Life had always been about action for former teacher Billy Keenan, who had served in the Army before. He mastered musical instruments including the flute, guitar, bass guitar and piano. As a competitive triathlete and surfer, he completed numerous 5K, 10K and half-marathon runs. “I was at the peak of my powers,” he said.
But on Sept. 14, 2013, his life changed in an instant while surfing at the Jersey Shore. “I rode that wave, fell off my board, hit my head on the ocean floor,” Keenan said. “Everything faded to black.” Keenan woke up in a hospital room two and a half weeks later. He had been paralyzed (瘫痪的) from the shoulders down and the medical team didn’t expect him to regain independent breathing.
Keenan called it one of the worst days of his life, saying it was “a lot of darkness.” When a parent of a former student visited him at the hospital, they handed him the phone. It was New York Police Department Detective Steven McDonald, who survived a shooting in 1986. He eventually forgave his attacker. But he too was paralyzed. He became a public speaker, preaching the importance of forgiveness.
That day, he had advice for Keenan. At a recent talk at Berkeley College, Keenan recalled what McDonald had told him. “The only reason you survive is when you’re better, when you’re stronger, when your rehab is over, you’re going to come back and contribute in a significant way,” he said. “Don’t ever forget that in the end, there will be life.”
Looking back on his life, Keenan realized he had been accustomed to what he called “deliberate discomfort.” Drawing on his own faith and that reminder from McDonald, Keenan overcame the odds. Four months after his accident, he was able to breathe on his own again.
In 2015, Keenan went back to teaching, but later retired. When McDonald died in January 2017, Keenan decided to start helping others by becoming a motivational speaker. He published an autobiography in 2023 — “The Road to Resilience: The Billy Keenan Story” — and is already working on his next book, a new coming-of-age story called “I Am Iron Man.”
4. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To introduce Keenan’s basic situations before injury.
B. To make a contrast to indicate Keenan’s later terrible situation.
C To inform the readers that Keenan stood out with talent and skill.
D. To indicate why Keenan was eventually injured.
5. What do we know about Keenan after his injury
A. He was paralyzed all over his body.
B. He came back to consciousness after three weeks.
C. He was expected to breathe independently soon by his medical team.
D. He had used to accept paralysis and sufferings to be his fate.
6. What does the underlined word “rehab” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A Regret. B. Reflection.
C. Recovery. D. Rescue.
7. What message is mainly conveyed by Keenan’s story
A. Life is never easy for those who dream.
B. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
C. Helping others is the way we help ourselves.
D. Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.

The world’s largest iceberg is on the move again, drifting through the Southern Ocean after months stuck spinning on the same spot, scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have said.
Spanning an area of 3,672 square kilometers when measured in August — slightly bigger than Rhode Island — the A23a iceberg has been carefully tracked by scientists ever since it calved from the Filchner-Ronne ice shelf in 1986. It remained grounded on the Antarctic’s Weddell Sea floor for more than 30 years, probably until it shrank just enough to loosen its grasp on the seafloor. Then, the iceberg was carried away by ocean currents before it became stuck again in a Taylor column — the name given to a spinning vortex (涡流) of water caused by ocean currents hitting an underwater mountain.
Now that the iceberg has broken free, scientists expect it will continue drifting along the ocean currents toward warmer water and the remote island of South Georgia, where it is likely to break up and eventually melt, BAS said in a statement published Friday.
While this particular iceberg probably broke away as part of the natural growth cycle of the ice shelf and won’t contribute to rising sea levels, climate change is driving worrying changes in this vast, isolated continent, with potentially devastating consequences for global sea level rise.
Throughout the iceberg’s journey, scientists have studied its erosion and the ways sea ice can influence global ocean cycles of carbon and nutrients.
“We know that these giant icebergs can provide nutrients to the waters they pass through, creating thriving (繁荣的) ecosystems in otherwise less productive areas,” said Laura Taylor, a biogeochemist who collected samples from the water around the iceberg. “What we don’t know is what difference particular icebergs, their scale, and their origins can make to that process.” “We took samples of ocean surface waters behind, immediately close to, and ahead of the iceberg’s route. They should help us determine what life could form around A23a and how it impacts carbon in the ocean and its balance with the atmosphere.”
8 What is the current status of the A23a iceberg
A. It keeps still in the Weddell Sea.
B. It is melting rapidly near South Georgia.
C. It is floating through the Southern Ocean.
D. It is stuck again in a Taylor column.
9. What probably caused the A23a iceberg to break loose from the seafloor
A. A strong spinning vortex.
B. The calving from ice shelf.
C. The melting of the iceberg.
D. The currents’ collision with sea mountains.
10. What might be the focus of the later study according to Laura Taylor
A. How the A23a influences the creation of thriving ecosystems.
B. Whether the A23a will cause rising sea levels.
C. How the A23a affects global ocean cycles of carbon and nutrients.
D. How the A23a impacts the carbon in the atmosphere.
11. Which of the following might be the most suitable title
A. What A23a will bring us after breaking free again.
B. BAS is tracking the largest iceberg, A23a
C. Moving A23a: Rising sea levels or thriving ecosystems
D. World’s biggest iceberg, A23a, is on the move again
D
Fancy letting a machine mediate (调解) your argument It could be the latest application for AI as researchers reveal its mysterious recipe for finding common ground in culture war conflicts.
