第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Your pets have their own way to tell you these things:
1. Put down your phone!
Animals want our attention, and sometimes they’re quite open about asking for it. Antics (滑稽可笑的举止) are often our pets’ way of telling us to stop what we’re doing and play with them. It’s why your dog always runs after his tail and why your cat keeps rolling around.
2. Feed me.
Sure, your dog loves you, but that’s not why he’s licking (舔) your face. A baby dog learns to lick his mother’s mouth to get a little leftover (吃剩的) food, so your dog isn’t kissing you in our sense of the word. He just wants meal.
3. I’m stressed.
Cat owners also misunderstand their furry friends’ kisses. While a cat might lick you to show her love, sometimes she’ll do it to comfort (抚慰) herself. One way to tell if her licking is stress-related is whether it goes on for a long period of time. Some birds will even pull out their own feathers when they feel anxious.
4. But I do need alone time.
If your dog seems frightened (because he’s hiding, say, or breathing too loudly), but showing no obvious signs of danger, try giving him a break from people—yourself included. Even the most attention-hungry dog can benefit from having a calm space of his own to relax in, even if it’s just a wooden box.
5. A storm is coming.
When your dog rushes out suddenly, pay attention. Even if you see clear skies, your dog might be sensing air pressure changes or even smelling the coming rain. The Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour found that dogs can sense earthquakes up to 20 hours ahead of time.
21. If your cat is rolling around, what might she want to do
A. Ask for something to eat. B. Ask you to play with her.
C. Tell you to let her alone. D. Tell you a storm is coming.
22. What will a dog do if he is hungry
A. Lick your face. B. Run after his tail. C. Hide in a wooden box. D. Rush out in a sudden.
23. What can we learn from the “I’m stressed” part
A. A cat kisses you only to show her love. B. Anxious birds may pull out their feathers.
C. A cat may comfort you by licking your face. D. A frightened dog will rush out without signs.

As a resident of Hangzhou, Olympic champion gymnast Guan Chenchen is excited to see athletes from all over Asia gather in her hometown for the continent’s biggest sporting events.
The 19-year-old hopes that all the competitors will hit their targets at the Asian Games—but, most of all, enjoy the experience in one of China’s most scenic (风景优美的) cities.
“I wish the Hangzhou Asian Games great success, and I hope all the athletes can realize their dreams in Hangzhou,” said Guan, who is now studying at Zhejiang University after retiring from the national team.
Guan became well-known in China after winning the women’s balance beam (平衡木) gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, but in 2022 left the national team to attend university. Although training was tough back then, Guan admits she often misses her former life.
Guan never competed at the Asian Games as an athlete, but finally got the chance to take part this year—as one of the torchbearers (火炬手).
“I’m so happy and proud to take part in the event in this way. This is also great recognition for me,” Guan told China Daily.
Guan was born in Jingzhou, Hubei Province, but now considers Hangzhou her hometown. After training in the Zhejiang capital for years, she finally became a resident and university student there.
“It’s a totally new experience in university and I have more time to explore new things, especially the city of Hangzhou,” Guan added.
Guan plans to keep a close eye on the artistic gymnastics competitions, which begin on Sunday, hoping, of course, for home glory.
“I keep close contact with my former teammates and some younger athletes. I know how hard they have trained for the Games, and I always send them messages of encouragement.” said Guan.
“I’m also interested in events like diving, swimming, gymnastics, table tennis and badminton. I really like swimmer Wang Shun and diver Quan Hongchan. I wish all of them the best of luck at the Asian Games,” she said.
“Sports and artistic gymnastics have taught me a lot. I have learned how to be independent (独立的) and how to become a better person—more responsible and more strong-willed,” she said. “I hope more people can join us.”
24. What is Guan Chenchen now
A. A diver who took part in the Tokyo Olympics.
B. A gymnast who is serving in the national team.
C. A university student who is studying in Hangzhou.
D. An athlete who competed at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
25. What did Guan do in 2022
A. She took part in a torch relay. B. She won an Olympic gold medal.
C. She retired from the national team. D. She moved from Hubei Province to Hangzhou.
26. What can we learn about Guan Chenchen
A. She has been an athlete at Asian Games.
B. Though she was born in Jingzhou, she lives in Hangzhou now.
C. Of all the Chinese athletes she likes Quan Hongchan the best.
D. She often misses her former life because university life is so boring.
27. Which of the following is not mentioned when Guan talks about what sports have taught her
A. Kindness. B. Determination. C. Responsibility. D. Independence.
C
Between 1998 and 2017, landslides and mudslides affected nearly five million people worldwide and took the lives of more than 18,000. In contrast, wildfires and volcanic activity killed 2,400. In the U.S. alone, slides kill 25 to 50 people every year. Yet we don’t hear very much about dangerous slides. Tornadoes, volcanoes, wildfires and hurricanes get more attention. They get more scientific attention, too.
The U.S. Geological Survey has a landslide research program, but most universities don’t. American research universities generally avoid training students to do this type of work.
One reason for this lack of research is money. U.S. federal funds for biomedical research rose to more than $25 billion a year between 1990 and 2000 and have stayed high.
On the other hand, funding for everything else—physics, environmental sciences, other life sciences, mathematics and even computer science—has remained mostly flat (没有变化的). Environmental science regularly has received less than $5 billion a year.
Another problem is that slides are hard to study. The basic idea is simple: A hillside becomes weak when the force of gravity (地心力) becomes stronger than the forces holding it together. But because rocks and soils are highly changeable, telling when a particular hill will give way is almost impossible. It’s hard to publish unclear results, so scientists may choose other research topics that seem more promising.
Scientists also like to accept things they find interesting, and slides appear to fall short. Many researchers think of their work as a kind of detective story, where “interesting” means understanding a hidden process. But slides aren’t hidden. They happen quite clearly on the surface, and the processes are in some ways obvious.
I don’t blame scientists for wanting to study things they find fascinating. A lot of good work has been driven by mystery (神秘事物). But researchers have to find a way to balance love of mystery with a need to solve pressing problems such as the slippery ground under our feet.
28. What do we know about landslides and mudslides
A. They are too simple for universities to study.
B. They draw more attention time and time again.
C. They cost the U. S. government too much money.
D. They killed more people than wildfires and volcanoes.
29. Which of the following has received the most money from the U.S. government
A. Biochemical research. B. Computer science.
C. Environmental science. D. Physics and maths.
30. What does the underlined words in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Slide research is just like a detective story.
B. Slide research doesn’t seem to last a long time.
C. Slides are interesting enough to be researched for long.
D. Slides don’t seem to be interesting enough to scientists.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Dangerous Ground Under Our Feet B. The Disasters That Kill the Most People
C. The Hidden Force Lying Under the Ground D. The Disasters Scientists Pay Little Attention to
D
Researchers from the University of Western Australia recently studied 3,000 middle and high school students. Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in, fly-out” parents might affect the health of their children.
A higher percentage of teenagers who experienced the long-term absence (缺席) of a parent had more emotional or behavioral problems than those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research that found a high percentage of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school.
Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant.
Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV. They enjoy each other’s company without the need to talk. Another friend usually accepts his daughter’s invitation to work or read nearby while she sits and does her homework. Perhaps, that, at least for some families, is the best way for a teenager and their parents to stay close.
In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world. Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while going on with their own activities. Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom.
A new school year is at hand, so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady (稳定的) presence will give them a great day.
32. Why did the researcher study the 3,000 students
A. To find out how many of them lived with only one parent.
B. To find out how the parents’ absence affected the children.
C. To find out what jobs their parents were interested in doing.
D. To find out whether they helped their parents do housework.
33. What might be the result due to the long absence of parents
A. Helping the children to be more independent. B. Encouraging the children to enjoy quietness.
C. Causing emotional problems to their children. D. Inspiring the children to stay closer to them.
34. What kind of parents can be called “potted plant” parents
A. Those who stay with their children and teach them gardening.
B. Those who stay away from their children and give them freedom.
C. Those who stay close to their children and keep talking with them.
D. Those who stay with their children and keep silent most of the time.
35. What is the kids’ attitude towards freedom given by their parents
A. Positive. B. Critical. C. Disappointed. D. Disagreeable.

