Historic Colleges and Universities in America
Harvard University
Founded in 1636, Harvard University is considered the first college in America. Over the years, Harvard has established many graduate programs in areas such as business, arts and science, law, education, design and public administration. Famous undergraduate and graduate alumni (校友) include presidents John Quincy Adams, Rutherford B. Hayes, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
William & Mary
Although plans for the creation of William & Mary date back to 1618, the Virginia-based school wasn’t officially permitted by King William Ⅲ and Queen Mary Ⅱ of England until 1693. The college established the nation’s first law school. And it enrolled several founding fathers, including presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Tyler and James Monroe.

St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, was founded in 1696, three years after William & Mary, making it the third-oldest college in the US. In 1951, more than 250 years after the college was established, the first class of women was admitted. The college opened a second campus in Santa Fe 13 years later in 1964 and enrolled 81 students in its first freshman class. Francis Scott Key, who wrote The Star-Spangled Banner, is a famous alumnus.
Yale University
Yale University was established in 1701 in the coastal town of Saybrook, Connecticut. The institution was officially named Yale College in 1718. Over the next century it founded the first church within a college, taught the first modern science course, established law and medical schools, opened the Western Hemisphere’s first college art museum, formed the first literary review and started Yale Daily News, the oldest college daily newspaper in the US. Reading opens a world of possibilities. Books about self-improvement, DIY home repair or novels that engage your imagination can be transformative. But for people who are food insecure, going to a bookstore or a library is not a priority (优先事项). That’s why a charity in Britain is now serving books at local food banks.
The charity, Bookbanks, was founded by Emily Rhodes, a London-based writer who has been surrounded by books in her entire life. She was a keen reader, studied English in university, and worked in publishing and bookselling before becoming a journalist.
In 2022, Rhodes began volunteering at a community food center in Newington Green, in northeast London. There she realized that bringing books into the center could not only enrich people’s lives with reading but it could also help people make connections and socialize. “People think of a book as a solitary thing, but I think there’s another side to books that makes them amazing connectors and community builders,” Rhodes said.
Rhodes started small by setting up a table with a few hundred books at the food bank in Newington Green. At first, Rhodes gave books from her own collection but as her project grew, she started to get donations from bookstores, libraries and publishers.
Then she and her co-director Hattie Garlick officially launched Bookbanks as a charity and began to expand in the city. Since three percent of people use food banks, this is a great opportunity to get books into the hands of people that cannot afford to own books.
Yusuf, 53, a food bank user, said that he took books to read with his son. “It’s the best time; we are quiet together. We haven’t got money, but we have books. The books are full of knowledge and knowledge is good,” he said.
There are currently four Bookbanks locations, according to the organization, and to date, more than 3,000 books have been given away. There are plans to open four-to-six more locations in food banks in 2025. And the food banks have the potential to be a community space of socializing and learning and not just a place to be fed.
4. What is the purpose of Bookbanks
A. To inspire kids’ love for story books.
B. To make an advertisement for food banks.
C. To provide a quiet environment for writers.
D. To offer the poor a chance to read books.
5. What does the underlined word “solitary” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Strange. B. Funny. C. Separate. D. Different.
6. How did Emily Rhodes start her project in the first place
A. By donating her own books. B. By purchasing used books.
C. By opening bookstores. D. By working with publishers.
7. What is Yusuf’s attitude to Bookbanks
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unclear. D. Unconcerned.

People usually wear rings to look nice — or perhaps to show that they’re married! But in the James Bond movies, the British secret agent (特工) has some very cool rings that do other things. For example, in the 2002 movie Die Another Day, James Bond wears a ring that can break glass: twist (扭动) the ring and glass breaks just by touching it!
Now, technology experts have designed rings that can make any of us feel like a secret agent. These rings don’t break glass or catch bad guys, but they let your fingers work like a computer mouse.
Put a special ring onto your first finger, and you’ll be able to control your computer — scrolling (滚动) and clicking — without using your laptop’s touch pad. One of the latest versions of these rings is made by a Swiss company called Padrone, which says its ring turns any surface into a touch pad. That means when you’re wearing the ring you can move your finger around on your desk — or on a lot of different flat surfaces — and control your computer.
So if you’re working on a laptop, you don’t have to move your hand to the small touch pad — you can scroll and tap from a more comfortable position. Padrone’s ring connects to your computer using Bluetooth, and it works with sensors and a very small camera inside the ring. The rings, which will come in different sizes, are not available just yet, but the company hopes people will be able to buy them in May, when they should cost about $280.
But there are also cheaper ways to try out this type of technology. In fact, there are already apps you can install (安装) on a smartwatch that let you control your computer with just your finger or by tapping the watch!
8. What is the function of the first paragraph
A. To offer an example. B. To make comparisons.
C. To provide an argument. D. To lead in the topic.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. How to fix a computer. B. How to run a company.
C. The role of the special ring. D. The way of using an app.
10. What is Padrone’s expectation
A. It will employ more loyal workers.
B. Its product will come into the market.
C. It will remake the James Bond movies.
D. Its computers will be checked at once.
11. What can be learnt from the last paragraph
A. Smartwatches are welcomed by the public.
B. It is convenient to buy things by computer.
C. There are cheaper options to try the technology.
D. Padrone’s rings have more advantages over apps.

