The Komodo Dragon pepper is a fiery chili hailing from the UK. It’s renowned for its extreme heat between 1.4 million to 2.2 million SHU. The heat of the Komodo Dragon pepper is not immediate but builds up for 10 seconds before it unleashes its full potential.
Trinidad Moruga Scorpion
The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion originates (起源于) from island country Trinidad and Tobago. Its heat measures from 1.2 to 2 million SHU. And it looks strange, with its scorpion (蝎子) -like stinger (刺) tail. This fiery pepper was even recognized as the world’s hottest pepper by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2012.
7 Pot Douglah
The 7 Pot Douglah also originates from Trinidad and Tobago, ranging from 923,889 to 1,853,986 SHU. The pepper gets its name from the local belief and fact that one pod (豆荚) is enough to cook seven pots of stew (菜肴). Its dark brown color gives it a unique appearance among chili peppers.

Grady Ferranti, a middle school student from La Porte, Texas, wanted to play in the coming Youth World Series Baseball Tournaments (联赛) with his teammates. Their team would be travelling to Dallas and to College Station to compete.

A teammate’s mother heard about what Grady was doing and stopped by to bring him a few extra boxes of water. A person who passed by noticed the teen selling waters and tamales to play baseball. He shared a photo of Grady online, and it got a lot of attention. “This boy is selling water to go to World Series Baseball! Go Grady Ferranti! Corner of Spencer and Underwood ...” the post read.
Many in Grady’s community saw the post and drove over to the street corner, and bought everything that he had to sell. Many encouraged him. “You are doing a really good job. You are going places,” one customer told him. A teacher of Grady’s also showed up to support his student.

The messages always start with something like, “Hey, I’m so sorry but...” Something has suddenly come up—a terrible headache or a pet cat having a problem. The person I have made plans with isn’t going to make it. At this point I’m usually dressed, about to walk out the door, or even on my way. However, I usually don’t care about it. I have to cancel (取消) plans sometimes, too.
But over the past year, my friends and I have started to realize that people are flaking out more often. When people flake out—cancel the plan at the last minute or simply don’t show, the first question that appears in our brain is “Why ” or “Is something bigger really happening ”
Think of that person in your friend group who always can’t arrive on time. That may be more common among some personality types. For these people, they seem to have little concern for how other people feel. Another type is what psychologists (心理学家) call conscientiousness or responsibility. People who have no conscientiousness are bad at planning things or don’t follow through—in other words, flake out.
Flaking out has got more common in the last decade. Research shows it’s just easier to flake out in the age of technology. Distance can allow people to lie to others. When you don’t want to follow the plan, it’s easier to send a message to someone to cancel the plan than to tell them over the phone. Being flaked out on in this way can make you feel that they are treating you as if you didn’t have thoughts or feelings. So next time someone flakes out by sending you a text message, you can turn to Gray, a psychology professor at the University of North Carolina, who has something to share with you to help you deal with the situation.

If you sit at a beach and look at the stars, you can see the sky suddenly light up and then the water in the sea turn a beautiful, electric blue! What you are seeing is a natural phenomenon (现象) known as bioluminescence (生物发光). Bioluminescence is the natural production of light by some animals. Trying to catch this phenomenon has in fact become a tourist attraction in places like New Zealand.
Bioluminescence is produced by specific species of fish, squid, jellyfish, as well as fireflies. The light is caused by a chemical reaction (化学反应) within an animal’s body. Animals can choose the brightness and the color of the light depending on whether they are running away from those trying to eat them, attracting a possible mate, or looking for food. The colors are usually a bright blue or green—this is because colors that have shorter wavelengths (波长) such as blue and green travel easily through the water.
In the waters off the coast of New Zealand, plankton (浮游生物) produces neon-blue when it notices the coming of smaller fish that eat it. Its light causes the waves to shine, the water to flash, and the fish to swim away as they swim through the ocean.
It is important to research before visiting as bioluminescence cannot always be seen. The animals have a built-in sense of time that allows them to only shine in darkness. Also, wet weather increases the chance of bioluminescence taking place, as the water from the cloud provides something that makes bioluminescence to appear. On the other hand, too much wind can cause the animals to swim down deeper into water and swim away in different directions.
Bioluminescent waves are truly one of the most unique and beautiful sights to see. They help us remember that there are many kinds of animals living on our planet and that we should protect them for future generations.

The library was first designed by Colin St. John Wilson, and opened its door to the public in 1997. As you can see, the size is large and the rooms below the ground have 746 kilometers of shelves. The total floor space is 112,000 square meters and it has 1,000 staff members in the building. It houses many important collections of books about every country, and those books cover almost 3,000 years. The library isn’t a public library and you can’t borrow any books, although most of those books are bought by the government.
