North Rim to reopen on June 2 with limited services available
News Release Date: May 17, 2023
Contact: Jo lle Baird, 928-606-3154
Grand Canyon, Ariz
The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will open as scheduled, on June 2, with limited visitor services and water conservation measures due to a break in the North Rim water pipeline. A landslide from winter storms destroyed more than 300 feet of the North Rim water pipeline.
Visitor Services
The Grand Canyon Lodge will operate day-use services with limited food and beverage service beginning on June 2. No overnight accommodations will be available until at least July 23, 2023.
The North Rim Campground, managed by the National Park Service, will operate as scheduled beginning on June 9 with potable drinking water and toilets available. The public laundry and shower facilities will not be open at least through July 23, 2023.
The North Rim Visitor Center and Grand Canyon Conservancy’s bookstore open as usual, 8 am to 6 pm daily, with a variety of ranger programs offered.
Visitors exploring the North Rim this summer should be self-sufficient and should bring adequate food and water for the day as services are limited and may be subject to change. Nearby, accommodating is available at the Kaibab Lodge and food services and fuel at the North Rim Country Store. Year-round accommodating, food services and fuel are located 45 miles north of the North Rim at Jacob Lake. As a result of substantial winter rockfall and landslides, trail (步道) repair work on the North Kaibab Trail continues. B
My childhood was a painted picture of sunny sky and rolling green fields stretching to the horizon. It tasted of sharp berries and smelt of sour grapes. My family lived in a cabin (小木屋) in the countryside but I lived in my mother’s arms. They were so delicate but strong, her red hair falling around me like a curtain separating me from the world.
Childhood was simple. The borders of my village were the furthest my troubles went and monsters only lived in the pages of books. Every day was a waking dream of running races and muddy knees. My village was archaic, dying cabins housing dying farmers with dying traditions. There weren’t many children but me and the other boys; boys of butchers and sellers formed our own group.
They called us wild. I suppose we were. Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter. Liberated from the restrictions of society, we would bound into the woods, deeper and deeper until we found a lake which, with a wild yell, we would jump into all at once.
My most vivid memories from boyhood center around that lake. Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams broke into the outcry from birds. The shock of cold water against sweating skin would wake every nerve in my body and my bare feet would hit the sinking muddy bottom. As we submerged (淹没), time would suspend, movements slowing as bubbles rose around us.
I was drowning. I was living. I was living. I was drowning.
For timelessness or a second (both felt the same), we would suspend, curl up, and then be forced back out into breathing air.
We should have known that it wouldn’t last forever. Yet, even under the best circumstances, there’s something so tragic about growing up: to have your perspective on the people and life around you change;to always struggle to reach a mirror only to find yourself tall enough to see your reflection one day. And find, a different person staring back out at you.
24. What does the underlined word “archaic” mean in paragraph 2
A. Borderless. B. Valueless. C. Old-fashioned. D. Poverty-stricken.
25. Why did the author consider himself and other children wild
A. They played in the woods crazily. B. They tricked others purposefully.
C. They frequently broke social rules. D. They firmly refused school education.
26. How does the author introduce his memories of the lake
A. By sharing feelings. B. By expressing ideas.
C. By making comparisons. D. By describing characters.
27. What message does the author seem to convey in the last paragraph
A. Loneliness and challenges make a man grow up.
B. The regret of growth is that you have never tried.
C. Growth is often accompanied by sad goodbyes to the past.
D. Growth begins when we begin to accept our own weakness.
C
At one time, our growing population was seen as central to wildlife extinction, resource exhaustion, pollution and environmental destruction. But today, our concerns shift to declining birth rates due to increased reproductive choice for women.
This is a positive development, but is often described as a “crisis” in the media, highlighting economic and senior care challenges. Lost in the conversation are the many positive aspects of an aging society, which is the result of people living healthier and longer lives, and common-sense realities like reduced needs for infrastructure (基础设施) and lower ecological impacts. Also lost is the fact that our population still grows by 80 million people every year.
And the consequences of high birth rates are severe. Among them is global warming. In fact, increased emissions (排放) from population growth have canceled more than three quarters of the emissions saved through energy efficiency and renewables over the past three decades.