Scientists at Google’s DeepMind project designed what they call the Habermas Machine, a large language AI inspired by German philosopher Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative action — the idea that common understanding fosters cooperation. It works by taking differing written views on a contentious (争议的) topic and coming up with a set of statements designed to keep everyone happy.
Researchers found that the machine’s musings (想法) were preferred 56% of the time compared to statements produced by human mediators. Participants also found the AI response to be more logical and informative. Study co-author Prof Chris Summerfield, from the University of Oxford, said: “Helping people find agreement is a new frontier for AI. In the event, we found that it was not only as good as but better than humans trying to do the same job.”
Summerfield believes the process of interacting through the AI model helps overcome the drawbacks of traditional debating chambers such as public meetings and social media. “People can venture these private beliefs,” he explained. “They’re not put in the position where they have to try and look clever or feel like they have to win an argument irrespective of what they really think. “We were amazed at how articulate people were. They were sensible and moderate. I bet that what happens on Twitter/X, for example, is that the process lends itself to digital preening (得意).”
Part of the model’s success, he says, lies in its determination to give special weight to disagreeing opinion. Rather than siding with the majority, it allowed minority voices to feel heard. “A lot of policymaking is about finding good compromises, right ” he says. “And you can only fit so many people around the table. If you want a very inclusive process, then you need lots of people to participate. I would love to see this tool used to give us all a better opinion of what people think about everything, which I think would probably — on balance — be a good thing.”
12. What is theoretical basis for the Habermas Machine
A. Mutual trust originates from cooperation.
B. Finding common ground is equal to settling conflicts.
C. Resolving disagreements helps win argument.
D. Shared agreement promotes cooperation.
13. Which might be the disadvantage of traditional mediation
A. Failing to show cleverness.
B. Strong desire to win regardless of true thoughts.
C. Being too casual to share secret thoughts.
D. Making people extreme and unreasonable.
14. Which of the following helps the success of the Habermas Machine
A. Supporting the beliefs of the majority.
B. Logical response with useful information.
C. Allowing the majority voices to be heard.
D. Completely ignoring disagreeing ideas.
15. What does Summerfield suggest about the Habermas Machine
A. Applying it to more situations.
B. Involving more people in the research.
C. Finding good compromises for it.
D. Offering a better opinion of its process.

Come up with a creative compromise
If your kid is bored, could you take a break or cut back on the amount they’re engaging in the activity Then have a conversation with your child about what it means to have made a commitment. The market was bustling with activity, and all the businesses were decorated with colorful lights, creating a festive atmosphere.
As Johnny and his father walked through the market they were surrounded by the sounds of vendors calling out their wares, the laughter of children, and the clatter of shopping carts. The air was filled with the scent of freshly cooked food and the bright lights of the decorations. Johnny’s eyes widened in wonder as he took in the sights and sounds of the bustling market.
While wandering through the market, Johnny’s attention was drawn to a shop with a large number of caged birds. The birds were constantly slamming their beaks against the cage in a desperate attempt to escape. Many of them were dripping with blood, and their feathers were ruffled (竖起) and dirty. Johnny felt a pang of sorrow and was deeply moved by the plight (困境) of the birds.
Unable to control his emotions, Johnny approached the shopkeeper. “Why have you captured these helpless birds ” he inquired, his voice trembling with concern. Johnny thought to himself that it was not right to limit someone’s freedom, especially for innocent creatures like these birds.
The shopkeeper looked at Johnny with a mixture of frustration and sadness. “I don’t like it,” he admitted, “but I don’t have any other options. I need the job and also require funds to feed my family.” Listening to the shopkeeper’s explanation, Johnny understood the complexity of the situation. 【47题答案】
【答案】For a brief moment, Johnny was confused and slightly anxious. However, he quickly reminded himself of the importance of the birds’ liberation, believing all the obstacles would be removed. With renewed determination, Johnny took his father’s hand tightly. He begged steadily and sincerely, “Dad, I can have a good time with you on New Year’s Eve, but these birds will have a greater time in the open sky.” His father looked at him, eyes glistening. Without hesitation, he handed over the money to the shopkeeper. “You can set these birds free,” he told the shopkeeper. “And I promise you a respectable position at the supermarket that was to open nearby in a week.”
The shopkeeper was overjoyed and handed the cage to Johnny. As he eagerly took the cage and unbolted the cage door, all of the birds soared into the sky, disappearing into the distance. Johnny watched them go and began to clap, with a look of joy and satisfaction. “Dad, Now they can celebrate the new year with their families and friends. There couldn’t be a greater New Year’s present,” Johnny said with a beaming smile. His father embraced him, pride evident in his eyes. “You deserved it, my dear,” his father remarked. As they left the market, Johnny looked up at the sky, and knew that this New Year’s Eve would be one he would never forget.
