The survival of the genetically unique Key deer in Florida is an incredible environmental success story. But few people know that it is a man’s tough approach and deep love of the shy creatures that have helped save the entire species.
Admittedly, it’s hard not to love the creatures that can be found only in the Lower Florida Keys. Male Key deer weigh approximately 90 to 100 pounds full-grown, and stand about the size of a large dog. Females are a little smaller, averaging 60 to 70 pounds full-grown. Male or female, they’re big-eyed, graceful and extremely rare.
But in the early 1900s, the deer were a main food source for the locals. By the 1930s, they were over-hunted to the point of extinction. Although Florida outlawed hunting Key deer in 1939, illegal hunting continued. The darkest times came around 1950 when only 50 Key Deer (or less) were alive in the world.
The saving of Key deer from total extinction is generally credited to one man: Jack Watson. When the National Key Deer Refuge was established in the Lower Keys in 1957, he was appointed the first manager and quickly declared a one-man war on poachers targeting the deer under his protection.
“As soon as my father became the manager, he spread the word that he was a no-nonsense guy who would do whatever it took to protect the Key deer,” Jack’s son, Kip Watson, recalled during an interview. “Once he ran across a hunter’s car in the refuge, he disabled it by putting a few bullet (子弹) holes in the gas tank.”
Kip remembered another time when his father discovered people were hunting deer on Little Pine Island, which was reachable only by boat. He heard shots, found the hunters’ boat, and stationed himself nearby to catch them when they returned to it. They didn’t come back around as quickly as he wanted them to, so he just set the boat on fire and said, “I’ll come back in the morning. I’m sure they’ll be ready to talk to me by that time.”
24.What can be learned about Key deer from paragraph 2
A.They are very cute and rare. B.They weigh about 90 to 100 pounds.
C.They can be found across the US. D.They are a main food source for the locals.
25.When did Key deer hunting become unlawful
A.In 1930. B.In 1939. C.In 1950. D.In 1957.
26.What does the underlined word “poachers” in the fourth paragraph mean
A.Rude managers. B.Strict officials. C.Illegal hunters. D.Local residents.
27.Which of the following can best describe Jack Watson’s measures
A.Ineffective. B.Heart-warming. C.Creative. D.Violent.

Back in the 1800s, Charles Darwin was among the first to come up with the idea that positive facial expressions can make us happier and negative facial expressions can make us sadder or angrier. And it is still taught in psychology classes today.
But researchers are now finding that this phenomenon may be more complex than they once thought. A study published last year that reviewed around 50 years of data, including the results of nearly 300 experiments testing “the facial feedback theory”, has found that the effects were extremely tiny.
“All told, only about 7% of the participants felt happier when they tried to put on smiling faces,” says Nick Coles who led the study. “The result adds to a debate that has been ongoing since the dawn of psychology.”
The debate over whether the simple act of moving one’s facial muscles into different shapes can make one feel happier or sadder has grown especially heated in the past few years. In another study, published in 2016, 17 labs around the globe failed to reproduce the results.
Although it was a big blow to “facial feedback theory”, in 2018, researchers in Israel reran the experiment once more. They said they were able to reproduce the results—as long as the participants weren’t being observed or filmed.
“It gets complicated,” says Paula Niedenthal who was not involved in the recent research. “Part of the reason for the disparate findings may be that there are slight differences in the dynamics of each expression. For example, there are lots of different kinds of smiles. Not all smiles are genuine smiles of joy, and they’re hard to re-create in a lab.”
Moreover, though most lab studies have found that there’s no harm in smiling, a study published this year found that service workers who had to put on a smile for customers all day had a higher risk of heavy drinking after work.
“I think we should hold back on telling people to turn their frowns upside down,” Niedenthal advises. “Because I know when I’m sad and people tell me to smile, it just makes me angrier.”
28.What might Charles Darwin suggest we do when we are sad
A.Put on forced smiles. B.Seek advice from psychologists.
C.Think about happy things. D.Express our true feelings honestly.
29.How did Nick Coles carry out his study
A.He did hundreds of experiments. B.He interviewed thousands of people.
C.He followed the participants for decades. D.He analyzed data from many related articles.
30.According to the latest study, forcing oneself to smile all day may lead to ______.
A.confidence B.depression C.relaxation D.embarrassment
31.What is Paula Niedenthal’s attitude to “the facial feedback theory”

