Johnson, who likes to look up at the sky, is a volunteer advocate with DarkSky, a movement aimed at reducing light pollution and promoting responsible outdoor lighting. DarkSky is active in more than 70 countries.
Light pollution can be disastrous for wildlife and particularly for migrating(迁徙)birds. Many migratory birds are easy to be drawn to light. Once in a big city with lit up buildings, birds have trouble finding their way out again.
Johnson moved to Ridgefield years ago and loved how dark the sky was compared to living in the city. She worked with the City of Ridgefield to help ensure new house development going up followed local lighting regulations and passionately began sharing information about DarkSky at local events.
Johnson and other DarkSky volunteers and birding organizations made DarkSky's Principles of Outdoor Lighting for bird safety: Use targeted lighting; Use outdoor lighting only if needed; Turn outdoor lights to the lowest level possible; Add controlling features to your lights; Use warm-colored outdoor lights. The Bird Alliance of Oregon promotes a "Lights Out" campaign during migration seasons to raise awareness about responsible lighting. This year, Portland mayor signed a declaration setting Sept. 19-Oct.19, 2024 as "Lights Out Portland Month", encouraging residents to turn off unnecessary lights from 11 p.m. until dawn during migration periods.
All these efforts have made an impact on protecting the night sky for the health of birds and other wildlife. Johnson said proudly, "Lights may, be out during migration season, but the future for dark skies is looking up."

A. A private company. B. A charity club.
C. A public activity. D. A government agency.

An incredibly adaptive species of coral(珊瑚)discovered off the coast of Gool-boodi Island in Northeast Australia has weathered hundreds of years of coral bleaching(白化)and survived till now. What can this teach scientists about preservation
At 34 feet wide, this coral is roughly the size of a carousel. Its incredible width is a result of its hard skeleton, which is made of calcium carbonate from the surrounding seawater. Nicknamed Muga dhambi, or "big coral", it stands over 16 feet tall, making Muga dhambi the tallest coral in the Great Barrier Reef. This record-breaking coral is discovered by local citizens.
Based on the coral's size and growth rate, scientists have calculated its lifetime is about 421-438 years, meaning this ancient coral has survived as many as 80 cyclones and weathered 99 coral bleaching events. It has survived through centuries of and outlived many invasive(入侵的)species.
"It's extremely inspiring to know that these things like Muga dhambi exist, and have survived for a long time. The colony is in fairly good health with 70% of it consisting of live coral. Even as more coral cover is lost due to climate change, there is hope that adaptive species like Muga dhambi will continue to survive. Ancient colonies like the Muga dhambi offer scientists a rare opportunity to learn more about reef conditions as long as these massive corals continue to grow.
Hopefully, it helps to provide a new sense of hope for the future. There are many unexplored corners of the Great Barrier Reef, so it is possible that there are larger coral colonies waiting to be documented by local citizen scientists someday.
28. What's the purpose of Para 2
A. To raise an argument. B. To express opinions.
C. To give examples. D. To give information.
29. What helps to estimate the lifetime of Muga dhambi
A. The surrounding seawater. B. Its size and growth rate.
C. Its admirable survival skills. D. The scaring invasive species.
30. What can be used to replace the underlined word "documented"
A. Displayed. B. Recorded. C. Spread. D. Reflected.
31. Which is the suitable title for the text
A. The Great Barrier Reef Produces a Variety of Rare Corals
B. Multiple Invasive Species Surround the Great Barrier Reef
C. The Great Barrier Reef Survives Series of Coral Bleaches
D. A Centuries-Old Coral Offers Hope for the Great Barrier Reef

