Black Point Historic Gardens
—Parks Powered by Volunteers
When
Thursdays 2 pm-5 pm; Fridays 9 am-noon; First Saturdays 10 am-noon.
Where
Meet at the top of the main staircase, just behind the Fort Mason General's Residence. If no one is there to greet you, please walk into the gardens—we are already working on the site! Registration is required.
Black Point Historic Gardens, a quiet spot, is hidden above the busy San Francisco water-front. The site was developed with gardens and pathways in the 1850s. Sheltered from the wind and offering striking views of the bay and city, it's easy to see why the hillside is a favored place for the community to garden and walk. With volunteer support, the beautiful garden pathways have been unearthed, and the site has been brought back to life. It is now open to the public.
Join us in managing this special place! We still have a lot of work to do to make this special space feel like a garden again. Volunteers will help remove invasive(侵入的)species and re-vegetate the garden with a mix of native species and horticultural species that were planted by the residents over 100 years ago! Activities include weeding, pruning, and planting.

All baby animals are cute. Seal pups(海豹幼崽)are no exception. One such pup, a spotted seal pup, about 20 days old, was found on the beach in Panjin, Liaoning Province, by the local people. Among those who rescued the seal pup were Li Yue, of the Fisheries Law Enforcement Command(FLEC)team, and volunteer Tian Jiguang, founder of Panjin Wetland Protection Association.
"The seal pup was found with a fishing net around its neck. Seals, even seal pups, have a violent temper. So when we approached it to remove the fishing net from its neck, it thought we would harm it and turned aggressive(富于攻击性的)like an angry dog. But the more it struggled, the tighter the net became. Eventually, it realized that we meant no harm, and allowed us to remove the net," said Tian.
Spotted seals' intelligence is roughly equal to that of a four-year-old child and even young seals can survive on their own in the wild. But since the rescued pup was just about three weeks old and wouldn't have survived the harsh environment of the open sea without its mother, it was not released into the sea immediately.
Spotted seals are relatively shy, difficult to approach and generally live alone, though they form large groups during pupping and molting(换毛)seasons when they walk slowly on ice or on land, which nowadays is often the case. Perhaps that's why the pup was aggressive when approached.
"We took care of it for a day, and then sent it to the Liaoning Ocean and Fisheries Science Research Institute in Dalian for treatment and examination. Only after we are sure the pup has developed the ability to survive in the wild will it be returned to the sea," said Li, captain of the FLEC team. Li generally rescues several spotted seals every year.
24. What does paragraph 2 focus on
A. The process of rescuing the seal pup. B. The new life of the trapped seal pup.
C. The habit of the spotted seal pup. D. The approach to removing the seal pup.
25. What can we learn about spotted seals from the text
A. They form groups when hunting.
B. They have a great survival ability.
C. They are cleverer than young children.
D. Their pups are always fighting with each other.
26. What may happen to the seal pup next
A. It will be examined by the FLEC team.
B. It will be taken care of by volunteers.
C. It will be released into the sea immediately.
D. It will stay at the research institute for a while.
27. Which is the best title for the text
A. A Seal Pup Was Released into the Sea.
B. Seal Pups Were Protected by Volunteers
C. It will be released into the sea immediately.
D. It will stay at the research institute for a while.

On the glittering Red Sea coast, there's a luxury tourist destination that has it all: white sands, perfect accommodation, world-class yachting and—perhaps surprisingly—a cutting-edge laboratory that's protecting coral reefs from climate change.
AMAALA is a new kind of sustainable destination. Run with 100% renewable energy, it is one of two carbon neutral luxury destinations that Red Sea Global(RSG)operates, which are test beds for sustainable development and hubs for new technology and ecological research.
Its most ambitious project is to protect and regenerate corals, which are under extreme pressure from warming temperatures, in the Red Sea and beyond. "Corals cover less than 1% of the Earth's surface but they sustain 25% of all marine life, "says John Pagano, Group CEO of RSG. "To protect and enhance the coral reefs under our guardianship we are using advanced technologies, such as remote operated vehicles and machine learning, to monitor coral cover. These innovations can produce 3D images and automatically analyze them, enabling our scientists to quickly identify and respond to threats like coral bleaching and invasive species."
RSG's scientists are also developing an onshore nursery, where corals are developed in controlled conditions. The idea is to boost the natural coral reefs when needed, says a marine conservationist on the team.
Soon, RSG will also begin testing 3D-printed materials to create artificial substrates for relocating coral colonies or growing new ones. Essentially, it means creating new reefs to support marine life. And the cool thing is that everyone's invited.
RSG's vision is for tourism, conservation and research to co-exist and sustain each other at its destinations. The marine life institute, built at AMAALA, will include visitor experiences alongside its laboratories and rehabilitation centers. Tourists will be encouraged to participate, play and learn. "We believe that academic research and tourism can work together, for people and planet alike," says Pagano.
Dr Jess Bouwmeester, an associate director of RSG, is looking forward to seeing visitors. "We want to get them involved," she says. "As soon as people start learning about corals they tend to be a lot more protective of them. In terms of environmental awareness, getting the tourism sector involved is extremely important."
28. What do we know about AMAALA and RSG
A. They are both luxury tourist destinations.
B. They are both test beds for sustainable development.
C. RSG cooperates with AMAALA to protect corals.
D. RSG runs AMAALA as its multifunctional destination.
29. According to John Pagano, why is it an ambitious project to protect corals
A. Corals should be under the guardianship of RSG.
B. Corals play a critical role in supporting certain sea life.
C. Corals cover less than 1% of the Eeath's surface but sustain 25% of ecological life.
D. Corals are under extreme pressure because of warming temperatures.
30. What are RSG's scientists doing to protect the corals
A. Using cutting-edge technologies to keep track of corals.
B. Analyzing the 3D images to respond to potential threats.
C. Testing 3D-printed materials to help create new coral reefs.
D. Developing an offshore nursery to boost natural coral reefs.
31. What is Dr Jess Bouwmeester's attitude towards tourism in the marine life institute
A. Concerned. B. Tolerant. C. Objective. D. Favourable.

