Growing up, I disliked writing. It was the last thing I wanted to do and it’s one reason why I pursued science in the first place. In high school, I hated writing essays. For hours, I stared at blank pages, trying to turn my scattered thoughts into fluent sentences and I often received papers marked with numerous corrections. I began to wonder if I was simply not cut out for writing. And that was OK. I didn’t have to be good at everything.
I focused instead on my love for math and science. I took comfort there, knowing objective truth could be found if I searched methodically. In college, I studied engineering and joined a research lab to gain hands-on experience. My first project was to improve the efficiency of a magnetic component. Despite initial disappointing results, I continued through numerous designs. Eventually, we developed a design that halved energy losses. I was delighted—until my professor told me to write that research paper.
I knew that if I wanted to become a researcher, I would need to spend time penning papers. But I was scared of failing. In a panic, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. We defined a goal for the paper, and I carefully wrote an outline. But when I asked him for feedback, I soon found the paper covered in red marks. He explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. Writing isn’t a one-and-done thing. It requires revising your work, often several times. Suddenly it occurred to me, “Hadn’t I done the same thing when I was searching for an efficient design ”
I polished my paper’s outline into sentences and paragraphs, guided by feedback. Though my first draft wasn’t perfect, with help, I enjoyed the process of improving it. Writing has since become one of my favorite parts of research, helping me organize my thoughts. I’ve even started writing popular science articles, which I never could have imagined during my early struggles with essays.
24.What did the author initially think of writing
A.A piece of cake. B.A ray of sunshine.
C.A nut hard to crack. D.A diamond in the rough.

A can of soft drink and two large eggs may have a similar number of calories, but the eggs will provide us with protein, vitamins and other nutrients, and satisfy our hunger, while a fizzy drink provides little more than calories. The important concept here is nutrient density (密度), which refers to the number of nutrients we take in for each calorie consumed. No one would suggest replacing sweet drinks with eggs, but what can we do to increase nutrient density in our diet
“Have you had your five a day ” on British supermarket shelves is a reminder to customers to ensure they are eating at least five slices of fruits and vegetables per day, promoting a healthy diet. Many countries have launched similar campaigns to encourage people to eat more healthily. Fresh, natural produce is usually very dense in nutrients. Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables is important, so some advice focuses on including different colors of food in our diets. “Eating a rainbow” could be one way to get more nutrients.
Other advice recommends that we should be more adventurous in what we eat. Cooking food that we haven’t eaten before can lead us to use ingredients that we don’t usually consume. This can give us a wider range of nutrients. It’s not just about fruit and vegetables. Even flavorings such as garlic, ginger or turmeric can have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, while also leading people to use less salt. Dairy products such as milk and cheese, are high in calcium, while in limited amounts, meat can be a good source of protein.
If you’re not feeling that adventurous, then swapping food items can be beneficial. Choosing wholegrain bread or rice instead of white bread or rice can increase fibre intake. Unsalted nuts provide more nutrients than snacks such as crisps. Possibly surprisingly, popcorn is a wholegrain snack that is high in fibre.
So, fresh fruit and vegetables, swapping the worst things, and just a little bit more adventure could be the secret to a more nutritious diet.
28.What does “Eating a rainbow” suggest
A.Focusing on low-calorie foods. B.Avoiding white and black foods.
C.Adding variously colored foods to what we eat. D.Including rainbow-colored snacks in our diets.
29.What can happen if we are more adventurous in our food choices
A.We reduce calories in our diets. B.We eat more fruits and vegetables.
C.We consume more unhealthy food. D.We gain access to diverse nutrients.
30.Which of the following is the healthiest swap
A.Swapping white rice for wholegrain rice. B.Swapping two eggs for a can of soft drink.
C.Swapping popcorn for wholegrain bread. D.Swapping unsalted nuts for white bread.
31.Which of the following serves as the best title
A.Eating a balanced diet is essential B.Nutrient density is key to a healthy diet
C.Eggs are a better choice than sugary drinks D.Fruits and vegetables are always the best choice
D
In early August, the sandy hills along the coast of La Libertad, in northern Peru, are alive with bluish-purple fruit. The region, thought unsuitable for blueberries just over a decade ago, is now placing Peru at the forefront of the global blueberry market.
lvaro Espinoza, an agricultural engineer, was among the first to experiment with blueberries in Peru 15 years ago, when the fruit was unknown in the country. “People called me crazy,” he recalls. Since then, Peru’s blueberry industry has been growing rapidly, from planting only a few hundred acres of blueberries in 2012 to the world’s top exporter of fresh blueberries for the last five years.
Inspired by the success of their Chilean neighbors, Peruvian entrepreneurs began exploring a local blueberry market in the early 2000s. However, conventional wisdom held that blueberries needed temperatures below 45℉ to thrive, which the Peruvian coast lacks.
Peruvian entrepreneur Carlos Gereda, a pioneer in the industry, began traveling to Chile in 2006 to learn about blueberries. On one of his trips, he brought back 14 varieties to test in Peru’s desert. It took him two years to find the right one, named Biloxi. With this variety identified, he invested $300 to start a company that became a Peruvian blueberry leader, helping Peru’s blueberry industry expand to over 49,000 acres. Today, Peru exports over twice as many blueberries as its nearest competitors, with over half heading to the US, where the country supplies 40% of fresh imports.
But last year, this boom faced its first setback. A major heat wave driven by an El Ni o event hit northern Peru, severely damaging blueberry crops and causing a 25% drop in production. This experience has accelerated efforts to develop new, genetically improved blueberry varieties that can thrive in even hotter climates. To create these robust varieties, scientists develop new seeds and evaluate them over years to select the best individuals. They aim to create heat-tolerant plants and produce “jumbo” berries—one inch or larger—to meet global demand.
32.Why did people initially think blueberries couldn’t grow in Peru
A.The soil was too salty for blueberries.
B.The climate was thought to be unsuitable.
C.Peru lacked the right equipment for farming.
D.Blueberries were unknown to people in the country.
33.How did Carlos Gereda contribute to Peru’s blueberry industry
A.He promoted Peru’s blueberries in global markets.
B.He found a suitable blueberry variety for Peruvian climate.
C.He carried out researches into blueberry farming in the US.
D.He created heat-tolerant plants and produced “jumbo” berries.
34.What major challenge did Peru’s blueberry industry face last year
A.A shortage of new blueberry varieties.
B.A new competitor entering the market.
C.Unusually hot temperature reducing the blueberry output.
D.A significant decrease in global demand for fresh blueberries.
35.What does the underlined word “robust” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Fast-growing. B.Good-quality. C.High in demand. D.Strong and adaptable.

