed. “People increasingly spend time in apps and social sites that have a fairly simple interface (界面),” Tim O’Reilly told me. (He’s founder of O’Reilly Media, which publishes my own how-to books. )You don’t need a manual to use Google.
That was the beginning of the end for physical manuals. In principle, the death of professionally prepared support materials shouldn’t be any cause for concern. It’s just another big change caused by the Internet, another in the list of casualties, such as printed encyclopedias, newspaper classified ads and music on discs.
In reality, though, none of the tech industry’s teaching channels, whether physical or online, is universal and effective. To this day, it’s astonishing how little we know about our phones, computers and software. A Microsoft product manager once told me that most feature requests the company gets for Microsoft Office are, in fact, already features of Microsoft Office.
Hardware and software makers still operate with their traditional business model: Every year or so they sell us a new version, whose appeal is supposed to be more features. And so, as time goes by, our devices and apps become more and more complex — but access to documentation remains limited and incomplete.
In the fantasy version of our world, designers would make our tech products simple enough, their important features obvious enough, for the masses to figure out on their own. Until then, there will be a growing information gap between the features we want and the engineering work that’s already been done.
32. The word “casualties” (paragraph 6) is closest in meaning to _________.
A. causes B. manuals C. industries D. victims
33. Why did the author mention what a Microsoft product manager once told him
A. To criticize the lack of access that we have to complete documentation.
B. To reveal the traditional business model that software makers operate with.
C. To emphasize that it is a pity that physical manuals are no longer available.
D. To illustrate that people actually know little about the tech products they use.
34. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Tech companies’ teaching channels are shrinking as time goes by.
B. There is little chance that tech products will soon be simple enough.
C. Printed manuals worked better than online versions.
D. Consumers of the 1980s loved to read user manuals.
35. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage
A. What Happened to User Manuals B. How Did Physical Manuals Prosper
C. How Simple Will Our Tech Products Be D. What Change Has the Internet Brought About

My family moved from Toowoomba, Canada to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain from the 1950s epidemic of polio She wished to visit specialists in London. The day before we boarded the ship, Father bade a tender farewell to his five-year-old “friend” at the dock(码头), an Australian cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas.
Six weeks later, a letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father’s face crumbling and his eyes glistening as he read the letter. We tried to comfort him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was. Sandy has advertised constantly on ABC radio and other local newspapers. Despite some “sightings” in the dock at first, the dog was never found later. It seems Spider decided to search for us elsewhere.
We sailed back two years later and re-established our home in Toowoomba. My father immediately began his own searching for Spider. Several months passed but there was still no news concerning Spider. The dog was gone, possibly shot or dead from starvation or exhaustion.
One cold morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an old lady who said she was putting food out “for a very old dog”. In the night the food disappeared. This had been going on for a few weeks. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework and we set off immediately. When we arrived at the old lady’s house, she invited us into an old bush. Sadly, she then told us that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle (口哨) for Spider.

Good morning, boys and girls. In the past years, our school held many competitions successfully, like Singing Competition, Reading Competition, Dancing Competition, etc. I do know most of the students want to have a reading competition as was held last year, but now we’ll have something funnier. It’s the Pet’s Competition. Well, in fact, it aims at letting students know the importance of loving animals. Nowadays, too many people can’t treat animals well. Some people do not think carefully before getting a pet. You will not be disappointed because our teachers will not be using dull theory to put a love of animals in us. Instead, we can all learn something from a relaxing environment. The competition will be based on the dogs’ ability. Unfortunately, this competition is not open to our pets this year. Our school has selected five dogs for this competition. That means we can just sit back and enjoy, so please come to join this event and keep your diary during the activity. How can you afford to miss such an educational and funny event of the year
A
Escaping the city and getting back to nature is a great way to relax and recharge — there is nothing quite like sleeping in a treehouse.

