Wildfires continu ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed to burn in Washington State and across the Pacific North-west on Wednesday. These fires are part of a large group of fires. There are now 21 fires burning in Washington and Oregon, with 100 more fires across the Pacific Northwest. The recent outbreak of fires has caused Washington’s Commissioner of Public Lands, Peter Goldmark to issue a special order. “Unusual fire danger exists and is forecast to continue,” he said in a Commissioner’s Order. “Therefore, outdoor burning, including campfires in fire pits (火坑)and the use of charcoal briquettes(煤砖)is banned on public land.”
The Pacific Northw ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )est is well-known for its rainy and cool climate. But this year it has been unusually hot. In Washington State, temperatures over the past weekend were the highest the region has ever had. The hot weather has resulted in a great number of wildfires. According to a report, there have already been nearly 400 wildfires in the region this month compared with 275 in the same month last year.
The fires have reached the Olympic National Park in Washington, where a lightning strike grew into a wildfire. Known as one of the wettest places in the country, a warm winter and a dry spring left the park vulnerable(易受伤害的)to the largest fire since the park was established.
The fires have caus ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed much destruction. In Washington, 23 homes have been destroyed, and fires have consumed more than 5,000 acres. I come from I ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )reland. Today I want to talk about the Leaving Certificate Program. It was introduced in 1924 and 91 years later little change has been made to the program.
How can we expect the students of the 21st century to sit for the same exam as generations before us For two years students have been memorizing quotes, dates and facts all leading up to the exam in the fearful month of June. The Leaving Certificate Program involves students learning a large amount of information and then digesting (消化)the information to get as many points as possible. However, there are some students who due to no fault of their own cannot take the exam.
They cannot simply re ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )take the exam because it is only held once a year in June. As a result, students face great pressure to succeed in what is undoubtedly the most important exam of their lives.
A single exam can shap ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e the course of a student’s life. This is another reason why I believe the Leaving Certificate Program does not cater for today’s modern society. I also think it unfair that students are examined academically(学术上地)but not in any other area. We are being told that everyone is unique, and some excel(擅长)at academics while others’ talents lie elsewhere.
Comparing our educatio ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n system with America’s, where continuous assessments are used, there is no doubt that America has a much stronger system in place. There students are examined on a regular basis, which spreads out the burden of study and lessens the pressure placed on students.
28. What can we learn about the Leaving Certificate Program
A. It has changed a lot.
B. It has nothing to do with the course of a student’s life.
C. It focuses more on students’ talents than academics.
D. It requ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ires students to memorize a large amount of information.
29. The underlin ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed phrase “cater for” in Paragraph 3 probably means “__________”.
A. adapt to B. result from C. appeal to D. deal with
30. What’s the author’s attitude to American education system
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Approving. D. Thankful.
31. The author’s purpose in writing the text is mainly to _________.
A. advise B. advertise C. entertain D. complain
D
One day I was dr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )iving home with a woman. She rolled down the window, fifty feet away from the driveway and spit her gum (口香糖)out of the window. “Couldn’t you just wait five seconds and put your gum where it belongs ” I asked, annoyed.
She was not the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) only one who was gum-lazy. Consider the following. Every time I brush chewed gum under my desk, I shake with fright. At Folsom Middle School, whenever I had to walk by the gum wall next to the girls’ locker room, I felt totally disgusted. When I was young, I walked outside during my dance show in my ballet shoes, always stepping right on a big and juicy piece of bubble gum. I was extremely upset.
The worst part of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) all these incidents is that a trash can is located near. But some people are too lazy to walk towards it.
If you can’t b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e a responsible gum chewer, don’t chew at all. That’s all I’m going to say.
Take Singapore as a good example. The chewing gum ban in Singapore was placed in 1992. It bans the import and sale of chewing gum in Singapore, whether for the purpose of trade or personal chewing. However, the ban has been partly lifted with some types of gum, such as medical gum, allowable. This comes with the warning that it is sold only by a druggist, who has to take down the names of buyers. Obviously, the Singapore government gets angry at gum stuck in keyholes of mailboxes and on elevator buttons.
Not only is it ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )annoying, but chewing gum can actually do harm to the health. Most gum contains aspartame (阿斯巴甜), a chemical sweetener(增甜剂)that the US government is now deciding whether or not it is a deadly chemical. If it is, it may cause cancer. Other studies suggest that aspartame may cause neurological(神经系统的)disorders. Therefore, aspartame is not allowed to use in the US.
So just say no to chewing gum.
32. What did the author think of the woman’s behavior
A. It was strange. B. It was dangerous.
C. It was unacceptable. D. It was violent.
33. According to Paragraph 2, the author _________.
A. stepp ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ed on a piece of gum while dancing B. cleaned gum under her desk sometimes
C. often foun ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d chewed gum in her locker D. was troubled by chewed gum
34. What do we know about aspartame
A. It is pro ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ved to be a harmless chemical. B. It is the cause of many kinds of cancer.
C. It is the ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )main ingredient of chewing gum. D. It is being refused by the US government.
35. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To critic ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ize people who are lazy. B. To advise people against chewing gum.
C. To persuad ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e people to buy medical gum. D. To make comments on the ban in Singapore.

We need b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ooks for knowledge. 36 This leads us to explore how exactly we should go about using a library.
When visiting a library for the first time, you’d better have a look at the information posted outside. It helps us know different kinds of books offered. Most libraries have a specific rule or a credo(信条)that explains what they do and what they stand for. 37
Going through the library catalogue always helps, especially when you are new to the facility and are using it for the first time. Once you have mastered the cataloguing system and have figured out how to find what you are looking for, then it makes it easier to find your goal books. 38 It also helps you make full use of your time and resources.
39 For exam ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ple, if you are searching for information on segregation (种族隔离)in the United States, you can find not only history books that deal with the topic, but also books on art, geography, critical theory and culture. You name it, and you can find it, without having to search too much. The cataloguing system will make it easy enough for you to find your favorites.
Besides, if you can’t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )afford new books or you don’t find the second-hand ones you want, then your best choice is to go to a library. 40 And in case you don’t, you can tell librarians what you need, and they will be willing to help you.

B. Reading in a library can help us get relaxed.

D. And they also provide us with entertainment and joy.
E. The library has various books on one particular topic.
