Here are a group of everyday people who saw problems, and now their solutions are making the world a better place.Ron Davis Alvarez
Ron Davis Alvarez, a product of Venezuela’s El Sistema, a program offering free classical music training to disadvantaged children, founded the Dream Orchestra in Sweden. This orchestra brings together over 400 people from more than 25 nationalities, ranging from 3 to 56 years old, including immigrants, refugees, second-generation immigrants, and native Swedes. When I bought a house in Portland four years ago, I immediately began designing my dream garden, intending to remove the weeds and plant some vegetables or long-lasting flowers. I soon discovered, however, that the soil was unproductive, clay-heavy and littered with stones. In previous, much tinier gardens, I’d fix it with a few bags of high-quality soil from the nursery.
Replacing this vastly greater quantity of dirt was neither practical nor financially possible. Instead, I decided to remediate (补救) what I already had.
The challenge before me was to revive the soil. Two core principles of modern agriculture can guide this shift: minimizing soil disturbance and emphasizing biodiversity. In practice, growing crops by turns; prioritizing organic inputs over chemical fertilizers; integrating crops, trees and livestock; and sheltering soil from being washed away with cover crops, often work.
I tried to apply such methods in my garden. Where once there was only grass, I made a pond, a rock garden, a wildflower field and raised beds for vegetables. I let plants grow and decompose by themselves in a natural way. I also introduced different plants and revived its ecological communities.
In May, I decided to relocate a flowering plant. As I dug the plant out, all manner of life emerged. Earthworms swung from the roots. A daddy longlegs hurried for shelter. Below the plant I even noticed the fine white fungal mycelium (真菌菌丝).
Running my fingers through the soil, I understood, more clearly than ever before, that I transformed much more than my yard - it completely changed the way I think about soil. It’s not simply as a medium for life, but as a living entity (个体) in its own right. Although science still lacks an agreed definition of life, textbooks highlight criteria widely considered to differentiate the living and nonliving. Soil meets many of them: It has a highly organized structure. It has a capacity for active self-preservation. It grows. It breathes. And it can die.
24.What was the soil problem in the author’s garden
A.Wet and salty. B.Poor and stony.
C.Dry and sandy. D.Acidic and weedy.
25.What was the focus of the author’s gardening methods

A.To introduce different species. B.To prove the garden shelters insects.
C.To show the soil has come to life. D.To explain the transplanting process.
27.What is conveyed in the last paragraph
A.Soil has a soul. B.Life is well defined.
C.Life has complexity. D.Soil is the source of life.

In early August, the sandy hills along the coast of La Libertad, in northern Peru, are alive with bluish-purple fruit. The region, thought unsuitable for blueberries just over a decade ago, is now placing Peru at the forefront of the global blueberry market.
Alvaro Espinoza, an agricultural engineer, was among the first to experiment with blueberries in Peru 15 years ago, when the fruit was unknown in the country. “People called me crazy,” he recalls. Since then, Peru’s blueberry industry has been growing rapidly, from planting only a few hundred acres of blueberries in 2012 to the world’s top exporter of fresh blueberries for the last five years.
Inspired by the success of their Chilean neighbors, Peruvian entrepreneurs began exploring a local blueberry market in the early 2000s. However, conventional wisdom held that blueberries needed temperatures below 45℉ to thrive, which the Peruvian coast lacks.
Peruvian entrepreneur Carlos Gereda, a pioneer in the industry, began traveling to Chile in 2006 to learn about blueberries. On one of his trips, he brought back 14 varieties to test in Peru’s desert. It took him two years to find the right one, named Biloxi. With this variety identified, he invested $300 to start a company that became a Peruvian blueberry leader, helping Peru’s blueberry industry expand to over 49,000acres. Today, Peru exports over twice as many blueberries as its nearest competitors, with over half heading to the US, where the country supplies 40% of fresh imports.
But last year, this boom faced its first setback. A major heat wave driven by an El Nino event hit northern Peru, severely damaging blueberry crops and causing a 25% drop in production. This experience has accelerated efforts to develop new, genetically improved blueberry varieties that can thrive in even hotter climates. To create these robust varieties, scientists develop new seeds and evaluate them over years to select the best individuals. They aim to create beat-tolerant plants and produce “jumbo” berries-one inch or larger-to meet global demand.
28.Why did people initially think blueberries couldn’t row in Peru
A.The soil was too salty for blueberries.
B.The climate was thought to be unsuitable.
C.Peru lacked the right equipment for farming.
D.Blueberries were unknown to people in the country.
29.How did Carlos Gerda contribute to Peru’s blueberry industry
A.He promoted Pera’s blueberries in global markets.
B.He found a suitable blueberry variety for Peruvian climate.
C.He carried out researches into blueberry farming in the US.
D.He created heat-tolerant plants and produced “jumbo” berries.
30.What major challenge did Peru’s blueberry industry face last year
A.A shortage of new blueberry varieties.
B.A new competitor entering the market.
C.Unusually hot temperature reducing the blueberry output.
D.A significant decrease in global demand for fresh blueberries.
31.What does the undealined word “robust” in the last paragraph probably mean
A.Fast-growing B.Good-quality.
C.High in demand. D.Strong and adaptable.
D
According to new research, babies recognize pretence and around half of children can pretend by themselves by 12 months. The study, led by the University of Bristol, shows for the first time how children’s awareness and grasp of pretence in its various forms develops from birth to three years old.
The lead author said, “Our findings highlight how pretending is a complex, evolving (进化的) process which begins very early on in life, helping their cognitive (认知的) and social skills to advance. Pretence is a key part of children’s learning, creativity, making friends, and understanding of other people. This study maps its many different stages and types.”
The findings are based on results from a survey of 900 parents of children aged from birth up to three years old from the UK, the US, Australia, and Canada. The earliest reported age when children understand pretence was four months and by the age of 13 months, around half were reported to discern pretence by others. Around half of 12-month-olds were reported to be pretending regularly themselves.
Researchers identified 18 different types of pretence which emerge and progress in the early years. One-year-olds’ pretence was shown to initially involve their bodies, for example, pretending to sleep. They may also gesture objects and actions, such as brushing their teeth with a finger or pretending with objects for their intended purpose like drinking out of an empty cup.
The researchers hope their research will help parents and preschool teachers understand and identify which types of pretence are appropriate to try with children at certain ages, supporting their learning, creativity, and friendships.
The lead author said, “With further research, the findings have the potential to be used as a diagnostic tool for developmental differences in early years. This could ultimately help parents, preschool educators, and medical professionals better understand how to play with children at different stages of development.”
32.How can pretence impact babies
A.By enhancing their physical strength.
B.By boosting their cognitive development.
C.By making them more resistant to illness.
D.By teaching them to read and write earlier.
33.What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Recognize. B.Force. C.Interrupt. D.Criticise.
34.What might the findings bring
A.New learning skills in science.
B.Changes in secondary education.
C.Better play methods for primary students.
D.Ways to assess developmental differences.
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.How Babies Learn to Pretend
B.The Process of Pretence in Children
C.New Insights into Early Childhood Pretence
D.The Role of Pretence in Human Development