At the start of the 2010s, rates of teenage mental illness took a sharp upward tum, and they have been rising ever since. The American social psychologist Jonathan Haidt believes this mental health crisis has been driven by the mass adoption of smartphones, along with the advent of social media and addictive online gaming. He calls it "the Great Rewiring of Childhood".
Haidt often collaborates with the American psychologist Jean Twenge, who was one of the first to attribute rising rates of mental illness among Gen 2 to smartphones. Skeptics of this research sometimes argue young people simply have more things to feel anxious and depressed about, between climate change, rising inequality, global conflict and so on. But Haidt makes his case persuasively. Earlier generations have also grown up in the shadow of war and global instability, he points out, and collective crises don't typically produce individual psychological ones. Instead, the evidence linking mental illness to smartphones and social media use is mounting.
So why might "phone-based" childhoods have this effect Smartphones pull us away from our immediate surroundings and the people closest to us, as the sociologist Sherry Turkle puts it, d "forever elsewhere". Teens are not only the most compulsive smartphone users but they are also the most vulnerable, partly because adolescence is a period of rapid social and emotional development. Smartphones are "experience blockers", Haidt writes. Consider how many enriching activities were displaced when young people began spending hours a day online, substituting the richness of real-life friendship with shallow online communication. Social media encourages constant social comparison, and it can be unforgiving and cruel.
Haidt's theory that overprotective parents are contributing to the mental health crisis is much less substantiated than his research on phones. He argues that children are "antifragile": they need to experience setbacks to develop resilience. This is an argument he advanced in his 2018 book. I agree with Haidt that children ought to be given greater freedom to play unsupervised, but he overstates his case.
The Anxious Generation, Haidt's another book, is nonetheless an essential read, and ought to become a foundational text for the growing movement to keep smartphones out of schools, and young children off social media.
32. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is true
A. "The Great Rewiring of Childhood" refers to the mental health crisis of teenagers.
B. Twenge was the first to owe mental illness crisis to phones.
C. Haidt believes that teenagers feel more depressed about climate change than phones.
D. For earlier generations, collective crises don't typically produce mental illness.
33. What does the underlined word "substituting" probably mean in Paragraph 3
A. Replacing. B. Reducing. C. Damaging. D. Increasing.
34. What can you infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Haidt argues that parents contribute more to the mental health crisis than smartphones.
B. Children need to experience setbacks to be less "antifragile".
C. The author agrees with Haidt that children need to develop resilience.
D. The Anxious Generation is an essential read to keep smartphones out of schools.
35. What is the passage mainly about
A. The rates of teenage mental illness have been rising ever since.
B. Smartphones occupy teenagers' daily life.
C. The reasons of the increasing rates of teenage mental illness
D. The solutions to teenage mental health crisis.