Love is a powerful emotion that makes the world go round. It teaches lessons, brings warmth, and can sometimes cause pain. But how does love actually work
36 Family love, for example, is a deep, long-term connection. Romantic love, however, is unique. It begins with intense emotions and may grow into a lasting bond resembling family love.
All types of love have one thing in common—they have a big effect on the brain. When a person feels love, chemicals in their brain like dopamine and oxytocin increase. 37 Seeing someone you love can cause increased heart rate, leading to butterflies in the stomach and shaky hands. Love can even affect basic functions like appetite and sleep, making people in love sometimes feel less hungry or sleepy!
Why do people feel love 38 Loving families and caregivers provide protection and support, which is crucial for survival, especially in childhood. Later in life, when people start to love romantic partners, this is driven by similar needs.
Scientists have found that love may also have several health benefits. 39 Spending time with loved ones can also lead to a longer lifespan. In fact, close family and community relationships are one factor that may help people live longer.
There are plenty of ways to express love. You can demonstrate love by showing appreciation and giving compliments. Small favors, or giving a hug can also show a person you care. 40 If you care about someone, tell them so. If you’re not sure what to do, just ask yourself: What actions make you feel loved
A.There are different types of love.
B.Of course, words work just fine, too!
C.Many experts believe it’s rooted in survival.
D.Many people say love is all they need in life.
E.It can reduce stress and lower blood pressure.
F.You may have read about the science behind love.
G.That’s one reason why love often causes a physical response.

Tom always wanted to follow in his elder sister Emily’s footsteps, no matter what she did. For instance, when Emily practiced playing the piano, he would sit beside her and randomly press the keys, even though he was in fact a total stranger to music. Each time, Emily would feel a bit annoyed, wondering if he could find something else to do.
This time, it was Tom’s first week at swimming lessons, while Emily had been swimming for two years. Emily stood by the poolside, waiting for her turn to demonstrate freestyle swimming. She frowned as she watched Tom across the pool. Couldn’t he find his own activity “Emily, it’s your turn!” Coach Susan called out. Emily dove into the water and swam a graceful lap, earning applause from the coach and other kids.
Emily noticed that Tom had wandered away from the beginners’ group to watch her swim. “Tom!” his instructor, Coach Mark, called from across the pool. Tom seemed not to hear. Only after being called three times did he slowly return to his group. It was Tom’s turn to try floating. He looked extremely nervous. When he attempted to float, he accidentally took in some water, causing surprise and laughter among the other children.
Feeling embarrassed, Tom ran towards the changing room. He was gone from the pool area, just as Emily had wished. But this time, it didn’t feel right. After informing Coach Susan where she was going, Emily hurried to the changing room. She found Tom crying. Seeing Emily, Tom cried even harder. “I don’t want to take swimming lessons anymore,” he sniffled.
This was Emily’s chance. If she said nothing, Tom might quit swimming forever. “Tom, everyone finds things difficult at first,” Emily said gently. “When I started swimming, I choked on water too. But you shouldn’t give up because of one mistake. We can practice together, and I’ll help you get better.”
Hearing Emily’s words, Tom eventually stopped crying and nodded. The siblings held hands and returned to the poolside, ready to face new challenges together.

