On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my daughter Juliet’s middle school. She jumped into the front seat, feeling down. She asked me to help her study for her science test.
“Dad, I need to memorize a unit about the reproductive cycle (生殖周期) of plants. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in tests if you work on trying to understand the material.”

More than one third of the homes in the United States, and Australia have dogs. Almost one fourth of the homes in England have dogs. In each country, these dogs come in all shapes and sizes.
The largest dog in the world was Zorba, a huge mastiff (大驯犬) that died in 1990. When Zorba was seven years old in 1989, he was 94 centimeters tall. In other words, Zorba was more than half as tall as an adult man. At his largest, Zorba weighed more than 156 kilograms.
While the smallest dog ever was a Yorkshire Terrier dog named Sylvia from England. This dog was only 6 centimeters tall and just under 9 centimeters from nose to tail. The dog weighed half as much as your English book, and even a young child could easily pick it up with one hand. It died in 1945 when it was only two years old.
Some dogs are unusual, not for their size, but for their brain. One unbelievable dog is Endal, the “family member” of a man named Allen Parton, who has used a wheelchair (轮椅) since a car accident in 1991.
In 2001, Parton was hit by a car while crossing a road with Endal, and thrown out of his chair. Endal quickly moved Parton into the safe position, covered him a coat, and pushed his mobile phone close enough for him to reach. Then, once he saw that Parton was all right, Endal ran back and forth between a nearby hotel and Parton, barking until people came out to help.

There’s a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay attention, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence. The tool is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.
ChatGPT remembers the logic of your dialogue, using earlier questions and answers to tell its next answers. It gets its answers from a large number of information on the Internet. You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative (权威的).
A few days after its launch, more than 1 million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley predicted in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, reaching in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.
ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research phase. But when too many people “jump” onto the server (服务器), it overloads and can’t process your request. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to use it. Then on Feb.1, 2023, OpenAI has a ChatGPT Pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to be able to use it even during busy times. This service does come at a cost of $20/month.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence bot that provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.

Do you have a good memory Can you remember English words you learnt last week Or have you forgotten the deadline of your project Many of us often say “My brain doesn’t work well”. Maybe you can try a new way of training your brain—learn with your team members.
“Teamwork makes our brains work better. The memory expert, Jonathan Hancock said, “Being part of a team has many advantages for remembering things.” In his memory research, he finds that the participants (参与者) in a team always behave better than people who work independently. That’s because they have less personal pressure, more time to think over each question.
★ Canadian researchers have shown that our brains get a natural improvement when they’ve got company (陪伴). Their study suggests two reasons. First, when we’re with people who are trying to remember something, we can easily feel that tip-of-the-tongue feeling, so we also want to join in to challenge ourselves. Second, after knowing others can remember things well, we can be encouraged to make it too.
To make better use of the power of team learning, you can use the contagion to awaken and improve memories. For example, go over new words together with your partners. Believe it or not, you and your partners will be amazed at your magic memory. Also, you can share the duty together. If you have many tasks to remember, ask your partner to remember the date of school play while you’re responsible for remembering project deadline. In this way, both of you will remember things more easily and deeply.
48.How does Jonathan Hancock support his opinion in Paragraph 2

C.By providing a form. D.By listing numbers.
49.Which of the following situations matches “tip-of-the-tongue feeling” best
A.You bite your tongue and lose words.
B.You lose the control of the tip of your tongue.
C.You come up with an answer and express it quickly.
D.You think of something but can’t find a word to express it well.
50.Which of the following can be put in ★
A.Canadian researchers don’t agree with that. B.But there’re disadvantages, either.
C.And getting company is another advantage. D.But there’s even more going on.
51.The underlined word “contagion” has the closest meaning to “________”.
A.An influence that spreads rapidly B.A way to wake up a sleeping man
C.A duty that we shoulder together D.A magic tool to store one’s memory
52.The writer’s main writing purpose is to ________.
A.introduce the results of some memory research
B.encourage people to remember things deeply
C.give advice on improving memories by teamwork
D.invite readers to take part in their research to train brains
The albatross is a fascinating seabird, known as the “King of the Sea”. It is a collection of bird families. There are many (14 at least) different kinds of albatrosses, and the largest kind has about 3.5-metre-long wings. Like other seabirds, albatrosses can drink sea water. They mainly live on fish, and they sometimes follow ships to eat leftovers. They usually catch fish on the surface; they may also dive (俯冲) into water to catch their “seafood”.
Albatrosses are known for their excellent flying abilities. They can fly thousands, even tens of thousands of kilometers without stopping. In windy conditions, they are able to stay in the air for hours without flapping their wings.
Most albatrosses live in the Antarctic and the North Pacific. They spend most of their lives on the sea. In winter, you can also find them in Shandong, Taiwan and other seaside (海滨) provinces of China. Every autumn, they fly back to their old homes on the islands far away from the land, where they give birth to babies by laying eggs. The mother albatross lays one egg every two years. The egg is taken care of by the parents in turn. Baby birds grow very slowly. They can’t fly until about 10 months after birth.
Albatrosses are beautiful seabirds, but their population is very small. Many kinds of albatrosses are even in danger. China has listed albatrosses as first-class protected birds. Some of them have been listed on IUCN Red List. However, the protection of albatrosses still faces many challenges. Further international cooperation (合作) and scientific research are needed to make sure these beautiful seabirds continue to fly freely in the sky.

①Going to the doctor can seem boring as a child and even as a teen. But when do people really start taking their health seriously According to a survey of 2,000 adults in the UK, people don’t start seriously to pay attention to their health until the age of 38—and often only after some health scare.
②The study found that some people took better care of themselves only after they experienced new pains and reached a milestone (里程碑) birthday. Others were warned to take action after a loved one died or experienced a health problem. Famous people also play a role in making people take notice of their health. After King Charles was reported to be going through treatment for cancer, the UK National Health Service’s webpage about the condition received more visits than before.
③The study also found that 11 percent of adults said they still didn’t take their health very seriously. Nearly half didn’t take much notice at a younger age as they felt fine most of the time. However, 36 percent simply felt they were too young to need to worry about it. And 25 percent felt that nothing bad would happen to them.
④It can be very easy to disregard your health especially when you are young or you feel that everything is OK. No one wants to think that there might be something wrong, but often the early signs of a health problem are not clear. Sometimes it can take a bit of a wake-up call before you start taking your health more seriously, whether that is falling ill yourself or seeing a loved one or even a well-known person experience a health problem.
⑤There’s no one-size-fits-all way when we talk about keeping healthy.

We’ve all been there—staring at a book, hoping that what we study will stick in our mind. Many of us have probably wondered, “Is there any way to improve memory ” So, why don’t we look at what memory experts say about this
Every student knows that it’s helpful to review what they’ve studied before. According to experts, we can learn things better if we wait some time before trying to study them again. They say that trying to retrieve (记起) something after you have had some time to forget it will make it easier to remember in future.
Similarly, studies have shown that taking some time to just do nothing after studying might mean that you can remember things better afterwards. It is not clear why this happens. But some think it has to do with the relationship between long-term (长期的) and short-term memory.
Another study tip is to change between different topics as you study. This can help you make connections between different ideas. Now, connecting them to each other or to images (图像) is often considered a good way to remember something. The world memory winner Jonathan Hancock says how picturing pieces of information in different places or connecting them to memorable images makes them easier to remember.
There are also more things that we can do to improve our memory. Hancock says that being generally organized makes things easier for your brain.
