In this new digital era, farmers are finding ways to evolve with the times while still holding fast to their traditions.
In the quiet and excluded parts of rural China, Xiang Qing, a man born in 1990, leads a life quite unlike the bustling (熙熙攘攘的) urban existence that defines modernity. His home is Guzhang county, Xiangxi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture, which is located deep in western Hunan province. Xiang Qing and his 23-year-old nephew, Xiang Hong, jointly operate a video channel called “Shan Bai”. Through their videos, they showcase handicrafts and rural life in China, captivating (迷住) many young urban viewers.
“Life here unfolds at its own pace. We cultivate crops and vegetables and occasionally purchase meat at the market,” Xiang Qing said. “I’ve come across numerous comments from people who watch our videos while lying in bed at night after a busy day of work, finding them truly relaxing and comforting. I think it’s fantastic, and it’s in line with our initial intentions.”
Five years ago, Xiang Qing resigned from his job as a customer service representative in Shanghai and returned to his hometown in Guzhang county, embarking on (开始) a new journey as a video blogger. “Back in 2012, when I was a college student, film-making aroused my passion, and it has continued to be a profound and enduring interest,” he said.
Following in his uncle’s footsteps, Xiang Hong made the same life-altering decision. Having graduated from college last year, he also returned to his hometown in April from Changde, a city in Hunan, and ventured into the world of video production alongside his uncle.
Now their video channel Shan Bai has attracted more than 59.8 million followers. Xiang Qing conceptualizes, films, and edits the videos himself. Xiang Hong serves as the video presenter. Long Lingling, Xiang Qing’s wife, manages the day-to-day operations of the video account, and other family members also contribute to the video production process in different ways.

Blind people have long desired for brightness, but scientists don’t have the technology. To bring that one step closer to reality, Zhiyong Fan, a materials scientist of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, developed a new artificial eye recently. The device, which is about as sensitive to light and has sharper vision and a faster reaction time than a real eyeball, may outperform human eyes.
The human eye owes its wide field of view and clear eyesight to the retina (视网膜) — an area at the back of the eyeball covered in light-detecting cells. The design for a new artificial eye is based on the structure of the human eye and uses a friendly light-sensitive material. At the back of the eyeball, an artificial retina is lined with Nan scale light sensors Those sensors measure light that passes through the lens (晶状体) at the front of the eye. Wires attached to the back of the retina send signals from those sensors to the processor, similar to the way nerve networks connect the eyeball to the brain.
“In the future, we can use this to replace damaged human eyes,” says the lead designer. In theory, this artificial eye could see more clearly than the human eye, because the artificial retina contains about 460 million light sensors per square centimeter while a real retina has about 10 million light-detecting cells per square centimeter. Besides, the artificial eyeball records changes in lighting faster than human eyes can — within about 30 to 40 milliseconds, rather than 40 to 150 milliseconds. Although its 100-degree field of view isn’t as broad as the150 degrees a human eye can take in, the device can see as well as the human eye in poor light.
Hongrui Jiang, an electrical engineer at the University of Wisconsin, though, thinks engineers need a much more practical and efficient way to produce vast series of tiny wires on the back of the artificial eyeball to give it superhuman sight, which is super hard to achieve.
28.Why does Zhiyong Fan develop the artificial eye
A.To replace people’s real eyeballs. B.To gain a sharper vision.
C.To help the blind regain their eyesight. D.To help normal eyes perform better.
29.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The design of the artificial eye. B.The structure of the human eye.
C.The advantages of the artificial eye. D.The material used for the artificial eye.
30.What can we learn about the artificial eye and the human eye
A.They have the same structure.
B.The artificial eye may see more clearly.
C.The human eye sees better in weak light.
D.The artificial eye takes in a broader view.
31.Which word best describes Hongrui Jiang’s attitude to the artificial eye
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable. C.Unconcerned. D.Satisfied.