An ad is usually remembered for one of two reasons: It relates so deeply to viewers that they can’t stop talking about it or it makes people so upset that they rush to social media to complain. The ad for Apple’s new iPad seems to fall into the latter category.
Posted on social media Tuesday by Apple CEO Tim Cook, the ad shows a hydraulic press (液压机)destroying almost every creative instrument artists and consumers have used over the years, from record players, to books and cameras. Within about 40 seconds, all of the creative instruments are destroyed under tons of force in a dramatic fashion. Resulting from the destruction A new shiny iPad Pro and a narrator saying at the end of the commercial, “The most powerful iPad ever is also the thinnest.”
Apple’s intention seems straightforward: Look at all the things this new product can do. But for many viewers, the ad doesn’t mean that.
“I had a really disturbing reaction to the ad,” said a viewer. “It just shows that technology is killing everything we have ever found joy in. Now, I just want to avoid screens and spend more time enjoying the world offline.”
The ad also marks a notable difference to marketing seen from Apple in the past. “My initial thought was that Apple has become exactly what it never wanted to be,” said Vann Graves, director of the Virginia Commonwealth University. “Its famous 1984 ad introducing the Macintosh computer focused more on uplifting creativity and thinking outside of the box as a unique individual. In contrast, this new iPad commercial says, ‘No, we’re going to take all the creativity in the world.’”
In a statement on Thursday, Apple apologized for the ad, “Creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important for us to design products that empower creatives all over the world. We missed the mark with this video, and we’re sorry.”
The ad also arrives during a time when many feel uncertain or fearful about seeing their work replaced by technological advances—particularly amid the rapid commercialization of generative artificial intelligence. And watching beloved items get destroyed doesn’t help reduce those fears.
32.How do the viewers feel about the new iPad ad
A.Amazed. B.Moved. C.Displeased. D.Confused.
33.What does Apple really want to show about its new iPad
A.Its powerful function and weight. B.Its fantastic sound quality.
C.Its huge storage and convenience. D.Its resistance to destruction.
34.What message did consumers get from the 1984 ad according to Vann Graves
A.Apple was a unique symbol for buyers. B.Apple could help users to be more creative.
C.Apple was a young but competitive company. D.Apple was good at making high quality computers.
35.Where is the text most probably taken from
A.An introduction to a company. B.A guidebook to selecting electronics.
C.An essay on the art of writing ads. D.A report of a company’s advertisement.

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The Monkey King is one of China’s most successful cultural exports
The Monkey King, like many iconic fictional 56 (hero), such as Harry Potter and Batman, had an unhappy childhood. Sprung from a rock on a mountain, he overcame early 57 (hard) and acquired such extraordinary skills as somersaulting clouds and turning each hair on his body into a version of 58 (him). Although the Monkey King seems like many of the Hollywood characters, he is different. He is more than 400 years old and comes from China.
With fiction considered a bad entertainment during the Ming dynasty, the novel was published in 1592 without 59 (reveal) the author’s identity. It is believed that it was written by Wu Cheng’en, a clerk’s son who repeatedly failed the exam 60 (get) a government position.

But 63 ancient story has become very popular in the world since then. In the past century, the book has been adapted into more than 60 films, countless TV shows, children’s books and video games.
As in all good storytelling, from Shakespeare to Star Wars, the fight in this story is for the hero’s soul. But each Monkey King retelling has served as a mirror on its times, reflecting the anxieties of its creators. 第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The teacher’s hand froze in the middle of writing something on the blackboard and the whole class laughed, when Mohi rushed into the classroom. Having recovered from his initial shock, the teacher turned around to face the rest of the students. Gradually, the laughter died out.
“Sorry,” Mohi said quickly and hurried to his seat.
Mohi was jokingly called “little Einstein” by his classmates, because he was so absent-minded that he rarely showed up with appropriate clothing. Today, he wore a pair of funny green shoes that were too big for his feet. And his half-buttoned shirt revealed a very silly red underwear. Actually, Mohi’s classmates always looked forward to such moments that helped to brighten up their otherwise boring school life.
Although his classmates found Mohi amusing, they ignored him most of the time. And Mohi seemed too absorbed in his own thoughts to care about making friends with them, either. Mohi’s only friend was Hamed, who sat beside him.
One day, Mohi did not show up at school. After school, Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi’s house to check on him. As he approached the gate, he could hear violin music. “Mohi has never played music at school,” he thought. “Maybe, he is listening to a record.”
He called Mohi’s name several times but there was no response. As the gate was not locked, Hamed let himself in. His eyes widened in surprise: At the center of the living room, Mohi was lost in playing the violin. With his eyes tightly closed, Mohi played so beautifully that the music seemed like coming from a classic record.
“Maybe I could find an opportunity for Mohi to show his talent and be appreciated more by the rest of the class,” Hamed thought.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When Teachers’ Day came around, a good idea occurred to Hamed. _____________________________

