Water is the most important resource for all living beings on Earth. It is rightly called the “elixir (灵丹妙药) of life”, as no life can live without it. Although nearly 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, only a small part is fresh and fit for drinking. This makes it essential to save water and use it wisely.
Water is needed for many activities in our daily life, such as drinking, cooking, cleaning and farming. Plants, animals and humans all depend on water to live. Farmers need water for growing crops, and industries need water for producing goods. Moreover, water is necessary for keeping us clean and staying healthy. Without water, it is impossible to maintain hygiene (卫生) or prevent diseases.
Sadly, water scarcity (短缺) is a growing problem in many parts of the world. Overuse, pollution, and climate change have made clean water harder to find. Many people still lack access to safe drinking water, which affects their health and quality of life. To protect this precious resource, we must avoid wasting water and keep our rivers and lakes clean.

Now, primary students learn cooking at school. It has been discussed by teachers and parents. Some think that it is a useful skill for students, while others think it’s a waste of time, some even think it’s just a show. But do they really understand cooking
It’s been said that good cooking is an art form. The truth is that it’s much more than that. While talking about different foods from all around the world, or cultures and histories of dishes, students are connected to the world and learning history and culture in a new field besides learning cooking. Students measure (称量) materials from time to time, or find oil and water don’t usually mix. Students are also learning maths and science in practice…
★ Li Mei, 11, was crazy about the yummy cakes made by her father and wanted to make one on her own. But when taking her cake out, she was upset to find that the cake was hard and black at the bottom. Her father told her when he was 13, he tried to make cakes, but wasted boxes of eggs. Then together with father, Li Mei found out what had gone wrong and succeeded in making one. Li Mei learned in the failure of cooking, and could be braver to face failures.
Apart from (除了) the practical skills, cooking builds character. It encourages kids to work with others. It also encourages them to be open to foods they might not have tried. Though being good to our health, carrots were hated by 12-year-old Xiao Lei. But he started to love them after he made a salad with them. By cooking, students put down their phones and work together with family members in the kitchen. By cooking, students form the habit of doing labor (劳动) work. . . As a part of labor education, cooking is a way to teach kids vital 21st century skills, such as creativity, team work and so on. If these skills aren’t taught to today’s students, they might hardly survive (生存) in the future.

In English, “as dead as a dodo” means someone or something is totally, unquestionably dead. But the dodo, a tubby bird that has been extinct for hundreds of years, may not be dead anymore!
US company Colossal Biosciences said it would try to bring the dodo back to life. The bird used to live on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean until the 17th century.
“[The place] to bring back the dodo into the wild would be Mauritius,” Ben Lamm, the co-founder of the company told The Guardian. Bringing back dodos into the ecosystem of the island, instead of being a newcomer to somewhere else, is thought to bring benefits to the plants and animals that already live there.
The company has found the genetic code of the extinct animals from their dead bodies. It will change the DNA of currently living animals to make them close to the animal of the past. The Nicobar pigeon will be used as the genetic base for the dodo, according to MIT Technology Review.
The company also has plans for other extinct animals, such as the mammoth (猛犸象). They believe that mammoths introduced to the Arctic could help with climate change as they turn the wet tundra (苔原) into sunlight-reflecting dry grasslands by eating the grass, according to The New Yorker.
However, some people don’t like the idea. With a third of all bird species in decline, protecting today’s species is needed more than focusing on animals of the past, said BBC Science Focus.

A.lost B.out of power C.hard to use D.nice and fancy
32.Why did the company choose Mauritius as the dodos’ living place
A.Because the island is set as a research place for new species.
B.Because dodos won’t have natural enemies on the island.
C.Because the island has the best ecosystem in the world.
D.Because they used to live there and may be good to the ecosystem.
33.How will the company bring the dodo back
A.By changing the closest bird’s DNA to make it similar to the dodo’s.
B.By producing dodos with DNA from their dead bodies
C.By combining dodos ’DNA with mammoths’ DNA.
D.By changing the dead dodos’ DNA to make them reborn.

Can plants talk Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I’m being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps (黄蜂;蜜蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants. Scientists hope to learn more about this plant warning system, so that we can use it to grow more crops.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can’t hear these sounds; but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots. Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water. Most surprisingly of all, plants have an amazing system of communication that can link nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi (霉菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. It is in some ways similar to the Internet we use. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. ★_ Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.

