A few years ago, I stood in a small classroom just outside of New York City, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. An instructor read out numbers — 74,470, 70,809, 98,402 — and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly.
The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus (算盘). Stevenson used a practice called “mental abacus”, imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problems.
From watching Stevenson, I knew that gaining skill at the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads, so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills. I was one of the many who had some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear. My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like a percentage change, I would go online.
Then after a few abacus classes and a good amount of practice, math seemed a little less frightening. I didn’t become Euclid, the founder of geometry. But the practice brought my numerical fears down. This is a time-tested power of the abacus. Confidence grows easily in the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason, it seems, is that practice and outcomes appear to move in step.
My kids gained much as well. My youngest daughter could work out those math problems that once baffled her, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show it to her classmates and teacher. These were just small successes for them, but that was how they finally developed confidence.
24.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph
A.To prove the difficulty of math. B.To introduce the topic of the abacus.
C.To show the high intelligence of Stevenson. D.To stress the importance of abacus learning.
25.What do we know about the author from paragraph 3
A.He was weak in math. B.He was good at computer.
C.He regarded math as useful. D.He had a close relationship with kids.
26.What does the author realize from his learning experience
A.Knowledge starts with practice. B.It’s never too late to learn.
C.Faith can move mountains. D.Practice makes perfect.

A.Excited. B.Inspired. C.Defeated. D.Interested.

Math might be a constant in school, but how it is taught has changed a lot in recent years. One primary motivation for those changes-including the 2010 passage of the Common Core math educational standards—is to prepare students for a more unpredictable and complex future.
“Mostly gone are the days when teachers would lecture at the front of the classroom while students quietly took notes. Now, teachers present a few concepts, and then students work together to solve problems in different ways,” says Maria Klawe, president of Math for America, a nonprofit dedicated to helping math and science teachers.
However, for many parents, helping their kids with homework has become daunting, as modern methods seem unfamiliar from what they learned in school. A 2021 survey showed more than half of parents feel hopeless when trying to help their kids with homework. So, how is today’s math different—and why is it so essential for tomorrow’s society
Before Common Core math, “Answers were valued over process,” says Jyung, a math teacher. Students were taught to follow strict, step-by-step methods to obtain the correct answer, but these didn’t necessarily make sense to them. But when that approach is used, “Students are unable to apply the concepts to real-world problems or unable to solve very highly complex math problems,” she says.
Under Common Core, the focus has shifted. Perhaps the biggest change, though, is the way students tackle problems. Instead of just a handful of methods, Jyung now sees students using various strategies to solve problems—giving them the freedom to choose the best approach. Now, even mistakes are part of the learning process. “As math educators, we believe in productive struggle, like struggling is actually good. That’s where learning happens,” she says.
28.What does the Common Core math educational standards aim to achieve
A.Equip students with the ability to solve problems. B.Motivate students to study harder.
C.Prepare students for future exams. D.Improve students’ scores.
29.What does the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Embarrassing. B.Satisfying. C.Rewarding. D.Discouraging.
30.What was the problem of the old method
A.Students can rarely apply math knowledge to practical problems.
B.Students find it challenging.
C.The math problems are too complex.
D.The method is too strict.
31.What does the author intend to express in the last paragraph
A.Remembering various strategies is the key to solving problems.
B.Students have the freedom to choose what to learn.
C.Math knowledge is less important than tackling problems.
D.Mistakes are a significant part of learning.

Laptop computers (笔记本电脑) are popular all over the world. In the United States today, lap-tops also connect students to their classrooms. Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program whose main purpose is to allow students to do schoolwork anywhere.
Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10,000,000 computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with lap- tops will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates and their families, without going to computer labs. They can use it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all!
Because of many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources.
At Westlake College, more than 60% of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow teachers to use computers in their lessons. As some Westlake teachers said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”
32.What is the main purpose of the laptop computer program
A.To help people work at home.
B.To connect students to libraries.

33.Which of the following is true about Westlake College
A.Students must do their homework in computer labs.
B.1,500 students of the college will receive laptops.
C.All the staff of the college use computers.
D.It is a new college in America.
34.What’s some teachers’ attitude towards the program
A.Doubtful. B.Worrying. C.Supportive. D.Uncaring.
35.What is the best title for the text

I have arthritis (关节炎) in my legs and that’s why I have to use this wheelchair. I have hazel (淡褐色) eyes and I wear ugly, square glasses. I don’t have any friends at school and all the girls tease me. I hate my life.
One day, when I went to school, Tasha and Ashleigh came up to me and started teasing me as usual. “Square eyes, square eyes. Hey! Look, little Mary-Jane has had her sandwiches cut into little squares with peanut butter in.” They took my lunch bag off me and throw it up on the roof where I couldn’t get it. I went off to my secret hiding spot and cried. This happens every day. I’m always picked on. I wished I could lock myself away from the world so I wouldn’t have to worry about being teased.
When I got home, my mom immediately knew that I had been bullied. “Oh, Mary-Jane. What did they do to you this time ” I told her what happened. “I think it’s about time someone talked to those girls. I’m going to call the principal,” she said. “Mom, no,” I stopped her. “They’ll just tease me even more. Please don’t call.” “Well…okay…but, if you, if I don’t call, will you promise me that you will stand up to them ” I nodded but I was not sure if I meant it.
The next day, Ashleigh came into the classroom late. Everyone turned around and stared at her. I was copying a sentence from the blackboard when Tim nudged me and told me to turn around. So I put down my pencil and turned my body slowly. I thought my eyes had just popped out of their sockets because what I saw was Ashleigh sitting in a wheelchair just like me but she had her leg in a cast (石膏模). “I broke my leg when I was riding my bike yesterday.” Ashleigh had been talking about her new bike for weeks. “Ummm…okay…everybody please be careful of Ashleighi’s leg,” Mrs. Little said to the rest of the classroom who were still staring at Ashleigh.

第二节 (满分25分)
67. At lunchtime, everyone rushed out of the classroom, leaving only Ashleigh and me behind. As soon as our eyes locked, she awkwardly attempted to wheel her chair away, her face flushing. I noticed that her lunch bag was nowhere to find. Sensing her growing helplessness, I knew I could easily get revenge on her, but should I “No, or it would be another form of bullying,” I whispered. After a moment’s hesitation, I wheeled over and asked, “If you forgot to bring your lunch, would you like to share my sandwiches ” She looked at me in surprise, thanked me repeatedly, and eyed my sandwiches with guilt and gratitude.
After school, I overheard Ashleigh talking to some other kids. She said, “I was so mean to Mary-Jane before. Now that I’m in a wheelchair too, I’ve come to understand the pain I inflicted on her. I’m sincerely sorry.” Her voice was brimming with remorse. The others listened in silence. A strange warmth welled up in my heart. Since then, Ashleigh has become my friend and Tasha has ceased the teasing. It’s astonishing to befriend those who were once unkind, and my school days have gradually become more tolerable.