Yet, no matter how well documented the link between population and climate, lowering our population is notably absent from the conversation on solutions. Instead, the focus is on technology that will supposedly allow our entire growing population to enjoy the energy-intensive lifestyles now enjoyed by the rich, and with no climate impacts.
But “green” technology is not the solution it is advertised to be. Its expansion to the degree needed to power a growing population at a decent standard of living would itself require a shocking investment in fossil (化石) fuels. It also requires massive mining operations, many of which take place on the backs of low-wage workers in Africa where it is driving destruction of rainforests critical to the survival of great apes. Besides, it requires 10 times the land area as fossil fuel plants for the same amount of energy generated.
When global warming threatens to push billions into unsafe temperatures, it is no time to panic that we are adding fewer to those billions. In fact, declining birth rates should be cause for celebration as they signify advances in gender equality and a reduced burden on Earth.
28. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. The global population is decreasing every year.
B. The benefits of an aging society are overlooked.
C. The ecological environment is turning for the better.
D. The media make up misleading news about the population.
29. What is highlighted as a disadvantage of high birth rates
A. Reduced infrastructure needs. B. Challenges in senior care services.
C. A slowdown in economic growth. D. Increased greenhouse gas emissions.
30. Why is “green” technology questioned in the text
A. It does damage to the ecosystem. B. It is not popular around the world.
C. It is unaffordable for poor regions. D. It has little effect on reducing pollution.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Aging Societies: A Global Crisis B. The Mystery of “Green” Technology
C. The Trend of Population Growth D. Declining Birth Rates: A Hopeful Sign
D
Batteries are getting smaller, lighter and more powerful. Some personal electronics, for example, such as fitness trackers that monitor health conditions or brain-computer implants that decode neural signals to control electronic prosthetic(义肢的) devices, require more close contact.
Being unable to flex as skin and tissue does makes batteries both unreliable and uncomfortable to wear. A number of approaches are therefore being taken to produce flexible batteries, among which the most promising, though, are water-based batteries inspired by the way an electric eel (鳗) stores its charge.
A group at the University of Cambridge has used the eel’s technique to come up with what it calls “jelly batteries”. These are made from hydrogels (水凝胶) that consist of organic polymers that contain over 60% water. Whereas most batteries experience a loss of conductivity if the material is bent or stretched, a jelly battery can be stretched up to one-and-a-half times its length with no power loss.
Jelly batteries work in much the same way that biological processes produce electricity. They rely on the different concentrations of electrically charged particles, to create a difference in electrical potential, which in turn produces a voltage. Tiny, though, Jelly batteries can increase their output by being connected together.
Another feature of the jelly battery is that the strong molecular bonds that let the polymers stretch also allow the material to repair itself very quickly if it is broken. A Chinese research group has also found encouraging results with a self-healing hydrogel battery. They recently reported in Nano Research Energy that their battery could sustain a high level of bending and twisting, and even if broken ten times was still capable of self-healing.
Besides wearable and implantable devices, another potential market for stretchable batteries is soft robotics. For one thing, stretchy components would be safer to operate among people than the rigid parts of conventional robots. They could also help power prosthetic devices, such as gloves that allow stroke (中风) victims to move their hands. All this should provide plenty of ideas for wearable innovations.
32. What drives people to produce flexible batteries
A. Popularity of wearable devices. B. Inspiration from biological nature.
C. Limitations of traditional batteries. D. Higher requirement to close contact.
33. What makes a jelly battery soft and flexible
A. Its component. B. Its conductivity. C. Its structure. D. Its concentration.
34. How can hydrogel batteries produce enough power
A. Through voltage difference. B. Through connection in series.
C. By connecting a power source. D. Through various amounts of charged particles.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To describe how batteries are improved.
B. To show the differences between batteries.
C. To promote the advantages of jelly batteries.
D. To introduce stretchable and wearable batteries

