Charles Dickens was an English writer. He is regarded as one of the finest writers in English language and the greatest novelist of the Victorian Period.
Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812. He was born to John Dickens and Elizabeth Dickens from Landport, Hampshire, England. His father was thrown in prison when he was a child. Dickens wrote 15 novels in his lifetime. He also wrote numerous short stories, essays, travelogues and plays.
Dickens had a deep-rooted concern for the poor people because of his own experiences of hardship. He was a sharp critic (批评者) of the social problems of his time. He exposed the dark side of Victorian society such as the gap between the rich and the poor. He believed in the power of good and the possibility of social reform. His characters often tried to get a better life and moral values, giving readers a sense of hope.
Charles Dickens married Catherine Dickens in 1936. On June 9, 1870, Charles Dickens died of a stroke at the age of 58.

Elephants are so different from human beings physically that we may think there would be very few similarities (相似点). Yet the more we learn about elephants, the more similarities we see.
Females stay in their family groups for their whole lives, and the males will stay in their family groups until they become teenagers. Then the males will move out and live together with other males. The calves (小象) are raised by their relatives as well as their mum, much like we used to.
One of the typical characteristics (特点) of elephants is that they seem to have strong social connections. There have been reports of elephants developing lifelong friendships with each other, and they even mourn the death of their loved ones. For example, mother elephants have been seen grieving over calves born dead, and some elephants have even been found returning to, and wandering near places where their friends and family members died.
What’s amazing is that elephants always stay in touch in their special way. They will communicate with each other by making sounds, which are within human hearing range. But we know that they also use a very low-frequency (低频的) sound that can travel a long distance. We believe that when elephants separate from each other in groups, they will keep in touch with each other using low-frequency sound, finally meeting back up together again.
Elephants have a unique social structure that seems like our own. They face many of the struggles of co-existence and emotional problems as we do. With less than 650,000 elephants remaining on the planet, they are in real danger of extinction, and it’s our job to protect them.

At the ninth China Collegiate Computing Contest Mobile Application Innovation Contest held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, in November, a sign language learning app named ArtfulSign stood out as the top winner.
Developed by three hearing-impaired (听力受损的) students from Beijing Union University, the app is designed to help hearing individuals learn sign language to communicate with those who have hearing loss. The most notable feature of ArtfulSign is its use of AI models in sign language teaching. Each sign language word is shown through real-person video examples. After learning, users can activate the camera, and the app will recognize and assess the accuracy (准确性) of their sign language gestures.
Wang majors in computer science and technology and mostly responsible for ArtfulSign’s design and front-end development. According to him, ArtfulSign has designed the learning process in the form of answering questions and unlocking maps, which not only adds fun but also better matches each user’s individual progress and level. Tan uses his gift in visual communication to handle the user interface and experience design. The responsibility of forming the team and planning the development process falls on the shoulders of team leader Zhao, a second-year graduate student in software engineering. She also oversees the most difficult and time-consuming part of the team’s work—building and training the sign language AI recognition model.
On Nov 19, after the announcement of the winners, Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook posted a message on Sina Weibo, “Wonderful to see how the students in this year’s App Contest are creating apps that make a positive impact,” he wrote. Upon seeing Cook’s post, Zhao typed the phrase “breaking the fourth wall” on her phone to describe her feelings at the time. Tan also felt it was “unreal, like a dream”, he signed. Wang, who communicates with people using a hearing aid, said he was “very excited and proud” of his app’s amazing performance.
