One day in 1903, French scientist Edouard Benedictus climbed high to get something on a high shelf in his laboratory. He carelessly hit an empty glass bottle and it dropped to the floor.
Benedictus climbed down, expecting a mess, but he found a surprise. The glass hadn’t broken into pieces! It had cracked (破裂的), but it had held together. Benedictus wondered why.
One of his students explained he had used the bottle to hold liquid (液体) plastic during an experiment. Then he had put it back on the shelf and forgotten to wash it. Later the liquid plastic dried (变干) itself. Benedictus realized the dried plastic had kept the broken glass from falling apart.
The same week, Benedictus read a report about a car accident in the newspaper. The car was a new and exciting invention then, and many people were driving fast on the roads. Unluckily, there were no traffic lights yet. When accidents happened, people were often hurt by flying broken glass. Suddenly, Benedictus thought of the broken bottle. Could his accident be something useful
Benedictus spent a lot of time in the laboratory, trying to find out the best way to make safety glass for cars. Finally, Benedictus put some liquid plastic between two pieces of glass and made them stick together. When he hit it, the “glass-and-plastic sandwich” broke, but not into pieces.
Benedictus succeeded. His method of putting plastic between pieces of glass is still used today. And that’s how an unexpected meeting between an unwashed glass bottle and a careless scientist led to an invention that made us all safer.
( )19.What can we learn from the first three paragraphs
A.Why the glass bottle hadn’t fallen apart.
B.What Benedictus was looking for on the shelf.
C.How the student dried the liquid plastic.
D.What mistake the student made in the experiment.
( )20.When did Benedictus decide to work on his invention
A.When he read a news report. B.When he climbed high on a shelf.
C.After his student had a car accident. D.After his student gave him a suggestion.
( )21.What was Benedictus’ safety glass like
A. B. C. D.
( )22.What can be the best title for the passage

In the past ten years, great progress has been made in technology. It seems like everything has been greatly improved. But there is one thing unlike them. It was invented over 100 years ago but remained unchanged until now. I’m talking about the walking stick for the blind.
The white stick has been used by many blind people for a long time. However, it hasn’t really been improved until a blind engineer named Kursat decided to do something to change that. He hoped his invention would help the blind.
He invented a smart stick called WeWalk. The smart stick uses built — in speakers and different sensors (传感器) to warm about possible dangers. It helps blind people in navigating (导航) around their environment. It makes their travel much easier. The stick is priced at around $500. It is half the price of some smart phones. Most people can afford it. This invention is going to change the life of the blind.
Kursat well understands the difficulties that the blind face. That is because he is blind himself. He decided to use his knowledge of technology to invent something. It would not only change his life, but also the life of many others.
“These days, we are talking about flying cars. But the blind have been using just a simple stick. As a blind person, when I am at a bus stop, I don’t know which bus is coming or which stores are around me. Now that kind of information can be provided by WeWalk,” he said, “I believe the life of the blind will be much easier and safer.”

( )25.Why can Kursat understand the blind’s difficulties
A.Because he has knowledge. B.Because he invents WeWalk.
C.Because he is blind, too. D.Because he treats the blind with kindness.
( )26.Which of the following can best describe Kursat
A.Rich and humorous. B.Creative and caring.
C.Smart and thankful. D.Honest and brave.

Now, in its fifth year, with the rapid growth of the company, there are 40 employees in Bock’s company, and they work together and have recycled 32 million pairs of chopsticks by using Bock’s special methods of steam and press machines (蒸汽压力机).
Bock takes pride in his work. And he hopes the idea behind ChopValue will help people rethink what they see as waste. “I believe every small action can help,” he said, “And I am happy that my business provides a new way for people.” Hundreds of restaurants across North America pay a little money to Bock for the recycling of their used chopsticks.