It’s been nearly two decades since the traditional clothing style Hanfu first started to reemerge in China. Since then it has gone from a small cultural movement celebrating an ancient fashion to a trend that is booming on social media, having been adopted by China’s Generation Z as a means of connecting with their past. Instead of following other cultures blindly, Generation Z now have different opinions about what trend is by promoting local culture while having an objective view of exotic cultural products.
The new tastes of Generation Z—young people born after 1995—are well represented on Bilibili. In the recent New Year’s Eve gala presented by Bilibili, it attracted more than 100 million views within 48 hours with a colourful set of programmes ranging from Peking Opera to classical Chinese cartoons. The same is also true of movie industry. Last year, for the first time, the top 10 most viewed films in China were all domestic films, while the ticket sales for imported films have dropped to only 16.28 percent.
“Generation Z grew up with the rapid development of China and under good economic conditions. With the development of the Chinese Internet industry, they have more access to diverse international information and culture, which bring them a much broader vision and makes them more open and confident in analyzing foreign culture. Apart from taking pride in China’s rapid development, this generation also pursues individuality and values devotion to the country,” Professor Zhang Yiwu said.
He also noted that the popular rock and punk culture pursued by the 70s and 80s generation is more of a challenge against real life and local culture. Some people who were born in the 1970s and 1980s did not grow up in the Internet age—they experienced the transformation of China going from poor to rich first-hand. This kind of longing and admiration of the West came from a lack of confidence.
However, Generation Z now have the confidence to look at Western culture with equal status. This kind of cultural confidence will result in China being more active and creative in its development on the international stage in the future.
32.What does the underlined word “exotic” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Foreign. B.Fashionable. C.Traditional. D.Elegant.
33.Why is Bilibili mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.To confirm the rise of new media.
B.To promote Chinese Internet industry.
C.To highlight the popularity of domestic art.
D.To show the popularity of New Year’s Eve gala.
34.What do we know about Generation Z from the passage
A.They have a stronger cultural identity.
B.They are longing for cultural diversity.
C.They have made China develop rapidly.
D.They are more fond of foreign culture.
35.What can be a suitable title for the passage
A.Confident China, Better Future
B.China’s Progress Results in Cultural Confidence
C.China’s New Generation Redefine Local Culture as Trendy
D.Hanfu Style, Connector of Ancient Fashion and Modern Trend

36 . But I thought I might be the only person left in the world who hadn’t done an eBay deal. So, I decided to try my hand at online auction (拍卖).
Buying for beginners: Sign up on www.ebay.co.uk. Most items (e.g. tables, computers, and books) ready for auction will come with a picture and a short description; others may be marked with “Buy It Now” and have a fixed price. 37 .
Process of bidding: If the item is being auctioned, you offer the highest price you are prepared to pay and eBay bids for you. The bid (投标) will be increased little by little until it goes beyond your highest bid, then you are emailed and asked if you would like to bid again. Auctions last up to 10 days and when they finish you get an email telling you whether you have won the item.
38 : Sellers decide how they would like to be paid and you need to check this before placing a bid as you might not want to post a cheque or postal orders. The easiest way is through PayPal, an online payment system that takes the money away from your credit card.
Selling is made simple: If you plan to sell on eBay, it helps to include a picture of the item. I followed my friends’ advice and put up the items I wanted to sell for a 10-day auction, starting on a Thursday. 39
40 : It’s easy to post a small item, but for big items such as the furniture is a big part of eBay and this has to be collected or sent by deliverymen.

Astronomy is the 56 (old) science known to man. Thousands of years ago, man looked at the stars and wondered 57 the heavens. But man was 58 (limit) by the six planets that he could see only with his eyes alone. The Greeks studied astronomy over 2,000 years ago. They could see the size, colour, and 59 (bright) of a star. They could see its place in the sky. They watched the stars move as the seasons changed. But the Greeks had no tools to help 60 (they) study the heavens. Each new tool added to the field of astronomy helped man reach out into space. Man didn’t know much about the moon 61 there were telescopes.
He did not know that the planet 62 (call) Saturn had rings around it. His sight was 63 weak that he could not see all the planets. In the early 1700s, people thought there were only six planets. Before the spectroscope, man did not know what kind of gases was around the sun or other 64 (star). Without the radio-telescope, we did not know that radio noises came from far in space. 67.
I was invited to a cookout on an old friend’s farm in western Washington. I parked my car outside the farm and walked past a milking house which had apparently not been used in many years. A noise at a window caught my attention, so I entered it. It was a hummingbird (蜂鸟), desperately trying to escape. She was covered in spider-webs (蛛网) and was barely able to move her wings. She ceased her struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand, I looked around to see how she had gotten in. The broken window glass was the likely answer. I stuffed a piece of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly away; she sat looking at me with her bright eyes. I removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head and wings. Still, she made no attempt to fly. Perhaps she had been struggling against the window too long and was too tired Or too thirsty
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began to move. I stopped, and she soon took wing but did not immediately fly away.
Hovering (悬停), she approached within six inches of my face. For a very long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes, turning her head from side to side. Then she flew quickly out of sight.
During the cookout, I told my hosts about the hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the window. As I was departing, my friends walked me to my car. I was standing by the car when a hummingbird flew to the center of our group and began hovering. She turned from person to person until she came to me. She again looked directly into my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone. For a moment, all were speechless. Then someone said, “She must have come to say goodbye.”

