When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery.
Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate(补救)what I already had.
The challenge before me was to revive the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns; prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers; integrating crops, trees and livestock; and sheltering soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work.
I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I made a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities.
In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earth worms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white fungal mycelium(真菌菌丝).
Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard—it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity(个体)in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die.
24.What was the soil problem in the author’s garden
A. Wet and salty. B. Poor and stony.
C. Dry and sandy. D. Acidic and weedy.
25.What was the focus of the author’s gardening methods
A. Limiting plant variety. B. Adopting a high-tech approach.
C. Giving more intervention. D. Creating a sustainable environment.
26.Why does the author mention the replanting in May
A. To introduce different species. B. To prove the garden shelters insects.
C. To show the soil has come to life. D. To explain the transplanting process.
27.What is conveyed in the last paragraph
A. Soil has a soul. B. Life is well defined.
C. Life has complexity. D. Soil is the source of life.

According to an idea called the “inflationary(暴胀的)multiverse”, the universe has been constantly expanding, which would have created a countless number of other universes. Collectively, these universal islands form what scientists call a “multiverse”. However, other universes may lie beyond our scientific reach, physically and philosophically. Consequently, the methodologies by which physicists might validate(验证) the multiverse and whether such validation is even possible remain unresolved inquiries.
In science, hypotheses(假)are used to propose explanations, but from hypotheses to theories, validation of predictions is essential to see whether initial assumptions are supported or disproved. Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovlli says, It is hard to write theories that survive the proof of reality. Few survive thanks to a basic idea: Do not trust your fancies. Keep only the ideas that can be tested. “Rovell adds,” Today many physicists are wasting time trying to guess and jumping to conclusions. This approach has never worked before, and it is not working now. The multiverse might be one of those wild guesses.”
Now, physicists are debating whether that problem moves the multiverse from physics to metaphysics(玄学) ,from the world of science to that of philosophy. Philosopher Richard Dawid believes scientists could support the multiverse hypotheses without actually finding physical support. “If we have a theory that seems to work, and have come up with nothing that works better, chances are our idea is right,” he says. Not everyone is so cheerful, though. Sabine Hossenfelder, another theoretical physicist, thinks “Without making contact with observation, a theory isn’t part of the natural sciences, and not physics.”
Some supporters of the multiverse claim they have found physical evidence. Andrei Linde insists “Our universe seems fine-tuned to be favourable to life, with a four-dimensional space in which we can live. It is certain that in an endlessly inflating multiverse, one of the universes should turn out like ours. Each universe can have different physical laws and fundamentals. Givenlimitless changes, a universe on which humans can be born will be borm. The multiverse actuall explains why we’re here. And our existence, therefore, helps explain why the muliverse is plausible."
Just as Einstein’s theory of general relativity could only be confirmed recently with a billon-dollar instrument called LIGO, scientists may eventually discover more direct evidence of the multiverse. So far, all of science has relied on testability, but those tests take time, and most theoreticians want to wait it out. They are not ready to shelve an idea like the multiverse- which could actually be the answer to life, the universe and everything—until and unless they can prove to themselves it doesn’t exist. And that day may never come.
28.What does Carlo Rovelli think of the multiverse
A. It is a crazy idea. B. It can be tested.
C. It is widely accepted. D. It comes from reality.
29.What does the underlined word “plausible” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Fascinating. B. Complex. C. Essential. D. Credible.
30.What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Testing the multiverse theory is a waste of time.
B. The multiverse theory will be confirmed one day.
C. Einstein’s theory of relativity is the answer to life.
D. The multiverse research has made a breakthrough.
31.What is the structure of this passage
A. B. C. D.