Whether you like it or not, fall is here. Soon the weather will get colder. The leaves will die and the nights will stretch longer than the days. Another year is dying; that’s just how it goes.
Studies suggest that if you are deeply preoccupied with your thoughts, in the autumn, you may be at more risk for depression in the winter. Changing the clocks in the fall is associated with depressive episodes (changing them back in spring is not). ___36___
Psychologists say that the feelings that often crop up in autumn come from our discomfort with change, and an anxiety and uncertainty about what that change will bring.
___37___ And of these things the anxiety, the promise and even the careful thoughts — make it the ideal season to build resilience and practice mindfulness. Psychologists have also found that the thought of change, the ending of one thing, the beginning of another, and perhaps our own mortality, underlies a great deal of anxiety. Some of us struggle with “intolerance of uncertainty,” more than others.
But intolerance of uncertainty is a part of being human; everyone has it on some level. ___38___ One way to build tolerance is to lean into it — to cultivate uncertainty rather than running away from it.
___39___ Quietly sit on a park bench and watch a tree drop its leaves, for instance, examine the roses in the garden that need pruning ... in such moments, it’s important to stop thinking, analyzing, or having internal conversations about work or troubles or even whatever you are witnessing.
Autumn will probably hold some whisper of decay and mortality. ___40___ If you are always trying to avoid difficult feelings, you might end up also cutting yourself off from love, richness and sweetness. Dr. Wilson said, “this is how life is: sweet and sad, poured from the same vessel in equal measure.”
A. And it is changeable.
B. But it is not that bad.
C. But embracing that sadness is important.
D. More recently, it’s become a time to appreciate our surroundings.
E. Fall also brings with it bright, brisk days, pumpkin patches and cozy sweaters.
F. It is no wonder that the season has so many celebrations to attempt to keep our spirits up.
G. Another strategy experts suggest for soothing anxiety is to step back and simply observe the world around you.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. It was a dry season that would bankrupt several farmers before it was through. Every day, my husband and his brothers would go about the tiring process of trying to get water to the farm. If we didn't see some rain soon, we would lose everything.
It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have seen with my own eyes. I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He wasn’t walking with the usual carefree abandon of a youth but with a serious purpose. I could only see his back. He was obviously walking with a great effort trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever task he had been doing was completed.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful stride(阔步)toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking carefully to the woods, and then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, very careful not to spill the water he held. Maybe two or three tablespoons were held in his tiny hands. I sneaked closer as he went into the wood. Branches and thorns(刺) slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw an amazing sight. A mother deer with a huge pair of deer horns appeared in front of him, with a baby fawn(幼鹿) lying on the dry ground. I almost screamed to get him away.