67. A few weeks later, I went to the farm again. As my car neared it my thoughts drifted back to the moment when I rescued the hummingbird from the spider’s web. I rushed back to the deserted house. It was a great comfort that the original hole in the window was nowhere to be found. Leaving the house, I couldn’t help wondering how it was getting on now. Had it managed to find its way back home, or was it still out there somewhere struggling to survive
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared. A flash of movement caught my attention. I turned around to see the same hummingbird hovering in the air. It seemed that the bird was waiting for me, its beady eyes locked on mine as if trying to convey some deep, unspoken gratitude. I felt a surge of relief and awe at the sight of this sound and grateful creature, and I knew that I would always cherish the memories we shared as I climbed into my car and drove away.

If you’ve been with us from the beginning, you’ll know that we began our tour in Amsterdam, walked our way through Germany and Austria, down into Italy, back up through Switzerland and this week we are in Paris. We won’t spend much time at the big attractions. In a tourist destination like Paris, even a new traveler knows to see the famous art museums of Paris and no one misses the Eiffel Tower. But we’re going to some of the places the average tourist misses. For instance, the best view in town may not be from the top of the Eiffel Tower, but from the top of the Montparnasse Tower. The view includes the Eiffel Tower as well as everything else. It’s cheaper and easier to get up here. We can join a ride on a public bus. I like the views from Line 63.Or we can cruise through Paris in one of their river tour boats. To cover more territory, traffic and streets for you, I ride the subway. Many European cities have subway systems, the one in Paris is really amazing. You can go anywhere in town for a reasonable price. And don’t worry, getting lost is cheap. In fact, you could stay underground all day long on one ticket about the cost of a cup of coffee.

We cultivate crops and vegetables and occasionally purchase meat at the market,’ Xiang Qing said. ‘I’ve come across numerous comments from people who watch our videos while lying in bed at night after a busy day of work, finding them truly relaxing and comforting. I think it’s fantastic, and it’s in line with our initial intentions.’(‘这里的生活以它自己的节奏展开。

由第二段“The design for a new artificial eye is based on the structure of the human eye and uses a friendly light-sensitive material. At the back of the eyeball, an artificial retina is lined with Nan scale light sensors ( 纳米级光感器). Those sensors measure light that passes through the lens (晶状体) at the front of the eye. Wires attached to the back of the retina send signals from those sensors to the processor, similar to the way nerve networks connect the eyeball to the brain.”(新型人工眼的设计基于人眼的结构,并使用了一种友好的光敏材料。 故选A项。
由第三段“In theory, this artificial eye could see more clearly than the human eye, because the artificial retina contains about 460 million light sensors per square centimeter while a real retina has about 10 million light-detecting cells per square centimeter.”(理论上,这种人造眼比人眼看得更清楚,因为人造视网膜每平方厘米包含大约 4.6 亿个光传感器,而真正的视网膜每平方厘米有大约 1000 万个光检测细胞。)
由尾段“Hongrui Jiang, an electrical engineer at the University of Wisconsin, though, thinks engineers need a much more practical and efficient way to produce vast series of tiny wires on the back of the artificial eyeball to give it superhuman sight, which is super hard to achieve.”(不过,威斯康星大学的电气工程师姜宏瑞认为,工程师们需要一种更实用、更有效的方法,在人造眼球的背面生产大量的细线,使其具有超人的视力,而这很难实现。) 故选A项。

In the recent New Year's Eve gala presented by Bilibili,it attracted more than 100 million views within 48 hours with a colorful set of programs ranging from Peking Opera to classical Chinese cartoon. The same is also true of movie industry. Last year, for the first time, the top 10 most viewed films in China were all domestic films, while the ticket sales for imported films have dropped to only 16.28 percent.”(Z一代的新口味—1995年后出生的年轻人—在Bilibili上得到了很好的体现。
根据最后一段“However, the Generation Z now have the confidence to look at Western culture with equal status. This kind of cultural confidence will result in China being more active and creative in its development on the international stage in the future.”(然而,Z一代现在有信心以平等的地位看待西方文化。 故选A项。
阅读全文以及根据第一段主旨段“Instead of following other cultures blindly,Generation Z now have different opinions about what trend is by promoting local culture while having an objective view of exotic cultural products.”(Z一代不再盲目追随其他文化,而是在客观看待异域文化产品的同时,通过弘扬本土文化,对什么是潮流有不同的看法。)
