A study shows that people may remember math better if they learn it before bedtime. People usually think it’s better to study in the morning, but scientists in the UK said that a good night’s sleep helps remember things.
The study asked 184 adults to learn math problems by heart. The scientists wanted to find how quickly each adult could remember the answers.
These adults first had to learn the answers before bed, between 8 pm and 10:45 pm, and they had a test the next morning. A week later, the scientists asked them to learn answers when they woke up, between 7:30 am and 10 am. The scientists tested them at the end of the day. In both tests, the adults had about 10 hours between learning the problems and taking the tests. The people who learned math problems before bed remembered them better, scoring (得分) 20.7 out of 28. The morning learners scored 18.5.
We all know that sleep can help remember things better, but most studies focus (聚焦) on how well people learn words. This study shows that the mind also helps remember numbers when we’re asleep.

A few days ago, I ran into a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, “Excuse me too, I wasn’t even watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.
Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.
That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “You were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you’ll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself—pink, yellow, and your favorite blue.”
When I heard this, I thought deeply: “While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient.” I felt sad and tears began to fall.
I quietly went to Betty’s bed, “Wake up, my dear.” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked for me ” She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you’d like them, especially the blue.” I said, “I am so sorry that I treated (对待) you that way today.” And she whispered (悄声说), “Mommy, that’s okay—I still love you anyway. ” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”

It’s hard to avoid looking like a fool on April Fool’s Day. On April 1st each year, people play tricks on each other. Classmates sometimes tie each other’s shoelaces (鞋带) to their chairs. Teachers might hand out an impossibly difficult surprise test that makes students feel scared before they realize it’s only a joke. Newspapers report on fake (假的) news (like “UFO” lands in New York City) and announce fake contests (比赛) (such as “Win an elephant!”).
One April Fool’s Day, when I was in high school, a group of students in my class played a very clever and funny trick on the teachers. They bought some chickens and set them free in our school cafeteria (自助餐厅). The chickens ran all around the school, in and out of classrooms and under our feet. Feathers (羽毛) were flying everywhere. Teachers began running after the chickens, trying to catch them. Finally they caught four of them. But the chickens were wearing numbered tags (标签) around their necks, and the teachers discovered that they had only caught chickens No.1, 2, 3 and 5. Where was chicken No.4 The teachers looked and looked. They couldn’t find another chicken. After a few hours, they realized that the students had played another joke on them: There were only four chickens in the first place! They’ve been tricked by the numbers on the chickens. It’s been a long time since I was in high school, but that April Fool’s Day remains one of my favorite memories from those years.

Do you know magpies Magpies are as much an important part of Beijing as the Palace Museum and Beijing Duck. But how much do you know about this type of birds
In the Chinese culture, magpies are also called xique, which means “bird of happiness”. People believe that seeing magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have a special job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival. It’s said that magpies would form the bridge in the sky for Niulang and Zhinyu so that they got to get together once a year. As a result, magpies stand for true love and happiness too.
Magpies have black and white feathers with slightly blue tails. With their special “chachacha” sounds from early morning till night, it is not difficult for birdwatchers to notice them. You can always see them chatting on the roof or in the branches (树枝).
Magpies have some very interesting living habits. They always live around humans, because they mainly live on the food we throw away. In winter, many magpies turn to a more plant-rich diet. Their diet includes around 60% vegetables. Sometimes they may look for food on the ground but not eat it right away. Instead, they will save the food for the future.
Even more surprising, they will stay around the dead birds and make sad sounds. It is just like they are holding a funeral (葬礼). All these unbelievable things lead some people to believe that magpies may be the cleverest of all birds.
Well, Beijing’s noisiest bird is also one of its smartest ones. Maybe these little birds can really bring a little luck too.

Covered by snow and ice, Antarctica (南极洲) is the coldest and most mysterious continent on Earth. However, this wild place still attracts people who wish to go there.
The Antarctic is a good place to research the land, ocean, air, ice shelves and biology. The Antarctic also has rich resources including coal, fresh water and seafood.
More than 30 countries have built research stations in the Antarctic. During the past 40 years, China has built five stations: Changcheng, Zhongshan, Taishan, Kunlun and Qinling.
With annual (年度的) average temperature of -25 to-30 ℃ in the Antarctic, scientists there don’t have many choices for traveling. If the weather is good, scientists will go outside to collect samples of water, rocks and other things. But when it’s too cold or windy outside, which happens quite often, they have to stay indoors. There are all kinds of laboratories at their stations.
However, they do more than just research. The scientists there have found many ways to relax. At Zhongshan Station, for example, there is a field where they can play basketball, volleyball and badminton. Zhongshan Station is not far from stations built by Russia, India and Australia. Sometimes, people from the four stations will meet and hold big parties and sports events.
