Recently, a pack of thin legged robotic dogs are working as trash carriers on the narrow and steep (陡峭的) paths of Mount Tai. “Please don’t litter! I work very hard every day and I don’t want to be too tired,” one robot dog says in a short video. The video has received millions of likes online.
Keeping Mount Tai clean is a big headache. In 2023, there were over 8.6 million visitors and they left nearly 24,000 tons of rubbish behind. As big machines couldn’t be used there, the area has depended on porters (挑夫), also known as tiaoshangong in Chinese, to carry trash up and down the mountain on foot. However, fewer people are willing to work as porters now.
The robotic dogs, also called Unitree B2, are produced by Unitree Robotics, a Chinese technology company in Hangzhou. “The robots can carry up to 120 kilograms and can climb for four to six hours on a single charge (充电)”, said Ma, a manager of Mount Tai. In a recent test run, a robotic dog finished the 9.5 kilometer route in just two hours, about twice the speed of a human climber. The robot has a built-in camera and can monitor things around so that it won’t knock into tourists.
People had different views on the invention. Some gave a thumb-up to the use of new technology. Others worried that porters would lose their jobs. And a few jokingly asked if the dogs could also carry tourists up the mountain. “Robotic dogs are of great help but they cannot fully replace humans,” Ma said.

The Chinese-made aircraft (国产飞机) are playing an important role in protecting the country’s green mountains. Many models of newly developed large unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) (无人机) are showing their ability to protect the environment. In recent years, they have been used to put out forest fires and do other dangerous tasks (任务).
In mid-March 2024, Yajiang County in Sichuan Province faced a challenging spring when a serious forest fire happened. However, the situation changed quickly as the new aircraft were used to support firefighting (消防). The aircraft played a key role in finding what causes the fire and understanding its size. The UAVs gave real-time heat pictures and maps, helping plan the firefighting efforts. At the same time, the fixed-wing (固定翼) aircraft dropped water on certain areas. It stopped the fire and saved more of the forest. This was the first time that China had used large UAVs to carry out some tasks, like putting out forest fires. The move showed the advantages (优点) of these new aircraft and provided a new way to stay away from disasters (灾害).

Are you surprised when you see a car without its driver running on the road In fact, these cars can be seen in some big cities like Wuhan and Shanghai in China now. We call them driverless cars. They are getting more and more popular.
Maybe you want to know why people like them. Driverless cars have some advantages. Firstly, they can make the road much safer. You know, people often feel tired while driving for too long and people are careless sometimes. Traffic accidents often happen because of these. But driverless cars never! Secondly, they can help people to save time. They can choose the right ways to save time when there is a heavy traffic. Thirdly, they can make your trip more comfortable because you needn’t drive the car. You can read a book, watch a video or enjoy the scenery (风景) out of the windows. Even you can sleep during your trip. How wonderful and amazing! Finally, driverless cars are not bad for the environment.
How do driverless cars work First, they need a lot of sensors (传感器). They get much information through the sensors such as the cameras, lidars, radars (雷达), Internet and GPS. Second, they need computers to think. When the computers get the information from the sensors, they will “think” like our brains (人脑) and make orders very quickly. The orders tell the cars what to do and how to work next. For example, when the camera in a driverless car sees a red traffic light, or the radar feels that there is a running boy in front, the computer will make the car stop at once. If the road is clear and it is time to go, the computer will tell the car to move at a right speed.
“Driverless cars can be used in many fields. For example, they can help us deliver express packages (送快递). But they are a little expensive. I hope that everyone can own a driverless car with the progress of science and technology in the future.” one of the professors from Tsinghua University said.

①Nowadays, there is more and more rubbish in the sea. And the sea environment is seriously mon ways of cleaning sea rubbish have high costs, and they may hurt fish. These problems can be successfully solved by a sea rubbish cleaning robot called Sea Sweeper 1000. It looks like a lantern fish from the outside.
②The robot fish was invented by a little inventor named Lainey and an artist named Lottie Smith. Inside, it has two “stomachs”. They are used to store, recycle and burn rubbish.
③The left stomach will be used to burn down rubbish and create energy for the robot to keep running. And the things left after burning will be divided into small parts, and then placed into the bags on the robot’s back. And the right stomach can store rubbish that can be recycled. When it gets full, rubbish will be placed in the bag in the robot’s tail. Once the bag is full, the robot will come back.
④The lantern above the robot’s head has a sensor (传感器) and a camera. The sensor helps avoid taking in fish. But if the robot does take in small fish, don’t worry. The space between its teeth is big enough for them to swim out. And the camera can send back photos to its user when there is rubbish.

As we all know, 46 They can do real people’s voices and moves and even copy their personalities (性格). But what else can they do And what can only be done by humans but not AI
47 They can be idols (偶像), vloggers (视频博主), reporters, and more. For example, China Daily has its own digital (数字的) reporter, Yuanxi. She can speak English and cover the wonderful world of Chinese culture. She can process (处理) data fast. This can help the newsroom work faster.
In February 2022, a Chinese tech company (科技公司) showed its first digital idol Xi Jiajia. 48 During China Fashion Week in September 2022, Xi Jiajia became famous in an online virtual fashion show (虚拟时装秀).
“Virtual idols could do something that people cannot do in the real world, such as time travel,” said Liu Qian. 49 They can appear to be in different places and from different times in history.
But AI humans have their disadvantages (劣势). Take Yuanxi as an example, she still doesn’t have much human touch or high EQs. 50 What’s more, virtual people can’t team up and communicate with others in real time.
As Yuanxi wrote, “Virtual employees (员工) show the power of AI but they are not a replacement (代替) for traditional human employees.”