Do You Have to Exercise to Lose Weight
Many factors (因索) influence when and how a person loses weight. To lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you take in daily. 36 However, exercising or taking part in other physical activities will help you burn more calories. It’s also important to always ask your doctor about your choices and what methods will be most helpful for your body. Some medical conditions require extra considerations.
37 Genetics (遗传学) also plays a factor in how successful an individual’s diet and exercise plan is. In one study, researchers discovered that genes could account for up to 80% of a person’s tendency (倾向) to be overweight. 38
Eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise are important to maintain your health and wellness. 39 The latter reduces risks of having heart disease, cancer and Type 2 diabetes (糖尿病).
While exercising is great for your health, it’s not always a choice for everyone. 40 Gym memberships can also be costly and some people just simply don’t have the time they need to dedicate (把……奉献给) to a regular fitness routine (常规). You may have a hard time losing weight quickly and safely without exercise, but it is possible.
A. You can lose weight by eating less without exercise.
B. Some kinds of nutrients prove to contribute to mental health.
C. However, diet and exercise doesn’t always ensure weight loss.
D. It is unbelievable that some people eat much but still keep slim.
E. Some people find exercising challenging due to a lack of interest in it.
F. Getting the right nutrients (营养物) in your body fuels your cells and helps you feel better.
G. Other findings show that genes are helpful for determining a person’s ability to build muscle mass (肌肉量).

Tom was an ordinary high school student with great potential. However, ever since he got his hands on a state-of-the-art (最先进的) smartphone, his life began to look like a mess. What began as a casual interest in mobile games and social media soon turned into a full-blown addiction (上瘾). He would spend hours on end, eyes glued (粘) to the screen, unaware of the world around him.
In class, instead of paying attention to the teachers’ lectures, he would hide his phone under the desk, absorbed in texting his online friends or watching entertaining videos. His homework was either carelessly done or left unfinished. His grades, which had been always above average, started to fall quickly. His teachers noticed the change and repeatedly reminded him, but he was too deep in the addiction to pay attention to their warnings.
At home, the situation was no better. Family dinners were disturbed (打扰;干扰) by his constant phone-checking. He locked himself in his room, preferring online strangers to that of his own family. His parents were deeply concerned and tried various methods to wean (使……戒掉) him off the phone. They limited his screen time, hid the device, and even engaged (忙于,从事于) in long. heart-to-heart conversations with him about the importance of focus and self-control. But each time, Tom would find a way to get back to his phone.
One day, Tom’s school announced a scholarship (奖学金) opportunity for students with outstanding academic performance. This was a dream for Tom, as it could open doors to a well-known university and a bright future. But as he looked at his recent report cards filled with disappointing grades and thought about his phone-addicted habits, he felt disappointed. It was then that he realized how terrible the situation was and decided to take measures to overcome his addiction and lead a normal life.