As we researchers predicted, we found that picky eaters scored worst on our tests of food recognition: Food neophobia(食物新奇恐惧症)is negatively related to food recognition ability.
While we were publishing our findings, scientists were debating new findings about how the brain reacts to food and color. Different research groups had identified brain areas in the visual system that responded preferential to images of food. For instance, looking al a bowl of noodles would activate these brain areas, but not looking at a pile of string. The scientific disagreement was about what it meant to identify a selectivity for food in brain areas already known for their responsiveness to color.
We repeated our initial study with gray-scale images of food. The result showed without color, people unsurprisingly made more errors, mistaking different dishes as the same, but the pattern of variation across people was otherwise unchanged. Those with a higher general visual ability did better with food. We also found one effect of removing color: Food neophobia was no longer related to food recognition ability. It was as if whatever advantage the adventurous eaters had gained over picky ones was all dependent on color.
We then made an entirely new prediction: Would people with color blindness be less food neophobic than those with normal color perception Because the colorblind experience food in a restricted range of color, certain signals that raise flags about freshness, safety, or otherwise drive anxiety about novel food could be limited.
We invited participants online, based on how they answered one question about color blindness buried in a long screening questionnaire. The survey suggested colorblind people were indeed less food neophobic than the non-colorblind. Seeing the world with a narrow color range seems to ease an emotion-based resistance to novel foods.
Our findings pave the way for addressing extreme cases of food neophobia. As researchers learn more about the complicated relevance between color perception and food, we might develop targeted interventions to improve dietary habits.
32.Which can activate the specific brain areas more easily
A.A piece of cake. B.A pair of shoes.
C.A series of books. D.A pile of string.
33.What happened when color was removed from food images
A. Mistakes were on the rise.
B. Food neophobia worsened.
C. Recognition accuracy improved.
D. Adventurous eaters were at an advantage
34.What did the survey conclude about colorblind people
A. They are less familiar with food types.
B. They are more open to nutritious foods.
C. They are less likely to resist new foods.
D. They are more worried about food safety.
35.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Supporting evidence for the research results.
B. Potential application of the research findings.
C.A further explanation of the research methods.
D.A reasonable doubt about the research process.

Online shopping often involves endless options and dizzying discounts. A single search for running shoes can produce hundreds of results. 36 What if there is a tool capable of hunting for the best prices and making sure your purchases arrive on time
The new innovation in artificial intelligence is AI agents. They are capable of autonomous reasoning and multistep problem-solving. 37 Imagine this: You remind AI to find a winter coat under $200 that’s highly rated and will arrive by Sunday. In seconds, it scans websites, compares prices, checks reviews, confirms availability and places the order, all while you go about your day.
Unlike traditional recommendation engines, AI agents learn your preferences and handle tasks autonomously. The agents are built with machine learning and natural language processing. They can learn from their interactions with users and become smarter. Looking ahead, AI agents are likely to not only master personal shopping needs but also negotiate directly with corporate AI systems. 38
Consumers today are focused on value, looking for deals and comparing prices across platforms. 39 But can AI truly learn your preferences A recent study using the GPT-4.0 model achieved 85%accuracy in copying the thoughts and behaviors of over 1,000 people after they interacted with the AI for just two hours, which is really a breakthrough.
40 AI systems require extensive access to personal data, shopping history and financial information. This level of access increases the risk of misuse and unauthorized sharing.
A. They can make purchases without being instructed.
B. However, there’s also a risk of being addicted to AI agents.
C. The process results in tired eyes and decision-making challenges.
D. They not only suggest what you might like, but also act on your behalf.
E. Having an assistant perform these tasks could be a remarkable time saver.
F. While offering significant benefits, AI agents also raise critical privacy concerns.
G. They will be able to book tailored experiences and handle payments across platforms.