Music is a huge part of our lives. 36 But do we realize just how much of an influence it really has on us
● 37
There’s nothing quite like a song to capture what was going on culturally at that time. The slang and language usage are so indicative of the times, and you can probably recall when a song was made based on what is mentioned.
● It teaches us about language.
Most parents sing to their child from an early age, as singing is such an important part of learning a language. If you take another language, chances are you learn key words and phrases through songs. 38 For example, if you were asked to memorize sentences in Spanish you’d probably have a hard time, but you can sing out a few lines of the Macarena.
●It’s how we celebrate.
Pretty much every moment we celebrate in our lives is tied to music—blowing out our birthday candles, scoring a goal, etc. 39 Holidays around the world have distinct music that accompanies them. A party without music just isn’t a party at all.
● It’s part of our routine.
Music just becomes so intertwined with our lives. While we’re cooking, cleaning, or just walking around the grocery store, it’s always there. It’s what we do when we’re happy or sad, and it’s become our self-care. 40
Music has become our favourite pastime, distraction, hobby and art form. It’s SO necessary for shaping us and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
A.It is like a time capsule.
B.Music helps us find our identity.
C.Without it we’d probably be lost.
D.It provides an form of repetition contributing to memory.
E.It is a unique and beautiful experience that only music can provide.
F.We even get down to music in our heads when we do a happy dance.
G.It’s our time to be alone and drown out the stress and the world around us.

In the beautiful town Riverview surrounded by rolling hills, lived two brothers, Jack and Tom.
They were as different as night and day-Jack, the older by two years, was a keen reader with a preference for quiet moments spent in academic books, his nose often buried in the pages of historical texts or scientific pared with him, Tom was totally different, full of energy and enthusiasm, always longing for the outdoors. He found joy that came from playing soccer and basketball. The differences between them often led to arguments, creating a gap that seemed impossible to bridge.
One summer, their parents, hoping to mend the growing divide between them, decided to send them on a camping trip in the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. They thought that the fresh mountain air, coupled with outdoor activities, would bring them closer.
Unwillingly, the two brothers packed their bags, each secretly hoping that the other would give up at the last minute. But neither did, and soon enough, they found themselves setting up camp under a canopy(顶篷)of twinkling stars, the cool night breeze whispering through the trees.
The first few days were tense. They quarreled over insignificant matters-who should carry the water bottle, who got to choose the music during meals, and whose turn it was to gather firewood. Their unpleasant quarrel echoed through the quiet forest, breaking the peace that enveloped them. Each disagreement seemed to widen the crack between them until one evening when things took a dramatic turn.
A sudden storm rolled in. The wind howled through the trees, and rain began to pour. In the disorder of securing the tent and gathering supplies to prevent them from getting wet, Tom slipped on a muddy path and hurt his ankle badly. Struggling with extreme pain, he knew that he had to turn to Campsite medical tent.
注意: 1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡上相应位置作答。

第二节 (满分25分)
67.示例:
Noticing his brother in such a situation, Jack’s heart softened immediately. Forgetting their previous disputes, he rushed to Tom’s side, carefully lifting him up and supporting him as they made their way to the medical tent. Inside, Jack gently laid Tom down and helped him apply an ice pack to his injured ankle. Jack’s actions spoke louder than words, showing Tom that despite their differences, he cared deeply for his brother’s well-being. For the first time in a long while, Tom felt a warmth that transcended their disagreements.
As Tom healed, the brothers worked together to complete the camping trip. They shared responsibilities more evenly, finding joy in tasks they once viewed as burdensome. Jack took charge of navigating through the forest trails while Tom, despite his injury, offered encouragement and moral support. As the days went by, their bond grew stronger, and they realized that despite their contrasting interests, they could still find common ground. By the end of the trip, the gap that once seemed impossible to bridge had narrowed significantly, replaced by a deeper understanding and appreciation for each other.