W: Time will heal all wounds.
(Text 5)
M: It’s raining cats and dogs outside, but the delivery man made it to our house and tolerated the hardship on the way. He deserves five stars.
W: You are right. And I’m going to log in the app and give him some tips.
(Text 6)
W: Kent, why are you so absent-minded nowadays All of the students except you and your desk mate were reading aloud in the morning.
M: Sorry, Miss Liu. I just found it hard to keep focused.
W: That’s not an excuse. You even played Bingo games.
M: It was my fault. I didn’t mean to violate the rules. Instead, I wanted to memorize more words in a relaxing way.
W: But you indeed made a mistake and disturbed others. Stop talking back!
M: OK, I will reflect on my mistake and accept your criticism.
(Text 7)
M: Joyce, what’s your ideal job I told my mom my career plan, but she strongly opposed it.
W: When I was in middle school, I desired to sing like Han Hong. Now, I think it is fine to follow the path of Zhong Nanshan. And why was your mom dissatisfied with your ideal job
M: If I’d answered like you, she’d have been delighted. However, I’m eager to become a professional ice cream taster.
W: Oh, that sounds new to me. You’d better gather more data. After all, not everyone gains a full understanding of that job.
M: Thanks for your tip. I’ll give it a shot.
W: My pleasure. I’m a big fan of ice-creams with various flavors. Hope you can hold on to your dream. (Text 8)

W: It seems that you captured the beauty of the nature. What did you learn from that class
M: When I was immersed in the breathtaking landscape, my inspiration was fueled. I came to realize art creation should be based on reality or life.
W: I can’t agree more. But art classes in my school usually give way to math lessons. How can I improve my drawing skills
M: Don’t worry. You always have a pair of beauty-seeking eyes.
(Text 9)
M: Darling, a new hot pot restaurant near our home is engaging customers with amazing discounts. Let’s have a try.
W: No. Summer is around the corner. To slim down, I decide to skip dinners.
M: It’s unnecessary. No one once laughed at your figure. This so-called “quick-fix” method is likely to backfire.
W: Many girls adopt this method, which proves effective. Benefits of losing weight are evident. It will give me more confidence.
M: You just notice one side. I read a news report this morning, which is about a lady fainting after skipping meals. Think twice before doing that.
W: Alright. I’ll listen to your advice and just skip dinners on Fridays and Sundays. Frankly speaking, I’m anxious about my appearance.
M: I see. Every time you get up in the morning, you look into the mirror carefully. But don’t judge a book by its cover.
W: Well, let’s dine out tonight. I’ll consult a dietician tomorrow.
(Text 10)
M: “Change doesn’t mean evolution,” Pablo Picasso said in 1923, who was born in 1881 and died in 1973. “If an artist varies in his ways of expression, this only means that he has changed his manner of thinking, and it may be for the better or it may be for the worse.”
With these words, Picasso clarified two central principles of his artistic production over nearly 80 years: his openness to a diverse range of styles, and his opposition to the idea that changes in art are necessarily associated with improvement or progress.
Take his diverse approaches to painting the human head as an example. Works as different as The Painting Woman With Pears, The Pastel Woman With a Flowered Hat, The Sculpture Head of a Woman, and The Ceramic Tile Head of a Faun show some of the various creative strategies that Picasso adopted, abandoned, and returned to. Even though during his life Picasso’s works were praised as representative of specific artistic movements, the artist actively challenged thoughts of pointless changes of styles.

第二节
One possible version:
When Teachers’ Day came around, a good idea occurred to Hamed. It was the tradition of the class to have a concert for their teachers on Teachers’ Day and every student could volunteer to play his or her favorite music in front of the class. Hamed shared his idea with Mohi. At first, Mohi was unwilling to play. After Hamed told him what he had thought of his music talent, Mohi eventually agreed to have a try.
The teachers and students were surprised to see Mohi walk onto the stage with a violin. They had never seen him play any instrument or sing a song in public. But as soon as he started to play, they fell silent. As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence, which was followed by thunderous applause. After the applause died down, Mohi cleared his throat and said shyly, “Thanks to my teachers and classmates for tolerating my absent-mindedness. Thanks to Hamed who always tries to see the best side of me.”