第二节
One possible version:
Standing by the poolside, Tom appeared more relaxed but still somewhat nervous. Emily gently held his hand as Coach Mark called for him to try again. Tom took a deep breath and stepped into the water, glancing at Emily for reassurance. With a nod from his sister, he slowly floated on his back, trying to remember the techniques she had shown him earlier. This time, he didn’t choke on water, and although he swayed slightly, he managed to stay afloat.
“You see, you can do it!” Emily encouraged. Tom smiled, feeling proud of himself. Emily swam beside him, offering tips and cheering him on. As they practiced together, the laughter from the other kids no longer made him feel embarrassed. With Emily’s support, Tom realized that learning something new might take time, but it was worth it. By the end of the lesson, Tom felt more confident, and for the first time, he was eager to come back for the next class. The siblings walked home hand in hand, ready for whatever challenges tomorrow would bring.

根据第四段中的“Choosing wholegrain bread or rice instead of white bread or rice can increase fibre intake.”
这些现象都是身体对爱的反应,因此选项G(这就是为什么爱常常会引起身体反应的原因)最为合适。
因此,选项C(许多专家认为这与生存有关)贴切地解释了爱的起源。
关系代词which指代先行词a superstructure in traditional Chinese wooden style,引导非限制性定语从句,并在从句中作主语。
60.are held
connection between A and B是习惯搭配,意思是“A和B之间的联系”。
Text 1
W: If it is still this hot tomorrow, we may as well give up the idea of having a picnic in the afternoon.
M: Oh, I don’t think it’ll last long. The forecast says it will be cloudy by mid-afternoon.
Text 2
M: Hi, Helen. Where are you off to
W: To the library. I’ve got a history paper due next week, and need to do some reading.
Text 3
W: Excuse me! Is this seat taken
M: No. Do you want to sit by the window
W: Yes. I feel sick travelling in the car.
Text 4
M: You have to go now, Judy, or you’ll miss your train to the university. It’s an hour’s drive to the station.
W: I’m leaving. Don’t forget to water my flowers. Just a minute, where’s my student ID, Dad
Text 5
W: Wow, Greg, that’s pretty cool.
M: Thanks, Maria! I just bought it from Richards. He can’t use it anymore since his move to a smaller apartment. It needs a little work, but I pay a little for it.
W: It is really worth the money.
Text 6
W: Jerry, you look a bit different.
M: I have put on about 5 pounds this month. I weigh 160 pounds. You look so slim. Can you tell me what you often eat and drink
W: Well, I don’t eat any meat. But I do eat fish and eggs. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. I never drink alcohol, coffee or tea. I like drinking milk.
M: How often do you exercise
W: I jog every day. I find jogging is good for me, so I keep on doing it.
M: May I jog with you
W: Certainly. See you tomorrow.
Text 7
W: My brother Jack is helping with the relief effort after the tsunami disaster.
M: Is that the one who’s a helicopter pilot in the air force
W: Yes, that’s right. He got his wings last year.
M: He must be transporting food and water to survivors.
W: He is now, but at first he was helping to evacuate survivors trapped in coastal areas because all road and rail communications had been destroyed.
M: That must have been quite a job.
Text 8
W: As you can see from the diagram, our model is very competitive on the market. If you’ll refer to the figures in your handouts, you’ll see that this item is very sought-after and there is a big market for it.
M: Please give us some good reasons why we should purchase this item.
W: One good thing about this item is its high technology. It can save time and money, which I know is your company goal. Therefore, this product is just right for your needs. We highly recommend this item for your company.
M: Your presentation is very impressive. We do have great interest in this item. But we’d like to try it out before we place an order for it.
W: That’s for certain, Mr. Harbor. Here is a sample for your company. And we look forward to receiving your order in the near future.
Text 9
W: George, welcome to the show. You’ve had a fantastic few years, haven’t you—with both gold and silver medals in international events
M: Yes, I’m really pleased with the way things have gone lately.
W: Was it your school teachers that made you believe that you could have a career in sport
M: Not really. I had some great teachers and now I have some of the best coaches in the world, but it’s always been my father that has told me that I can achieve anything I want to do.
W: There must be some things that aren’t so good.
M: Oh, of course. I have to train all the time, which generally I enjoy, and I get to travel to some amazing places, but I have a baby son now and I really miss him when I’m away. It’s difficult for my wife, too.
W: Do you mind the reporters everywhere wanting to interview you
M: Not at all. It’s all part of the job.
W: Finally, are you going to retire soon and become a full-time dad or maybe become a TV presenter for a sports channel
M: No, not for a long time! But I’m especially interested in working in schools, in poor areas, as quite often that’s where the athletes of the future can be found.
Text 10
W: Hi, I’d like to tell you an interesting experience. It happened two years ago. A man named Charles Fagin from a Hollywood film studio came to me and said my house looked perfect for a film he was working on. He asked me if I’d be interested in renting it out for a few weeks.
The money he offered was attractive, but there was one more thing. They’d dig up my lovely garden. I was a little hesitant. But finally I agreed.
Fagin told me they’d paint some rooms, but he promised they’d repaint them after the shoot, and they’d fix anything they damaged. Preparation on the house began a month before the film shoot. The crew painted the living room gray. They brought in a larger sofa and dug holes in the ceiling for the lights.
For the film shoot, which took place over four days, I agreed to be out of my house, staying with my relatives. Fortunately for me, the shoot went well. But the scenic painters’ attempt at repainting my living room before they left was so poor that I ended up painting it again myself.