One possible version:
However, Billy walked right up to them. Cautiously, he knelt down by the weak baby fawn, seemingly familiar with the two creatures. The fawn, suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion lifted its head up with great efforts and eagerly lapped up the water cupped in my beautiful boy’s hands. The mother deer stood by as if in guard. Not until the fawn licked the last drip of water did Billy move a little bit. I contained myself not to make a slightest sound, for fear of scaring them. (81)
I witnessed the most beautiful heart working hard to save a life. With the water gone, Billy jumped to his feet and met my smiling eyes. Before he tried to explain, I strode to him and held him tight. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops and more drops and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride. The rain that came that day was a miracle, saving our farm, just like my boy saved a life. (87)

根据最后一段“As a result of substantial winter rockfall and landslides, trail (步道) repair work on the North Kaibab Trail continues. (由于冬季大量的岩崩和山体滑坡,北凯巴布步道的道路修复工作仍在继续)”可知,北凯巴布步道的修复工作仍在继续。故选C。
【23题详解】
推理判断题。根据Grand Canyon, Ariz下“The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park will open as scheduled, on June 2, with limited visitor services and water conservation measures due to a break in the North Rim water pipeline. (大峡谷国家公园北缘将于6月2日如期开放,但由于北缘输水管道断裂,游客服务受到限制,并采取了节约用水的措施)”及全文内容可知,本文写作目的是为了告诉游客美国大峡谷公园景点北缘因山体滑坡而对游览的时间和路线做出的调整。故选B。
B
C 25. A 26. A 27. C
根据考查词汇所在句子“My village was archaic, dying cabins housing dying farmers with dying traditions.(我的村庄很古老,垂死的小屋住着垂死的农民,他们的传统已经消亡。)”
根据文章第三段中的“Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter. Liberated from the restrictions of society, we would bound into the woods, deeper and deeper until we found a lake which, with a wild yell, we would jump into all at once.(树木和山脉构成了我们的游乐场,打架就像突然的笑声一样容易爆发。从社会的束缚中解放出来,我们会跳进树林里,越陷越深,直到发现一个湖,我们会大叫一声,立刻跳进湖里。)”,可知,之所以作者认为自己和其他孩子都是野孩子,是因为他们在树林里疯狂地玩耍。故选A。
根据文章第四至六段的“Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams broke into the outcry from birds. The shock of cold water against sweating skin would wake every nerve in my body and my bare feet would hit the sinking muddy bottom. As we submerged(淹没), time would suspend, movements slowing as bubbles rose around us.(水面闪闪发光,我们的尖叫声被鸟儿的叫声打断了。冷水对着出汗的皮肤的冲击会唤醒我身体的每一根神经,我的光脚会撞到下沉的泥泞的底部。当我们潜入水中时,时间会停止,随着我们周围的气泡上升,运动变慢。)”和“I was drowning. I was living. I was living. I was drowning.(我快淹死了。我还活着。我还活着。我快淹死了。)”以及“For timelessness or a second (both felt the same), we would suspend, curl up, and then be forced back out into breathing air.(在一段时间或一秒钟内(两者的感觉都是一样的),我们会暂停,蜷缩起来,然后被迫重新呼吸空气。)” 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“We should have known that it wouldn’t last forever. Yet, even under the best circumstances, there’s something so tragic about growing up: to have your perspective on the people and life around you change;to always struggle to reach a mirror only to find yourself tall enough to see your reflection one day. And find, a different person staring back out at you.(我们早该知道这不会永远持续下去。然而,即使在最好的情况下,成长也有一些悲剧:你对周围人和生活的看法发生了变化;你总是挣扎着去拿镜子,却发现自己已经足够高,有一天可以看到自己的倒影。然后发现,另一个人正盯着你。)”,可知,作者在最后一段似乎传达了“成长常常伴随着对过去的悲伤告别。”故选C。

【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Its expansion to the degree needed to power a growing population at a decent standard of living would itself require a shocking investment in fossil (化石) fuels. It also requires massive mining operations, many of which take place on the backs of low-wage workers in Africa where it is driving destruction of rainforests critical to the survival of great apes.(它的扩张要达到为不断增长的人口提供体面生活所需的程度,本身就需要对化石燃料(化石)进行惊人的投资。它还需要大规模的采矿作业,其中许多是在非洲的低工资工人的支持下进行的,这正在破坏对类人猿生存至关重要的热带雨林。)”可知,“绿色”技术的扩张需要对化石燃料进行大量投资,大规模的采矿作业,破坏了对类人猿生存至关重要的热带雨林,由此可知,“绿色”技术被质疑的原因是它破坏了生态环境。故选A项。
根据全文内容及最后一段中“In fact, declining birth rates should be cause for celebration as they signify advances in gender equality and a reduced burden on Earth.(事实上,出生率下降应该是值得庆祝的,因为它们标志着性别平等的进步和地球负担的减轻)”可知,本文主要讨论了出生率下降的积极意义,所以D选项“出生率下降:一个充满希望的迹象”概括全文主题,适合作为最佳标题。故选D项。

A number of approaches are therefore being taken to produce flexible batteries, among which the most promising, though, are water-based batteries inspired by the way an electric eel (鳗) stores its charge.
根据第三段中“These are made from hydrogels (水凝胶) that consist of organic polymers that contain over 60% water. Whereas most batteries experience a loss of conductivity if the material is bent or stretched, a jelly battery can be stretched up to one-and-a-half times its length with no power loss. (由含有超过60%水分的有机聚合物组成。如果材料弯曲或拉伸,大多数电池会失去导电性,而果冻电池可以拉伸到其长度的一倍半,而不会损失电量。)”可知,果冻电池柔软有弹性是因为它是由60%水分的有机聚合物组成,也就是说果冻电池的成分使指柔软有弹性,故选A项。
【34题详解】