D 29. A 30. D 31. B
根据第一段的“If you think shopping online is more eco-friendly than driving to a store, think again. (如果你认为网上购物比开车去商店更环保,请三思而后行)”以及第二段“It may sound strange, but the more eco-friendly way to shop is going to a physical store rather than by making purchases online from companies that don’t have physical stores, according to a new report in Environmental Science& Technology, a peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society.(这听起来可能很奇怪,但根据美国化学学会出版的同行评审科学期刊《环境科学与技术》的一份新报告,更环保的购物方式是去实体店,而不是从没有实体店的公司在线购物)”可推知,作者提到该报告是为了证明线下购物的好处。故选 D。
根据第四段的“The main reason is because of how people shop online: Many buy items online frequently — but they only buy a few items per purchase.(主要原因是人们在网上购物的方式:许多人经常在网上购物,但每次只买几件)”以及划线单词后面的“in a single large purchase(一次性大额购买)”可知, “aggregate these items in a single large purchase”的意思应该是与前文相反,表示当他们在商店购物时,他们会将这些商品合并为一笔大额购买,所以划线单词的意思应该是“集合,加在一起”。故选 A。
根据第五段““Frequent online purchases produce more packaging waste, and online items tend to come from different distribution (配送) centers. Both factors result in higher greenhouse gas emissions per item,” said Shahmohammadi.(“频繁的在线购买会产生更多的包装浪费,在线商品往往来自不同的配送中心。这两个因素都会导致每件商品的温室气体排放量增加,”Shahmohammadi说)”以及第六段的“They then specifically focused on the part of the retail supply chain (零售供应链) called “the last mile” delivery: the distance between a store to a customer, or in the case of online shopping, the distance between the distribution center for the goods to the customer.(然后,他们特别关注零售供应链中被称为“最后一英里”交付的部分:商店到客户之间的距离,或者在网上购物的情况下,货物配送中心到客户之间)”可推知,“the last mile” delivery(最后一英里配送)指从商店到顾客或从配送中心到顾客的距离,这一部分影响了总的温室气体足迹。故选 D。
根据最后一段“The analysis showed that total greenhouse gas footprints per item purchased were higher from physical stores than those from bricks& clicks (when people order online and a physical store delivers the items to them) purchases in 63% of the shopping events but lower than those of pure players (strictly online sellers) in 81% of shopping events.(分析显示,在63%的购物活动中,实体店购买的每件商品的温室气体排放总量高于bricks & clicks(当人们在网上订购,实体店将商品交付给他们时)的购买量,但在81%的购物事件中低于纯粹的参与者(严格意义上的在线卖家))”可知,根据分析显示,在线上加线下(bricks & clicks)购物方式中,温室气体排放量在大多数购物事件中低于纯在线购物方式(pure players)。
What Change Has the Internet Brought About
D 33. D 34. B 35. A
根据第六段中“In principle, the death of professionally prepared support materials shouldn’t be any cause for concern. (原则上,专业准备的支持材料的死亡不应该引起任何担忧)”以及划线单词句中“It’s just another big change caused by the Internet, another in the list of casualties, such as printed encyclopedias, newspaper classified ads and music on discs.(这不过是互联网带来的又一个巨大变化,是印刷版百科全书、报纸分类广告和光盘音乐等诸多casualties中的又一个)”可知,printed encyclopedias(纸质百科全书)、newspaper classified ads(报纸分类广告)和music on discs(光盘音乐)都因互联网而受到影响,这里的casualties该指的是受互联网影响而受损或消失的事物,即“受害者,牺牲品”,与D选项“victims(受害者)”意思最接近。故选D项。
根据第七段“To this day, it’s astonishing how little we know about our phones, computers and software. A Microsoft product manager once told me that most feature requests the company gets for Microsoft Office are, in fact, already features of Microsoft Office.(直到今天,我们对自己的手机、电脑和软件所知甚少,令人惊讶。一位微软的产品经理曾经告诉我,公司收到的关于微软Office的大多数功能要求实际上已经是微软Office的功能了)”可知,很多用户向微软提出的功能需求,其实在微软办公软件中已经存在,这说明人们对自己使用的科技产品了解甚少,作者提及此事是为了阐述这一点。故选D项。
34. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“In the fantasy version of our world, designers would make our tech products simple enough. their important features obvious enough, for the masses to figure out on their own. Until then, there will be a growing information gap between the features we want and the engineering work that’s already been done. (在我们幻想的世界里,设计师会让我们的科技产品足够简单。它们的重要特征足够明显,大众可以自己弄清楚。在那之前,我们想要的功能和已经完成的工程工作之间的信息差距将会越来越大)”可知,使科技产品足够简单只是一种幻想,在那之前,人们想要的功能和已完成的工程工作之间的信息差距会越来越大。由此可推断出科技产品短期内不太可能变得足够简单。故选B项。
35. 主旨大意题。根据文章大意,以及第一段中“In the old days—say, the 1980s—if you bought a piece of technology, a paperback user guide came with it.(在过去,比如20世纪80年代,如果你买了一项技术,就会附带一本平装本的用户指南)”和第三段“Over time, therefore, physical manuals began disappearing from our hardware and software boxes. Maybe you’d get a Quick Start leaflet, but the rest was online.( 因此,随着时间的推移,物理手册开始从我们的硬件和软件盒中消失。也许你会得到一份快速入门的传单,但其余的都在网上)”可知,文章开篇讲述过去购买科技产品会附带纸质用户手册,接着阐述随着时间推移,纸质手册逐渐消失的原因,以及现在无论是纸质还是在线的技术支持资料都存在不足,围绕用户手册展开讨论,A选项“What Happened to User Manuals (用户手册怎么了?)”能很好地概括文章内容,作为标题最合适。故选A项。

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Paragraph 1: Suddenly there was a bark in the bush. __________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: From then on, Spider and my father would hang out at the dock. ______________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly there was a bark in the bush. My father jumped out of his seat and ran outside. We heard him calling Spider’s name. We waited nervously inside, praying that Spider would come back to us. After a few minutes, we heard my father’s voice again, louder and more excited this time. He came back inside, holding a thin and ragged-looking Spider in his arms. The dog had a few cuts and scratches on his face and legs, but he was alive. We were overjoyed to see Spider again.
From then on, Spider and my father would hang out at the dock. They would walk along the beach and watch the ships come in and out of the harbor. Spider enjoyed this routine, and my father would tell him stories about all the experiences he had while he was away. Spider was always by his side, faithful and loyal as ever. They had been through so much, but years and vast distances couldn’t break their bond. Spider found his way back to us against all odds. We were grateful to have him back, and we knew that he would always be a cherished member of our family.
行为类:①跳起:jump/leap ②返回:come back/return ③喜欢:enjoy/be fond of
情绪类:①紧张:nervously/tensely ②感激:be grateful/be thankful
