Donnalean Wilde,58-year-old Canadian mother of five and grandmother of 12,has set the new
world record for the longest abdominal plank(平板支撑)ever held by a woman after holding the same position for 4 hours,30 minutes and Il seconds, surpassing the previous record holder by 10 minutes. She broke age stereotypes and pushed her physical limits to accomplish this incredible achievement.
"My elbows hurt badly,"said Wilde, who beat the world record at the high school she worked at
as vice principal.“I was so worried about losing my form and I think that's why my quadriceps ( 四 头 肌 )hurt because I was on edge in the process."She said the last hour was the most challenging part, but she was able to overcome it by breathing and staying calm.By doing so,she prevented any trembling or shaking that could have compromised her performance. All 12 of her grandchildren attended the event, which she trained for by planking three hours every day.
"I realized that I could read and do things when I was planking and fell in love with it,"she added, noting that she studied for a master's degree and would sometimes watch movies while training. She said she has been planking for at least ten years already and got into it after she broke her wrist and was unable to run or lift weights for a while.
What's even more impressive about her setting the new world record, though,is that she did it
while suffering from transverse myelitis(横贯性脊髓炎).That chronic pain and numbness that
she deals with every day has helped her to be able to plank through the pain."I think the model for someone who has done a world record is officially amazing, but she's been officially amazing her whole life,"said Randy, her husband.
24.What do we know about Wilde's achievement of abdominal plank

After Taylor Swit, the “Mona Lisa”is probably the most recognizable female face in the world. Every day around 20,000 people stare at the Leonardo da Vinci's painting in the Louvre.Yet it became famous not because of a tempting semi-smile.Until a worker stole the masterpiece in 1911,it was still mostly unknown;viewers flooded in to see what a French newspaper called"an enormous, horrific, gaping void(空白)”.
Classics of art, literature and music are supposed to carry some mysterious appeal that endures across the ages. But as Rochelle Gurstein,a historian, writes in a new book, the "timeless classic" is anything but."What I believed was written in stone was actually written in water",she argues. Classics come and go.
Take other celebrated works of art.Until the end of the 19th century Michelangelo's"David" had only his fig leaf to protect him from the weather in Piazza della Signoria in Florence. He attracted more pigeons than visitors;visitors preferred the artist's sculpture of Moses in Rome. Before the famous "Venus de Milo"was discovered in 1820,viewers were crazy about "Venus de Medici",a delicate sculpture most people alive today have never heard of.
Much as in art,the classics of music and literature have not always been set in stone either. Today,Johann Sebastjan Bach is often regarded as the master of classical music. But after his death in 1750,Bach's compositions fell out of fashion until Felix Mendelssohn,a German composer, rediscovered them in the 1820s.Herman Melville's masterpiece"Moby Dick"was largely forgotten until critics such as Raymond Weaver,a professor at Columbia University rescued him from the depth of a nobody around the centenary of his birth in 1919.
"The status of classics"depends on critics and shows the power of passionate writers to change the way people look at art.Tastes evolve, and they should. But culture lives on only as long as people continue to argue over what counts as a classic today. The true enemy of the classic is not relativism or awakening.Itis silence.
28.What made the painting"Mona Lisa"famous
A.The theft. B.The semi-smile. C.The report.
29.What does Rochelle think of classics
A.Enduring. B.Fading. C.Changeable.
30.How does the author develop paragraph 4
D.The painter.
D.Admirable.
A.By making a comparison.
C.By giving an explanation.
B.By offering examples.
D.By giving a description.
31.What might ultimately discourage the development of classics
A.The ignorance ofculture
C.The evolution of tastes.
B.The course of time.
D.The lack of criticism. D
The invention of railroads started a new age of land travel and forever changed the way humans perceive time.On November 18th,1883,railroad companies in the United States and Canada
transformed time in both countries, leading to the ground-breaking concept of time zones around the world.
For centuries, people measured time based on the Sun's position, with each town
setting its clocks according to local noon.As trains began to travel across long distances, the lack of coordinated(协调 一 致的)time systems became a major issue.Different local times led to train scheduling chaos, with delays and, more dangerously, the risk of accidents.A unified( 统 一的) time system became essential notjust for efficiency but also for national safety.
By 1847,all British railway companies had adopted a single standard,"Railway Time"time,
across their networks. The new timekeeping method was adopted nationwide in 1880,making the UK the first country to standardize time.Standardizing time across Great Britain improved efficiency, reduced the number of rail accidents, and helped passengers make their connections. It didn't take long before this idea spread to North America. However, unlike the UK which only had to standardize time across a country, the US and Canada, with their vast teritories covering multiple time zones, needed to unify time across an entire continent, adding to the complexity of standardization.
In 1879,Canadian engineer Sir Sandford Fleming came up with a revolutionary idea after
missing a train:the creation of time zones. On November 18,1883,railroads in the U.S.and Canada adopted standard time, dividing the continent into four zones:Eastern,Central,Mountain, and Pacific.A year later,Fleming helped organize the International Prime Meridian Conference, where the Greenwich Meridian was chosen to be the common zero of longitude( 经 线 )and the standard of keeping track of time throughout the world. The creation of time zones revolutionized how humanity organized time, providing a practical solution to a widespread problem with lasting effects on global communication, commerce, and culture.
32.What is the purpose of paragraph 2
A.To introduce the early timekeeping methods.
B.To state the necessity for a unified time system.
C.To show the issues of complex railroad networks. D.To present the risks of long-distance transportation.
33.What can we know about initial time standardization in North America
A.It was more challenging to carry out.
B.It was only adopted in certain regions.
C.It promoted the expansion of the train system.
D.It pushed the UK to coordinate time nationwide.
34.In which year was the global time zone system officially established
A.1847 B.1879 C.1883 D.1884
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.Standardized timekeeping improved railway safety.
B.The unified time standard revolutionized land travel.
C.The progress of railroads inspired the birth of time zones.
D.Train scheduling is essential to efficient global commerce. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5 分,满分12.5分)

It was an early winter morning.Joan was sleeping soundly when the phone rang in the living room. She rolled over and glanced at the clock on the wall—it was already nine o'clock. Every weekend morning, her mother had to work part-time in the cafe.Aithough Joan was still sleepy, she knew she had to get up.After all,she didn't expect her brother Mike, who was sleeping like a log,to hear the phone. She quietly went over to the living room. When she picked up the receiver,on the other end came the warmhearted greetings,“Good morning,my Dear!"Recognizing the voice from her father,Joan was immediately surrounded by a sense of joy and the sleepiness swept away.
Joan's father was a seaman, who rarely came back.Working on the sea was really hard. Born in a not-rich family,Joan and Mike felt the stress of life but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere.
