A heartwarming act has transformed the life of LynStory, a retired woman from Fort Worth,Texas, who
dedicates her time to providing free rides to strangers in need. Story, beloved in her community for her selflessness,
received an extraordinary gift—a brand-new car—from Philadelphia car dealer David Kelleher.
Story’s mission of kindness began through the neighborhood app “Nextdoor,” where she connected with
neighbors in need of transportation. Among those she’s helped are April Goodwin, who battles cancer and relies on
Story to reach vital medical appointments, and Kevin Horrigan, a blind man who depends on her rides to get to
work. Despite her own challenges, including financial stress and a failing car, Story never stopped giving. “Lyn’s
like a little angel; she really is,” Horrigan said, reflecting the gratitude of many who have benefited from her
kindness.
Story’s compassion caught the attention of “CBSMornings” and journalist David Begnaud, whose report six
months ago highlighted her efforts. That story resonated (引起共鸣) deeply with Kelleher, known for his charitable
spirit. Inspired, Kelleher decided to surprise Story with a gift that would make her mission safer and easier.
Begnaud arranged for Story to visit a Fort Worthdealership under the pretense of repairing her old car. Instead,
Kelleher uncovered the surprise: a brand-new car, fully paid for, including title, tags, and an extended warranty (质
量保证). He also offeredto cover her insurance annually, ensuring she could continue her acts of kindness without
financial worry.
“Toknow that I could help somebody in such a way that’s been helping other people. I get so much out of it,”
Kelleher shared. “Nowshe’s gonna be safe, and it’s gonna be dependable. She’s gonna be able to help other people.”

“Sandy wind, is blowing over the shed... Sheep in the pen, are circling restlessly...” This is a folk song that
people used to sing in counties like Awatalong the TaklimakanDesert in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Simple lyrics reflect the bitter life they’ve had to sufferfrom sand and dust storms striking in from time to time.
But not long ago, a new milestoneappeared in the long battle with desertification. On Nov. 28th, the last
desert rose was planted into the sandy soil, completing the final stretch of the 3,046-km-long sand-blocking green
belt surrounding the TaklimakanDesert. Therefore, China’ s largest and the world’s second-largest shifting sand
desert now wears a “greenscarf.”
Given the vastness of the TaklimakanDesert, not to mention its high-speed winds and severe droughts,
building the world’ s longest ecological barrier to encircle this desert is no easy task. During the difficult
exploration of controlling desertification, people gradually found that adopting proper methods according to local
geographical features is the effective solution. Over time, people living at the brink of the TaklimakanDesert
noticed that sand storms have become less frequent, the environment has improved, and yields have been bettered

in their farmlands.
China is one of the countries that suffer most from desertification. Now, reduction has been realized in both
desertification and sandification. For China, the green scarf of the TaklimakanDesert also signifies a new start. For
“OurLand” and “OurFuture,” one can be hopeful to see more stories about human-desert harmony and
humanity-nature harmony.
28. Why is the folk song mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. Tointroduce a song which is popular.
C. Toexplain why wind is so violent.
B. Toshow how simple the lyrics are.
D. Toreflect the local people’s hard life.

A. Unsatisfying.B. Inefficient.C. Productive.

A. The TaklimakanDesert wears a “GreenScarf”.
B. Variousmethods have been adopted to monitor sandification.
C. The TaklimakanDesert will disappear very soon.
D. China has made great progress in controlling desertification.

The choices we make in diet and exercise go a long way towards determining our body’s mass, yet it’s our
genes that lay the groundwork for gaining and burning fat reserves. Scientists have recently discovered 14 “skinny”
genes that could influence how individuals lost weight in response to exercise.
Researchers from the University of Essex and Anglia Ruskin University in the UK enlisted the help of38
volunteers aged between 23 and 40 divided between a control group and an exercise group, who did three 20 to 30 -
minute runs per week over the course of a couple of months. As expected, those who undertook the running routine
lost weight. Yetthe amount of loss varied significantly in ways that couldn’t be attributed todifferences in training
alone. Through DNA testing, the researchers looked for gene variants (变体) that were more common in those that
shed a greater amount of weight.
The team was able to identify variants in 14 particular genes related to greater weight loss: participants with
most of these variants lost 5 kilograms (11pounds) on average, compared with an average of 2 kilograms(4.4
第 7页/共 13页
pounds) for those with fewer or none of these markers in their DNA.
That doesn’t mean there’s any weight loss magic in our genes. Effortand action is required in combination
with genetics to manage weight, the researchers are keen to point out “This study highlighted some important genes
associated with taking inches offthe jeans, but it’s important to remember that the genes will do nothing without
exercise and lifestyle changes as they are all interlinked,” says exercise scientist Henry Chung, from the University
of Essex. “Withoutintervention, they won’t show their true potential and then it doesn’t matter what genes you
have.”
32. What is the function of 14 “skinny” genes
A. They play a fundamental role in weight management.
B. They have an essential influence on weight gain.
C. They are the only decisive factor in weight loss.
D. They have determining control over human diet.
33. How did the researchers get their research findings according to Paragraph 2 and Paragraph 3
A. By describing a process.
C. By showing an argument.
B. By explaining a theory.
D. By making a comparison.
34. What does the underlined phrase “attributedto” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Amounted to.B. Added to.C. Explained by.
35. What can we learn from this passage
D. Indicated by.
A. The healthier diet the control participants had, the less weight loss they had.
B. The more exercise the control participants took, the greater weight loss they had.
C. The more “skinny” genes the exercise participants had, the greater weight loss they had.
D. The fewer “skinny” genes the exercise participants had, the greater weight loss they had.

Lucy and her friend Jack loved being at school every day because they both really enjoyed music lessons.
Lucy began playing two instruments, the piano and the violin, but she enjoyed singing more. She dreamed of being
a pop star like Alex Pepper one day. Jack had a guitar and played pop and rock music very well. He wanted to be
the coolest guitar player in the world.
One day, their music teacher, Mr. Browm, said to the class, “We’regoing to have a music competition here at
school next Friday. If you want to enter, you must sing or play a song on the school stage. Alex Pepper will be here
that day for his concert at City Stadium, so I wrote to his manager and asked him to come and give you some
guidance. He’ s going to decide the best performer and invite him or her to his concert.”
Lucy and Jack determined to take part in the competition as a team. They chose a song called I’ll help you!
They practiced on the playground in their spare time. Lucy made such great progress that Jack was deeply absorbed
in her singing and often said admirably, “How sweet your voice is!” While they pracitced, the branches of the trees
around the playground were swaying(摇摆)in the wind as if they were enjoying their performance.
On the afternoon of the competition, all the students were waiting in the school hall for Alex Pepper to arrive.
When he walked in with Mr. Brown, everyone clapped. Alex smiled and waved and then he and Mr. Brown sat
down on special seats in front of the school stage.
Then the competition started. Lots of other students sang before Jack and Lucy. An older girl named Mary
sang very well. Some students shouted “More!More!” when she finished. “She’s going to win,” thought Lucy.
Soon Mr. Brown pointed to Jack and Lucy and called out that it was their turn.

67.【答案】Paragraph 1:
Lucy began to tremble unknowingly when she stood in the middle of the stage. She was rooted on the stage and found it hard to sing with her mind blank when Jack played the guitar smoothly. Noticing Lucy’s abnormal silence, Jack gave her an encouraging smile but it didn’t work. Jack replayed the music, hoping to help Lucy calm down and get started. ToJack’s relief, Lucy followed him this time though her singing was not as good as usual. They finished their performance regretfully, waiting for the result anxiously.