For business leaders, the idea of applying AI such as ChatGPT to strategic planning is mouthwatering. But how do we identify the areas where AI can boost strategic planning Can AI overcome blind spots and predict the future
Keith is CEO of Trident, a commercial agricultural company. Keith called his members for their annual strategy discussion. One step involved listing the "key strategic issues". Here's the team's list: Competition; Branch number and location; Product pricing; Profitability; Climate. While Keith was happy with the list, he recognized they had a limited perspective. As agricultural scientists, they knew their game, but they didn't know any others. Hence, Keith raised two questions: Can AI provide a non-agricultural perspective Can AI help forecast future demand for service
The first concerns a single-minded view based on the industry experience alone. Keith wanted to tap into a viewpoint outside agricultural science to produce a fresh perspective. He turned to AI for help.
AI's response contained multiple headings. Was there anything new Yes. But there were also misses. AI didn't pick up "branch number and location" and "profitability" on Keith's list. "Branch location" is a very specific issue to Trident and AI hardly knows about that. Not mentioning "profitability" was a big miss. Also, it didn't mention the critical issue of "product pricing" related to competition. AI's large language model lacks access to company-specific information, explaining some misses. To tackle this, Keith regenerated responses to see alternative answers. For instance, asking AI to simply provide 10 more ideas helped create a longer list and avoid those obvious misses.
On Keith's first question, AI had succeeded. It presented important areas that Keith's team missed: technological advancements and regulatory changes. Keith's second question proved more challenging for AI, because it is trained on historical data and cannot predict the future.
However, with clever clues, AI can provide the team with food for thought. When asked 'What will impact the future demand for our services ", the tool highlighted factors, from changing consumer preferences to global population growth. These drivers help Keith's team think more broadly about demand.
32. What does the author want to prove with Keith's company
A. AI's ability to spot different perspectives.
B. AI's function in improving production.
C. Al can contribute to strategic planning.
D. AI can boost profitability.
33. What made Keith turn to AI for help
A. Limitations of his team's fist.
B. Dream to invent new technology.
C. Uncertainty about future demand.
D. Change of the conventional pattern.
34. What is the main idea of Para 4
A. AI helped to spot new possibilities.
B. AI ignored some important parts.
C. AI created automatic alternatives.
D. AI accessed large language model.
35 What's the author's attitude towards AI's application in strategic planning
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Disapproving. D. Unclear
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Life is full of uncertainties and surprises. You often make detailed plans, but things don't always go as expected. Have you ever been in such a situation 36
The phrase "play it by ear" is not often used in a serious way. Actually the expression is all about being flexible. 37 Just like a musician playing an instrument without sheet music, you make decisions based on what you observe as things happen, rather than following a strict schedule.
The phrase has its roots in music. Musicians sometimes play a piece without looking at sheet music. Instead, they rely on their "ear" to guide them. 38 It depends on musicians' ability to listen and create music on the spot. Over time, "play it by ear" turned into a broader phrase describing the ability to adapt in non-musical, situations.
39 For social plans like a party, if you're not sure how long you want to stay at a party, you might say. Let's play it by ear and see bow the evening goes." In work meetings, you may use it to adjust strategies flexibly. And for travel plans, this phrase suggests that you'll decide on stops and activities based on what you feel like doing at the time. In each example, "play it by ear" allows for a relaxed, adaptable approach.
40 By freeing from fixed planning, you open yourselves up to a world of possibilities and handle all challenges gracefully.
A. Use the phrase carefully.
B. Don't look at sheet music.
C. This skill is known as "ear play"
D. "Play it by ear" is used in many situations.
E. In short, "play it by ear" is a crucial life strategy.
F. That's when you might decide to "play it by ear".
G. It means dealing with a situation without a fixed plan.

The sports meet took place on Saturday. Hundreds of runners and audience were on my high school campus for this huge meet. If I ran a qualifying time in this meet, I could go to Districts for a higher level race. Maybe it would be called a miracle, but that's my dream.
I warmed up, stretched, ran a few laps. And I also drank plenty of liquid so I wouldn't dehydrate(脱水). No one told me I should not have been drinking iced tea.
BANG! The gun sounded and off I ran around the track. I had a good start, and about six girls were before me. I began to move up in the pack. The first lap went well. My pace was great. Then to my horror, I realized too late I should have visited the restroom before the race began.
A painful and involuntary press took hold of my bladder(膀胱)and slowly began squeezing it. I imagined my bladder growing smaller and smaller, while its contents increased in volume. Pain shot through me with every pounding step I ran. And then the dam broke. Whispers of pain escaped my lips, and tears started flowing down my face. Somehow I managed to keep running despite my pain and embarrassment, knowing that as soon as I finished I could disappear and minimize my embarrassment further.
I passed people. Fifth, fourth, then third. Suddenly I found myself in second place! But I just wanted to get off that track as soon as possible. I had to go to the restroom first!