W: Hey, Bill. Did it feel great to travel somewhere warm
M: Oh, yes. I love New Year’s celebrations in the city, but visiting small island beaches was perfect.
W: That sounds great. I left town to go skiing — the weather in the mountains was so snowy and cold!
Text 2
M: To ensure your safety, please wear protective equipment when riding bicycles in this park.
W: You’re right. I’ll put on something to protect my head and knees.
Text 3
W: I miss the food in my hometown. My mom cooks noodles and dumplings very well.
M: There are some pretty good restaurants in Chinatown. Why don’t we try the dishes there
W: Good idea! I’ll book a table! Let’s go now!
Text 4
W: Oh, my. I almost made you drop your bags! I didn’t see you turning the corner — I’m so sorry for crashing into you!
M: That’s all right, Miss. Accidents happen. At least no one is hurt!
Text 5
W: Tim, never consider anyone as an enemy. Whether they’re your friends, family or even strangers, forgiving others is always better.
M: That’s a great lesson. I first learned this at my job. I learned never to hold things against co-workers.
W: Exactly!
Text 6
M: This afternoon, I must get to Jacob’s house on 14th Street in the city center. But I don’t want to drive in the rush hour.
W: Oh, it’s easy! Go to the 96th Street station and take the subway downtown. You’ll arrive at the 14th Street station in 20 minutes. And you won’t even have to change to a bus.
M: That’s the new subway line.
W: Indeed. Was Jacob your friend from school
M: Yes. He was my classmate in high school. Now, he wants to tell me about his new job.
W: Cool. Have fun!
Text 7

W: Of course, sir. We have a wide range of clothing for you to choose from.
M: OK. I’ve heard your clothing store is the best one in the neighborhood!
W: We’ve been in business for only one year. We can’t serve as many customers as large companies, but we care more about individual needs.
M: Great. I’m invited to my younger brother’s wedding. And I’ll be on stage at the party.
W: I see — this suit looks perfect. But it could take a week to make some changes to fit you.
M: That’s fine. They are going to have the wedding in a month, so I’ll have plenty of time.
Text 8
M: Good morning, madam. I have an interview at 9:00 a.m. with Ms. Thompson.
W: Oh, yes. She’s the hiring manager for our company. I’ll call you into her office when she comes back a few minutes later. For now, please wait in this seating area.
M: Great, thanks. By the way, is there any person like me interviewed for this position today
W: Not really. Our company carefully chooses new staff members to interview. We look closely at their education and work history.
M: I only worked in clothing stores and restaurants when I was in college. This would be my first job after graduation and my first position at an electronics company. Would this be an issue
W: Oh, no. We accept many recent graduates. Unfortunately, the other secretaries and I can’t offer much more specific information on this subject.
M: I see. Thanks for your advice.
Text 9
M: Thanks for accepting the invitation to my sister’s birthday party, Melissa. Would you like to go and wish her a happy birthday

M: Relax. She has heard a lot about you from me. She’s really looking forward to seeing you.
W: Oh, that’s so sweet.
M: Let me introduce you to everyone first. Then I’ll show you around the room and we’ll get some food.
W: Great. So, could you introduce me to your sister first

W: I hope so.
M: Trust me. By far, the best thing about this party is the people here. Everyone is so nice and friendly!

Since the summer, we all have been focusing our efforts on the goal of creating three new products by Chinese New Year. Now, it’s just before Christmas, and we’ve already achieved this goal. So, as this office’s general manager, I’d like to congratulate you all first.
Second, I’ve communicated with the board members over the last few days, and we have decided that everyone will be going home with a holiday gift. I still remember the extra vacation days we got last year. But by the end of today, everyone will receive a significant holiday bonus. It will be twice as much as last year. We all should be proud of our product development and sales figures. This extra payment is given for your excellent performance. But more than the money, my greatest honor was watching everyone work well together as a team.
So, before we all leave for the day, our sales and marketing director will say a few words. Please, put your hands together for her…