Scientists train AI to read human thoughts
Scientists have created a new tool that can turn people’s thoughts into words. It works by using an AI program called GPT-1 to translate brain activity words. In order to achieve this, scientists did a lot.
First, scientists got everything ready before the tests. They invited some volunteers. Each spent sixteen hours listening to stories in a scanner (扫描仪). They imagined the stories as they heard them, and the scanner recorded their brain activity. GPT-1 made connections between the ideas in the stories and the recordings of the listeners’ brain activity.
Then came the tests. The scientists did them in three different ways.
Test 1
The researchers played a new story. GPT-1 was only given recordings of the volunteers’ brain activity. But the words that GPT-1 predicted were very similar to the words in the story that they were listening to. The words weren’t exactly the same, but they often carried the same meaning. For example, when a volunteer was listening to a story about a woman who didn’t have a driver’s license, the program came up with this: “She hasn’t even started to learn to drive yet.”
Test 2
The scientists also carried out the test when volunteers imagined their own stories. “It really works at the level of ideas. The ideas are the same but expressed in different words,” says Alexander Huth, one of the scientists behind the study.
Test 3
The researchers showed the volunteers silent movies, with no spoken words at all. GPT-1 could still figure out the basic ideas.
After the tests, the scientists say that GPT-1 is the first AI program to turn what people are thinking into words without brain surgery. The tool isn’t something that can be easily used today, mainly because of the size and the cost of the scanner. In the future, they believe, a similar but cheaper tool could help people who have lost the ability to speak because of an injury or disease.
The scientists say their tool can’t be used to “read people’s minds” without permission (允许).
The tool only works if the person wants to share their thoughts.
46.What was the scanner used to do
A.Record brain activity. B.Read the volunteers’ ideas.
C.Catch the ideas of stories. D.Work out the ideas.
47.What was GPT-1 used to do
A.Receive sounds.
B.Test the scanner.
C.Produce silent movies.
D.Turn recordings of brain activity into words.
48.In which way was information put into volunteers’ brain in Test 3
A.Listening. B.Imagining. C.Watching. D.Reading.

Many teenagers want to look cool. But not everyone can afford to keep up with the changing fashion. Chloe Murray, an eighth-grader at Jefferson Middle School in the US, realized this problem and started a charitable clothes closet (慈善衣橱) to help other teenagers.
Her school supported the idea too. The school let her use a room for the project. Murray’s classmates joined her as well.
When the charitable clothes closet, Chloe’s Closet, opened, it was filled with fashionable clothes for girls and boys to help students look their best. “Confidence is a real problem in middle school, especially when it comes to clothing,” Murray said.

For thousands of years, people have lived with dogs. Ancient paintings on the walls of caves (岩洞) show people living with dogs. More than one third of the homes in the United States, and Australia have dogs. Almost one fourth of the homes in England have dogs. In each country, these dogs come in all shapes and sizes.
The largest dog in the world was Zorba, a huge mastiff (大驯犬) that died in 1990. When Zorba was seven years old in 1989, he was 94 centimeters tall. In other words, Zorba was more than half as tall as an adult man. At his largest, Zorba weighed more than 156 kilograms.

The dog weighed half as much as your English book, and even a young child could easily pick it up with one hand. It died in 1945 when it was only two years old.
Some dogs are unusual, not for their size, but for their brain. One unbelievable dog is Endal, the “family member” of a man named Allen Parton, who has used a wheelchair (轮椅) since a car accident in 1991.
In 2001, Parton was hit by a car while crossing a road with Endal, and thrown out of his chair. Endal quickly moved Parton into the safe position, covered him a coat, and pushed his mobile phone close enough for him to reach. I don’t agree with laws concerning ages of drinking alcohol (酒精), driving, and gambling in the United Sates. These laws about young people’s freedom don’t make sense and they are different from place to place. I think many should be changed.
In 1984 the United States government passed a law that set the legal (合法的) age for drinking alcohol at 21. I don’t agree with this. I consider a person to be an adult at 18. I think 18 should be the legal drinking age.
The legal voting (选举) age used to be 21, but now it is 18, and I hope it will gradually move even lower. Young people should be allowed to choose their leaders. I think anyone who wants to vote should be allowed to.
The legal ages for driving and gambling don’t make sense, because they are different from place to place. In many states the driving age is 16, in others 15. The gambling age is 21 in Colorado, 18 in New York. I can’t understand the reasons for these variations.
The legal age of marriage is 18, except for Nebraska where it is 19 and Mississippi where it is 21. In Iran, the age for men is 15 and women 13, while in Senegal it is 20 for men and 16 for women. I don’t understand why it is necessary to set an age at all.
Finally, I think young people should work together to address the situation. Write to your leaders in the government and let them know how you feel!
75.This reading is mainly about ________.
A.the ages at which various activities are allowed by law
B.why many legal ages don’t make sense and should be changed