In a lively city, there was a small bookstore hidden between two tall buildings. It wasn’t the most attractive place, but it had an undeniable charm. The owner, David, had inherited(继承) the store from his grandfather. Every day, he opened its creaky(吱嘎的)doors and greeted his customers with a smile, even though his heart was heavy.
David had been struggling with his business for months. Online stores had taken over the market, and fewer people walked into his store. He had always believed in the magic of physical books, but with bills piling up and his savings running low, he was beginning to lose hope.
One rainy afternoon, as David sat behind the counter, staring at the closed sign on the door, a young woman entered. Her name was Sophie, and she was new to the city. She had heard about the bookstore from a friend and decided to check it out.
Sophie wandered through the passages, running her fingers along the spines of the books. There was something warm and comforting about the place—despite its worn-out shelves and faded sign outside. After a while, she picked up a book on gardening—a topic she had recently become passionate about —and brought it to the counter. David greeted her, still burdened by his worries.
“You seem like you’re really into gardening,” he said softly.
Sophie smiled. “Yes, it’s been such a peaceful escape for me lately.”
David rang up the book and said, “I hope it helps you grow your garden. Plants are like people. They need care, but they can really bloom if you give them the right environment.”
Before leaving with the book, Sophie turned to him. “There’s something special about this place. I hope you keep it open for a long time."
David watched as she stepped out into the rain, her smile lingering(萦绕)in his mind. That night, for the first time in weeks, he didn’t feel the heavy weight of worry. Instead, he thought about Sophie’s words. Maybe it wasn’t about making the store bigger or more popular. Maybe it was about creating an environment where people felt welcomed—and that was enough to keep going.
注意 :
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The next day, David decided to make a change. Months later, David received a letter from Sophie.

One possible version:
Dear Jim,
I’m thrilled to hear that you’re going to enter the Spring Festival Image Exhibition. I would like to give some advice.
It’s a good idea to take pictures of dragon and lion dances in Chinatown. These dances, performed to drive away evil spirits and welcome in prosperous times, offer a glimpse into the festive atmosphere of Spring Festival. Alternatively, you can consider capturing a scene of family members making jiaozi together. Nothing is better at displaying the essence of Spring Festival — family reunions. I’m confident that these pictures will showcase how well Chinese culture has been embraced and spread overseas.
Hope you can get some inspiration! Feel free to ask me if you need further help.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
One possible version:
The next day, David decided to make a change. He started hosting weekly book clubs, inviting people to share their love for books and stories. He added a cozy corner for people to relax, drink tea, and talk. Slowly, more people began to come, and the bookstore regained some of its old charm. But more importantly, David rediscovered the joy of simply sharing what he loved with others. He found himself looking forward to each new interaction, eager to connect with people who shared his passions. It wasn’t just about selling books anymore — it was about creating a space where people could escape, share, and feel seen.
Months later, David received a letter from Sophie. In the letter, Sophie thanked him for the impact the bookstore had on her life. She wrote, “Your bookstore isn’t just a place to buy books. It’s a place where people find comfort and connection. Thank you for keeping it open.” David smiled as he read the letter. He had never imagined that something as simple as a smile and a small conversation could change the course of his life. Sophie’s message reminded him of something important: the power of a smile, a kind word, and a place where people felt they belonged.

M: Don’t worry, Claire. The ads say the energy bar contains all the nutrients you’ve mentioned. They say it can be a perfect substitute for daily meals.
W: Oh, don’t get fooled by those ads, Jeff. It’s all business. Let me see it — sugar, fat and chemicals… How dare they claim it to be healthy

M: Swimming is a great exercise as well as a vital skill. That’s why we offer swimming lessons to children aged between 4 and 16 at affordable prices. Not all children will be at the same level, so we have classes for different ability levels and ages. The levels are as follows: Pre-school, Foundation, and Development. Our Pre-school children’s swimming lessons are aimed at those aged 4 to 5. These lessons focus on developing their confidence in the water and teach them essential swimming skills along with the basics of water safety. The Foundation swimming lessons are designed for kids who are aged 4 and over. By the end of this course, they will be able to swim 10 meters unaided and know the basics of swimming movements. The
Development classes are prepared for children aged 5 to 16. These lessons will cover more swimming essentials, including developing techniques and basic survival and rescue skills in the water. Additionally, you can treat your friends to 15 off a course when you recommend them. If they join, you’ll receive a two-week course of your choice. So if you’re interested, prepare your swimwear and come join us.