1.续写词数应为150左右;

A Lecture on First-aid Skills
Aimed to raise safety awareness, a lecture themed “First-aid Skills” was held at our school hall last Saturday.
It began at 8:00 and ended at 10:00, lasting two hours. An expert delivered a lecture with a video showing us how to treat burns and perform CPR to save choking victims in emergency. After that, participants were invited to do role-play games to practise first-aid skills, and the expert offered guidance on the spot.
The activity was a success and received good feedback. We realized that first-aid skills sometimes mean the difference between life and death.(95 words)
第三节(满分25分)

The finish line came in sight. I began to count the remaining meters I had to run. I just wanted to get off that track. Normally, when you finish your event, you immediately turned your mind to the results. Not me! I used my last bit of strength to dash across the finish line, off the track, and right into the bathroom. I buried my face with my hands and cried bitterly, feeling my face burning with shame. After that I went back to the field, waiting for the result. (84)
After what seemed a long time, the results were announced. I could hardly believe my ears—I came in second! Despite my physical pain and mental suffering, I'd run my best mile ever. It was the exact time I needed to qualify for the Districts meet. I was sure of it! I looked at the people cheering for me. All my suffering was worth it! Only then did I realize that miracles did happen as long as you kept going! Never before had I been so overwhelmed with such pride and excitement. I made it! (83)

W: John, what time will you be coming to my place
M: Will 8 o'clock be convenient for you
W: Yes, I guess so.

M: My cell phone is missing. I can't find it anywhere.
W: Take it easy. Maybe you left it in your office.
Text 6
M: What's that mountain to the left called
W: Mount Karen. And to the right of that with the three small points is Mount Brown. Now, if you look up straight ahead, you'll see a large eagle's nest.
M: Are there any baby birds
W: That's a good question. I haven't seen any yet, but we usually see them around this time of the year.
M: What's that lake down there
W: That's John's Lake. It's actually a man-made pond that was built over twenty years ago. Since it was built, ducks and geese have returned to the area, not too many, though.
M: Is this the highest mountain here
W: No, actually, Mount Heather, which we will be able to see in just a minute or so, is the highest.

M: Hello, Miss. Would you mind if I asked you some questions We're doing a survey about fashion, and we thought you might like to participate.
W: Why Do you like my clothes or something
M: Well, not exactly. We’re interested in talking to people who look different from the average person. And your jacket and skirt are pretty interesting, definitely not what you normally see people on this street wearing.
W: Well, I'm kind of in a hurry, so...
M: We're offering a ten-dollar Starbucks gift card, and it’ll only take five minutes of your time.
W: Oh...well, I guess I can spare a few minutes. I need some coffee anyway!
M: Great! So, why don’t you start out by telling us your name, age, and a little something about yourself
W: My name is Tiffany. I'm 28 and I play the guitar in a rock band.
M: Cool! Where do you usually get your clothes, Tiffany
W: Second-hand stores. I always get stuff there. I would never go to a department store like Macy's or a popular place like H&M. The clothes there are too expensive, and they all look the same.
M: What makes your style different
W: Well, I like bright colors that don’t necessarily go together. I like looking like a piece of modern art: I like to be seen, but that doesn’t always mean I try to look pretty.
M: I see. Now, I want you to look at some pictures of different kinds of clothing and tell me what you think...
Text 10
This mountain area is popular for its wild plants and animals, as well as its beautiful colors. In autumn, the maple trees are the most colorful trees here. During this season, the maple tree leaves change color. They change from green to yellow, red, or orange. The leaves can change quickly, and then they die and fall off the trees. So come to visit Aowanda before the leaves fall to the ground!
There are also many kinds of wild birds in Aowanda. In winter, many people come here with their spyglasses just to watch the birds. This slow but relaxing activity is called bird watching.
Kenny was going to New York on September 24th, so on 22nd, we went on a hike. On our hike, Kenny and I found a beautiful waterfall. The waterfall was clean and a nice place to rest. Kenny showed me a fun activity. He put a leaf under a piece of paper. Then he rubbed a colored pencil over the paper. It was beautiful! Try it yourself!
In spring, cherry trees show their pink flowers! What a beautiful sight! Hiking in the mountains of Aowanda is a really fun activity! You always see something new and beautiful in nature.