Scientists have grown plants in soil that came from the Moon. The plants didn’t grow as well as those grown in soil from Earth, but the experiment marks an important step towards growing plants on the Moon.
The Moon’s soil is called “regolith (风化层),” and there’s not a lot of it on Earth. Most of it was collected over 50 years ago during different space trips. Because the regolith is so valuable, it took the scientists many years to use it.
The scientists didn’t receive much soil. The regolith came from three different space trips. Some soil was taken from the top layer (层) of the Moon’s surface, while the rest came from deeper layers. Different soil depths helped scientists understand how different layers of Moon soil affect plant growth. The scientists chose a special plant for their experiment. It’s a small plant related to broccoli that can grow in very little soil. Scientists know a lot about the DNA of this plant, which helps them understand how it grows in the soil it’s planted in. The plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, is widely used in research due to its simple genes and rapid growth. By studying changes in the DNA of the plants growing in the Moon’s soil, scientists may one day find new ways to help plants grow better in the Moon’s soil. This research is important for long trips to the Moon and future efforts to live in space.
“The ability to take plants successfully with us to the Moon is how we’ll grow our own food,” said one of the researchers. “Showing that plants will grow in the Moon’s soil is actually a huge step in that direction.” The experiment’s success opens the door for future progress in growing food in space.

Miss Caroline began by reading us a story about cats. Then she taught us the alphabet.
When she discovered I could read, she said, “Tell your father not to teach you any more. It’s best to start fresh.”
After supper, Atticus called, “Scout, ready to read ”
I told Atticus, “I didn’t feel well and didn’t want to go to school any more.”
“You never went to school and you do all right, so I’ll stay home too. You can teach me.”
“No, I can’t,” said Atticus, “I have to work. Besides, they’d put me in prison if I kept you at home. Now, what’s the matter ”
I told him what happened at school. “Miss Caroline said you taught me all wrong, so we can’t read any more. Please don’t send me back.”
“First of all,” he said, “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along better with all kinds of people. You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view—until you climb into their skin and walk around in it.”

“That’s really worrying you, isn’t it ”
“Yes, sir.”
Atticus said, “do you know what an agreement is ”
“Breaking the law ”

Mangrove forests (红树林) are very important to coastal environments. About 35% of all sea life depends on mangrove forests at some point in their life. Unfortunately, this year, cutting down trees and rising sea levels have greatly affected mangrove forests worldwide. In the Gulf of Thailand, the state of mangrove forests is especially pared with healthy mangroves those in the Gulf of Thailand show clear differences. Firstly, healthy mangroves have thick roots which provide shelter to sea creatures, while unhealthy mangroves are often empty and broken. Secondly, they offer different environmental benefits. Healthy mangroves protect coastlines from being worm away and provide safe places for fish and other sea life to breed (繁殖).
However, damaged mangroves lose these abilities, leading to increased wearing away of the coast and fewer kinds of sea life.
The recent decrease in fish populations in the Gulf of Thailand is likely linked to the state of mangrove forests. Harmful human activities, such as cutting down trees and pollution, harm the mangroves and upset the food chain, changing the habitat for various sea creatures. Additionally, water pollution and climate change have made the condition of mangrove environments worse, forcing sea animals to move to other areas.
The beautiful mangrove forests are very valuable for keeping coastal environments healthy. Efforts to protect and restore these forests are very important for saving sea life diversity (多样性) and supporting the ways of life of coastal communities.

As an old Chinese saying goes, “One makes two, two makes three, and three makes all things.” This saying shows that the number three is special. It means that three is a sign (标志) of growth, making things important and interesting. Let’s find out why the number three is so magical!
In language, the number three is used in many sayings. For example, there are also popular sayings with the number three, like “Things don’t happen more than three times” meaning that something is unnecessary to happen over and over again. Another saying is “Three lifetimes of luck” which means great luck. “Three ups and three downs” means a situation with many changes. “Three feet’s place where teachers stand” means teachers are standing there to teach students and shape their futures. These sayings show how important the number three is in language.
In math, the number three is very important too. Here are some examples, the simplest shape, a triangle, has three sides. Also, three points that are not in a straight line can make a circle. Remember, the three main parts of any shape are points, lines, and areas (面).
In science, especially in chemistry, the number three is also important. We study three things —solid, liquid, and gas (固、液、气) to understand how things change. These three things can change from one to another. When a solid is hot enough, it becomes a liquid. When the temperature is really high, a liquid can become a gas.
The number three is much more than a number. It comes with language, math, science, and culture. Whether in sayings, shapes, or science, the number three is magical and important!

Chinese chess, also called Xiangqi, is a famous two-player game in China. It has been played for more than 2,000 years. The game is fun and shows Chinese ways of thinking. Each player has 16 pieces in either red or black. like two armies fighting each other. The key is to catch the other player’s King, the most important piece.
The board (棋盘) of Chinese chess is special. It has nine lines across and ten lines up and down, with a river in the middle. The river stops some pieces, like the elephant, which cannot cross it. Every piece has its own way of moving. The horse moves in an “L” shape, but if any other piece is in its way, it can’t move forward. The chariot (车) moves straight, and the cannon (炮) can jump over one piece to take another. The soldiers (兵) can only move one step each time and can walk to the left or the right after crossing the river. The guards (士) protect the King inside the palace. If the King is caught, the game ends.