Elephants are splendid creatures and tourists often go to African countries to see them. Due to conservation efforts, the African elephant population in countries like Kenya is growing. In the country’s popular Tsavo National Park, the number of elephants went from around 6,000 to almost 15,000 in 2021.
While this is great news for conservationists, it’s not seen that way by farmers who live in between two parts of the park. The human population has also expanded. This has led to conflicts that often result in elephant deaths. Now an innovative solution — using honeybees — has been found to keep the elephants away from farms.
This solution is part of a long-running project from the Save the Elephants organization. The humming (嗡嗡声) of the African honeybees scares off elephants. Now yellow beehive fences (蜂巢围栏) protect some of the local farm lands, including one owned by Kenyan farmer Charity Mwangome. “We used to hate elephants a lot,” she said. But she believed that the beehive fences could rescue her from continuous crop loss.
A nine-year study published in the October issue of the journal Conservation Science and Practice found that beehive fences scared away elephants 86.3 percent of the time. The study monitored 26 farms that were protected by the beehive fences in two villages near the park. During the peak growing seasons, 3,027 elephants approached the fences and most were stopped. During the drought of 2017, which reduced the number of bees in the hives by 75 percent, elephants were still scared off 76 percent of the time.
Save the Elephants is now building beehive fences in 15 countries in Africa and Asia. But besides stopping elephants, the beehive fences can provide other benefits to communities. Bees provide pollination (授粉) services which can increase crop production and honey from the hives that farmers can sell to add to their income. Mwanajuma Kibula, who has a farm in Kenya that is protected by beehives, harvests honey twice a year from her hives. She makes 450 shillings per jar. This is enough for her to pay for her children’s education.
12. What do the data in paragraph 1 indicate
A. The success of elephant protection. B. The large number of beehive fences.
C. The growth of the Indian population. D. The survival crisis facing elephants.
13. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. Elephants have destroyed crops. B. Elephants are likely to hurt farmers.
C. Charity Mwangome likes elephants. D. Beehive fences should be torn down.
14. Why is Mwanajuma Kibula mentioned
A. To stress the importance of elephants.
B. To show an additional benefit of beehives.
C. To praise farmers in African countries.
D. To recommend new farming methods.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. The Long History of Elephants in Africa

C. An Organization Aiming to Secure Elephants
D. Bees Help Keep Elephants Away From Kenyan Farms

A young girl called Liza scrolled through an online store, her eyes lighting up at the sight of a beautiful dress. It was a designer gown (礼服). She looked over at her mother, who was reading a book in the armchair by the window.
“Mom, can I get this dress for prom (舞会) It’s perfect!” Liza asked. Her mother looked at the price and shook her head. “Liza, that’s expensive. We shouldn’t spend that much on a dress you’ll wear once. Besides, someone has a surprise for you today.”
“A surprise What kind of surprise ” Liza asked. Her mother smiled mysteriously and said, “Just be patient.” After a while, there was a knock on the door. Liza’s grandmother, Pam, entered the house, holding a package wrapped neatly in gift paper.
Liza’s curiosity got the better of her, and she eagerly tore open the package. Inside was a beautiful dress. But Liza’s excitement faded quickly as she realized it wasn’t the designer dress she had dreamed of.
“I’m not wearing this!” she shouted, her disappointment turning into anger. She didn’t consider how hurtful her words might be to her grandmother. Her mother tried to reassure her. “Well, dear, I think you will look beautiful in this dress,” she said.
“No! Are you trying to save money on me! Prom only happens once in a lifetime! I’m not wearing this!” Liza shouted, tears of anger welling up in her eyes.
Finally, her mother decided to give in. Pam quietly accepted Liza’s choice and carefully packed the dress she had made. She didn’t say much, but her disappointment was clear. Liza was too wrapped up in her own feelings to notice the sadness in her grandmother’s eyes.
The evening of the prom finally arrived. Liza danced among her friends, her heart filled with excitement. Suddenly, one of Liza’s friends Mary carelessly poured a glass of red wine on her dress. I have been actively participating in various English activities on campus, such as English corner, speech contests and so on. In addition, I have read many original English novels, through which I have deepened my understanding of English culture.
By becoming a member of the club, I believe I can further improve my English, and at the same time, I am willing to contribute to the development of the club.
I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 Liza headed to the school exit and called her mother, crying uncontrollably. Soon her mother arrived at the school and gave her the package Pam had left for her. “Your grandmother left this for you, just in case,” her mother said gently. Liza’s tears slowed as she opened the package. Inside was the dress Pam had made, the one she had rejected so harshly. She smiled through her tears, feeling a wave of gratitude. “Grandma always thought of every possibility. It seems that she has saved me this time,” she said. Liza took the dress and went to the restroom to get changed.
Returning to the hall in her grandmother’s dress, Liza felt a mix of nervousness and hope. As she stepped inside, the room fell silent for a moment. Everyone turned to look at her, their eyes widening in surprise. “Wow, Liza, where did you get that dress ”Mary exclaimed. “It’s beautiful!” another classmate added. Liza’s heart swelled with pride and joy as boys and girls praised her dress. “My grandmother made it for me,” she said proudly. After the prom, Liza couldn’t wait to see her grandmother to apologize and thank her for everything.