Make your online life better
Being online is "essential" for Sam Cao of Mason, Ohio. The teen graduated from high school last year. "Everyone is on technology," he says.
Researchers agree that some online experiences can benefit even young members of Generation Z. But studies have also linked time spent online with not getting enough sleep, plus mental-health issues. 36
Be active instead of passive.
Choose what you do and view. Chat over video with friends or family. Write or comment on posts. Create works of art. "You can have really meaningful, supportive conversations with friends," says psychologist Sam Ehrenreich. He contrasts this with "passive" screen time—"sitting there and scrolling continuously, without actually interacting with anybody". That can sometimes be a downer.
Think about what makes you feel good and what doesn't.
"Start by being honest with yourself about when your tech use makes you feel good," says social scientist Emily Weinstein. But some people's posts might make you feel angry or anxious. Or you might enjoy some kinds of videos but feel inadequate as you watch others. 37 Then avoid the negative ones.
38
"We don't post Instagram pictures of us sitting at home bored," notes Ehrenreich. Neither do your friends! Like you, they have homework, school and other not-so-fun responsibilities. They don't usually look picture-perfect. Some teens, however, "spend an incredible amount of time making sure what they post is perfect". Without that reality check, you may feel left out or jealous when you see fun party scenes or glamorous posts. Chances are your friends feel the same way, so talk about it with them.
Protect your privacy.
39 "There's a tendency to overshare every detail of your life." says Sam Cao. Sharing details about yourself online may leave you vulnerable to scammers. Some strangers online may endanger you—either your personal safety or your wallet.
Set limits, and ask others to respect them.
There is so much that can be great about tech, but make sure your tech isn't taking over your life. For starters, you need your sleep—and screen time can mess with that. 40 Set limits with friends, too. Tell them you want to limit screen time during homework, before bedtime or at meal times. Let them know not to expect you to respond to texts or calls right away.
A. Figure out what those things are.
B. Be realistic about what you see online.
C. Good posts can have a positive effect on you.
D. Your friends are not concerned about your online life.
E. Getting phones out of the bedroom is really good for teenagers.
F. Photos, videos and other posts become part of your digital footprint.
G. So, how can you get the most from your screen time while managing the risks

On Christmas Eve 2022, Yvonne White received a call about her brother Joey, who had been found in a snowbank by Sha'Kyra Aughtry during a severe snowstorm in Buffalo.
Joey White, 64 and mentally disabled, eventually ventured out, although Yvonne had telephoned and instructed him not to leave the his group home and stay indoors. It was unclear that when and why Joey had left home, but Yvonne suspected Joey had walked about 9 miles to North Park Theater, where he had worked as a janitor(保洁员)about since 1980. Joey's employer, Ray Barker, reminded that he had called him not come to work due to the terrible weather before the deadly snowstorm hit Buffalo. "For someone it is hard not to engage the working pattern that he's used to being in." he added, explaining that during the pandemic Joey still showed up for work when the theater was closed.
At around 6:30 a. m. on Dec. 24, Joey ended up in a snowbank directly outside Aughtry's home, severely frostbitten(冻伤), wailing and crying out in pain. Aughtry happened to go outside and found the stranger. She managed to carry him into her home and used the hair dryer to peel off Joey's clothing, which attached tightly to his shivering body, his frozen socks and the grocery store bag in his frozen hands.
Aughtry, a mother of three, did everything she could to care for Joey. She covered Joey up, washed his clothes, bathed and fed him. After about an hour of trying to warm the old stranger up, she found he needed medical attention immediately due to his severe frostbitten.
However, The storm was so heavy that the roads were glazed in ice and snow completely. The roads were impassable, and despite numerous calls to 911, help seemed unreachable. Seemingly, getting the professional medical help was in vain, too.
Fortunately, Joey had memorized his sister's phone number. Then, Aughtry got in touch with his sister Yvonne White, who couldn't also leave her home to her brother because of the snow. The woman had to stay in constant communication with Aughtry on phone from then on.

第一节 参考范文
Dear Chris, Knowing that you are fascinated about the photography, I am writing to share with you my unique experience on the 15th China Photography Festival, hosted in our hometown, San Menxia, the city of Swan last month.
During the festival, there were a wide range of events, including the remarkable photographic art exhibition, which lasted for about a half month in San Menxia Cultural Expo City. All the items on display were selected from the leading photographers’ pieces around the country. What is worth mentioning are the multiple artworks in the Mongolia Exhibitions Area, where the eye-catching photos were surrounded by visitors of all ages. We were all amazed by the breathtaking scenic beauty in the pictures. The exhibition reminds me that everyone can not only find the beauty around us in our own eyes, but also showcase it in our own style, such as by our lens.
I do hope that you will witness such a splendid feast like this one day when it is convenient for you. I am also convinced that you can benefit a lot from the acclivity.

Para.1:
On December 25, both Aughtry and Yvonne posted a Facebook live video seeking for help. Within half an hour, neighbors showed up to plow the snow around Aughtry’s house to ensure the transport. With the help of neighbors, Aughtry and neighbors wrapped Joey in a thick blanket tightly and transported him to the nearest hospital, while the doctors were all well prepared to operate on the old man. While diagnosed with fourth-degree frostbitten, eventually Joey was alive after a serious and successful operation.
Para.2:
Yvonne felt overwhelming relief and gratitude, knowing her brother’s medical attention was available on the Facebook. She sighed with relief and appreciated that her big brother was safe and alive. With the heartfelt gratitude, Yvonne updated her post on Facebook appreciating all the kindness and warmth around her. She added with tears welling her eyes, “The kind woman did as much as she could to help and rescue her old brother’s life.” She concluded her post, reading “Amid the suffering and misfortune, I found a silver lining. Importantly, I feel we now have a sister and three nephews, considering the act of kindness not only the best Christmas gift but also a Christmas miracle.”
