The world needs more goodness this holiday season — more kindness and more care for one another. During
the holidays, there are simple ways to give back and help children in need.
Double Your Donation
By donating to the Matching Gift Fund, you can double the impact of your donation. For every dollar you
donate, a dollar will be unlocked from the fund for donation. Moreover, it allows you to receive a 100% tax
deduction (抵税) for your donation.
Raise Your Voice
It is a good chance to use your voice and your social networks to take action on serious issues that impact
children during the holidays. Kids can’t vote (投票) or fight for their rights, which is why Save The Children
Action Network needs you. You can even tell Congress (国会) to provide aid and protect kids’ future!
Donate Monthly
Team Tomorrow is a new way to connect with the causes you care about, from the climate crisis (气候危机) to
inequality, by becoming a monthly donor. You can choose an issue you’d like to receive updates on and your
donation will go to support programs that deal with your selected issue. The ongoing support of monthly donors

Jack DowDell loves to play kickball with his neighborhood friends. The teenager with Down syndrome (唐氏
综合征) lives in Salt Lake City with his family.
His parents, Devon and Kimberly DowDell, didn’t know about Down syndrome before Jack was born. “We’ve
stepped into this journey that was so unknown and foreign to us, and we’ve just run with it,” Kimberly told
PEOPLE.
They use their social media following on TikTok and Instagram to share about Jack’s life. They post about
Jack’s love of music and his love of being active. Because he is a little smaller and slower than many of his partners,
his parents worry that other kids might leave him out or fear he could get hurt.
This summer, they came up with a beautiful plan to help Jack stay active. Devon suggested a kickball game.
The couple then invited the neighborhood kids to play with Jack. His only job in the game was kicking the ball,

lowering the chances that he could get hurt.
“The first time, we had 10 kids, but then they went and told their friends and neighbors how fun it was.”
Devon said. The games just kept getting bigger and bigger. “The kids would start shouting ‘Jack, Jack’ before he
kicked the ball, and their parents were telling us how much they loved that their kids were staying active over the
summer and having fun.” Devon said. The neighborhood kids clearly wanted to play with Jack. Kimberly posted a
video about one of the games, reaching over 1.5 million views. She captioned (加说明文字) it, “Best dad ever!
Inclusion Matters! ”
Special needs parents always need to think ahead about the best way to parent their child. What Devon and
Kimberly did was so creative, making for a beautiful summer—not only for their own son Jack but also for the
neighborhood kids. They not only had the time of their lives but also learned about the importance of including
Jack, a teenager with Down syndrome.

Dogs are born with the ability of self-representation, according to a study published in 2019 in Animal
Cognition. The tested dogs in the lab slowed down and hesitated before walking through uncomfortably small
openings, showing that they rely on awareness of their body size to make decisions.
What about cats Cats may seem solid (固体), but to some degree they’re actually liquid (液体) —at least
according to one 2017 theoretical physics paper inspired by videos of cats squeezing (挤过) under doors, into small

vases and down narrow gaps. Now, one researcher has taken this idea a step further, testing a group of cats to see
when they act more like liquids or solids.
But cats are difficult to test in the lab. With help from his co-workers, Pongrácz built a special lab that they set
up in the homes of 29 cat owners. In each home, the team attached two large, cardboard panels (嵌 板 ) to a
doorframe (门框): one with five holes of the same height but reducing width and another with five holes of the
same width but reducing height. An owner stood on one side of the panel while the cat and the experimenter stood
on the other. The cat had to squeeze from the experimenter’s side to the owner’s side through the holes while being
filmed.
Thirty out of 38 cats finished the experiment. When faced with holes of different height, 22 cats hesitated to
move through the shortest. When the holes different in width, only eight cats hesitated before approaching the
narrowest hole. Most cats tried to squeeze through slim openings immediately without thinking of whether they fit
or not.
In nature, this hesitation in the experiment to move through short holes may be a self-protection approach,
Pongrácz says. If a cat squeezes through a hole without being able to see what’s on the other side, they may be
making themselves easy to hurt potentially. The fact that they still hesitate in the safety of their homes suggests that
the cats also rely on their body size to plan their approach.
8. Why does the author mention the experiment on dogs in Paragraph 1
A. To introduce the topic. B. To compare dogs with cats.
C. To present the findings of a study. D. To attract attention to dog’s behaviors.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Steps of the experiment. B. Subjects of the experiment.
C. Results of the experiment. D. Purposes of the experiment.
10. What do cats tend to consider when squeezing through a hole
A. Area of a hole. B. Width of a hole. C. Height of a hole. D. Shape of a hole.
11. What does cats’ hesitation imply in the experiment
A. They are solid instead of liquid.
B. They are trying to see the other side.
C. They are deciding a self-protection way.
D. They are waiting for their owners’ orders.

When your child does something you’re really proud of, you could immediately be to say “good girl!” or
“good boy!” without even thinking about it. However, child psychologists (心理学家) believe parents need to
rethink how we give praise, if our kids are to become adults we want them to be.
According to The Conversation, praise has been a key part of parenting for many years, with 1950s
psychologists recognizing the benefits of how it positively forms desired behaviours. This idea continued into the
1970s, as psychologists and child development experts continued to stress the importance of praising children with
phrases such as ‘good boy’ and ‘good girl.’
However, in the 2000s, research moved forward, and away from praise being key to developing a child’s
mental health. To this change, your first question may be “why are we dropping the habit of a lifetime ” The
answers are rooted in psychology and the way it develops as knowledge in the area increases.
Modern psychologists believe that praising kids continuously could lead them to believe they need to act and
make choices to gain adults’ agreements, preventing their ability to make good choices on their own. Some
research has even pointed over-praise, including words such as ‘amazing’ and ‘unbelievable,’ results in an
unrealistic sense of what kids can actually achieve. Adults offering lots of praises, could find their children always
need more praises to do the right thing.
So our real focus should be on helping children develop a positive sense of identity — rather than thinking
highly of themselves. We need to shift towards a sense of safety and belonging in kids. The end result of this should
be children feeling confident in their own ability to feel comfortable with their actions, rather than relying on
outside forces such as parental praise.
As a parent you can give realistic feedback (反馈). For example, “Well done. I can see you’re trying there
with your handstands,” instead of “Amazing handstands! You are extremely amazing at gymnastics!”
12. What was the parenting idea of praise rooted in before the 2000s
A. The side effects it had on kids. B. The desired benefits it brought.
C. The research experts conducted. D. The popularity it gained among parents.
13. Which feedback might be well received now by experts
A. So good a girl. B. Unbelievable handstands.
C. Extremely amazing. D. Well done. I see you’re trying.
14. Why should parents’ praise focus on children’s sense of identity
A. To help them know their real ability.
第 7页/共 12页
(北京)股份有限公司
B. To make them not depend on parents.
C. To help them think highly of themselves.
D. To guide them to make use of outside forces.
15. What is the passage mainly about
A The harm over-praise does to kids. B. The development of parenting ideas.
C. The importance of parents’ realistic praise. D. The positive effects parental praise produces.
