Passage 10
On Tuesday, there will be a tiny salt shaker(小盐瓶) symbol on menus in some restaurants in New York City. It warns certain meals are high in sodium(钠). The first US city is taking the step to fight against heart disease and stroke(中风).
Any menu item with more than 2.3 grams of sodium in it must have the emblem of a salt shaker in a black triangle. Many scientists give us the advice: A person shouldn’t eat more sodium than the daily limit every day, which equals about one teaspoon of salt.
“It’s not hard to get 2.3 grams of sodium into your mouth,” said Dr Howard Weintraub from New York University Langone Center(预防中心). A study found New Yorkers eat more than 3,200 mg of sodium each day on average(平均), the health department said.
For most Americans, eating in the restaurants such as Chipotle(小辣椒) and Subway(赛百味)is thought to be more healthy. The new menu symbol may be an eye-opener for people who go to eat in these restaurants. Until Tuesday, they may haven’t noticed that there is 2,790 mg sodium in a Chipotle loaded chicken burrito(双层鸡肉卷). And a foot-long spicy Italian sub(香辣三明)has 2,980 mg sodium in Subway.
Getting New Yorkers to start watching their sodium intake is a first step. And people should do more to improve their health. “Things are not going to work out great if all you do is just not eat salt,” Weintraub said. “But maybe, just maybe, they’ll start to watch how much they eat, maybe they will get off the subway a stop earlier and walk, instead of taking the elevator, they will walk two flights, there will be some weight loss.”

A. all restaurants across the US will use the salt shaker symbol
B. New Yorkers eat one teaspoon of salt each day on average
C. eating too much salt can cause heart disease and stroke
D. New York will ban (禁止) smoking in public places
4. The underlined word “eye-opener” in the passage probably means “__________”.

1—5 BACDC

Passage 12
Many of us love stories of time travel, aliens, and the future. But Chinese sci-fi (科幻小说) has not seen much attention until now. One work from a Chinese writer made it a hit around the world.
On Aug 23, Liu Cixin, 52, won the world’s top sci-fi prize. He’s the first Asian to ever win the Hugo Award. Liu received the award for Best Novel through his book The Three-body Problem (《三体》).
Liu’s winning work takes the reader back to China in the 1970s. In the book, scientists found a planet with three suns. The aliens on the planet created their own civilization (文明) called “three-body”. The aliens planned to invade (入侵) Earth, but humans on Earth started to form camps to protect themselves from danger.
Liu uses his professional background in computer engineering to write the book. His work is seen as “hard science fiction”, which aims for scientific accuracy (准确). Some say this is why Liu’s novels stand out among other similar Chinese books.
The Chinese culture in Liu’s work also makes his book special. For example, Liu’s work talks about filial piety (孝顺). This is a theme Western sci-fi doesn’t pay much attention to.
According to Liu, China is growing quickly and is full of temptations (诱惑). This makes it the perfect time for sci-fi. Most importantly, Liu’s work, like many successful works of science fiction, is popular with people who are unsure of the future.
“People nowadays are locked in this small box of reality, but science fiction is a way to broaden our minds,”said Liu.
1. According to the article, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Liu Cixin is the first Asian to win the world’s top sci-fi prize.
B. The Hugo Award is an award for science fiction.
C. Liu Cixin wrote The Three-body Problem with his friend.
D. The Three-body Problem is a story set in the past.
2. In The Three-body Problem, _____.
A. there was one sun in the system
B. humans and the aliens were friends
C. the aliens wanted to invade Earth
D. humans gave up fighting against enemies
3. What makes The Three-body Problem different from Western Sci-fi?
A. It is based on scientific accuracy.
B. Readers can find Chinese culture in the book.
C. It includes some uncertain parts about the future.
D. It can broaden people’s minds.
4. According to the passage, who will love The Three-body Problem?
A. Jim who never wins the Hugo Award.
B. Lucy who was born in the 1970s.
C. David who doesn’t get on with his parents.
D. Lily who doesn’t make sure what will happen in the future.
本文介绍了首位获得“雨果奖”的中国作家刘慈欣以及其获奖作品《三体》,着重从作品内容,创作背景和作品含义方面分析了此部科幻小说。1—4 CCBD
Passage 13
Do you love the city life or the life in the countryside? Many people want to move from the country to the city because they think that life in the city is more exciting and better than in rural areas, especially younger people who like new, modern things.
Often people like to be fashionable and feel they can find the latest styles only in the city. Other people are interested in technological(技术的)things and high tech jobs and think they can find them only in a big city. If they want to find a job, especially a good position in a company, they feel they have to live in a city. To enjoy these jobs, they are willing to put up with many of the disadvantages of city life such as crime, high traffic, and pollution.
However, it is now possible to enjoy a higher quality of life in the countryside and still enjoy some of the advantages of living in the city. Nowadays, travel is fast and information is available on the Internet, so many people are able to do their work in home offices.
Because they have e-mail and personal computers, they don't have to be in big cities to do their business. It is not important where they actually work because the results of their work can be sent everywhere. So, why should they put up with all the disadvantages of the city any longer? Now they can escape noisy city life to enjoy life in the countryside and still be able to do good business and successful careers.
